Yeah, but good luck opening the gullwing doors in a normal garage. :shades:

Good point. I'd have to build a special gullwing garage where the walls lift up and out. :)
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Well, geez, if you're going to set the limit at something reasonable like $100K. :D

    I'll take a Z06 and a Miata track edition.

    But tomorrow I might want a 911 and a Miata. ;)

    Merry Christmas everyone!

Get a garage this year, the gullwing next year. Santa always comes back. ;-)

Well, just went to my little brother's and sister's college graduation. She's a year older but took 5 years to finish an engineering degree (biological resources). My brother got a BS in government and politics. Pretty cool, I felt pretty proud of them, both were Terps like I was.

Old-timers here may recall my brother hopped in for a couple of posts, using a screen name of Teddy-something, way back when, probably before he started high school. He's also the one that got the '03 Legacy SE sedan (sis has an '02 Forester X).

So I poppped in for the end of the chat, but it looks like it ended just when I joined, oh well. Next week, I guess.

    Juice,

Please convey my congratulations to both. Nice to hear god things happening. And tell your sister 5 years is not bad for a degree - I did the 13 year plan for a BA in Business Management (3yrs semi-full time, the rest at night).

    Happy Holidays to all!

to all ... may they include snow for a merry subie holiday!

No snow in the forecast here. It's 55 degrees north of Boston and both Subies got their Christmas bath this morning.

Happy Holidays to all! Rob M.

My brother got a BS in government and politics

i can not think of a better degree for government and politics
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Yeah, he's full of it.

    Knowledge, of course. ;)

Gave all 3 cars fresh oil and filters for Christmas. Sadly, no Tribeca keys in my stocking, but that's OK, the kids had a blast and we have a lot to be thankful for.

This is awesome - this guy ran hot water to his garage so he could bathe his Tribeca with warm water.

I granted him lifetime membership in the OCD Club. :D

Actually about a year ago over over on nabisco some guy actually made a full carwash in his 2 car garage tiled walls and the whole bit so he could wash his cars in the winter. Now that is true OCD>

    Cheers Pat.

    G'day

there would be an upside to it. You could bath the dog without buckets of hot water or sending it to the grooming parlour.

    Cheers

My Sentiments entirely, but on the other hand If I had the money and the garage I could see me doing something like that.

I would like to wish the whole crew a Peaceful, prosperous and happy new year. And may you be half an hour in Heaven before the divil knows yer dead.

    Cheers Pat. :)

I think if I had the money to tile my garage and put a car wash in, I'd sooner use the money to pay someone to Zaino it every few weeks.

Chat link is on the left; last chance this year to talk live with your fellow Subbieites.

Sat in a Spec B while at the dealership for service today. Looks even better in person. The color of the red leather seemed more muted than in the photos I'd seen... warm and inviting, a little spicy. :) Looked great with silver.

Also, it looks like Subaru's offering a new option on some models (Legacy & Outback sedans, Tribeca w/out DVD, and...?). $59 gets you rear reading lights. :) That's a detail Subaru's been missing for a long time. Great if you have kids or carry rear-seat passengers on trips. I'll order it on my next Subie. Hopefully they'll continue to add more convenience items as options.
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
    Amen to that, Pat.

A Happy and Healthy New Year to one and all!

    Mark
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, the leather is a lot darker than the press photos make it look. Too much flash on the cameras?

I got new matching booster seats for my kids. The tan color matches Sandy's interior, plus it has slide-out trays and built-in lights on each side, pretty nifty.

Happy New Year to all. My resolution is to get my finances back in order and start saving up for my next Subie! Maybe not for 2006, but we'll see.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year! It's been storming here in Northern California. Since before Xmas, we've been hit with rain storm after rain storm.

Last night, we were hit with one huge Pacific storm. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph on the bridges and 7-8" of rain in some areas. The rivers in the Napa area are expected to flood today with some areas exceeding flood levels by 10'.

Hope things are a little drier for the rest of you!

So I need everyone's help here.
Should I keep my 98 Legacy GT with 120K (it will need timing belt- I did it at 60K , not 90 last time; water pump and is in need of some new camseals for a tiny oil leak), otherwise it drives great. All brakes recently done in last year. Last oil analysis shows engine is still doing great. Daughter gets to driving age in a year, this could be a good "beater" for her to beat up! But it doesn't have all the modern safety stuff like side airbags etc. Or should I get a 4cyl 06 and then let her use it in a year or two?? She actually has her eye on the WRX but no way on earth is she getting something with more than 10hp/year of her age! That also means no 3.0 or turbos, though I would really like to get VDC which means I may have to break that rule! Heck, my first car had 55hp! So what do ya all think???
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
My advice is to keep it and run it into the ground especially since a new driver is gonna be using it.

It's not going to be worth much on a trade and you know how the car has been maintained. The one thing to keep in mind is the headgasket issue. But then again my advice would be to have a maintainance account in the event a gasket goes.

Even to replace both headgaskets is less than one years depreciation on a new car.

    My 2 cents.

    Cheers Pat.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy and prosperous (and dry Ken!) New Year! May 2006 be a better year for all!

I've been down in SoCal visiting the folks and there's something very unnatural about it being 80 and sunny in the middle of December! I'm actually glad to be back in Seattle where it's raining! :D

I would say it depends on how much "disposable" income you have. And how good of a driver you think your daughter is going to be. If she's responsible then it may be reasonable to let her drive a new '06. I'd certainly feel better about my kids having all the extra airbags and safety features (which hopefully will never be used!) as there is that peace of mind knowing it's there. But it is the more expensive option. Otherwise as Pat said, I'm sure the '98 would still make a great car for her to "beat" into the ground.

I definitely agree with the hp limit- they should have a car with 'adequate' power, but nothing to get them into trouble or be tempted to streetrace.

    Good luck!

    Tough call on this one.

Pat is right about the headgaskets. This seems to be the weakest point on these models.

I traded my 99 Legacy GT with 125k last May. It was very clean, and mechanically sound. Other than normal maintenance, all I did was a set of tires and brakes all around.

My reason to update to an 05 Legacy was the allure of the newer model. I like my new car, and at times still miss my old one.

I would keep yours and shoot for 200k. Good Luck! Rob M.

Hey, when I was in SoCal I saw a red STi with a white racing stripe and 'eSX' on the side. It sounded like it was modded and took off pretty fast down PCH. Does anyone know if this is from a tuner down there? I thought I saw a similiar car in one of the Drive issues (Or maybe it was Subiesport?).

Anyway, I was stopped at a light going the opposite direction, otherwise I would have chased him down for a little bit and asked.

the subie is a good car .. and will last with a little maintenance ...

my third daughter (last year in college) is still driving the 93 oldsmobile cutlass ciera with almost 200,000 miles on it .. even with a rebuilt transmission put on it about 2 1/2 years ago it's still a bargain compared to buying something newer .. it's worth nothing to anyone but us .. and it was well maintained while *I* drove it the first 7 years .. and it's not nearly as well built as the subie ...

my advice is to make sure she has good brakes ... keep the 'beater' for her .. and when she's able and willing to make a commitment to help pay for something newer .. THEN get something newer ....

    my 2 cents

all the best for the new year to everyone

thanks for the advice on the 98 for the daughter, I'm leaning to a new one for the safety aspects. the ultimate authority will decide the issue as she will need a new minivan soon and it'll be tough getting a new Legacy and new minivan plus the kitchen redo she wants!!!!

Having observed my sister get her license and go through, well, let's call it a "learning curve", I think I'd start with a beater for a teen.

If you go new, just go the extra mile and take her to an advanced driving course, for many reasons.

I had the Townhall bookmarked in my favoutites, since the so called upgrade when I try to get in this way, I get a message saying post could not be completed due to login delay.

Then I have to go through 4 steps to get in, Anyone else have this problem?

    Cheers Pat.

Same problem here, when clicking on "Forums" on the home page, for about a week now. It always works on the second try, though.

Pat, yeah, there are issues with Edmunds software. They did a big upgrade early in December, and there are bugs to be worked out. This has been complicated by the holidays and vacations. Hopefully it will be resolved shortly.

A Happy and Healthy New Year to the Crew!

2 weeks gone and there are 1,200,369,000 message to read!
Michael and I had a great time in NJ and NY, where every other car we saw was a Subie!; I had some really useful interviews with administrators in Union, West Orange, Basking Ridge and Green Brook school systems, thanks to Michael's friend's father, a dentist in Cranford. They gave me lots of encouragement and possibilities for September.
I've sent away my paperwork to NJ Dept of Education for my certificate of eligibility.
Meanwhile, I passed my Reading K-12 exam here in Florida and am taking reading endorsement classes online. I hope to have both my Social Studies and Reading certifications when I go back up to Jersey.
    We went to NY for some sight-seeing, Observation deck of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, Museum of Modern Art, Soho for dinner at Tennessee Mountain and desert at Bruno's Bakery, Hard rock Cafe in Times Square to look at their collection, and hit every guitar store on 48th Street...Manny's, Rudy's, Sam Ash, as well as 2 different Guitar Centers in NJ. Michael got to try out all of his dream guitars, including an American Telecaster, Gibson Jimmy Page Les Paul, Rickenbacker 12-string, Gibson ES 356 and 335, as well as a vintage Gibson TV Yellow Double Cut(around $12,000). His favorites were the Jimmy Page and the vintage ES 356, the size of a Les Paul , but semi-hollow body. Michael and his buddy Dan both play guitar and spent the second week of vacation jamming. No complaints there!;
Anyway, I have some good vibes about the trip and look forward to coming back North.

Thanks Steve. I looked up their website. They built 21 of these in 2005. 365hp at the crank, custom paint and interior, aftermarket Nav, each numbered (with the number on the front bumper). They're sold through a bunch of dealers in SoCal (and elsewhere). But nothing terribly unique or special about them (other than the appearance).

Was one actually in the movie?

I've just made edmunds a bookmark and go through a few steps each time. It can be inconsistent as to whether I get in easily or not though.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful new year!

Yeah I tried a new bookmark and got the same problem, and like you I don't have any tracked items.

It seems like everytime Edmunds upgrades, the bugs have all got worked out, when bang here we go again, I really wish that when things are working fine they would just leave it alone.

    Cheers Pat.

I'm bookmarked to "Subaru Crew - Forums" and have had no problems or changes required to connect.

So Brenda, what are all the things I need to do to avoid being jinxed???
