    the link in message #7442.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
No, I hadn't seen that link. Thanks for pointing me to it.

Obviously that guy knows Photoshop. That replacing color is a common technique. In fact, if you ever look at car brochures, on the page where they show the vehicle in different colors, that's often the method that is used. They use the same image over and over, and just change the colors in Photoshop to show the different body colors. Subaru has done it in their brochures a number of times.

As to the body effects on that WRX—not my taste. Not even close...

So far the Ody is very nice. It seems a bit spartan inside compared to the Windstar, but the handling is terrific for a vehicle its size. In fact I am a bit worried about the long term health of our insurance policy. Beth comes home with way too big a smile on her face, and tales of shaving 5 minutes off of the trip from 'A to B' on twisty back roads!!

Speaking of the Windstar story, I now refer to that $4 off coupon on the State Inspection as my "Get out of Jail Free" card (ie the Monopoly game). As in my past leases, I sold the Windstar privately rather than turn it back in. We should be going to the dealership tomorrow to sign the papers. That allowed me to skate on some over mileage charges and probably having to fix a dent and a cracked mirror housing. I figure that puts me $300-$400 ahead if I filed an insurance claim, or maybe over a $1k if I had taken it all out of pocket. Overall a happy ending.

    All,

I don't know if anyone caught it but in the current (March 2002) Automobile magazine editor emeritus David E. Daivs, Jr. offered a paragraph's worth of praise to the Impreza, WRX and Forester. Aware of copyright issues as I am I will only offer an even briefer excerpt:

"once viewed...Impreza...as an oddly named also-ran...both the first-rate Forester SUV and...WRX are Impreza-based, and I am, well, impressed."

It's not clear from the paragraph whether Davis is aware that the current Forester is based on the last-gen Impreza, nor does he mention the upcoming next-gen Forester. He does mention that the WRX STi is coming.

Is that the issue with an article on the Subaru WRC car and also a little blurb about the Subaru Impreza WRX STi type RA spec C? I have to get that issue. :-)

I don't subscribe, buy it off the newsstand - probably too often for my wife's liking.

On Monday, Susan, Michael and I went down to the Doral Hotel to visit one of our illustrious leaders, Mike Smith, who is down here this week with Allison.
Somehow, they let him into the state of Florida without a valid visa. We spent a couple of hours chatting with them about various and sundry topics, including Subies (you knew tha topic would come around eventually!). Since this is winter down here and the temps had fallen to the mid 70s, Mike and Allison kept moving their lounge chairs to follow the moving sun. This was the first time I had met Allison, and I have to say that Mike is a lucky guy; she is a wonderful person. We took them for a ride in the wagon; it was Mike's first time seeing a blue one. They enjoyed it, and I spent a 1/2 hour wiping up the drool!

Anyway, if you had been wondering where he was, now you know. After the ransom has been paid (a blue B4), I will release him back to the boards.

might have been captured by SOA operatives, and was jailed deep under ground in their dungeon, for requesting a USA-spec Legacy B-4 too often...

Hear is an article from WRC.com regarding some of Tommi Makinen's stranger fans.

really is awesome, and I can't believe she puts up with all the Subie talk. Mike and I kinda spin out of control on that occasionally; only her glazed eyes remind us to shut our traps and talk about something everyone can participate in. :))

Bob: I call it Photochop when the artist modifies an original photo to look like something entirely different, like a "chop job". The WRX-Wing is the best example.

Maybe Serge IS an SoA operative. We want Mike back! If he's in that dungeon where Patti was being "held", at least feed him once in a while?

But have been incommunicado, due to being really busy with a temporary promotion at work, and trying to coax a new computer along at home. This is the home machine, so apparently I'm doing something right... although I still have to tackle the computer not realizing the printer is really here. Subaru's fine... dirty as can be, but fine!

    Cheers!

no wonder the "Cleaning" topic is so empty... what happened to that good old OCD with wheel-waxing, undercarriage-washing and other obsessions?
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
juice - I was kind of paranoid, so I took it
slow. I had visions of those guys scooping out water with a Big Gulp cup from the XT6. :-)

ken - I don't think I took in any water. Not enough to cause problems, anyway. I actually forgot to check my air box after the run.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You're fine if you still have the snorkus. If not, then you're still probably fine.

The intake gets air from behind the right headlight. I doubt water got that high. If it splashed up and was drawn in, it goes into the snorkus, and there is a little drain hole at the bottom of that. I doubt the intake could suck water up that far.

My wife says I definitely need to get help, I have washed the GT every day this week.

Ottawa has been a real sloppy mess this week, and the city do not help things, they were out today pushing the snow from the side of the road out into the middle where the cars can chop it up, you can just imagine what a mess that is.

    Cheers Pat.

After reading all of the chatty posts this week,I decided to ask all of you if you feel as I do. To call the Forester an SUV is a real mislabeling. I think Subaru did this to try and call more attention to their AWD system. I feel that this car is just a station wagon with a raised roof...any comments? Mike
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
I only recently heard an ad where Subaru calls the Forester an SUV. For the past several years, the ads specifically said "Sport Utility Wagon".

The media is the one that insists on calling it an SUV. My wife had a little disagreement recently with a co-worker about the Forester. Her co-worker insisted that it is an SUV.

It's a boxy, more upscale Impreza.

is definitely a wagon, not an SUV, at least mine is. An odd but true story: About 2 months after I bought Rufus, I was giving a friend a ride home. Her said that she really liked my new TRUCK. Within seconds, the low fuel light went on. The bizarre thing is that the tank was more than 1/3 full at the time. It has never recurred. To me it's obvious that Rufus was insulted and was showing me what the fuel consumption would be like if he were a truck.
    :-)

Pat, we really do need to talk. ;~)

All joking aside, washing the car is my way of unwinding, an hour spent cleaning the car and any feelings I had of being uptight are long gone.

    Cheers Pat.
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
The Forester is a tall, boxy wagon with a raised suspension. Its visual cues are more SUV-like than any other current Subaru, but even the new one looks more carlike than its nearest rivals, the RAV4, CR-V, Tribute/Escape, and Santa Fe. Those are the vehicles against which it's most often compared in the US, but the best review of a Forester I've read came from the UK where it squared off against a Volvo XC and Audi allroad quattro.

My wife calls mine a "mini-ute" sometimes but I usually call it a big, square 2.5RS wagon.

Pat- I bet your wife would prefer you spent an hour cleaning the house instead! :-)

I say call it whatever suits you. What defines an SUV anyway? It started out being anything built with an enclosed truck frame and a dual-range 4WD system but that definition would rule out the majority of "SUVs" sold today. IMO the line between wagons, SUVs and mini-vans gets blurrier every day. Regardless of what you call it, the Forester is an excellent vehicle and kudos to Subaru for making it meet the tougher safety and EPA standards for cars.

If washing the car gives you pleasure and helps you unwind it is not a problem, it's THERAPY. Washing the car is a lot cheaper than coming to see someone like me and it probably does a great deal more good. Enjoy.

While some ads might be regional, here in the Greater NY area, Subaru has always marketed the Legacy as a car, the Outback as a Sport Utility Wagon (ie, still a car ???), but the Forester carries the tag line "a better way to build an SUV", with direct comparison to the Escape and even other larger vehicles.

    Steve
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
No doubt that Subaru designed "hints" of SUV-ness in the Forester to ride the wave of SUV popularity. The blistered fenders, body cladding, ground clearance and toothy grille on the 1st generation model was put in place to tap into the growing hybird SUV market. Another way of looking at it is that SOA sugar coated the hard to swallow "wagon" pill for most Americans. ;-)

I've always viewed the Forester as a tall AWD wagon. But it's main competitors, the RAV4 and CR-V are not much different. In fact, I'd like to credit Subaru for paving the way for hybrid vehicles like the X5 and Matrix. :-)

In other parts of the world, the Forester has been marketed truer to it's origins since there's less wagon phobia. Europe and Japan have had high performance Foresters that are clearly tuned for on-road driving.

These are basically the same things. The only difference is that the SUV's have a more rugged look. Most so-called SUV's, especially the small ones, have no more serious off-road capability than the Forester. An Escape, Rav4, CRV, Santa Fe, Tribute, and Forester are all basically FWD/AWD station wagons, and serve the majority of their consumers needs quite well.
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Steve, that's actually the ad I was referring to. That's the first time I've heard a Subaru commercial say "SUV".

Serge, I must say, your World Rally Blue WRX wagon is quite a looker. Sorry 'bout the droolage. Susan and Michael are wonderful; it was good to put faces to names. Michael is a saint for listening to the adults blathering. It's great that he knows so much about roller coasters (ok, and cars).

Please thank Susan and Michael for schlepping down. Next time, I'll have arrangements for terra firma conveyance in order (had a reservation for Jan 16, not Feb 16 - d'oh! .. poor web interface + user bpi == buffoonery).

Bob, Request USA-spec Legacy B-4 too often? Me? ;)

Dennis, Thanks for filling in as Research Director. Nice Pine Barrens photos. bluesubie Feb 15, 2002 7:54am

Colin, That thread has some great colors, thanks. The more creative Photochops (Mad Max, Predator, school bus) had me in stitches. locke2c Feb 18, 2002 7:24pm

Loosh, We do spin out of control, don't we.. oops lucien2 Feb 20, 2002 2:04pm

I think my track reputation precedes me, so he did the driving. Actually, his Rex is still at a tender age and I wouldn't want to blemish it. His family was in the car so he took it easy. Lots of headroom without a moonroof.

I've got my wife's GT today, woohoo! I'll wash it today, in time for Monday/Tuesday's rain (DC).

I told Mike that he can drive it next time...of course, I forgot to tell him about washing and waxing it first...the full OCD treatment...
Kfira got her first oil change today at Accardi Subaru in Pompano Beach. A bit slow, but they only have one Subie mechanic...he loves Subies and works only on them; he thinks they are the best cars around.

As I had said earlier, it was great seeing them here and they are wonderful people...hopefully it will be for a longer period next time...maybe the Dania Beach Hurricane for you and my Michael, followed by go karts...that would be FUN.
