Fees the dealer keeps are pure price-packing even if they're pre-printed on the documents--just reduce the price you're willing to pay accordingly.
A final pre-fee/tax price of $200 to $400 over invoice (without any other add-ons) is probably a fair deal if the dealer is convenient, well-regarded, and has the car you want or can get it quickly. Also note that if the dealer arranges financing, there is often a kickback from the lender to the dealer, so perhaps you should finance in advance with your own bank to get the best terms......Richard
$21050 + 230( registration + other fee? )+ %5 tax.
I am in MA. Anyone can tell me what is the rule here for the fees? Thanks
I don't have a car right now, hence no current insurance.
During the final stages I got a VIN number of the car I was going to buy, then I called my my insurance co (USAA) and gave them the VIN no to get a quote and they can start your coverage instantly. It's really an easy process, and you're covered from the moment you turn the key and drive the car off the lot.
Tell the ins. agent what type of the car you buy, its VIN, and the coverages you want.
You/the dealer cannot do the registration without the insurance binder. If you have the dealer to run the plate for you, I am sure they will ask for the phone # of your insurance agency.
On the delivery date, the car is registered and insured.
Test drive tommorrow. I know its not the lowest price on this board, but the difference is pretty trivial over the time I will likely have the car, IMHO.
I could understand a law that limits the fee - like no more than $50 or what ever. That would mean the dealer could charge less, but not more than the limit.
Anyone posting this "by law" stuff have a solid legal background - or are we taking legal advise from the salesperson?
"Why would they want to charge $50 to fill out a document that benefits them?"
Because there are paper pushers in the back that don't work off commition. Charging the doc fee pays their saleries so the dealer retains the profit from the sale.
Now don't get me wrong, the doc fee's are usually much higher than is acually needed, but I can see why they are there.
Thanks in advance

Guess I'm still shopping....
BTW, all these guys are matching up to Edmunds numbers (MSRP/Invoice) almost to the penny.

Opt for 7/100k plan if you drive a lot.
You do realize that you own one of the most reliable cars on the market. Yes you may say, I have heard about all these problems, the rotor problems, the squeaks and rattles, but does it really warrant the purchase of an extended warranty.
Think about it, you get a 7yr/100k warranty for lets say 1000.00, in actuality you are really only receiving a 4yr/65k warranty. For the money you are spending on the warranty, put it into a money market fund, and if a problem does arise, then use it, instead of plugging it into a warranty you will most likely NEVER use.
Also, it may be helpful to know that we have a dedicated Finance, Warranty & Insurance board which has all kinds of discussions underway that may help with some of those sorts of questions.
And of course if you don't find discussions that address your specific questions, you may always create a new one.
Good luck!
Also, there are features that apply from the first day -- for me, one of the most important features is that if I bring in the car for a repair or maintenance (other than an oil change), I will get a loaner car and get on to my job quickly. That is extremely valuable to me as sitting around a dealership fighting for a seat in the waiting room with Grandma and Grandpa is about my least favorite thing to do.
IMHO, I dont think people are not being intelligent by buying these if they are risk averse and like some of the other features that Honda Care offers over a regular warranty.

Had the car not been traded, it would have had about 5 miles on it......Richard
BTW, the test drive on the EX V6 went great -- we are getting one in Desert Mist (my wife insists on the color), and its scheduled to be built around 11/23 for delivery ver early Dec. See my post 3118 for pricing.
Max... I thought you had county taxes as well as a state tax in Cali.... if you do, the tax may cost more. Documentation fees, dest fees are fixed(510 I believe) and are charged by the manufacturer, you should be able to call the DMV and find out the registration costs, but in CA I doubt it's cheap. The above quote says it's ~500 for the registration.
Gonna take a stab in the dark and guess you are on the young side, get an insurance quote as well.
invoice + $50 = $21059 out the door.
I am at OK.
Also I am looking for 03 Camry LE or SE, but the prices local dearlers gave me are way above the invoice. I really can not understand. Is Camry so hot?
Also a question - any opinions on going for an '04 over an '03? I'm thinking the old rule is never buy the first year of a models design change. And I believe that applies to the '03. I've got to slow down. All this came together today between only two dealers.
MSRP: 28,400
Invoice: 25,551
Price: 26,500
Tax: 1,411 (I live in MD)
Processing: 100
Freight: 490
Total Price: 28,552 with "free" wheel locks, mud guards, floor mats and pin stripe thrown in.
Is this a fair price? I have an appt with one of the salesman tomorrow afternoon. I could use some advice here, b/c I'm considering buying tomorrow very strongly!!
Price may also depend upon supply a bit -- according to my dealer, there were only about four or five V-6 with NAV cars available for immediate delivery in the entire Minneapolis - St Paul, Minnesota area.
Floormats come with the accord, unless it is the ones that are actually printed "ACCORD" or those rubber ones.
Mudguards and wheel locks, well... maybe worth $100. I personally would highly consider about 500 over invoice as a better deal.
I would probably hit them up for 28k out the door and see what they do. navi is cool and all, but the 2k is worth about 400 come trade time, and there are a bunch of nice portable GPS navi systems out there for less than 2k....
BTW your numbers don't add up.
Price (26,500) + Tax (1,411) + proc fee (100) + freight (490) = $28,501 - its only $51 off -
Or maybe I just don't understand how you got to the $28,551
Car $26500, incl. destination
Wheel Locks 69
Tax 1594 (NJ)
Reg/Title 99
Document Proc. 118
Total $28380
In hindsight, I should have tried to get them to throw in the wheel locks for free, but it's a small amount. I tried to get them to lower the document processing fee, but they wouldn't move, and I figured it wasn't too bad a fee, and the other Honda dealer in the area has a pretty lousy reputation, so I didn't want to even try dealing with them.
The salesman tried to sell the car to me for $26800 today, but I whisked out his business card with the $26500 price written on it. Not a big deal, but I expected a battle. No problem though, although he wouldn't budge further from the $26500. I got 3.9% financing for 60 months, which is cool but I was a bit bummed because the salesman told me last week that I could get 2.9% financing for 60 months, but that turned out to be the rate for 48 months. Still, 3.9% is a good deal and I know Honda doesn't offer these deals too often. I wouldn't sign the contract until I got approved for the financing, figuring I'd sign the contract and get financing at something like 14%, being a first time new car buyer. This was a bit of a struggle with the salesman, but I won that battle.
The only thing that bothered me a little was they offered me only $800 for my '96 Taurus (paid $8000 for it 3 1/2 years ago, and that was from a friend) and they wouldn't budge. I told them no thanks, and they said no problem, and to let them know if I changed my mind. I'm pretty certain I can get $2000-$2500 for it selling it privately, although I didn't really want to go through that hassle. Still for an extra $1500 or so, it will be worth it.
Thanks to everyone who posted advice. I would have probably ended up paying quite a bit more without reading these posts. I'm picking the car up around the 28th of November, and I can't wait! Thanks again!!!
Great board.
I am shopping for a 2004 EX V-6 2dr Coupe (3.0L 6cyl 6M). Does anybody know what is relistic price in Dallas area?
Thanks.

The financial guy tried to sell me a 7yr, 70K extended warrenty for $750. I would like to know what price other people pay for this platinum warrenty and do you think it is necessary?
I probably should have waited but I've wanted my car for a LONG time and I decided this weekend to make the plunge!! I also got the extended warranty. I know, I know carbuyingtips.com said not to buy them b/c their overpriced, but my dad convinced me to go ahead and buy it b/c of all of the electrical components on the car!!
Thanks for all of the advice everyone. I asked that the pinstripes be removed as part of the car's prep. My asking price was $28K, but I didn't hold firm b/c I really wanted the car yesterday and the salesman told me that I wouldn't be able to get the price anywhere in the area!! I emailed other Honda dealerships in this area including Hendrick and College Park and Landmark was the cheapest quoted price. I think I did ok, but not great!!
Oh, well, I got my car and am really thrilled with all the different features. I feel like a kid who's just got a new toy during Christmas with the navigation feature!! I'm really enjoying my new car!!
1) Within the factory warranty's 3 years /36k miles period, extended warranty is essentially extra baggage
2) One can buy extended warranty right before the factory warranty expires at the same or lower price
3) Advantage of buying the x-war at car purchase time (and including it in the car note) is the lower APR of a car note versus say charging it to a higher APR credit card
4) One solution is saving $20/month up to the 36th month, and buying the x-war with cash then
5) Major disadvantage of buying x-war at car purchase time: unless the warrantor is Honda, a 3rd party warranty provider may not be around after 3 years
6) Another disadvantage is when selling the car within the 3/36 period - some buyers may not care for an x-war and thus ignore its value-add when making a price offer
My recommendation: Save $20/month during the factory warranty's 3/36 period and buy x-war with cash before expiration of factory warranty
I live in Northern IL. After talking with 6 different dealerships, I found my best price in nearby WI. It was amazing at the price difference I found between the six dealers all within 100 mile radius of each other.
Since I am not a resident of WI, I did not pay sales tax in WI. When I get get the title in IL, I will have to pay the 6.5% tax on the purchase price (my county's tax rate). I did have to pay $39 for a "quick title" in WI which gives me temporary tags for 30 days.
2004 4 Door EX V6 w/Navi (Silver/Black Leather)
$25,548 Price (includes destination, $50 service fee and $39 quick title, does not include tax (see note above).
1.9% for 36 months.
I absolutely LOVE the car. Navi is definitely worth the 2K!!! Don't let anyone fool you. Very nice quiet ride, smooth handling.
During the negotiation, the dealer let slip what their actual cost was ($25,159) so I thought letting them making $300 on the vehicle was a fair deal, given all of my research. As I mentioned before, some of the other dealers in the area where as high as $26,711, almost $1200 higher than what I paid.
The biggest negative in this whole experience was just waiting for my car. I had to wait about 6 weeks for them to build it. But now that it is here... I must confess, I'm glad I saved the $$ by not buying right away, shopping around, and finding the best deal. One of the advantages of waiting is that my car was not used as a demo car, so I was the first to drive it!!
To everyone who is considering an 04 accord, I highly recommend it. Best of luck, and again thanks to everyone for posting!
What kind of pricing should
i expect in this area.
Is the V6 worth the extra 2 grand?
Hey 04navi, what dealer did you deal with to get that great price?
thanks in advance
If you don't expect to burden the car that much, the 4 makes more sense because it's lighter in front, uses less gas, and you'll save about $1900 or more.
I didn't test the Accord V6--I've had fast cars (overpowered V8s from years ago) and I think the Accord 4 is a superb engine--you won't believe it's a 4 while you're accelerating.....Richard
If you don't mind, I would love to get the name of the dealership in WI that you purchased through (in addition to your sales rep's name)?
Being that the car is produced within very close proximity to me, it seems as if I would be able to get a super deal, but that's not the case. Therefore, I am willing to travel a little for a great deal and more than likely, transport the vehicle back to Ohio with my SUV.
Thanks in advance for your assistance. I can be reached via e-mail @ living4goodlife@aol (DOT COM). I have yet to begin initiating contact with nearby dealers, but I would surely like to include your dealer on my roster as well. I am simply hoping to send an e-mail requesting the specific vehicle that I am interested in. If it's there, then I will pick it up within 24 hours if they can meet my deal expectations.. Wish me luck!
Thanks!

Name of the dealer would be good.
Many years ago while living down south, bought a new accord in another state-was working 7 days a week-could not get off to buy a tag-so just pulled tag off VW Van and slapped her on the honda-forgot about it and never bought a tag for the next 5 years-big savings cause that state had a ad valorem tax-hard to beat that now-see cops pounding tag numbers into their in car pc's to check status now-progress I guess.
