Low mileage Steve's? I guess at 47+ I no longer qualify as low mileage. Mid level use, and some hard miles at that....

Our Pathfinder was sold at over 10 years of age with 103k kms on the clock.
My Civic went at 9 1/2 years old with 89k.
Three vehicles: newest and lowest mileage is my 2000 Legacy at 97k.

1999 GT LTD 30th - 111k, just commuting to work.
Put the rest of the miles on the 03 Outback on weekends and trips.
Oh yeah, I put 40 miles on my mint condition 1983 Mustang GT driving the boy to soccer games.
Cheers Pat.
Maybe I'll call it Denali in honor of its Alaskan heritage.

Driving much more now as we do the sports/activities shuttle. Today we have soccer, gymnastics and Taekwon Do. Monday we start hockey, Tues is Kumon (reading system - the boys are in French immersion so we wanted structured english reading too), Wed hockey and dance/theatre(one of our boys really wants to be an actor- for now he is settling for class clown, but that's another story), Thurs TKD and gymnastics again. We're hoping to get into a Friday swim class. Sundays they get off, so Mummy and Daddy take their turn. I usually ride and Sandra does master's swim club.

As it is cooling for you folk, our kids have been testing the pool here in Melbourne. It's still distinctly chilly but I have always claimed Tamsin is part seal, or polar bear. Watching her dive and swim the 14m (about 45ft) of the pool underwater, I wonder where she keeps the fat layers. A work colleague just called in with his daughter and she had to test the pool as well.
I am back into mulling over replacing the Outback. I really fancy a new Outback but we have hit the stage of our chldren's life where more seats are desirable. Judy does not drive so this is a one car household so the car has to be multi purpose. None of this Juice luxury of a sports car for fun! Although that might be nice now the weather is improving some of the time.
I tather fancy the Toyota Kluger (Highlander to you) Hybrid which is to be relaeased soon but not sure it will make it to Australia.
The one barrier to buying a new car is the hassle of dealing with car salesmen. They come fractionally above real estate salesmen in my list of dodgy occupations. There is much to recommend Internet haggling. You don't have to see them face to face!
Cheers

I was out with my wife shopping for a small car for her and we bought her a 2005 Impreza RS Wagon. But the surprise was that I also traded in my 01 Highlander for a monotone Champagne color 2005 Outback XT w. 5MT.
Great car! It will put driving enjoyment back in my life.

Now we have one Acura and one Subaru, so I feel really normal now, it's kind of boring....

Although the new dad/business travel in old job/new job issues didn't keep me from buying an '05 Forester XT in August, they have kept me from tinkering with my '63 Studebaker. Early in July I went to take it out to run some weekend errands and I couldn't keep the darned thing running. It'd start up fine but die as soon as I took my foot off the accelerator.
July, August, most of September passed and no time to find the problem. Other Stude owners suggested, among other things, replacing the throttle return spring, fuel filter, or carburetor (remember those?), or draining, pulling and boiling out the gas tank.
Yesterday I finally got some time to start chasing the problem. First thing I do is remove the air cleaner to take a look at the carb and throttle return spring - both look fine. As I turn to set the air cleaner down I hear a rattle inside it. Puzzled, I remove the lid and the air filter inside and find...
...about a half cup of thistle seed.
I dump it out, check the carb for any sign of seeds; none - the air filter did its job. :-P I replace the filter and air cleaner, start the car, and get off the go pedal. Engine doesn't die. I take it for a half-hour drive; no problems.
Here's what must have happened, as far as I can figure: We have a thistle feeder but didn't put it up this year as it was pretty hard to keep clean. There was some leftover thistle seed not in the feeder, but in a bag on a shelf in the garage. Some birds (most likely goldfinches) must have taken the seeds, flown underneath the Stude, up into its engine bay and into the air cleaner intake to feed. There were no birds or traces of birds in the air cleaner when I dumped out the seeds.
As I wrote, stranger than fiction.

Which, I'd like to point out, also had cookie foo last week. Between Nabisco and Edmunds, freaking out, I ran a full virus scan and Adaware 2x to make sure it wasn't me!

I have an 1983 Mustang GT which spends most of it's life in storage. For the past 3 years I have delt with mice which have taken up residence in the heating system.
I have moved the car to three different places in the yard. I have tried moth balls. Last year, I packed the cold air inlets with half a roll of aluminum foil. I was rewarded with 3 gallons of leaves, acorns, and most of the insulation from under the hood packed into the heating system.
The upside is that I can now take out the heater core, fan, and plenums, clean and re-assemble in under 4 hours. It used to take me 2 days. Fortunately, they have never made it to the inside of the car.
BTW, any suggestions to keep the mice out would be greatly appreciated. Rob M.
Steve
The droppings will be little black dots. If you found any, it was mice.
You really gotta drive that thing more often.
2 Subies at the same time? Why stop there? Good things come in 3s!
Back from the beach. 3rd weekend in a row of road trips. Indian Summer had us beach bound once again.
And yet again, my wife got better mileage than I did. Same load, same trip, she got nearly 29mpg, while the best I managed was 26. She goes about the speed limit, I'm only about 5-10 faster, but I guess the boxy Forester is more efficient at 50 vs. 60.

I'd rather not have to put the car in a bag for the winter, so I think it'll be the mothballs/dryer sheets/child-friendly mouse trap route for me.

BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!
Very clever if that was intentional. :-)

OK, so I need an auto transmission much to my dismay. So why the NA Legacy wagon? Well when I lost the first WRX the wagon, I really needed one to haul the dog and go on vacation in. When Susan got a second dog again it became obvious that we needed a wagon again bad. So she was looking to trade in even thogh she owed much more on her Solara and I really did not want to dump the WRX. Then this happens and luckilly with the GTP program my WRX is worth $17,900 and I'll get $500 in Subaru bucks for accessories. The nearest dealer with a car that I wanted was Lou Fusz Subaru in St. Louis. So I put a deposit on one. It is silver with the electro dimming mirror, security upgrade and rear cargo tray. All the extras I wanted and nothing more. I'm getting $1500 off list and the deal is OK with me. I would love to have a GT but the price is $5000 more and the difference of about $8000 I am looking at with this car is not too bad. Everything I had heard about the new interior is true. Very nice and I am a lover of sunroofs and this one is the ultimate. I did not want extra ride height of the Outback, I'd prefer the handling of my WRX which for the most part I will retain with this car. I just can't get around the 19/25 on premium with the GT. I am glad I am moving up to 22/30 on regular. Gas prices are sure to get worse. Guess after a while I will get used to shifting with something other than an H pattern. I'm sure the car is not a slug but I could sure feel the difference after having driven the WRX. Plus the saleman was on board. We did get out onto the intersate and although not the fastest thing on wheels it is quiet and smooth. I can't get back to St. Louis till for several days but I think I am doing the right thing and it will be a nice car.

To be honest my right knee is feeling kind of strained. I usually do the trip myself but I actually asked the wife to drive back for about 2 hours or so to give my knees a break (she promptly trounced my mileage numbers).
Keep in mind I've been driving 6-8 hours every weekend for a month or so, plus my regular commute. But still. I know how you feel!
Sportshift surely eases the transition some, giving you back some of the control.
My wife and I discussed this last night, basically our next "trip car" will be an automatic. Our personal/commuter cars can remain manuals, but the one that takes the kids on those long trips will shift itself!

Juice: Make some more long term room on the fence. It looks like I may have finally talked my wife into leaving her job. It has gotten to be very bad there-working late every night and weekends, along with getting screamed at every day to boot! As such, I told her it's not worth going nuts over, so get out.
That means I'll probably have to wait a while before being able to go for the new OB. It's just a car, while her well being is more important. At least I'll go for the test drive this week for the $25 gift card. It may just come in handy:-).
Mark
I hope she finds a better job soon, can't be any worse actually...

He *LOVES* it. He's only had it for a couple of days and he told me 5 people already came up and asked him about it.
Better yet, his son is crazy about it. He plays Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed and told his dad the GT is more fun than the cars in that game! He shouts out "Yipee Ka-Yay" and "Ride 'em Cowboy" from the back seat.
He's having a little trouble staying under 4000 rpm for the break-in. ;-)

The white-collar industry is a slave industry nowadays - you're paid for 8 and you're worked for 12. Soon, bosses will be cracking the whips literally.
If her company has an upcoming layoff, she should volunteer, otherwise bail.
-Dave
Dave-
She has volunteered. The problem is she is one of the more knowledgable people in her area, so she has been told she is the last one to be let go. There will be layoffs eventually since they are relocating her division to Charlotte, NC. We just don't know when. I told her it's better for her to just get out, now she has to convince herself (the hardest part).
Sounds abusive. She should threaten to sue unless they offer her some sort of package. She's being forced out psychologically.
-juice
Has she tried putting her foot down,
"Lay me off now and I'll consider staying on as a consultant or I'll resign."
Something along that line.
If they need her that bad till the relocation, they'll compromise.
-Dave
p/s Human Resource? Ha! If there's any humanity in them.
I gave up on manual shifting, but it was because my left knee got hurt..... Either you cross your legs or lie on your stomach facing backwards?? (gives new meaning to the term 'heal and toe') ;-)
