The reason I did not list exactly what is in the car is because that I am not a detailed person in this regard. I was thinking that EX-L RES is a factory loaded model, everything should be the same as long as it carry that model name. Also, this car for me is a more a weekender/kids-playroom and ss long as is it drives well and kids like it, I am happy.
By the way, I do have this sense that the price of Odyssey is coming down. Please see my other recent messages
Also, I noticed the Carsdirect price change and I have already had some of my internet offers "lowered". This may be another reason why the dealer is still willing to honor such a great price again.

Wow.. Anyone looking to buy an Odyssey on the West Coast should jump on this.
By the way, I have no doubt that your buying experience will be pleasant because, as I see it, the Internet sales people are really nice and professional. They can even prepare the car before you arrive to save your time.
Could these drop in prices have anything to do with the recent (meaning in the last few days) release of the Hyundai Entourage? I did a feature comparison between the Entourage and the Odyssey, and the former seems to have some more additional standard items. What stands out is the warranty: 100k/10 year powertrain, 60k/5 bumper to bumper on the Hyundai! Local dealer just got some last week and I plan to test drive it.
Again, thanks to everyone for replying to my original post. I truly feel more empowered in my decision making.
I definitely recommend making an informed decision and driving the Hyundai. FYI I drove the 06 Kia Sedona (essentially the same van as Hyundai) and here were my areas of concern:
- It was a nice van, but did not handle quite as well as the Honda. The transmission seemed to be "hunting" on several occasions for the right gear. The van did have nice pickup and acceleration and was comparable to the Honda. The van definitely had some roll on turns.
- I did not like the interior as much as the Honda. I found the fit and finish to be a grade below Honda and Toyota. It was better than Dodge/Chrysler, but still not quite as refined as Honda/Toyota.
- I was very worried about buying a brand new model year van. I usually like to wait at least a year for the manufacturer to work out problems and issues, and also checkout problem boards and CR research.
- Kia/Hyundai usually offer large cash incentives 6-12 months after a new model year release. Look at the 06 Sonata it has not been out 1 year yet and they are offering $2500 rebates. This kills resale. Especially if you pay invoice or higher on the van. If you have to buy a van now, keep this in mind if you think you may sell it within five years or so.
- Comparing a comparably equipped Kia Sedona (EX/w luxury package) and Hyundai Entourage (Limited), the Odyssey EX-L is actually slightly cheaper if you get it under invoice. Granted in 6-12 months when Kia/Hyundai sell their vans for $3K+ under invoice, this will not be the case, but it is now.
- The Kia's (and I am pretty sure Hyundai's) middle row seats do not slide sideways like the Honda/Toyota/DCX vans.
- From a co-workers experience (also checkout the message boards) many Kia/Hyundai owners have gotten the "runaround" with warranty claims. Kinda like many health insurance companies, they tend to deny, deny, deny and you sometimes have to fight to get warranty work covered. Also, double check what the warranty covers and whether or not you are in a "severe-use" state. "Severe-use" means you need much more frequent servicing, and Kia/Hyundai service and parts is more expensive than Honda/Toyota based on my research.
- One more thing, the 2005 Kia Sedona (previous generation) was listed as one of Consumer Reports worst bet vehicles (the 05 Odyssey is listed as a best bet):
CR Best and Worst Bets
All of the above factors swayed me away from Kia. Especially reliability, and resale. On a side note, the 06 Sedona/Entourage are considered the safest minivan per the IIHS.
Even the So. Calif market can't be THAT ruined!
Glad I escaped!
The Riverside Metro/Honda did not have a record of your transaction. And won't honor the price without it. I don't feel like they are jerking me around. The sales person tried to contact me a number of times/ways just so I didn't waste my time going out there tonight.
I emailed you requesting some more details to help them track it down.
So if I calculate OTD,
27,450 + 2264.625(Sales tax in LA) + 250( documentation fee)=29964.63.
However, I want to buy this car at 28,500 OTD. Someone bought EX-L at this prices.
Actually, my friend will buy EX-L at the same time.
Is it possible to buy EX-L 28,500 OTD?
I am not a good negotiator. This time is the first time of buying car in USA. Should I give this price to dealer first? What should I be aware when I buy the car?
My friend will cosign and his credit is over 750.
I will down pay 4000. What is best APR?
Thanks for helping in advance.
After discovering the mistake, I contacted Penske Honda and referred to you and they were happy to give me the same offer. I paid 27,563.58 (before tax and docs) or $30,137.04 OTD for a Silver 2006 Odyssey EX-L w/DVD (no Nav). This is $2,132 below invoice (including destination).
For all those interested: the van has 7 miles on it, the DVD player was factory installed, the cargo net was standard, I had no trade in, I paid cash, the MSRP on the sticker was $32,945, there were no dealer add-ons.
The sales person I dealt with was extremely nice, accommodating with no BS. I would recommend them highly. I'm sure that Riverside would have matched the offer if I could have identified a sale at that price.
sgolvan, thanks again for your tip and for taking the time to share your experience on this forum.
The difference between OTD and price paid before tax and docs is 9.336%. It appears that you made a VERY GOOD deal.
Your price before doc and taxes is about $ 700 LOWER than best offer that I could get on a 2006 Ody EX (cloth) in September.
Is Penske Honda close to a goal of selling THE MOST Odysseys in the United States? How much incentive would corporate Honda give to the # 1 dealer?
Great experience and everything was as advertised when I arrived at the dealership. I got quotes from several other ohio dealerships and their's was the best. Rt.23 Honda in New Jersey actually beat them but Mike Pruitt matched and I decided the drive was shorter to Akron.
All dealers were forthcoming with information when you asked. Be sure to ask them to itemize their destination (if not included in quote) and other fees.
Very happy with the vehicle - really does handle and drive smooth!

I got the EX-L for $28,560 OTD, but it was only because the salesman played the old "I quoted you the EX price by mistake" game. I was not buying that line and promised to make life miserable for them if they did not honor the quote. After a big hullabaloo they finally gave me what I wanted, though my original OTD quote was for $28,380 OTD.
BTW, I asked for a complete breakdown of 'applicable fees' and sent him back a spreadsheet with everything calced out to get the OTD cost.
Did anyone else get an EX-L for that price?
Pretty sure my taxes were 3.17% in VA and about $70-80 for tags (I also had to pay a $289 dealer processing fee). Are your tax/tags that much higher, or were there some hidden dealer fees in there somewhere? Otherwise your OTD price on the EX-L (w RES) is almost the same as the OTD price of an EX-L (w RES) that I was quoted here.
"2. Dealer Incentive: The CarsDirect.com price for the vehicle contains a special manufacturer-to-dealer incentive. Customers must take delivery of this vehicle out of the dealer's inventory and prior to the expiration date to be eligible for this price. This price may not be available on special factory orders or used in conjunction with special manufacturer financing or leasing programs. Prices subject to change at anytime based upon program rules. Please ask your Vehicle Specialist for details."
I called up a few dealers around here and told them about the 2200 below invoice deals people are getting. All of them immediately agreed to check into it and get back to me. I am waiting for their responses. Keeping my fingers crossed...
I saw some quite sacastic messages about our deals but all I can say is that in the capitalist market, a consumer has the advantage to buy any product/service at the lowest price with best quality. If any has any doubt, he should take some foundation classes in business. I am not saying that Odyssey should be $27650 or $30000. The market dynamics right now indicate that below $28000 is fair one (at least in Sol Cal). Do they lose money for doing business that way? Of course not (at least not overall). I can probably demostrate this better by ask those people a similar question: does Microsft lose money by give Internet Browser out for free? You kidding?
If you are not a good negotiator, use your email to request price quote. I don't think you are worse than I am (or rather, I don't really care that much). In email, you don't play on their turf, rather, you are in control. If the price is not acceptable to you, you don't have to buy.
There were no other hidden costs... My sales tax rate is 8.25% ($2278), Docs $45, Ca tire fee $8, DMV $242.
Penske Honda in Ontario does NOT seem like they are on a path to bankruptcy. I would guess that they benefit by a combination of volume discounts, repeat business, service and word of mouth.
I'm not sure if they are the highest volume seller, but they claim to "the only dealer in California to be honored by Honda with the Presidents Award 8 times." I also noticed that their "monthly target" was about 400 cars. Does anyone know if this is significant?
Originally I was going to use carbargains service ($190), but I was gathering internet quotes just to be sure I was getting a good deal. Carbargain's expected turn around was 7 days. Then, 10 days later, I didn't want to wait any longer, so I requested a refund (which they are GREAT about). I have been a fan of carbargains, but I truly don't think they would have "found" this opportunity.
I always ask for a price quote that has a COMPLETE breakdown of everything (price of the vehicle, tax, tag+title, and all dealer add-ons and fees).
I agree about email, but again, be careful. Dealers do not legally have to honor an email quote and they sometimes use email as a way to lure you into the dealer.
No offense isell
Nice to see your active participation in this board.
Sorry if I come across as being paranoid, I really am not. Trust is something that I give our partially.. I like to believe the good in a deal, but I approach things very methodically and I tend to look over every paper I sign carefully. In the case of the Odyssey I bought last Saturday (Hendrick Honda), it was my best new car buying experience to date. Just like you, the email quote was spot on, and there were no gimmicks or hassles. I never let a car salesman pressure me into making spot decisions, and do not give into high pressure sales tactics.
Thanks,

If a store sells approximately for $1100 less than the invoice after deducting holdback (as documented by two recent posters), then it would appear the incentive has to be on the order of $1500 to $2000.
Isn't competition wonderful?
Those used-car-sales type of persons, or those we some times call 'low classes' (sorry for political incorrectness) have bigger problems in their life. They most probably were not brought up in a loving and caring environment, with very low education and low self-esteem. They end up selling car for quick money (they think) and subject themselves to dealership's presure to sell, sell, sell, no matter what. Whenever I looked at those people with cheap funny looking suit, I feel sorry for them. Personally, I think commision system, if not used properly, bring the worst out of people, like car sales. Frankly speaking, I don't think those people can be successfull even in car sales business.
Again, trust is one thing and be prepared is another. I trust people does not mean I write a blank check to anyone I meet. Always have a second option ready, i mean anything in life in general. For instance, if you have your own finance already ready before you go to the dealer, the worst case is that you use your own financing. You may use dealer's if they give you a better rate. I bet the dealer won't even dare to play the tricks with you unless they don't want the commission from their financial institution. You always have the final say 'no' to any item they offer. You can even say that with a smile... Like I said, it's a market economy. They know what their bottom line is (we don't have to guess) and we know what we want to pay. One way or the other, someone has to make adjustment to make a deal. Our objective is not driving dealer out off business, we are not IRS. Frankly speaking, the business model of car dealership is way outdated. They are in the desparate need for some serious consulting (although they may not see it).

I understand it is not allowed to post sale person's name and email....But why it is also do not allow to ask the information outside the forum by personal email? Sgolvan provided great information for the forum. I do not think it is hurt the forum by asking through personal email. If the people here are not allowed to share and help each other, then what is the purpose of the forum?
I agree completely with atuzai and adow1. It is one thing to control the content in the forum, but it is another to restrict free information exchange outside of the forum. This is particularly true when the information being exchanged does not "deprive the community of valuable information" because this information is not allowed to be posted into the forum in the first place (see Rules of the Road: 6. Posts about dealers).
Allowing that exchange tends to attract shills, promoting their dealerships... and ultimately renders these types of forums useless... as they become one big advertising blog..
We also discourage "e-mail me" posts, though they are permitted. However, if you are expressly asking for or offering the same information that is prohibited in the forums, then the effect is the same, and those posts will be removed.
To answer the specific question.. The information isn't being requested outside the forum, it is being requested here... or offered here.. "Please e-mail it to me" defeats the purpose of the rule.
Last... but not least... if you have any other questions about how the forums are moderated, or the rules... please drop me an e-mail (or any other host). We like to keep these types of discussions out of the forums, as well.. but, I thought this might be instructive for the group.
Thanks for your cooperation..

Incentive money belongs to the DEALER, not the CUSTOMER. Now, the dealer can use those dollars in order to make an otherwise impossible deal.
I try VERY hard to bite my tongue in some of these Prices Paid forums but I do find some of these prices...well..."over enthusastic".
My feeling is that if you get near, at, or below invoice on a Honda Odyssey, you did just fine. There will always be someone who got a better deal than you (whether it is "enthusiastic" or not) and you cannot control that. As isellhondas eluded to, dealers have the ability to make a deal happen if they want to, but all deals are not the same. Alot of it has to do with what region of the country you live in and how a vehicle is selling. Why would a dealer lose money on a deal if there are three people willing to pay more money? Likewise, if a van of a less popular color has been sitting on a dealer lot for 90 days he may be willing to make a deal to move that particular van off the lot..
The Ocean Mist Metallic Odysseys NEVER sit on a lot in this area. That is why the best deal I was offered last September was about MSRP less $ 500 and the dealership required that I place a $ 500 NON-refundable deposit to put my name on the waiting list for an Ocean Mist Metallic 2006 Odyssey EX (cloth).
Ironically, my nephew got a NEW white 2005 Odyssey EX (cloth) from the same dealership on November 30, 2004 for more than $ 3000 BELOW MSRP. The light yellow/tan interior just did not appeal to people in this area, November 2004 was a VERY slow month for that Honda dealership, and the White Ody EX (cloth) had sat on the lot for some time.

My opinion is that OTD is never a good measure for price quote. That leaves room for price manipulation, such as fees. Since you can't get away from tax and registration so you should take those government mandated items out of your equition. You never ask a grocery story or department store for out of door price, do you? Otherwise you should do all your shopping in Daleware (just kidding). There is no sales tax there.
I submit that OTD is all that matters. Who cares how they manipulate the fees, taxes, etc. I care what I am paying out of my pocket. IF it works out better for them to shift the numbers around, it gives me a better chance of saving some money.
If you are not a good negotiator, use your email to request price quote. I don't think you are worse than I am (or rather, I don't really care that much). In email, you don't play on their turf, rather, you are in control. If the price is not acceptable to you, you don't have to buy.
Don't be surprised if they supposedly made a mistake when you come in to pick up the van.
It's funny, I was all set to buy the Slate Green EX-L Odyssey, and when the sales person drove me down the lot to look at the color (I test drove a Sage Brush), I spotted the Ocean mist and loved it (so did my wife). The saleswoman told me that this was the only Ocean mist EX-L at the dealership, and that they sometimes have people waiting on lists to get this color. Well, we bought it immediately, and the nice thing about Hendrick is that the color of the van was never factored into the price. We basically negotiated the price of the EX-L and I could pick out any color I wanted (I do admit, I loved the olive trimmed leather in the Sage Brush we drove).
I actually really like the look of the white Odyssey with the tan interior. White cars really hide the dirt well. After trading in my black Altima, I decided to stay away from dark colors for now (way too much work, although I love the look of a clean black vehicle)...
They are not selling as fast, Sage Brush and Slate Green on the other hand are selling pretty fast.
I was all set with the Slate Green and found out there's no Ivory Int to go with that
I ended up with the Sage Brush with Ivory. I need to find time to keep that sucker clean, a lot of real estate to wax
