So you can now figure either what you are willing to offer as profit or how low dealers are willing to go.
The Anonymous Dealer
A fantastic buying experience at Marin Honda thanks to Brent and Craig. I highly recommend them!
Rather than pit one dealer against another for another 100 dollar savings, I found the deal I liked and went forward. There were a couple of dealers begging for my business if they could knock 100.00 off Marin's offer. I chose to give my business to the store that didn't play games and were up front about everything.
Anyways, I discovered the forum today and I'm blown away by these unbelievable prices. I would be happy to give them an OK profit just to make my experience a good one. Any recs for dealers within 100mi of Northern VA and what a decent price should be. From what I'm reading, this trim w/NAV and RES are somewhat harder to come by. Thanks all!
The fantastic prices paid (claimed) by some posters have to be put in question when the numbers don't add up. In other words, dealers cannot give cars away at a loss. Unless there is some "secret" holdback or factory to dealer incentive, there is no way people can be getting 2k under invoice.
Perhaps we're not getting the full story. If someone has a trade in then that needs to be disclosed. Obviously the dealer will be making money on the trade in so the difference can probably be found there.
I'm not expecting 2000 under invoice but the dealer I went to made the EXL w/DVD and RES sound so rare that I should expect to pay 2000 above MSRP. After reading this board, I don't believe I'll be calling him back.
Is this the right price??
best regards
the tax rate is the huge difference in the deals that are being posted. If I paid 5% LESS than my OTD price, I could subtract $1,534.40 from my total for a new OTD price of $32,010.00
So that sounds much better, doesn't it? But it's not reality since we have an 8.25% tax rate up here in NorCal.
with the factory holdback factored in, that price would have the dealer giving the car away at a loss...
Unless of course there was a trade in and they fudged the numbers that way...

My quote was 31,600.
Your's is a lot better than mine. I saw elsewhere in this thread that someone paid 29,800 for this in Crystal Lake.
I'm very surprised people are posting prices paid under invoice, I haven't gotten a single internet quote in the Denver area for less than 26K + TTL. What gives?
The factory is offering dealers a 500 dollar incentive on the Odysseys, so many dealers are willing to pass this on. Be persistent. It helps to have several dealers in your area.
When I started my internet search, the first quote I received was at invoice and a couple of offers over invoice. Then I started letting dealers know about the 500 dollar incentive and their offers began to drop.
I'm happy with the 1k under invoice I received. It still allows for a dealer profit, although it does figure out to about 1% of their 30k investment which doesn't sound too good from a dealer perspective. They may be taking very small profits at this time of year but I guess it balances out over the entire year where, for example, they get much better margins on the new model year cars sold late in the year (early in the model year of course).
Good luck with everyone's search for an Odyssey.
1,500 below invoice will be hard to come by, if not impossible. Some have claimed to get this much off invoice, but even when you factor in the 500.00 factory incentive, giving 1k under invoice cuts the dealer profit down to zero if not negative territory. The dealer holdback is reportedly 3%.
We started looking yesterday and sent few mails to the nearby Honda dealers from the Honda automobile website for quotes.
Couple dealers offered around 30,400 including destination, before doc fee and TTL. But the best quote I received was this morning from a dealer just 4 miles from my home.
Here's the price:
selling price: 30,197
Total: 33,004 OTD
Instead of trying to pitch dealers against each other for any lower value, I thought it was very good price and I walked into the dealrship with the quote and had very pleasant and smooth experience. In fact the best car buying experience ever for me. People were very friendly and nice and there was absolutely no pressure to buy anything else. I paid exactly what was quoted to me and was done in much less than 2 hrs.
While at the Honda website I had applied for AHFC financing and was pre approved.
The dealer didn't try to sell me any other financing and I got the AHFC 2.9% APR for 36 months.
Thanks to everyone who have shared there experiences here.
on friday we purchased our exl from henessy honda - woodstock - near atlanta for $27,100 + tax, title. this was a cash transaction and the price offered to us was the best we could get in atlanta, chattanooga, knoxville and cleveland tennessee (we live in chattanooga).
what stood out was how pleasant the sales person - armando - was. he told me their bottom price over the phone and when i got there did not try to haggle me with cheap sales tactics or change his story. i must say this was the best experience we have ever had when buying a car.
i thought that my research may be able to help someone out there. here are the dealerships that we contacted:
henessy honda - 770 924 9000
team honda -
honda of cleveland -
west side honda - knoxville
economy honda - chattanooga - call them if you have lots of $$$ (they will love to help you part with it)
ed voyles honda - atlanta
curry honda - atlanta
I am in the market for a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX or EX-L and I've found several used ones in the Chicagoland area. My question is : what should my expectation be on how much a dealer will sell a used '06 EX, EX-L (say, less than 10K miles) when compared to the new ones?
I know I can get a brand new EX for 25K in this area + TTL. And an EX-L for 26,800 + TTL roughly.
If I wanted to buy a used certified '06 EX, or EX-L, where do I begin with negotiation? Several thousands less, several hundred less than a new?
Yes, the $26,800 was EVERYTHING except TT&L. For purposes of this forum, I think everyone should specify quotes on this Forum as price + TTL. Out the door prices vary because taxes vary by location. Invoice minus $XXXX is confusing too because "invoice" can mean different things to different people.
good luck!

Do your quotes include TTL? The best Drive out quote I've gotten is still $28,900 or $26,835 plus ttl. Not bad, thinking about finally pulling the trigger.

Thanks to everyone who has filled the forum with so much info! We have been looking on and off for a year at a new vehicle for me. We're replacing my PT Cruiser, which no longer works very well with two children.
Long story short, we visited a local dealership on Saturday to testdrive the Pilot and the Oddessy....I was still torn as to whether we should get the SUV or the van. The salesman was *extremely* helpful- we had our two kids with us and also wanted to try out carseats in both vehicles. The salesman carried the carseats into the showroom for us, kept the kids entertained while DH and I looked over the vehicles, and had no problem with my request to test drive both cars. We even told him outright that we were not interested in buying a vehicle that day, as it was getting late in the afternoon and the kiddos needed lunch and naps.
Saturday night, after some more research here and after receiving some Internet quotes from several other So.Cal dealers, DH called the dealership back and spoke to the salesman...told him we wanted to get an EXL for $26,500 (which we knew was not going to fly LOL). They negotiated a bit and we agreed to come in Sunday morning to purchase a white EXL for $27,500.
Showed up at the dealership and went thru about an hour's worth of haggling over the trade-in value of my 2003 PT Cruiser. We had some difficult because the car had a custom paint job worth about $2k, which of course the dealer didn't want to add into their offer. Eventually we settled on just under $8k for the PT (which was fine with me since it had a minor fender ding in the back which we would have had to fix if we sold it ourselves). I still wasn't happy with the price of the Oddessy, tho. The $27,500 included a "pro package" for $591- mud flaps, wheel locks and the cargo tray. Eventually, we split the difference and our final price was $27,300 +TTL.
We put some $$ down, as well as trading in the PT, and the rest we financed thru Honda Motors for 2.9%/36 mos. (great rate by the way!)
All in all, a pleasant experience. They knew we were 'in a rush' due to cranky toddlers and made the paperwork process just fly. DH was in and out of the finance office in less than 10 minutes.
DH said the purchase of his Subie was less painless because all the 'haggling' was done over emails/internet, but buying the Honda wasn't bad at all. It probably would have gone much quicker if we didn't have the trade in.
At any rate, I feel we got a fair deal thanks to all the info here. Thanks all!
Where do we go from here? Just pick which of the three dealerships we want to go with, or do we see if one can do better than the current financing Honda offer (2.9/4.9)? Or is there any other wiggle room? I'm kind of a novice at negotiating!
What you've seen thus far shows where your local market is -the other stores would not beat the first dealer's numbers so you are probably close to (or at) the best figure you'll find there.
While it's difficult to offer advice here (because I don't know exactly what might have been said in your email correspondence) my suggestion is to now go with the first dealer unless the price is still too high. If you need a lower number, then just send messages to all three saying what you number is. Example: I will buy tomorrow if the OTD is $29,500 (or whatever your number is).
You might also look at post #13256 from a couple of days ago for some quotes in the Tampa area (it might be worth a trip).
I have test driven the Ody with the DVD and NAV system and believe me, my husband had to drag me out of the minivan, because I loved it so much and just wanted to take it home.
Starting last Thursday, from the Honda website I sent out about 25 emails to dealers all over So Cal. I got about 10 emails back with initial quotes ranging from $31,500 to $39,200(yes, you read that right!). After a second round of emails asking for $1500 under invoice only a handful came back with "we'll beat your lowest quote". After going back and forth, I finally got a dealer that offered $30,350 (including dest.). I emailed two or three other dealers asking them to beat. One offered $10 less, another offered free wheel locks and splash guards. Still one said "when you're done, we'll beat it all". I decided to go with a local dealer and forego driving 30 miles to save $10. Here are the numbers:
Car: $30,350 including destination
Tax: $2,507
Doc: $45
Ext Warranty: $1,260 (8yr/100mile/$0 ded)
I also took advantage of the 4.9%. Such a deal.
I might have done a little better on the extended warranty but I didn't want to really haggle so I just showed them what I had and they matched it.
Since our purchase on Saturday, my husband has become like a little kid at a candy store, he can't believe how great the Navigation System is, let alone the Rear Entertainment System. He's already watched a movie or two with the kids and also hooked up the PS2. Kids can't believe how much this awesome new car can do!
Good luck to everyone!!
save some cash
Thank you
Anyways, they said that they had an EXL with Nav but no RES. Anyone else heard of that? I thought the two were bundled by Honda.
I had been shopping for either an EX-L or EX-L RES. My target prices (INCLUDING $550 destination charge/EXCLUDING Tax, Title, License) were $26,000/$27,500, respectively. I emailed numerous dealers in Southern California and the few lowest quotes were $26,400/$27,800, respectively.
Today, I planned on visiting Spirit Honda, Sierra Honda, and Penske Ontario Honda. Spirit Honda didn't work out, so off to Sierra Honda in Monrovia I went. Of all the internet sales managers, this one salesman (who shall remain nameless according to posting rules) at Sierra was the most thorough, patient, accommodating, and NON-PRESSURING.
Save the details, I was sold on the EX-L RES NAV when I had a chance to see it work. Problem was, NAVs are in short supply. Sierra Honda didn't have one (neither did Spirit Honda), so had to do a dealer swap for one. This is the deal I got:
EX-L RES NAV
Slate Green Metallic
Splash Guards
Wheel Locks
$30,100 Buy Price
$45 Doc Fee
$2,487 Tax
$259 License Fee
$8.75 Tire Fee
-----------------
$32,899
I cannot say enough about the internet sales group at Sierra. I give them the highest marks. I felt ZERO pressure to buy, and while I could have probably gotten the car a bit cheaper, dealers do need to make some money and the staff certainly deserved to earn from this sale. They even bought me lunch in their on-site cafe, AND delivered the Ody to my home (20 miles one-way) since I went to the dealer alone. OH, and I did take advantage of Honda 2.9% financing.
Thanks to all that have posted here and shared. I hope my post helps some, for whatever time remains on the '06 Odys.
