Wow Patti, you were right around the corner, and in Lucien's neighborhood. Next time call us! :-)

Steve: sounds like fun, get a lot of pix.

My dad lived in Suriname for 5 years, a Dutch colony, and I visited about 3 times. I'll tell you, the Dutch definitely know how to party.

Your car must be LHD, what's that like? I caught my dad driving on the wrong (right) side of the road down there once.

Eindhoven reminds me of one of my favorite movies-- A Bridge To Far.

I'm sure you have a very interesting story to tell if you were interrupted while vacationing and then had to travel! I can't think of many things that would occur in my job for that to happen to me. Hmm, on that note I hope all is well.

    Defense or oil? :)

Juice is holding out for the 7 seater so he can have a toadtruck.

    Toadly true.

BTW, Sandy turned 6 this past Sunday. 6 years, 67k miles, and not a penny in out of pocket repairs.

She got a new set of carpeted mats installed a little while before her b-day.

Who else buys presents for their car? Who else even remembers what day they took delivery? For me it's easy, it was 8/8/98.

    Juice-

    Happy birthday to Sandy!
For me it will be 4 years the end of this month. We took delivery on 8/30/00 and 61500 miles later I'm still having fun. While I've had some problems, at least I have met a great group of people here, some even in person.

Patti: Welcome back. Hey, I was at the Inner Harbor a few years ago. That's when I met juice, Lucien and Bob in person.

juice: Happy B-day to Sandy, but only 67K miles young?

    Ken
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
yeah exactly! no wonder you've had no problems, you have low mileage. :)

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Remember, I've had 2 cars for the past 3 years.

I've put about 26k miles on my Miata, so I guess overall that's over 93k miles.

I guess it keeps the fleet young, only problem is they might both need to be replaced at about the same time. Yikes! :-)

We just bought a condo so we're in no shape to buy right now. Maybe in a year or two, though.

Just picked it up today! Around Philly burbs they are going for 400 less than invoice.
Anyway, does anyone know what size the speakers are? Crutchfield and others do not have specs as of yet.

    and congrats.

btw do you mind if mike borrows it for a few hours to do his own personal rollover test?

Great price indeed! Congrats on the new ride. Enjoy.

What color? What tranny? Base XT or Limited version?

    We like details! ;-)

    Cheers!

What is the suggested oil for the 05 OB's XT
I like to use Mobil 1 synthetic, of course the dealer won't acknowledge that (because he won't be doing the change(s))
    any experiences?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Wait until the 1000 mile break-in at least, then try synthetic.

Congrats, by the way, very nice ride!

Invoice of 27893 - 400 - bought for 27493, all in 1 hour during lunch, must be a slow month?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'm sure they are eager to move the new models. People vacation in August so I think it's generally a slow month for the whole industry.

$27,493 is good, below the average new car transaction price, actually, and the car is a lot better then average.

5w30 Mobil1 would be an excellent choice after the first few changes on regular oil.

  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
5W30 M1 year 'round will be fine as long as the car won't see temps above ~95F.

I was in 99F temps in SC last month, and there was a nasty knock when I tried to start my FXT. M1 5W30 is thinner than conventional oil.

I'll be sending my 5W30 in for an analyis soon to see how it has held up.

No, nothing quite that interesting or clandestine. Just typical big company politics. I have been working on a special assignment since March to bring in a new diagnostics tool (several $M), and everyone drags their feet until I take 2 weeks vacation. Then it becomes "can you go right now"? So being the good trooper, I spent the last few days of vacation planning, then flew on Sunday. Already asked for a partial 'do over' on vacation...

Flew into Amsterdam, then drove down to Eindhoven. Last years Ford Focus from Hertz - nothing exciting... But great cars abound! One of the other participants got an A-class Mercedes. Kind of funky, but functional.

Bridge Too Far dealt with Arnhem, which was a bit West of my drive. But you can see the mass destruction all around. I am staying in Eindhoven city center and was expecting to be blown away by the architecture. Unfortunately, there is very little "old world" left here - victim, I can only imagine, of probably some pretty fierce street fighting.

Dennis, what was your coolant temp? I've used both 5w30 and 10w30 M1 and honestly there isn't a great deal of difference between them when you look at the product spec sheet on their website.

in other words, I doubt M1 5w30 was your FXT's problem.

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
actually the 9 bridges began in Eindhoven and concluded with Nijmegen since they never made it into Arnhem. as I said it's one of my favorites. ;) hopefully you'll have some time to look around!

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
I thought the "30" designation indicates that the two flow the same at a given "hot" temperature.

Nijmegen -- I've been there once for business. Man, that was like 10 years ago.

I had to read back to get to them with that lead up!

Yeah - I thought I should get in touch with some of the crew when I was in Baltimore. Unfortunately, I didn't have my laptop (in for a fix) nor my phone book to look anyone up!

But - the sessions I attended at the Univ. of Maryland - Baltimore County, were great so I may be going back soon. The vendor that talks about telephone call center technology holds a lot of sessions there, so....

The car had been sitting all day that day and the day before, and I tried starting it at around 5:00 p.m. It sounded completely dry.

The thickness of 10W30 @40C is 62 cSt, vs 50 on the 5W30.
I think the temp chart in the manual shows 100F or so as being the max temp for 5W30.

    It hasn't happened since.

Long Island, that is. 5 days, just about 1000 miles. I've been getting around with a massively herniated lower back disk for over a month, with surgery scheduled for next Monday, so it was a good test of the cars overall comfort for that kind of mileage. Put in a good lumbar pillow and a bit of extra padding...worked out fine, with a stop to stretch every hour or so. Love that car.

Fun trip. Didn't get to Bob's suggestion of T. Roosevelts house...just didn't have the time, unfortunately. Had a time getting across the G. Washington Bridge and flying over the Cross Bronx. Not sure how people that live there do that every day. My wife was a white-knuckle passenger on the Cross Bronx, while I just took up a somewhat more aggressive driving stance and hoped no one would clip me. Wild driving out there, that's for sure.

Hope everyone had a good week. Lots of messages and mail to catch up on.

Dan: drove the same roads a couple of weeks ago returning from CT. Same experience. I made sure I had a full tank of gas and snacks in the car for the kids, because I didn't want to stop there.

    Dennis,

I still strongly disagree about your conclusion that 5w30 M1 was the cause of your noise.

If it sounded dry, it probably was very low on oil. That's not the 5w30's fault... Did you check the dipstick on level ground before switching to 10w30, or if you changed it yourself did you notice how much fluid went into your drain pan?

PS, the temp chart doesn't account for synthetics. Since you went to Mobil's site to get that flow number, you should've noticed that the metrics for their 10w30 and 5w30 are not that different. (Compare to 0w40 for example.)

in the city there is a consistency to the maddness. i find driving in the city easier then when i meet granny with the purple hair in the burbs. people in the city are predictable in their scramble, granny, geez i have no clue what she is gonna do.
  • damish003damish003 Member Posts: 303
The run across the Cross Bronx reminded me of my years in Rochester at something that was called the Can of Worms. Used to be three highways coming together at the same point, requiring a cross of 4-5 lanes in what FELT like 50 feet. Aggressive driving was truly needed, or drivers would never get where they needed to be. We have almost no traffic problems here in Erie, so it was a real change of pace. I found it strange that there was a toll across the GWB into LI, but not on the way back. Not counting the toll by Throgs Neck. At least I think it was there. And yeah, the drivers this trip were at predictable. I just drove assuming EVERYONE was looking to cut me off. Safer that way, and was pretty accurate. <g>

Yep, you guys just keep reminding me how nice it is to live in a medium sized city with no Expressways. My house sits on a 1/3 of an acre, backs onto forest, on a perfect day I can drive to the city centre in 8 minutes, and on a bad day I get stopped at all 4 traffic lights.
Then again, the value of my house wouldn't buy a garden shed around NY or DC.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Maybe I should sell my shed to raise funds for a new turbo? 10'x12', electrical power, two fixed skylights and 6 windows, 2 that open. Insulation is weak but it does sit on a concrete slab.

How much do you think it's worth? ;-)

It is only a 10 min drive to city centre, on a bluff overlooking the entire city. The description cuts off the part about the 2 bedroom guest house. hasn't sold because most agents feel it's overpriced, and those are only Canadian $$, so multiply by about 75%.

If it sounded dry, it probably was very low on oil.

Nope, when I'm on trips I'm very anal about checking oil. I probably checked it three times during that week.

The 5W30 is thinner than 10W at 40C, as I posted above, so I think that all of the oil drained back into the oil pan. Yes, the chart in the manual doesn't account for synthetics. When the engine is cold, a conventional 5W30 is thicker than a sythetic 5W30.

I'm not 100% sure it was due to the 5W30, but it hasn't happened before and hasn't happened since. I think I'll email M1 and see what they say. I'll also post on BITOG and see what some of the experts say.

"If your oil pump lost prime over two days, it wouldn't matter what weight you had in there."

i used to drive the 12 passenger van to downtown houston during rush hour and the freeways are ALWAYS under construction ... when we'd start home we had one of those 5 lanes across within a short distance things and it was 'easier' when the traffic was stopped than when it was heavy ... i'm sure there were times my passengers just closed their eyes and prayed!

we were talking the other day about how 2 of my daughters learned to drive on houston freeways and the youngest learned to drive here where this is only ONE controlled access highway at all in the city ... i think the older 2 had an advantage in that one ...

Just remember, we all have alloy blocks, they're not going to be happy dipping in cold water when they're at full operating temps.

At least the stock intake is fairly high, above the top of the bumper.

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I'm sorry but I don't think you've learned anything about what caused your noise, Dennis.

100F is not near extreme heat for Mobil1 5w30, even on a turbocharged car. It's especially true if the engine was cold!

Something unusual caused your noise. If it never happens again while you own the vehicle and it runs fine, then this will just be one of those great mysteries you retell every so often to your car buddies over beers. But if it happens again, then I sure wouldn't blame your 10w30.

btw that pump priming thing was WAY out there. the oil never left the pan! you don't hear any odd noises firing an engine after an oil change, why would you hear them after the vehicle sits.

I prefer the answer "unknown" rather than selecting an answer that just doesn't fit.
