Me, I'll just drive Bob's after 1000 miles, see if it really does bounce off the rev limiter like Hutch's 2.0l turbo does. :D

Subaru is taking its first steps to rework its dealer image. Their initial flagship dealership groundbreaking took place in Plano, TX. This'll be the model for future "signature" dealerships around the country.

"the new Subaru of Plano facility will present a contemporary image that is very representative of the progressive, advanced technology of Subaru vehicles. The exterior finishes include metallic surfaces, natural slate, and a sleek, all-glass view into the showroom. The curved front wall will provide both architectural interest and express progress. A simple portico will welcome customers into the facility.
The interior architecture will provide high, open spaces with extensive sight lines between areas. A mixture of both private and open spaces will be offered for all customer functions, including sales, service, and waiting. The service technology and vehicle care is proudly displayed from windows within the waiting area.
The materials to be used throughout the interior of the facility include natural slate, cherry hardwood flooring, architectural glazing, granite surfaces, wood veneer furnishings, and leather upholstery, to express richness, authenticity and quality. The interior will also be illuminated with soft, consistent lighting."

Windows to actually show off the service area to waiting customers - I think that's a super idea. It helps communicate a sense of honesty (nothing to hide) and develop trust. Nice to see the techs that are working on your vehicle.

I've never owned a Subaru before and I just purchased a new 2006 LL. Bean Outback. I am being offered an Extended Service Contract (backed by Subaru, Added Security Gold Plus Coverage) for 5 years/100,000 miles. I most likely will not trade this car and will most likely keep it for its useful life. Can anyone share their experiences and/or thoughts about whether the purchase of this extended warranty would be worth the cost (about $1,700.)

    Thank you for your insights.
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
    First, Congratulations on your purchase!

End of Oct I picked up a 06 Bean wagon, after trading in my 2000 OBW. At the time I decided to go for the extended warranty (6yr/100K/$0 deductible) because I had one on my previous OB and it did come in handy. Plus, my wife and I are slightly paranoid about having the extra protection ;) . I think it ran around $1800 or so for the 6yr/100K mile/$0 deductible.

If you are unsure, you do have until 3yr/36K to buy it so you can always wait and see.

BTW -what color did you get? Wagon or Sedan? And, of course, congratulations once again!

Unless you're getting a screaming deal on the Extended Warranty, my general advice is to wait until the end of the 3-year factory warranty period. By buying now, you're essentially giving Subaru a free loan for three years.

  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
I agree 100% with Ken -- no need to buy it now. Keep that money in your savings account where it will actually do something for you. You can always buy a warranty online at any time within the 3/36 period and probably get a better deal too. Me, I never buy warranties because statistically, they do not favor the consumer, but if I did want one I would wait and buy it right before the basic 3/36 warranty expires.

got some new michelin winter ice tires for my fxt yesterday. quickly found out that they do NOT do anything for ya when you hit black ice. however i did make it successfully thru the black ice area just before one of those monster 4x4 suburbans lost it and smacked a lowly bmw 3. the people in the monster gas hog were fine but the bmw3 convertible people ended up stiking a monster pine tree about 7 feet up before flipping over to the ground and took a ½ hour to get out with firedudes help.

convertibles really suck when flipping ya know.
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Most regular cars suck in a confrontation with a full size SUV of any kind.

Around here used to be when you saw a Crown Vic. or any other full size car it usually was a senior citizen driving it, now it is not unusal to see seniors driving SUVs.
I think the rational is, that as their driving skills erode they are less likely to get hurt in collision if they are driving some behemoth.

    Cheers Pat.

Shop around, gentlemen. Let your modem do the walking... Bet you could shave at least $500 off that price by purchasing it from an out of area dealer.

Hint - somewhere around Bridgeport, Ct, IIRC.... I paid under $800 for the Gold 6yr/80k/$0 two years ago. While I accept that prices have gone up some, and you are looking at the 100k vs mine at 80k, you are a full $1000 above me.

Sounds nice, but I wonder who will pay for those upgrades, i.e. if Subaru will subsidize dealerships.

risub: I got a Subaru Gold 7/100 warranty because our last car (Mazda 626) became a money pit in years 5-7. So we hedged our bets, and meanwhile we enjoy roadside assistance, too.

We'll probably sell with a few K miles on the warranty remaining to give the buyer peice of mind, so we hope it'll boost resale values as well.

If you can get a deal anything like fibber's, wow...AAA for 7 years used to cost us $497, by itself!

Let's do our annual run-down of each Crew member's wish list. You can answer Kevin's question in the Blog, but for this thread let's stick to our usual rules - $100,000 to spend, must be available for sale right now, no trades.

What do you want in your driveway?

I got it: '06 WRX Limited wagon. :)

But you know me. No one vehicle is enough for me. So besides the WRX, I would like:

    • A Tribeca 7-passenger w/Navi & DVD
    • A Nissan Titan crew cab 4x4. (no Ridgeline just yet. I want to see how it evolves first)

What do you want in your driveway?

That's easy - freshly laid cobblestones.

Something with wheels you insist? The M5 (Miata) looks like fun.

The Miata (did I mention I'm awful with those alpha-numeric names?) won't fit in my garage as it is, unless I dump the van or Outback. I wouldn't mind a Smart, and it'd probably cost $100k to certify for US use.

    Steve, Host
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
$19698 for a basic MX-5 for my toy
$34161 for a Tribeca Ltd NAV/DVD as family car
$46141 is left for a GS300 AWD w/NAV plus taxes (wife)

Spec B was close but she wants an auto, and a GT Ltd is too cheap! LOL :D

Would be for a 4 seat convertible, so I could take the kids. I'd want a hardtop, but none are here yet (Eos, 3, G6, and Volvo all coming), so right now I'd have to go with a Saab 9-3 Aero.

    9-3 Convertible, $40k (mine)
    Tribeca, loaded, $34k (family)
Legacy GT Ltd auto, $26k (wife)

I'd be happy with either option.

  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
Since I already have my 06 OB, I would spend the $100K on:

-05 GMC Envoy XUV fully loaded out at $40075 (sticker). I always liked the idea of the open back (that's why I like the Baja).

    And

-06 Cadillac CTS-V at $52655 sticker (I inherited my Dads love of Caddies)

that will leave me roughly $7500 for gas.

    Mark
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587

using street prices and optioned up with the stuff I'd like (or DW would like in case of the B9)...

    '06 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Limited V8 = $36k
    '06 Subaru Legacy GT sedan 5EAT = $28.5k
    '06 Subaru Tribeca 7 passenger w/ NAV and DVD = $35k

    -Brian
  • hammerheadhammerhead Member Posts: 907
'06 OB or GT wagon, 5spd, 30K give or take
'06 Dodge MegaCab (can you say 'hemi'?), 40K if I'm lucky

Since my garage is currently full of stuff like bikes, snowblower, tools, doghouse, fill in the blanks) with no change in sight, the balance goes for a garage add-on (higher door, too!) or a pole building out back!
DW gets to keep her Suburban.

Can I get partial credit for selling my current OB & the old PowerWagon, in case of construction cost overruns? :)

    Cheers!

Would that much money entice my grown children to spend a bit of time with their mother?

hmm ... maybe I'm a bit ticked that I have to work this week and don't start vacation until Saturday, yet this is the first Xmas I have family from the south to spend it with me here and vacations don't match with my grandsons vacations ... so they are here and I'm still at work ...

so far .. it's like the stupid movies families .... not matching expectations ... MOSTLY due to the one still in college who THINKS she knows it all ...

sounds terrible doesn't it? ... and i really do love having them here ... but working this week really does .. well .. you know the word ...

Yo Juice, you missed a hardtop... the SC430 has a rear seat (and you're in luck since only kids will fit). Of course at $65k you'll only barely have enough left to get the Tribeca ;-)

  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Let's see... using Edmunds' TMV prices and optioned nicely:

    06 Subaru Legacy GT Spec B = $32,4k
    06 Mercedes SLK350 = $52,4k

Wow that already puts me at close to $85k so it's a good thing I already have the FXT for my "utility" vehicle. I think I'll plan a nice long driving vacation with the remaining $$$ :-)

  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
06 Subaru Legacy GT Spec B = $32,4k (Is this a limited edition of 500 cars? If so, only 498 left!)
    05 or 06 MINI Cooper S
    06 Outback (non-turbo)

    Option 2
    Porsche Cayman S
    Legacy Spec B

Well, seeing that I did get my LGT LTD this year, I can cross that off my list. I did find a couple 'toys'.

2006 Roush Mustang Stage 2 Convertible at $44k
    2006 Land Rover LR3 HSE at $57k

    Total of $101k. Rob M.

Interesting to see a lot of trucks/pickups on people's lists, especially given gas prices.

Frank: true, but I have an issue with paying that much for one single ride, since I like a 3 car fleet. I guess there's also the SLK and SL, but those are 2 seaters.

Good thing my wife wants an automatic, otherwise they may have sold out on Spec Bs just from our list!

Mini Cooper - hmmm, they make that in a convertible too. That might replace the Solara. I'd drive both to determine that. The engine is made in Brazil so I'd be helping my country mates. And probably getting an unreliable car. ;)

Not surprising to me. Everyone here who has listed a truck have also listed more fuel-friendly vehicles, and I'm sure the trucks would not be their first choice as a daily driver.

Also, if you've ever owned a truck, it's hard to get it out of your system, as they are just so "useful." When I used to own one, I can't remember all the times some neighbor wanted to borrow it.

I'd opt for a trailer, in fact I might get the Tribeca with the towing kit and add a trailer like yours to my list, though the wife may complaint about 4 vehicles taking up the driveway. :surprise:

    Bob-

The XUV was discontinued, but dealers still have some 05's available. Matter of fact, go to the GM website, and the XUV lists at $40K+, but their red tag price is $32K+.

That's another reason it's on the Xmas list- get it before it's gone.

  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
Silly trailer question - you need to get seperate plates/registration/insurance for that, correct? I'm toying with the idea of getting one.

The bike I bought for my wife takes up the whole inside of the car and the racks they make for it go for around $500 - $600. For that price I figured a trailer would be more useful all around.
(I'd post a photo of it, but nothing seems to work for submitting it :( ).

    Plates and even insurance.

Well, having had both a pickup and a trailer, there are advantages and disadvantages to both. Trailers are a real hassle if you just need to run to Home Depot to get something quick. Plus they are a HUGE hassle parking one.

Having been there and done that: I would want both! :)

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587

Not for me. I want both: truck & trailer.

    Bob
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
Not for this bike (trike). It's 60 lbs, 78 in wheelbase. I'm not lifting that up and down on top of the roof every time. Too big a pain. Besides which, with a trailer I can put her bike and mine in the trailer, then go take it along with our luggage on vacation.

    Legacy GT LTD.

    Mini Cooper S.

And don't laugh, (Reconditioned to new) Morris Minor traveller. I have had a soft spot for one of these for many years.

    Cheers Pat.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
Now we're talking! Cayman S for me too. :D Carbon brakes but few other options would still push it north of $70k MSRP.

Then I need a truck. I think I could get a fullsize 4WD for $30k or less, just need a standard cab V8.

Late to the party here, but my $100k would be a mid '50s MB 300SL gullwing. Most beautiful car ever. Of course, my wife'd be jealous (rightly so). And that $100k would be more wisely spent on a garage itself. Who'd park a gullwing on the street or in a carport!?
