Several months ago I had the symptoms described by Steve ... this time it was more like what my daughter described shortly before she had to have HER gall bladder removed (and also more like the way my friend described her pains) ... mine included a dull aching pain in the area Steve described, but I felt it more across my back as a pain below the shoulder blades. It almost felt as if I'd been doing something to pull those muscles ... but it really felt like a pain from mid-body through to the back ... luckily it hasn't returned ... although you can be sure I'm watching what's going into my mouth!

I have an assortment of tummy, back, and all-body pains on a regular basis that I attributed to my weekend antics (either sports or home projects) and getting old. I'm probably about to blow my guts!

Gallstones are most common in overweight Caucasian women in their 40s, but of course this is just a generalization. Lots of people develop gallstones that don't fit into this category. No judgment intended, just a medical fact and I'm sure it doesn't apply to anyone here. ;-) Treatment is laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder- takes about an hour, leaves 4-5 small scars and recovery is quite fast these days. ;-)

Craig, I've learned as I get older and become more of a 'weekend warrior' that anti-inflammatories have become my friend. ;-). Just remember to always take them with food and stop if your stomach hurts or you start bleeding out orifices. Also not recommended if you have bad kidneys. ;-)

    Hi Kate,

    Good to see you back.

    I just passed 100k so I'd guess 132k?

Mid 40's is correct, but you missed on my sex and weight!! Recovery would have been much faster if I had not been somewhat toxic first. I lost about 15 lbs from not eating for the week prior.

Ew...hope everyone suffering with health issues soon gets some relief.

Re: tonight's chat - Mod-Bob is celebrating his yearly milestone, but will be waiting till the chat is over to lift his b-day brew. :-)

Great reason for a virtual party! (btw, I'll probably be drinking for him during the chat) Rob M.

Wow! Birthdays abounding at my house too... one yesterday, and another today.
Neither one of them old enough to brew-hoist as yet, though... so I guess I'll do it for them!

    Cheers! (clink!)

    112K - Colin (locke2c)
    115K - Steve (fibber2)
    132K - Jim (jfl)
    110K - Juice (ateixeira)

    any more entries?

    I'll offer a WAG - 123K. My second guess would be 142, but I don't know why :)

    Cheers!

137! (Thanks for the good wishes!) - We've missed you here! If you join the chat tonight - Wow - we might have 3 women there (if Brenda makes it that is).

I'll be on the chat for a little while anyway. I might be late or have to leave early, but I'll be there.

Sorry I haven't been posting much. I'm learning my new job. The woman that I'm replacing worked her last day today. I've had to cram with the learning as she's done a great job for over 20 years. She left some tough shoes to fill

    Tom,

...that anti-inflammatories have become my friend. ;-).

Any thoughts as to the advantages/disadvantages of different anti-inflammatories?

Jim - not yet an A-I abuser.
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Jim, anything OTC (over the counter) are all going to be about the same. They're all basically in the same category with the same benefits and risks (ulcers and kidney failure).

There is a new(er) class of anti-inflammatories that are prescription only, called Cox-2 inhibitors. You've probably heard of one that's just been voluntarily pulled off the market, Vioxx, because there is an increased incidence of strokes and heart attacks. The 2 other drugs available in this category are Bextra and Celebrex, which you also may have heard of. We don't know yet if the same issues as Vioxx apply to Bextra and Celebrex, but it's possible.

Basically, these drugs have the same pain killing effects as Ibuprofen (motrin) and the like with less incidence of ulcers and kidney failure, and no effect on your platelets (which stop you from bleeding when you cut yourself- a good thing to have). But I don't recommend them anymore to people with potential heart problems or are at risk for strokes. Better to be safe than very sorry. They probably are safe, but we don't really know yet.

Kind of a long answer to a short question. Sorry if I put anyone to sleep (I have that tendency when I lecture) ;-)

and no effect on your platelets (which stop you from bleeding when you cut yourself- a good thing to have).

A diet that contains a good dose of vitamin K should compensate if you're on medication that may reduce the platelets.
IIRC my biology, vitamin K is a clotting agent.

Sorry I missed the chat, we're having major broadband problems, it's so frustrating. I ended up staying up until 11pm and it's still so slow, I think my dial-up is faster!

    *sigh*

I have to declare a tie between Colin (locke2c - 112K) and Steve (fibber2 115K). At the time of posting, I had 113.5K on the odometer. So Colin was off by -1500 and Steve was off by +1500.

Now, let's guess how many miles are on my last set of tires... (just kidding!)
  • dcm61dcm61 Member Posts: 1,567
Shoot, I should have submitted my guess because that was my exact guess. :-(

Maybe I should play the lottery today.

Jeez Kate, that's some miles!!!! I have the exact same year/model and have 53k on it :) I think I like my odometer reading better :p

I finally won one of these contests! And my prize is???

Given a choice, I would like to have dinner with the attractive and talented Kate on my next trip out to Silicon Valley.

Vitamin K is a co-factor used to produce clotting factors in the liver. Unfortunately, it won't help your platelets at all as they are a different part of our blood clotting system and are not Vit K dependent. ;-)

If you're on blood thinners (warfarin/coumadin) than eating foods rich in Vit K will make it harder to thin your blood, which is not good.

Maybe this is too much information! Sorry!

    Have a good weekend everyone!

I think a new discussion forum is in order:

Subaru Crew - Ask Dr. Tom

    LOL! Rob M.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Sure, Dave. lol

For winning Steve earns the Title of Vice President for Statistical Data Planning.

We can't afford to promote Colin because we need him in Technical. ;-)

We should bring back Ross and we could have an "Subaru Crew - Meet the Doctors" thread.

For all you guys that missed the chat last night Patti dropped a major bombshell. With the new job she has been told she cannot participate in the Subaru forums.

I suggest we get the letter writing campaign going, it worked last time. I can't think what Subaru could be thinking, Patti IMHO is a far better deal for them than all the advertising they can buy.

Hell, I would venture to say she is a better advocate for the crew than Lance Armstrong and God only knows what his endorsement is costing them.

      Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I missed the chat, but I wonder if she can remain on unofficially, at least.

I'll try to get more info on what's going on. Her participation has been voluntary all along, maybe they can make it officially unofficial?

    Pat

I've been in touch with juice, and I've e-mailed Patti to get further clarification on how to proceed. I haven't heard back from her yet. I don't think we should do anything until Patti gives us some indication as to what, if anything can be done. The last thing we want to do is to put her new job at risk, so I'd like to first get some feedback from her first. In the meantime, let's keep our finger crossed.

I'm going to sell my Subaru. Or at least think about it. ;-) She's one of the best perks of owning a Subie!

Welcome back, Kate! I was wondering what you were up to. You, Jim and I should meet up again.

Not having Patti around is a big loss. While I don't understand why it would conflict with her new job, I don't see why she couldn't participate just as an individual. Of course, that would mean that she couldn't be on offical business, but I think we all value her company regardless.

    Bob

I wouldn't want to cause her any problems either, Like Ken just said i don't see any reason why she could not participate here as a regular member.

I just fail to see the reason behind this, she never went over the line she never ever dissed the company in any way. On the contrary she has always gone out of her way to stress what a great company it was to work for.

      Cheers Pat.

I don't know about anyone else, but typically people have to leave behind their former duties when they get promoted. I would not be surprised if Patti needs to drop Edmunds as a matter of practical consideration. I am sure she will be taking on a whole bunch of new work that will keep her busy. If she's like me, she will have a hard time saying no to her old connections / friends / duties, so let's not pressure her too much -- it may put her in a difficult position.

I am sure she could participate on her own time, outside of business hours, and that's all we should expect for now! If, like the rest of us slackers, she finds time to post during the day that would be good too!

    Craig
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
I too realize Patti's new duties are more important and congratulate her on the well deserved promotion. I do hope she can participate on her own time every once in a while, as she is indeed part of the family here in the Subaru Crew.

The real issue SOA should tackle is getting someone to replace her presence here in the same compacity. I know Patti mentioned she was trying to look into that. As long as someone had the same commitment to helping fellow TH members as Patti did, I'd be happy with a new representative from SOA.

Perhaps that is the letter issue we should pursue - getting and insuring a suitable replacement for Patti here on TH.

Won a crew contest, but lost Patti, all in the same week....

We also have Dr. Volks (sorry, but I don't think I have his name spelled correctly) as well.

    No Patti?!

Ross...where are you? I think we need counseling!

    Jim
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I know for a fact that she wants to continue here, but her new position at SOA has thrown in some bumps in the road, for sure. She's working in a different department than before, with a different supervisor, and the (internal) rules have changed somewhat, which has resulted in this situation.

I've been in touch with juice, but just briefly, as he's been swamped at work. I'm sure this week we will try to figure out a game plan of some sort.

To further complicate the issue (for me) is that Deb (my wife) is having surgery this Thursday, so I may (?) be somewhat out of the loop for a while. I just don't know yet.

    Bob
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Hope your wife's surgery is nothing serious, our best wishs to her.

Whatever is decided count on me to at least add my 2 cents.

      Cheers Pat.

She has an orange-sized fibroid growth on one of her ovaries that needs to be removed. Not sure if any thing else needs to be removed, as the doctors really won't know until they get inside.

Hope things go well for your wife. I'm willing to write another letter to SOA, but hope that doesn't become necessary. Martin
