I'm still waiting for someone to pop in and say they used recycled biodiesel in theirs or something.

My chipper shredder says not to use anything but 30 weight. Still gets 6 bags to the gallon.

Remember to make sure the body is fully frozen solid before using the shredder/chipper....

OK, this sounds like a perfect time to ask a question that's been on my mind.

A little explanation before the question... I plan to continue having my oil changed at the dealership because they'll do it for free as part of their Rainier Auto Group Autovantage program where if you buy a new car from them they provide free oil changes for life. Anyway, the change interval is 3750 miles with a 500 mile window you've got to get it to them in (or else the coupon is invalid).

So, back to my question... Would it be a total waste of money for me to get some Mobil 1 at Costco and take it in for them to put in at such short change intervals? Or is the stuff they're using just fine (Castrol something or other). I figure that if I'm not paying for oil changes I might as well pony up for the good stuff.

Also, should I go with 5w30 or 10w30? I noticed that when I got the oil changed in the heat of the summer they put 10w30 in but in this last change they used 5w30 (at least that is what was written on my little windshield sticker).

Any and all opinions are welcome and appreciated.

    Thanks!

I never thought of doing this. It flies in the face of the mfgrs recommendations to stay with straight 30, but is worth considering. I am typically still doing leaf cleanup thru Thanksgiving. Lawn equipment in the shed can be down in the 'teens and very difficult to turn over by then.

So as per the thread yesterday, what happens when you put M1 in a 'high mileage' mower? Will it slip by the rings / valve guides too easily??

    Steve
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Now this might be outdated thinking, but I would not change to M1 this early. Popular thinking was to stay dino (ooops.... sorry - had to sneak that in...) till everything 'seated' well (like 10k miles???), then change.

Remember, synthetic is not always better.

You put synthetic gear oil in your Subaru tranny and the issues are well documented. You need a special oil with additives.

    Or conventional gear oil.

I just don't think you should assume it's always better.

    Steve,
I should have said that I will be at 10,000 at the next oil change. I'm at 6800 now on the new GT. Yup, that little road trip out through Yellowstone, Jackson Hole and Denver put a few (like 3600) miles on the new car real quick. ;-)

Ian: Free Castrol isn't a bad deal. For your climate (over 'there') :) the 5-30 vs. the 10-30 wouldn't make a difference. I use 5-30 year round (over 'here') with no trouble, 'cept the old Dodge - it gets 10-40, but it's parked all wnter.

    Cheers!

I didn't know you had been to Fargo. They get some great skies and vistas out in the Great Plains.

Steve - I use M1 5W-30 in my snowblower with no issues so far. It was only a year old and about 20 hours of service when I switched. My lawn mower still uses dino. However, this summer it started knocking when it is under load (high grass). I am worried about the knock and thinking of going to a 40 weight from the recommended 30 weight. It takes a beating (as do I). A collegue of mine uses Castrol Syntec in everything he has, and he has many toys.

    Ian,

If it's not any hassle for you to go to the dealer every 3750 miles, then having fresh conventional oil changed every time will probably as good as having a synthetic in there for an extended period.

Just keep in mind that if you decided to go that route, then stick with conventional oil. You probably should not switch to synthetic sometime in the future just in case it does too good a job cleaning stuff of your seals.

If it were me, I'd go M1 5W30 since 3750 miles creep up fairly quick with my 60 mile/day commute. If you go this route, you could have the dealer change the oil every other time since the recommended interval is 7500 miles. And if you happen to have time, you could just have the dealer change the oil filter for the in-between intervals.

Thanks for the input Ken and Paul. I guess I check out how much Mobil 1 is before making a decision. If it's not too expensive I'll likely go that route.

    $2.49 a quart.

  • goneskiiangoneskiian Member Posts: 381
Where are you getting it at that price?

I just checked Costco in my area and it's 23.99/6 qrts or 3.99/qrt.

    goneskiian,

On my '98 OBW 5 spd, I changed to Amsoil at 5,000 miles. I sometimes think that was too early as it uses about a quart every 3,000 miles in "normal" driving. If I run at "high" speeds on the freeway it uses a bit more oil. Plus Amsoil gear oil is in the tranny - it still shifts OK.

There was a chat with some techs from SoA and they said it was fine to switch at the first oil change (3,750 miles).

At this rate that will come for me sometime in late October or early November. Still M1 5W30 or 10W30, or Amsoil?

You guys just kill me! 13 years ago I bought an El Cheapo Murray push mower and it's had "maybe" two oil changes with the cheapest oil I could find yet it's still going strong, runs smooth and invariably starts on the first pull.

    -Frank
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Maybe that's all the oil he had in stock. ;-)

    -juice
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
same here Frank-- crappy yardman mower, crappy straight 30, changed at intervals approaching never, working fine. "wouldn't start in cold weather with 30 weight" LOL

    ~Colin
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
    Ed, M1 5W30 IMO.
Amsoil is good stuff, but more pricey. I wouldn't run 5W30 in the summer if you drive to the Southeast. With it's low pour point, M1 10W30 could be used year 'round. But you need all the help you can get with fuel economy judging from those numbers you told me the other day

I'm sending in some M1 5W30 for analysis this weekend.

oh yeah, what kind of MPG are we talking about?

city-only 2.5L turbos won't be pretty especially if you drive spiritedly.

    ~Colin
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
I seem to recall mid to upper teens city, low twenties highway. He did mention something about driving it like he stole it. :-)

    I get 19-21 city, 24-26 all highway.
Ed, go synthetic all around. ATF, front and rear diff. too.

  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
    Since purchase: 20.9, 20.1, 19.5, 18.6, 17.3, 17.8, 17.6, 17.7, average 18.675 ~ 18.7 mpg.

Disappointing but I imagine I've had a lot to do with it. Car isn't even broken in - just shy of 2K miles - but I could stand to lose some weight especially in my right foot.

I'm sure Colin will set me straight if needed :-p

Remember how I was all pumped about my new WRX and the fact that Daddy got his very capable toy which still could carry my entire family of 3 boys, DW and dog for short hauls? Would only consider changing her if the Holy Grail that is the Legacy STi wagon (or maybe the F-STi) came here.
I'm not yet allowed to say anything officially, but let's just say I'll have to start praying for a Tribeca STi if I want a single do all sporty vehicle for the family ....nudge-nudge/;-)/;-)

Sounds to me like Nicholas has a new addition coming to the family and it ain't a vehicle! ;-)

There's something that really hasn't been fathomed yet - an STi version of the 7 seater. Maybe they should do this from the get-go to help justify the price. Just debut the 'STi' version and then offer an economy model shortly thereafter.

    Early congrats Nicholas!

    Ed,

    What's your highway/city mix?

    Ken
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
My commute is 21 miles each way, each day. 7 of those miles are on four-lane, divided US 1; 9 are on the Pennsylvania Turnpike; and 5 are on city surface streets.

Commute time and average spped varies wildly. My best time has been 30 minutes; my worst, 1 hour 40 minutes. Yesterday was one of the worst at 1 hour, 20 minutes; an accident on the PA Turnpike had me basically rolling at idle speed for the entire 9 mile stretch plus another 2 miles of US 1 that backed up at the Turnpike entrance. There is a point on US 1 where, even if I find out that the Turnpike is backed up, it is even more time consuming - not to mention farther and all on surface streets - to exit and use all city and residential surface streets.

Not the best time in my life to have chosen a performance-oriented car but as our friend Pat often writes, you are a long time dead.

    '04 XT MPG: 21, 21, 21, 23, 23, 21, 22, 21, 23

That's from my mileage log so far. A few highway trips in there, but most are short city trips. My miles per day average is about 23.

Amen, Amen, Amen, or to put it another way you will be a long looking at the inside of a coffin lid.

days. No - it has nothing to do with driving my new OB Limited test vehicle. White this time!

So - Dave - did you hear from Metric yet? Please ask Dave Brown to call me if he wants my spin. I think you'd be a great resource for them!! I'll be reading and catching up here. May be a few minutes late for the chat. Heading to pick up my son from his last class of the day. I can't wait 'til he finds a car!

    Patti-
Haven't heard from Metric yet... being a Director/Manager the last 15 years do tend to go against me.

Netherlands event looked incredible. But what also blows me away, was that must have been 100% of the cars in the country! My recent week in the low countries (Netherlands and Belgium) netted a grand total of 3 subi sightings - and they were all older generation cars....

I was supposed to head back overseas this Sunday, but I asked one of my techs to go in my place. Just too much going on, and I feel spread too thin. Would have liked another week there, but maybe some other time in the future.

Nicholas! Don't they teach you guys in medical school about how those parts work, and how to avoid the additional patter of little feet??? ;-)

  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
A drive to Manhattan and back netted nearly 25 mpg. Manic point-and-squirt urban commando work= 17 or 18, down into performance car territory.
  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
Jesse? I'd like to get an address for him if someone can get me the information. That young man deserves and SOA care package - and the folks that set that up? If you can help, I'd really appreciate it. It really made me smile to remember what a great group of folks Subaru owners are - - I'm so lucky to be associated with all of you.

    Thanks!

Another subie coming to my stable shortly....

Yup that's right, I'll have 4 Subies and the Trooper!

Picking up an '88 XT6 5MT AWD, with 2 extra transes for the large sum of $0

It will be our winter project car, maybe set it up to do the $2005 challenge.

More details as I get em.
