I went to a different station the next time I needed gas, and this time it went all the way to "full", with the automatic shut off. This time I thought the problem was probably with the other gas stations pump, and was relieved it wasn't my car.
Today I went to another station and the exact same thing happened as the first time. Only filled 3/4's but kept shutting off! Any ideas anyone? Guess I'll have to mention it when I bring the car back in. Really weird.
D I I'm not looking for a date but I did run a carfax report on your Jag.
It's a New York car, seems to be a 1 owner. Title is clean and no flood or salvage history.
Here's the history list:
11/4/94.......Registered as private vehicle.
1/6/95........Title issued
11/10/98......41K Miles, passed NY vehic inspec.
12/1/99.......51K Miles, passed NY vehic inspec.
12/27/00......63K Miles, passed NY vehic inspec.
4/26/01.......sold at auction. Listed as dealer sale
Hope this helps.

I have an XJ8L and I'm always afraid of the gas overflowing onto the trunk!
I'll try "fiddling" with the pump should it happen again. Thanks.
Yeah, I got the $10,000,000 to buy a Jag dealership in FL )
Suuure.... yeeaahhh... That's assuming one comes out on the open market in this lifetime.
I'll be dealing in a lot of used Jags tho.
1) I generally do not like extended warranties. And this from someone who (Until very shortly) owns part of 2 franchised dealers. They are generaly not worth the money. Also in FL they're an aggravation. Basically, if I dont sell them for list I'm putting my neck out on the choppingblock if the customer ever cancels.
2) The SE warranty is a heck of a value that being said... But I find that most are grossly overpriced and not worth it.
Bill
I know this because I was trying to "top off" my tank in my garage before a long trip last weekend. The Jag tank neck does NOT like gas can nozzles at all! I think I got a cup of gas in the car and about 1/3 gallon all over the garage floor.
The good news was that not a drop went onto the paint or into the trunk!
A little sand and a good airing out, and the garage is as good as new too!
My VDP is an XJ6-L wheelbase. I haven't had any trouble putting gas in. My Jeep GrandCherokee used to be able to take 1.5 gallons more after the pump would shut off. I think it had something to do with the design of the tank filler neck and the fact that the gas "foams" a little as the tank gets full. The foam causes the nozzle to shut off.
That's why I thought I'd try the gas can. Bad move!
I just looked at a 96 XJ6 at R-se-th-l. Not a very good salesman experience though. They wanted $24,900 it had 48,000 miles. They would not budge on the price.
No more Toyota/Honda's for me though. The test drive was all it took. Heck I may not even want a date once I get a Jag .

Go back in this forum and read Msgs #187-#190. Bill has provided some really good information on model years around what you're looking for and the profit the dealer should expect. Trade-in value on the car you mentioned is around $18,500. The rest would be dealer profit (minus any work they put into it).
Hmm... probably an $18K or so wholesale car, figure $2K recon/select warranty. Wait. A 96 can't be certified. Figure $1,200-1,500 in recon.. assuming they did it "right" (fresh Pirellis, fresh brakes..etc..).
I mean, fair retail is like... if that car is mint and in a good color.. like $22K or so. Maybe $23K if its THAT nice...
The trick is, Jags go for a fortune if theyre super clean and super nice and low mileage. Now, a 98 XJ8 with closing in on 50K miles is like a $23K car or so... With 25K on it... Its suddenly a $27K or so car to buy. With 65K miles, staring me in the face.. I wouldnt put a dime over $20K on the thing.
That being said, Color and equipment can make a huge difference. And prices can swing wildly. A Madeira Red or Amaranth VDP is worth $3,000+ less thana White, Silver or Topaz one.
Still, Why be silly and buy a Camry? Glad ya saw the light!
Bill
Thanks.
That being said, its' also the classiest IMHO
Best: Topaz, White (Esp in FL), Silver, Jade Green, Sapphire Blue, and then maybe Carnival.
Worst: Rose Bronze, Roman Bronze, Morocco Red, Amaranth, Madeira Red, Alpine Green, Emerald/Spruce/Sherwood Green, BRG.
That being said, I think that a Morocco Red 96 VDP is a stunning machine... And BRG is the classic Jaguar color, but the market sayeth otherwise.
Hope this helps!
Bill
Our '99 VDP's color code (on the door sticker)is HGF. What the heck is that?
Colors are definitely a perception issue. When we bought our's, I asked the dealer why the price was so reasonable. He said it wasn't a very desirable color.
We live in the Northwest and people seem to go out of their way to comment on the color. Neither my wife, nor myself have done a fuel fillup without someone walking over to comment on the car.
If you are zigging on a color when the rest of the market zags, cosider it a buying opportunity. If you hold on to the car for 5 years, chances are the rest of the world may zag with you.
DC
I dunno. Thought you had a Black one
Black is called Anthracite on 97-01 Jags...
Bill
My 1998 XJ8L is British racing green and I do think it's classy! My other choice would have been Westminster blue, which to me is also classy.
Next question: Does anyone know if the front headrests are adjustable? Looked through the manual and it only mentioned the back headrests.
If they are adjustable, how do they work? Tried pushing on them, but didn't want to break anything in case they weren't adjustable. Thanks in advance.
I mean, it is the national racing color of England!
On to the headrests... they adjust up and down electrically, just push north/south on the backrest switch on the side of your seat. (pushing the switch East-West moves the backrest fore and aft as Im sure you know
To adjust the swivel of the headrest, not the height, you need to push on it... do it somewhat carefully tho.
Bill
We've had it for a month now. What a totally amazing car. I drive a 930 during the work week and I can't wait for the weekend to drive the family around in the VDP. Torque is everywhere and the dynamics of the car give no hint of it's heft. Plus, our girls love to play Barbies on the dijon mustard trays. My son just loves to go fast.
Long live The Empire!
DC
If ya have a digital camera I'll confirm
Irrespective, glad you're loving it. They are amazing cars...
Bill
Also, on our 99'VDP, I tried pushing in the backrest tilt for the headrest (my Mom stumbled upon the North/South thing) but it didn't seem to want to go in.
I thought I'd ask you before taking a hammer to it.
DC
Try Coventry West (www.coventrywest.com) they sell used parts...
Or maybe eBay?
Bill
Thats not good. Figure I'd wack the car a solid $4,000 because of it. Well, I'd take it from clean book to no better than Average Book as they say...
Ordinarially I'd write a check for that car right now for $47,000 or so... But at the moment I'd appraise it at about $42,500 or so. So figure $5K or so on top of that for a retail price(Where I'd tell you you want to say "sold" if it was in your driveway with a for sale sign on it).
What you save now tho, you willlose down the road.. be aware of that.
Hope this helps!
Bill
I think that $30K seems fair to me at retail..
VDPs with miles around 45K in your neck of the woods (Northeast) are doing about $27K at the auction. Of course offer $28K I mean, You always want to ask! As long as they are still under warranty, their prices remain strong. With 55K miles its' suddenly a $25K car up there, $23-24K or so down here. But then you're out of factory warranty and that terrifies most buyers.
Its' the most valuable color the car comes in (arguably tied with White, especially in FL), deduct $2,500 if it was Amaranth.
Check it for paintwork, that kills their value...

Hope this helps!

Thanks!

These XJ6 / XJ8 JAGS are really one or two passenger drivers cars since the back seat leg room is very cramped. A passengers legs are humped up and are therefore without support of the rear seat which is low to begin with.
In other words, In my opinion, if you are going to have passengers opt only for the VDP or L series. The 5+/- inches makes rear seat occupants appreciate the ride and Jaguar style. Without it, anticipate stiff legs and ornery passengers, particularly on a journey of any length.
It is time to stretch the legs !

Well let me tell ya. I am one very happy guy. Never had so many people admire a car that I owned befor and I've had many. Get more looks, questions and drooling wana be owners than when I drive the wife's Vette.
Our drive back and forth to the Keys last winter was a DREAM come true. She purred like a kitten at 75 and 90 and growled like the predator she is whenever I floored Her. Don't need those gizmos, heck I don't even want them anymore. I now have 15,000 on her now and only one problem when I first got her with pulling to the right that the dealer said was defective bushings in front end. They took care of it and replaced the 2 front tires they said were unevenly worn free.
I had a 95 Eldorado I traded on the Jag. I'm looking for the trip to Fl from NJ now, a Trip I used to hate.
I've check out many sites on other cars, but this site is the most informative, intelligent and curteous I have seen. Keep up the good work.

Jags are like no other car or "cat" in the world.
They are pure artistry on wheels.
Ownership brings us numerous rewards not the least of which is the admiration of all who love great and beautiful automobiles.
In the many years that I owned Benz I never had the admiring comments and the favorable attention that the Jag accrues.
These are truly examples of beautiful auto design.
And, what a pleasure to drive.
Nothing else even comes close to a Jag in one automotive package !
Long Reign the "Cat" !

As I read your notes, I notice that quite a few of you are adding
upgrades and enhancements to your Jags.
I have done some of the same.
In doing so, I have come across a good place for Jag. parts, accessories and "neat" Jag items. They have been around for quite a while. (I am surprised that some of my Jag friends didn't know of them and this may be the same for you.)
Those that have dealt with them have good things to say about them. My expierence, likewise, has been good. (Incidently, "I get no commissions".... am just passing along some helpful info. that I have found beneficial.)
They are Welsh Jaguar Specialists located in Ohio and are able to be contacted at www.welshent.com They put out a periodic flier with neat stuff... such as Jaguar gift ideas... how about that guys ? We could just see that the brochure is put in a conspicuous place and maybe someone would get some ideas!
Anyway, log on and get on their monthly mailing list.
Happy Jag'n around !

I left a message on the other site under "classics" not knowing this site was there yet. I having been sitting here all morning reading all your notes back and forth and am feeling alot better about purchasing this car. I have been very nervous for the last three days wondering if I am making the right decision. I feel I need to purchase a warranty and probably will. My husband works for the Jag dealership here in town (not a mech.)and had a Mechanic check it out and they have the service records on it since they purchased it from auction years ago and now it has come back as a trade in. He says all looks good. I am just worried that repairs will kill me even though I am able to afford the purchase. Of course I probably will not drive it in the winter here even though they say you can and half do up here.
It's funny how people feel about Jaguars, you either love them or hate them. I'm glad to see so many lovers out there. Especially feeling the same way about BRG & the style the way I do...classy, classy, classy ! I have been test driving this car for a few days and don't think I can say no unless you have any good reasons why this is a dumb move for myself.
I will take any info/lip you can give me. I am going to check out www.jag-lovers.org tomorrow but right now am feeling pretty good about this site.

You husband works at Luther's Downtown? I knew someone from there...
$15K seems like a fair # If anything a bit cheapish...

I have a friend that has been at Downtown Jag for about 20 years. I also know a few of the guys that have been around for a long time there. My husband just started back in March and he brings home different cars every week, but when he brought home that pretty green car, I fell in Love all over again.
You know everyone & everything don't you ! Thanks for your response.
I go to Jag auctions all over.. and have been doing so for a few years, and I worked for Jaguar dealerships from 96-99... etc...
So ya get to know people There's only like 160 or so Jaguar dealers in the country.
They're probably selling it to your husband for $15K (Probably $500 over cost) as an employee purchase. Most dealerships do that. $19,500 retail makes sense to me, that's what I might ask for it (Not that I'd get it tho..haha)
You're going to love this car!

(A) 1997 XJ6 (mileage 35k+/-) (price:25K)
(color: Platinum)
(I) 1998 XJ8 L (mileage 35+/-) (price:37k)
(color: Topaz)
(1) What is your assessment?
(2) Prices fair.... what would be the appropriate buying range?
(3) Which of these would be a buy in your opinion and for what reason?
(4) What should be the considerations?
(5) Buy a warrenty ? If so which one?
I appreciate the recommendations ! I will pass them along to the dreaming - desirous party.'

Check out when the warranty expires on the 1998 (it has a 4 year/50,000 mile warranty). I found it helpful since there were things that needed to be replaced (bushings, front stereo speaker, hairline cracks on driver's door woodwork) all of which were still under warranty. Then I had a problem with stalling on the highway going 60 miles an hour! They replaced the ECM relay, as well as my battery since it was starting slow. This was all covered. I will be checking out getting an extended warranty before March, but I believe they are cheaper to get if the car is still under warranty. Just something to consider.
Regarding the 1998 XJ8
Relative to the price I received (even though my price was on an XJ8-L), you seem to have gotten a fantastic deal - 10K to 12K under the price quoted to me and yours has nearly 20K less mileage. You really did well !
I would like to hear what "Brentwoodvolvo Bill" thinks on this one.
Next time I need a car I think I will have you buy it for me ! ! !
Seriously, I would like to know who your "broker" was and how you came to negotiate such a deal. Was it an "on-line" purchase ? Just curious?
It is my feeling that the best way to go is to buy is a "Select Edition" -certified- for it has the "Jaguar factory warranty extension" which, though more expensive, gives the most comprehensive and is easiest to deal with warranty, particularly, if taking your "cat" to the Jag dealer for service. This "official" Jag warranty extends from the expiration of the original factory warranty out 2 more years and up to 100K miles, whichever comes first.
As you note, you experienced high satisfaction with the original Jag warranty for it is extreamly comprehensive and covers all of the items you mentioned and many more. This exact same warranty would continue for 2 more years - extension period. You can't beat it,in my opinion.
As to the purchase of other so called extended warranties, "buyer be ware". The "hassle stories" are endless. Maybe someone else will "weigh in" on this one. I am leery of "good deals" on warranties till after you have the experience of using them, then you will see, and only then, will you know "if they are worth the paper they are printed on. Having said all this, I am still willing to listen to others experience
In any case, I would shop Jag dealers for warranties, if you are so inclined, and think you will find it worth your while to do so.
Thanks for the advice, information and hope mine is likewise helpful.
These "cats" are sure beauties!
Christchurch
Thanks for the info on the warranty. My dealer is offering a 6 year/72,000 miles warranty for $2,723 with no deductible thru Warrantech. I found a 7 yr/70,000 warranty thru Warranty Direct on the internet for $1,875. Your opinion is that I go thru the dealer? I guess I wouldn't have any problem knowing that they're the ones who sold it to me. Just seems expensive.
Good luck with your purchase. Hope you find the right car. I love mine.
Thought I responded....
97? Platinum? Umm.,.. no color called that in 97... ?:|
Anyhoo.. if its' nice.. $25K is OK... those are great miles. Still, shoot for $24K or less as always!
98 XJ8L...
$37,000? Nutso $$. Nutso. $10K over wholesale. If its' a Select Edition I could see as much as $33,500 or so but $37,000 is WAY the heck too high.
Bill
I inquired from my friend about the color. He said he thought it was platinum. Anyway, he said it is a beautiful light gray / silver looking but not silver as we usually see it on other cars. What was Jag's name for it?
If he picks up the car, what should he look for in this year and model? Any troublesome issues?
Bill, I know we have talked warranties before, but this one would not be any longer under the original factory warranty. Any suggestions?
My impression is as yours, if it is really 1st. class, I think he should go for the '97. (He did see '96 (maroon)with 64K miles going for 25K =/- Advice ? ?)
XJ6's are still fabulous automobiles with only slight modifications in later years. I know you are "still on the road" in style in an XJ6 and I think you said you are pushing the 112K range.
Any additional input would be appreciated, thanks!
Christchurch
Now that you mention itm I have seen that color on the S type and it is really quite stunning in a conservative, elegant way.
I have always had a preference for darker colors. I think that they give a classy look. That is why I still love the deep red / maroons and the British racing greens and never cared so much for white Jags.
Anyway you color it though, these Jags are elegant automobiles.
And, can anything in the auto world compare to the nteriors..."standard" or, and especially, that of the Vandan Plas !
