Holdback is not a rebate but should be right around the number you posted. If all is correct then the true cost would be right. Holdback is designed to be just that "an amount held back for expenses of the dealership" (operating costs) That is why it is segregated from the invoice.

So you can now figure either what you are willing to offer as profit or how low dealers are willing to go.

just completed our purchase of an EX-L R&N. Price of 30,688.00 plus tax, title/license, doc fee (45.00) and CA tire fee (8.something cents). Our OTD cost was 33,544.xx with a tax rate of 8.25 percent.
A fantastic buying experience at Marin Honda thanks to Brent and Craig. I highly recommend them!

Rather than pit one dealer against another for another 100 dollar savings, I found the deal I liked and went forward. There were a couple of dealers begging for my business if they could knock 100.00 off Marin's offer. I chose to give my business to the store that didn't play games and were up front about everything.

Just got back quite discouraged from our local Honda dealer today. Our friends in SoCal picked up the same car in the color of their choice (and ours) for 32,600 OTD. We went today in VA and was told that those were rare and in fact, they have a huge mark up in the EXL.

Anyways, I discovered the forum today and I'm blown away by these unbelievable prices. I would be happy to give them an OK profit just to make my experience a good one. Any recs for dealers within 100mi of Northern VA and what a decent price should be. From what I'm reading, this trim w/NAV and RES are somewhat harder to come by. Thanks all!
  • mssocalmssocal Member Posts: 3
I am also looking for an EX-L NAV/RES in SoCal. 32,600 OTD sounds like a fantastic deal!!! The best quote I have received so far is 30,583 before doc fee and TTL. Could you share the dealership your friend picked the car from? Thanks!

what's the tax rate in the DC Metro Area?

The fantastic prices paid (claimed) by some posters have to be put in question when the numbers don't add up. In other words, dealers cannot give cars away at a loss. Unless there is some "secret" holdback or factory to dealer incentive, there is no way people can be getting 2k under invoice.

Perhaps we're not getting the full story. If someone has a trade in then that needs to be disclosed. Obviously the dealer will be making money on the trade in so the difference can probably be found there.
  • mevandemevande Member Posts: 190
They can price it OTD at 2k below invoice w/ all the info from the posts. There are incentives (1000.00) at present, dealer holdback and promotions from Honda for dealers for volume (end of the month is a great time to buy!) To the sales person who intimidated the person asking to have their # and name posted, sounds like a blowhard.
  • justlooking920justlooking920 Member Posts: 6
The tax rate in VA where I went is 3% I believe. I've read that there are dealer holdbacks, end of the month incentives, etc on the board but do not know if this is nationwide or regional. Anyways, that's why I want to know what a good price in THIS areas is and if anyone has any pointers on specific dealerships to try.

I'm not expecting 2000 under invoice but the dealer I went to made the EXL w/DVD and RES sound so rare that I should expect to pay 2000 above MSRP. After reading this board, I don't believe I'll be calling him back.
  • jmpgjmpg Member Posts: 6
Is the $1000 incentive a manu/dealer incentive, and when is it valid? I am planning to buy an EX, standard equipment during the next 7-10 days in the Phila. Metro area. Anyone have recent prices on that car in this area? Would an offer of $1500 under invoice OTD be considered a serious offer by internet sales managers? (Sounds like a reasonable price based on the info I've read in these posts). Thanks!!
  • suetampasuetampa Member Posts: 1
I want to thank all of the users here for discussions on pricing and how to get internet quotes and getting the bids right. Yesterday morning with all your info in front of me, sent out to request quotes for EXL w/dvd in Tampa FL market. Had a quote below invoice on first call back (while doing my laundry). I got 2 dealers competing, Autoway in Clearwater and Kuhn in Tampa. Ended up at $28,500 including dest. Was going to take a $100 higher bid and drive to Autoway but timing wasn't right (salesman there was great). Ended up at Kuhn with another nice guy (no schtick) and out the door in an hour. Did a 48 month 12000mi lease for $22 month less than quote walking into another dealer 2 days earlier, and without all the attitude. I loved getting a competitive price up front, not having the hassles of the floor salesman and walking away feeling I got the best price in my market. I think (at least at these two dealerships) they hire a different type of person for the internet sales. This is the first time I've negotiated my own deal and am extremely grateful for all the info everyone on this board provided. Thanks to all.

This is just an observation. I live in SoCal and am in DC area vacationing for past month, and checked out prices in No VA Honda dealers. I found prices of Ody/Pilots are consistently lower than prices in SoCal, about $ 500-1000 on LX's, and about $1500-2000 on EX-L's, including freight. And with taxes added there is no comparison (3% vs. 8%+). I had previously thought SoCal is the most price competitive region in the country, but I thought wrong. But interestingly, Toyota prices are better in SoCal (about $1000-3000 better on just about all models). It just seems SoCal Honda dealers have some collusion going on to keep prices high, despite of holdbacks, month end incentives, or whatever non-published incensives there are. While SoCal Toyota dealers are more aggressive with their discounts. Perhaps they had too because they have to compete against mega dealers like Longo (biggest Toyota dealer in the country I think).

I am also looking to buy EX-L with Nav and RES. I have received the quote of 30,624 including $550 as destination fees. I am searching in Naperville/Aurora area.

    Is this the right price??

    best regards
  • raggedy1raggedy1 Member Posts: 29
Mevande, you say the dealer incentive is 1,000. I'm under the impression that the factory to dealer incentive is 500.00. Is there something we don't know????

the tax rate is the huge difference in the deals that are being posted. If I paid 5% LESS than my OTD price, I could subtract $1,534.40 from my total for a new OTD price of $32,010.00

So that sounds much better, doesn't it? But it's not reality since we have an 8.25% tax rate up here in NorCal.
  • raggedy1raggedy1 Member Posts: 29
Justlooking, did your friends in Socal have a trade in??? I find it hard to believe they got an OTD price $944.00 less than what I got up here in NorCal.
with the factory holdback factored in, that price would have the dealer giving the car away at a loss...

Unless of course there was a trade in and they fudged the numbers that way...
  • justlooking920justlooking920 Member Posts: 6
Where in NoVa did you look? The prices I've been quoted are close to MSRP.
  • stressdoc1stressdoc1 Member Posts: 5
The deal is on a EX-L 1,000 below invoice and no destination charge (550), so in effect 1550 below invoice. $26,708. We will have to pay taxes on it, and transfer of plates, but otherwise Albert has a no-fee policy. I was hoping to get 1200 under invoice based on what other folks on this list were reporting, so getting 1500 under (including not paying for destination), was an unexpectedly good offer. The initial over the web offer was invoice, but we went in and talked and test drove an EX and EX-L, and that was the price they offered, no-hassle. Just wonderful. My recommendation is to email and then go in and talk to the Web sales rep -- she is great, no nonsense, honest, to the point. Our kids are friends with the sales manager's kids, but I would guess that business is business, and this was far and away the best deal in Missouri. Reagan Honda responded with: "I don't see how dealers can make any money selling cars that low." Albert Honda's service has always been excellent, so it's a no-brainer for us.

Your "observation" is directly contra to that of just about everyone who has posted on any of the Odyssey or Sienna threads here. Many have reported fantastic Sienna prices in the DC area and not so great Odyssey prices.

I guess I was hoping for somewhat closer than NC or SC, something more in the DC metro area. Frankly, I would pay $500 more to save myself the trip, especially since you could end of getting screwed and not getting the quoted price by the time you're actually there. Just my 2 cents...
  • raggedy1raggedy1 Member Posts: 29
wow, what's up with SC and NC documentation fees?!?!

extras such as wheels locks and mudguards can be high margin items for dealers (not as bad as "undercoating" of course). ;-)

Let m eknow where you got this rate as it is better than what I got.
    My quote was 31,600.
Your's is a lot better than mine. I saw elsewhere in this thread that someone paid 29,800 for this in Crystal Lake.

Anyone have any information on recent prices paid in Colorado (or neighboring states) for an EX?

I'm very surprised people are posting prices paid under invoice, I haven't gotten a single internet quote in the Denver area for less than 26K + TTL. What gives?
  • jscottg64jscottg64 Member Posts: 13
What did your payment end up being? I'm starting to look for a 4yr/60K lease on an EX-L w/ DVD (to replace our 2003 EX-L DVD) and just curious what ballpark the leases are in these days.
  • raggedy1raggedy1 Member Posts: 29
One would figure that a dealer would be willing to deal under invoice at this point in the year.

The factory is offering dealers a 500 dollar incentive on the Odysseys, so many dealers are willing to pass this on. Be persistent. It helps to have several dealers in your area.

When I started my internet search, the first quote I received was at invoice and a couple of offers over invoice. Then I started letting dealers know about the 500 dollar incentive and their offers began to drop.

I'm happy with the 1k under invoice I received. It still allows for a dealer profit, although it does figure out to about 1% of their 30k investment which doesn't sound too good from a dealer perspective. They may be taking very small profits at this time of year but I guess it balances out over the entire year where, for example, they get much better margins on the new model year cars sold late in the year (early in the model year of course).

Good luck with everyone's search for an Odyssey.

Alright, I am the new guy here. How do you find out the invoice price? I keep reading posts of $1500 or better below invoice, but how do you know that? I am looking at an EX-L w/o NAV and DVD in the Rock Mountain Area (WY, UT, etc.). Any help would be appreciated.
  • raggedy1raggedy1 Member Posts: 29
Edmunds.com or KBB.com will both show invoice pricing on most cars.

1,500 below invoice will be hard to come by, if not impossible. Some have claimed to get this much off invoice, but even when you factor in the 500.00 factory incentive, giving 1k under invoice cuts the dealer profit down to zero if not negative territory. The dealer holdback is reportedly 3%.
  • mssocalmssocal Member Posts: 3
Ok. After sitting on the fence for a while and going through this forum, I eventually bought the Ody EX-L DVD/NAV today in SoCal.

We started looking yesterday and sent few mails to the nearby Honda dealers from the Honda automobile website for quotes.

Couple dealers offered around 30,400 including destination, before doc fee and TTL. But the best quote I received was this morning from a dealer just 4 miles from my home.

    Here's the price:
    selling price: 30,197
    Total: 33,004 OTD

Instead of trying to pitch dealers against each other for any lower value, I thought it was very good price and I walked into the dealrship with the quote and had very pleasant and smooth experience. In fact the best car buying experience ever for me. People were very friendly and nice and there was absolutely no pressure to buy anything else. I paid exactly what was quoted to me and was done in much less than 2 hrs.

While at the Honda website I had applied for AHFC financing and was pre approved.

The dealer didn't try to sell me any other financing and I got the AHFC 2.9% APR for 36 months.

Thanks to everyone who have shared there experiences here.
  • raggedy1raggedy1 Member Posts: 29
great price! I don't know how Honda dealers in Socal are doing it, but the "normal" numbers would suggest that your dealer just sold you an Odyssey at a loss. We know dealers wouldn't do that so there must be some other incentive other than the 500 dollar factory to dealer incentive we know of...
  • dorudoru Member Posts: 1
first of all thanks to all who posted their buying experiences on this forum. this helped me tremendously.

on friday we purchased our exl from henessy honda - woodstock - near atlanta for $27,100 + tax, title. this was a cash transaction and the price offered to us was the best we could get in atlanta, chattanooga, knoxville and cleveland tennessee (we live in chattanooga).

what stood out was how pleasant the sales person - armando - was. he told me their bottom price over the phone and when i got there did not try to haggle me with cheap sales tactics or change his story. i must say this was the best experience we have ever had when buying a car.

i thought that my research may be able to help someone out there. here are the dealerships that we contacted:
    henessy honda - 770 924 9000
    team honda -
    honda of cleveland -
    west side honda - knoxville
economy honda - chattanooga - call them if you have lots of $$$ (they will love to help you part with it)
    ed voyles honda - atlanta
    curry honda - atlanta

    Hi everyone,
I am in the market for a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX or EX-L and I've found several used ones in the Chicagoland area. My question is : what should my expectation be on how much a dealer will sell a used '06 EX, EX-L (say, less than 10K miles) when compared to the new ones?

I know I can get a brand new EX for 25K in this area + TTL. And an EX-L for 26,800 + TTL roughly.

If I wanted to buy a used certified '06 EX, or EX-L, where do I begin with negotiation? Several thousands less, several hundred less than a new?
  • bao1bao1 Member Posts: 60
sounds like a great deal. I am trying to get the same deal from Albert. Can you tell me what date you bought your van?
  • otguyotguy Member Posts: 37
    Croftonhills,

Yes, the $26,800 was EVERYTHING except TT&L. For purposes of this forum, I think everyone should specify quotes on this Forum as price + TTL. Out the door prices vary because taxes vary by location. Invoice minus $XXXX is confusing too because "invoice" can mean different things to different people.

    good luck!

  • odiopusodiopus Member Posts: 47
    bhyde,

Do your quotes include TTL? The best Drive out quote I've gotten is still $28,900 or $26,835 plus ttl. Not bad, thinking about finally pulling the trigger.

    Hi all,
Thanks to everyone who has filled the forum with so much info! We have been looking on and off for a year at a new vehicle for me. We're replacing my PT Cruiser, which no longer works very well with two children.

Long story short, we visited a local dealership on Saturday to testdrive the Pilot and the Oddessy....I was still torn as to whether we should get the SUV or the van. The salesman was *extremely* helpful- we had our two kids with us and also wanted to try out carseats in both vehicles. The salesman carried the carseats into the showroom for us, kept the kids entertained while DH and I looked over the vehicles, and had no problem with my request to test drive both cars. We even told him outright that we were not interested in buying a vehicle that day, as it was getting late in the afternoon and the kiddos needed lunch and naps. :) The sales manager did come over and give us the "what will it take to put you into a car today" speech, but they were still cordial when we stood firm with wanting to leave. The salesman helped carry our carseats back to my old car and gave DH his card.

Saturday night, after some more research here and after receiving some Internet quotes from several other So.Cal dealers, DH called the dealership back and spoke to the salesman...told him we wanted to get an EXL for $26,500 (which we knew was not going to fly LOL). They negotiated a bit and we agreed to come in Sunday morning to purchase a white EXL for $27,500.

Showed up at the dealership and went thru about an hour's worth of haggling over the trade-in value of my 2003 PT Cruiser. We had some difficult because the car had a custom paint job worth about $2k, which of course the dealer didn't want to add into their offer. Eventually we settled on just under $8k for the PT (which was fine with me since it had a minor fender ding in the back which we would have had to fix if we sold it ourselves). I still wasn't happy with the price of the Oddessy, tho. The $27,500 included a "pro package" for $591- mud flaps, wheel locks and the cargo tray. Eventually, we split the difference and our final price was $27,300 +TTL.

We put some $$ down, as well as trading in the PT, and the rest we financed thru Honda Motors for 2.9%/36 mos. (great rate by the way!)

All in all, a pleasant experience. They knew we were 'in a rush' due to cranky toddlers and made the paperwork process just fly. DH was in and out of the finance office in less than 10 minutes.

DH said the purchase of his Subie was less painless because all the 'haggling' was done over emails/internet, but buying the Honda wasn't bad at all. It probably would have gone much quicker if we didn't have the trade in.

At any rate, I feel we got a fair deal thanks to all the info here. Thanks all!
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
You can begin the negotiations wherever you want but why bother? The selling price of a certified used '06 is not likely to be much less than a new one. Late model Hondas, good as they are, are not particularly great values used due to their prices.
  • mamamobilemamamobile Member Posts: 4
I've been emailing a number of dealerships in S. Florida. One dealer offers an OTD price on an EXL that's much better than anyone else. Just about $30K even including taxes, tags, everything. I've used his offer as leverage with the others and now have two other dealers willing to match his offer. (Not beat.)

Where do we go from here? Just pick which of the three dealerships we want to go with, or do we see if one can do better than the current financing Honda offer (2.9/4.9)? Or is there any other wiggle room? I'm kind of a novice at negotiating! ;)

I am trying to deal with Marysville too and was only quoted $800 under invoice on an Odyssey with DVD and Navig, $30873. Am I not getting the best deal? Did they tell you that all the Odysseys were $1100 under invoice?

How did you get $1100 under invoice at Marysville? They are only quoting $800 to me for an Odyssey with DVD and Navig, $30873. Did they tell you $1100 for all Odysseys?
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
As I think you know, such a price is not all that great compared to some other areas of the country. My dad bought the same model at Space Coast in Cocoa in early May for 30K out the door.

What you've seen thus far shows where your local market is -the other stores would not beat the first dealer's numbers so you are probably close to (or at) the best figure you'll find there.

While it's difficult to offer advice here (because I don't know exactly what might have been said in your email correspondence) my suggestion is to now go with the first dealer unless the price is still too high. If you need a lower number, then just send messages to all three saying what you number is. Example: I will buy tomorrow if the OTD is $29,500 (or whatever your number is).

You might also look at post #13256 from a couple of days ago for some quotes in the Tampa area (it might be worth a trip).
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
His price was for an EX-L RES, a model in less demand. You might try Honda East or Hugh White (which beat Marysville when I bought my Touring R&N last year).

You sound very informed. I don't know all the lingo but can you tell me OTD means. Just to confirm, you got a leather seats, nav and entertainment for $33K? You bought - didn't lease right? Thanks.

First and foremost, Thank You so much to this forum! The information that many have shared has been empowering.

I have test driven the Ody with the DVD and NAV system and believe me, my husband had to drag me out of the minivan, because I loved it so much and just wanted to take it home.

Starting last Thursday, from the Honda website I sent out about 25 emails to dealers all over So Cal. I got about 10 emails back with initial quotes ranging from $31,500 to $39,200(yes, you read that right!). After a second round of emails asking for $1500 under invoice only a handful came back with "we'll beat your lowest quote". After going back and forth, I finally got a dealer that offered $30,350 (including dest.). I emailed two or three other dealers asking them to beat. One offered $10 less, another offered free wheel locks and splash guards. Still one said "when you're done, we'll beat it all". I decided to go with a local dealer and forego driving 30 miles to save $10. Here are the numbers:

    Car: $30,350 including destination
    Tax: $2,507
    Doc: $45
    Ext Warranty: $1,260 (8yr/100mile/$0 ded)

I also took advantage of the 4.9%. Such a deal.

I might have done a little better on the extended warranty but I didn't want to really haggle so I just showed them what I had and they matched it.

Since our purchase on Saturday, my husband has become like a little kid at a candy store, he can't believe how great the Navigation System is, let alone the Rear Entertainment System. He's already watched a movie or two with the kids and also hooked up the PS2. Kids can't believe how much this awesome new car can do!

    Good luck to everyone!!

I just got back from the dealer today after putting a deposit on an EXL w/RES and NAV at a great internet price. They don't have the color I wanted so they have to go get it from some other dealer.
Anyways, they said that they had an EXL with Nav but no RES. Anyone else heard of that? I thought the two were bundled by Honda.
  • cochbrcochbr Member Posts: 13
This board has been AWESOME! It has offered everything a forum ought to - education, opinion, strategy, and a sense of community.

I had been shopping for either an EX-L or EX-L RES. My target prices (INCLUDING $550 destination charge/EXCLUDING Tax, Title, License) were $26,000/$27,500, respectively. I emailed numerous dealers in Southern California and the few lowest quotes were $26,400/$27,800, respectively.

Today, I planned on visiting Spirit Honda, Sierra Honda, and Penske Ontario Honda. Spirit Honda didn't work out, so off to Sierra Honda in Monrovia I went. Of all the internet sales managers, this one salesman (who shall remain nameless according to posting rules) at Sierra was the most thorough, patient, accommodating, and NON-PRESSURING.

Save the details, I was sold on the EX-L RES NAV when I had a chance to see it work. Problem was, NAVs are in short supply. Sierra Honda didn't have one (neither did Spirit Honda), so had to do a dealer swap for one. This is the deal I got:

    EX-L RES NAV
    Slate Green Metallic
    Splash Guards
    Wheel Locks
    $30,100 Buy Price
    $45 Doc Fee
    $2,487 Tax
    $259 License Fee
    $8.75 Tire Fee
    -----------------
    $32,899

I cannot say enough about the internet sales group at Sierra. I give them the highest marks. I felt ZERO pressure to buy, and while I could have probably gotten the car a bit cheaper, dealers do need to make some money and the staff certainly deserved to earn from this sale. They even bought me lunch in their on-site cafe, AND delivered the Ody to my home (20 miles one-way) since I went to the dealer alone. OH, and I did take advantage of Honda 2.9% financing.

Thanks to all that have posted here and shared. I hope my post helps some, for whatever time remains on the '06 Odys.
  • cochbrcochbr Member Posts: 13
-No charge for the dealer swap - supposedly some dealers charge some.
-FREE OIL CHANGES for the first 30,000 miles.

    That's it!
