I think the doc fee is limited to $45 in California and there's also a mandated tire disposal fee of $5. Anyone from a different state who faces a higher fee should find out what the fee is before agreeing to a before tax/fee price so it can be negotiated to a reasonable level.

Fees the dealer keeps are pure price-packing even if they're pre-printed on the documents--just reduce the price you're willing to pay accordingly.

A final pre-fee/tax price of $200 to $400 over invoice (without any other add-ons) is probably a fair deal if the dealer is convenient, well-regarded, and has the car you want or can get it quickly. Also note that if the dealer arranges financing, there is often a kickback from the lender to the dealer, so perhaps you should finance in advance with your own bank to get the best terms......Richard

I bought a 2004 LX V6 Coupe for 20,900 ($260 destination fee included) on 10/25/2003 in the Bay Area, Northern California. After Tax+License, no add-ons... $23,150 out the door. I believe I got a good deal.. and it seems like the trick is go at the end of the month.

The dealer told me the total cost of the car is
    $21050 + 230( registration + other fee? )+ %5 tax.
I am in MA. Anyone can tell me what is the rule here for the fees? Thanks

Can I insure a new car before I buy it (let's say that I know I'm going to buy the EX-V6 sedan)? If I am not able to do this, will the car be uninsured during my drive to my insurance agent? Thanks.

I don't have a car right now, hence no current insurance.
  • lelandhendrixlelandhendrix Member Posts: 240
This is the way it worked for me:

During the final stages I got a VIN number of the car I was going to buy, then I called my my insurance co (USAA) and gave them the VIN no to get a quote and they can start your coverage instantly. It's really an easy process, and you're covered from the moment you turn the key and drive the car off the lot.
  • chucko3chucko3 Member Posts: 793
You don't need to drive your new car to the insurance agency. All you need is a fax machine.
Tell the ins. agent what type of the car you buy, its VIN, and the coverages you want.
You/the dealer cannot do the registration without the insurance binder. If you have the dealer to run the plate for you, I am sure they will ask for the phone # of your insurance agency.

On the delivery date, the car is registered and insured.

Hi everyone. Longtime lurker, first time poster, possible first time new car buyer. I'm seriously considering getting a 2004 EX V6 Navi Accord, upgrading from a 1996 Taurus. I love the car, even though it's a bit smaller that I'm used to. Anyway, I went to a dealer near me and right off the bat he gave me a price of $26,500 for a loaded '04 EX V6 Navi with 2.9% financing for 60 months. This seems like a good deal, is it? I'm certainly going to try to get him lower, but is it a good deal at 26.5K? Thanks for any information, the posts here have been very helpful to me.
  • tblazer503tblazer503 Member Posts: 620
Since invoice is 26,041... you are basically getting it for about 450 over invoice. IMO, if there are any options you want like wheel locks($40 from honda), mudflaps(~100), moonroof visor($100)... it may be worth it to have them throw that in for the price OTD. That is what I would probably do. Then you are basically getting it for a few hundred over invoice, depending on taxes, etc. Find out what the OTD price is since the doc fee may be 500(extreme, but possible) etc.

FYI, just got an offer of $26,440 for a 2004 V6 w/NAV from a dealer in Minneapolis, Minnesota -- used that to get an offer from another dealer a little closer to me in St. Paul, Minnesota -- they wouldn't match it, but they came pretty close at 26,600, which was about $600 cheaper than their opening offer. Only charges not included are plates, sales tax and $48 documentation fee (required by state, I believe). Combined with a 1.9 percent financing rate from Honda for 36 months, I'm a pretty happy camper. I prefer to buy from the dealer where I have the car serviced to optimize my chance to get good treatment from the service folks. I still may go back to the first dealer if anything goes wrong.
Test drive tommorrow. I know its not the lowest price on this board, but the difference is pretty trivial over the time I will likely have the car, IMHO.

I don't claim to be a legal expert - and every state makes its own law - but I just can't accept that some states have a doc fee that is required by law. I have a hard time seeing the state law makers passing a law that says - every new car buyer must pay $199 to the dealer to cover the cost of printing the documents.

I could understand a law that limits the fee - like no more than $50 or what ever. That would mean the dealer could charge less, but not more than the limit.

Anyone posting this "by law" stuff have a solid legal background - or are we taking legal advise from the salesperson?
  • drummerboy_200drummerboy_200 Member Posts: 44
I don't remember seeing any posts about regulating the amount of the doc fee. What they are saying is, each dealerships must charge everyone the same doc fee, instead of just praying on the weak minded. You will however see different amounts between different dealerships.

"Why would they want to charge $50 to fill out a document that benefits them?"

Because there are paper pushers in the back that don't work off commition. Charging the doc fee pays their saleries so the dealer retains the profit from the sale.
Now don't get me wrong, the doc fee's are usually much higher than is acually needed, but I can see why they are there.

Does anyone know what the current "official" rates are for the Honda Care warranty, or at least can you give me an idea of what you paid? My dealer is quoting rates up to $1375 for a 7yr/100,000 mile warranty (down to $1200 for a 5yr/75,000 mile warranty) and that sounds a bit steep to me.

    Thanks in advance

Hondawarranty.com Its a Honda dealer.. they will e-mail you a very competitive price on the warranty. I'm not sure if there is a list price. They quoted me right around $900 for 7yr/100K, no deductible on my '02 CRV.

Given that Subaru offered $200 under invoice on an 04 Forester XT and Toyota offered $300 under on an 04 Camry V6 SE - $400 over seems a bit steep.
    Guess I'm still shopping....
BTW, all these guys are matching up to Edmunds numbers (MSRP/Invoice) almost to the penny.

We paid $980 (no tax) for 7/75k plan with no deductible last November for our EXV6.
Opt for 7/100k plan if you drive a lot.

Thanks, but hondawarranty.com did not work as an active address. However, I was able to locate at least one other Honda dealer in Massachusetts (curryhondacare.com) that appears to be offering discounts on Hondacare extended warranties.

    Guys and Gals,

You do realize that you own one of the most reliable cars on the market. Yes you may say, I have heard about all these problems, the rotor problems, the squeaks and rattles, but does it really warrant the purchase of an extended warranty.

Think about it, you get a 7yr/100k warranty for lets say 1000.00, in actuality you are really only receiving a 4yr/65k warranty. For the money you are spending on the warranty, put it into a money market fund, and if a problem does arise, then use it, instead of plugging it into a warranty you will most likely NEVER use.

Our Smart Shopper board is a great place to pursue the doc fees questions. This comes up a lot, understandably, and there are lots of folks there who can help.

Also, it may be helpful to know that we have a dedicated Finance, Warranty & Insurance board which has all kinds of discussions underway that may help with some of those sorts of questions.

And of course if you don't find discussions that address your specific questions, you may always create a new one.

    Good luck!

Statistically speaking, no doubt you are right about extended warranties. Some people (like me) are more risk averse than others. Also, the statistics that I suspect Honda uses to price their warranties I assume are based on their risk experience over the entire fleet of cars they have under extended warranty. I only have (or will have soon) my one car, and if there is a major failure, the statistics become irrelevant.
Also, there are features that apply from the first day -- for me, one of the most important features is that if I bring in the car for a repair or maintenance (other than an oil change), I will get a loaner car and get on to my job quickly. That is extremely valuable to me as sitting around a dealership fighting for a seat in the waiting room with Grandma and Grandpa is about my least favorite thing to do.
IMHO, I dont think people are not being intelligent by buying these if they are risk averse and like some of the other features that Honda Care offers over a regular warranty.

I think Curry Honda is the same dealer that used to run the other website.. Maybe Honda asked them to change their website name, to keep them from being confused with the manufacturer.

What is the acceptable number of miles on a new, non-demo car? <20 miles? <10 miles? How many miles did your new Accord have when you bought it?
  • richards38richards38 Member Posts: 606
My '04 EX-L sedan had 21 miles on it when I picked it up because the dealer had to trade a car in inventory with another dealer who is about 16 miles from there--my dealer had a red with gray leather and I wanted silver with black.

Had the car not been traded, it would have had about 5 miles on it......Richard
  • rbrrbr Member Posts: 113
Thanks for the information. Kyfdx, no problem -- you inspired me to search around, which is how I found the other dealer hondacare warranty site.

BTW, the test drive on the EX V6 went great -- we are getting one in Desert Mist (my wife insists on the color), and its scheduled to be built around 11/23 for delivery ver early Dec. See my post 3118 for pricing.

I live in Orange, CA. Can someone tell me inadditon to the price the dealer quote which is usually including destination and handling, what other fee should I worry about. Tax is 7.75% and what else? How much is license fee here? Is it a percentage? I'm clueless and would appreciate it if somone can help me out. I'm looking for an EX V6 sedan.
  • tblazer503tblazer503 Member Posts: 620
I had 47miles on mine, no dealer trade. Of course, October 2002, only 5MT in the area.

Max... I thought you had county taxes as well as a state tax in Cali.... if you do, the tax may cost more. Documentation fees, dest fees are fixed(510 I believe) and are charged by the manufacturer, you should be able to call the DMV and find out the registration costs, but in CA I doubt it's cheap. The above quote says it's ~500 for the registration.

Gonna take a stab in the dark and guess you are on the young side, get an insurance quote as well.

I got an offer for a 2004 Accord EX auto with air-bag:
    invoice + $50 = $21059 out the door.
    I am at OK.

Also I am looking for 03 Camry LE or SE, but the prices local dearlers gave me are way above the invoice. I really can not understand. Is Camry so hot?
  • johnlxjohnlx Member Posts: 3
I'm looking for an accord LX in the Boston area and I've got an offer of 17,300 for an '03 and 17,800 for an '04. Ed's invoice is 17,284 and 17,374 respectively. Both prices include everything except 5% tax.
Also a question - any opinions on going for an '04 over an '03? I'm thinking the old rule is never buy the first year of a models design change. And I believe that applies to the '03. I've got to slow down. All this came together today between only two dealers.

Ok, I know that I said that I would wait until December to shop for a car but I've got the itch to buy so I started contacting people. Per the suggestion from several at the board, I contacted Landmark Honda in Alexandria, VA and got the following quote for a 2004 Accord EX V6 w/navigational system:

    MSRP: 28,400
    Invoice: 25,551
    Price: 26,500
Tax: 1,411 (I live in MD)
    Processing: 100
    Freight: 490

Total Price: 28,552 with "free" wheel locks, mud guards, floor mats and pin stripe thrown in.

Is this a fair price? I have an appt with one of the salesman tomorrow afternoon. I could use some advice here, b/c I'm considering buying tomorrow very strongly!!
  • johnlxjohnlx Member Posts: 3
Ademtion, be sure to bounce that price off the dealers in your area first. I'm in the same boat - looking to buy tomorrow just to get it over with. I've got prices from two dealers and tomorrow before I head off I'm calling all the other dealers in my area and say "can you beat $..." Find your dealer at hondacars.com. Good luck.
  • rbrrbr Member Posts: 113
I agree with johnlx, but you're definitely in the ballpark. I am paying 26,600 for mine with similar fees. If you are talking tommorrow, you may want to go to surrounding dealer's websites (via the "request a quote" feature on Honda.com) yet tonight and do just what johnlx says to do. I posted at about 9 at night and I had three bids by 10-11am the next morning.
Price may also depend upon supply a bit -- according to my dealer, there were only about four or five V-6 with NAV cars available for immediate delivery in the entire Minneapolis - St Paul, Minnesota area.
  • kendridkendrid Member Posts: 97
Your prices seem about right. I am looking at an LX automatic an my price with all fees is $18,434 with an invoice of $18,093. I will be paying $341 over invoice. That price was achieved with no negotiating - they offered it over the 'net.
  • johnlxjohnlx Member Posts: 3
I'm finding this car buying experience very stress free! I've got a best price from one dealer and I'm just calling the others and asking them to beat it. And the more dealers I talk to the more I learn. I just learned that Honda is giving them 500 back on 03's. That explains the below invoice #'s I have. Well, I'm off to get the car. Good hunting everyone!
  • tblazer503tblazer503 Member Posts: 620
IMHO, don't get the pinstriping, , it doesn't do much for the value, and IMO degrades value later since they fade, not always evenly... got a '91 legend in the driveway(next to the '03 accord) and it has pinstriping on about 40% of the vehicle, except the two front fenders where my fiancees brother hit something and the repinstriped it with the fresh new stuff, leaving the old, faded stuff there...

Floormats come with the accord, unless it is the ones that are actually printed "ACCORD" or those rubber ones.

Mudguards and wheel locks, well... maybe worth $100. I personally would highly consider about 500 over invoice as a better deal.

I would probably hit them up for 28k out the door and see what they do. navi is cool and all, but the 2k is worth about 400 come trade time, and there are a bunch of nice portable GPS navi systems out there for less than 2k....
  • z71billz71bill Member Posts: 1,986
The deal looks a little high to me, but I am sure many people have paid more for an 04 EX with nav. The way I look at it you are about $1,049 over invoice. I would try and get them down at least another $550.

BTW your numbers don't add up.
    Price (26,500) + Tax (1,411) + proc fee (100) + freight (490) = $28,501 - its only $51 off -

Or maybe I just don't understand how you got to the $28,551
  • zhelderzhelder Member Posts: 42
Well, I did it. I took the plunge and bought a Black 2004 Accord EX V6 Navi. It was a positive experience. They let me test drive the vehicle by myself and I didn't feel pressured at all, although I'm glad I did some homework. Here's my deal:

    Car $26500, incl. destination
    Wheel Locks 69
    Tax 1594 (NJ)
    Reg/Title 99
    Document Proc. 118

    Total $28380

In hindsight, I should have tried to get them to throw in the wheel locks for free, but it's a small amount. I tried to get them to lower the document processing fee, but they wouldn't move, and I figured it wasn't too bad a fee, and the other Honda dealer in the area has a pretty lousy reputation, so I didn't want to even try dealing with them.
The salesman tried to sell the car to me for $26800 today, but I whisked out his business card with the $26500 price written on it. Not a big deal, but I expected a battle. No problem though, although he wouldn't budge further from the $26500. I got 3.9% financing for 60 months, which is cool but I was a bit bummed because the salesman told me last week that I could get 2.9% financing for 60 months, but that turned out to be the rate for 48 months. Still, 3.9% is a good deal and I know Honda doesn't offer these deals too often. I wouldn't sign the contract until I got approved for the financing, figuring I'd sign the contract and get financing at something like 14%, being a first time new car buyer. This was a bit of a struggle with the salesman, but I won that battle.
The only thing that bothered me a little was they offered me only $800 for my '96 Taurus (paid $8000 for it 3 1/2 years ago, and that was from a friend) and they wouldn't budge. I told them no thanks, and they said no problem, and to let them know if I changed my mind. I'm pretty certain I can get $2000-$2500 for it selling it privately, although I didn't really want to go through that hassle. Still for an extra $1500 or so, it will be worth it.
Thanks to everyone who posted advice. I would have probably ended up paying quite a bit more without reading these posts. I'm picking the car up around the 28th of November, and I can't wait! Thanks again!!!

Sorry, don't know about Dallas, but I got my 6 speed coupe for $580 over invoice, in Charleston, WV. Most of the dealers I shopped (OH, KY, WV) wanted MSRP or close to it for the 6 speed. It seems that the 6 speed is a relatively rare item to most dealers. I love mine - a real quality car and a blast to drive! Good Luck
  • redcoupe1redcoupe1 Member Posts: 1
I paid $18,390 including destination for the red coupe + 100 dealer processing, the price is $270 lower than invoice. I asked them to lower the price, but they run through the dealer network and found this is the only LX red coupe in 3 states (MD, PA, NJ), so they won't lower it further. I think the price is OK for me, but I might be able to do better if I could wait till Christmas time.

The financial guy tried to sell me a 7yr, 70K extended warrenty for $750. I would like to know what price other people pay for this platinum warrenty and do you think it is necessary?
  • ademptionademption Member Posts: 4
I paid $28,500 after a little haggling. I probably could have gotten it a little cheaper if I had negotiated it a little more and maybe shopped a few more places. I got it at Landmark Honda in Alexandria, VA. Price includes tags, MD tax (.052), processing fee ($100); freight ($490). Landmark was really busy yesterday and my salesman was dealing with 3 customers at the same time.

I probably should have waited but I've wanted my car for a LONG time and I decided this weekend to make the plunge!! I also got the extended warranty. I know, I know carbuyingtips.com said not to buy them b/c their overpriced, but my dad convinced me to go ahead and buy it b/c of all of the electrical components on the car!!

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. I asked that the pinstripes be removed as part of the car's prep. My asking price was $28K, but I didn't hold firm b/c I really wanted the car yesterday and the salesman told me that I wouldn't be able to get the price anywhere in the area!! I emailed other Honda dealerships in this area including Hendrick and College Park and Landmark was the cheapest quoted price. I think I did ok, but not great!!

Oh, well, I got my car and am really thrilled with all the different features. I feel like a kid who's just got a new toy during Christmas with the navigation feature!! I'm really enjoying my new car!!

    Some thoughts to consider:

    1) Within the factory warranty's 3 years /36k miles period, extended warranty is essentially extra baggage
    2) One can buy extended warranty right before the factory warranty expires at the same or lower price
    3) Advantage of buying the x-war at car purchase time (and including it in the car note) is the lower APR of a car note versus say charging it to a higher APR credit card
    4) One solution is saving $20/month up to the 36th month, and buying the x-war with cash then
    5) Major disadvantage of buying x-war at car purchase time: unless the warrantor is Honda, a 3rd party warranty provider may not be around after 3 years
    6) Another disadvantage is when selling the car within the 3/36 period - some buyers may not care for an x-war and thus ignore its value-add when making a price offer

My recommendation: Save $20/month during the factory warranty's 3/36 period and buy x-war with cash before expiration of factory warranty

Thanks to everyone for the helpful posts, it really assisted with my car purchase. Purchased last month, finally took delivery last week. Here is the deal I got:

I live in Northern IL. After talking with 6 different dealerships, I found my best price in nearby WI. It was amazing at the price difference I found between the six dealers all within 100 mile radius of each other.

Since I am not a resident of WI, I did not pay sales tax in WI. When I get get the title in IL, I will have to pay the 6.5% tax on the purchase price (my county's tax rate). I did have to pay $39 for a "quick title" in WI which gives me temporary tags for 30 days.

    2004 4 Door EX V6 w/Navi (Silver/Black Leather)

$25,548 Price (includes destination, $50 service fee and $39 quick title, does not include tax (see note above).

    1.9% for 36 months.

I absolutely LOVE the car. Navi is definitely worth the 2K!!! Don't let anyone fool you. Very nice quiet ride, smooth handling.

During the negotiation, the dealer let slip what their actual cost was ($25,159) so I thought letting them making $300 on the vehicle was a fair deal, given all of my research. As I mentioned before, some of the other dealers in the area where as high as $26,711, almost $1200 higher than what I paid.

The biggest negative in this whole experience was just waiting for my car. I had to wait about 6 weeks for them to build it. But now that it is here... I must confess, I'm glad I saved the $$ by not buying right away, shopping around, and finding the best deal. One of the advantages of waiting is that my car was not used as a demo car, so I was the first to drive it!!

To everyone who is considering an 04 accord, I highly recommend it. Best of luck, and again thanks to everyone for posting!

Looking for a deal on an 04 Accord V6 with Navi.
    What kind of pricing should
    i expect in this area.

Is the V6 worth the extra 2 grand?

Hey 04navi, what dealer did you deal with to get that great price?

    thanks in advance

Drive both the V6 and the 4 cyl. because the 4 will surprise you. It is very smooth, quiet, refined and fast--0 to 60mph in 9.0 seconds. If you plan to frequently carry a full load of passengers and luggage and/or haul a boat, etc. the V6 is probably a better choice.

If you don't expect to burden the car that much, the 4 makes more sense because it's lighter in front, uses less gas, and you'll save about $1900 or more.

    I didn't test the Accord V6--I've had fast cars (overpowered V8s from years ago) and I think the Accord 4 is a superb engine--you won't believe it's a 4 while you're accelerating.....Richard

I am also thinking about taking the plunge for an 04 Accord 2 dr EX V-6 with Navigation. Since I live in Ohio, I am willing to travel a little for the best deal.

If you don't mind, I would love to get the name of the dealership in WI that you purchased through (in addition to your sales rep's name)?

Being that the car is produced within very close proximity to me, it seems as if I would be able to get a super deal, but that's not the case. Therefore, I am willing to travel a little for a great deal and more than likely, transport the vehicle back to Ohio with my SUV.

Thanks in advance for your assistance. I can be reached via e-mail @ living4goodlife@aol (DOT COM). I have yet to begin initiating contact with nearby dealers, but I would surely like to include your dealer on my roster as well. I am simply hoping to send an e-mail requesting the specific vehicle that I am interested in. If it's there, then I will pick it up within 24 hours if they can meet my deal expectations.. Wish me luck!

    Thanks!

Same request-however you might not want to include the reps name as you will get a nasty email from edmunds if you mention a specific name. Don't know why that is but I got one-didn't know dealer sales reps were a protected class of people-have a considerably lower opinion of most of them.

Name of the dealer would be good.

Many years ago while living down south, bought a new accord in another state-was working 7 days a week-could not get off to buy a tag-so just pulled tag off VW Van and slapped her on the honda-forgot about it and never bought a tag for the next 5 years-big savings cause that state had a ad valorem tax-hard to beat that now-see cops pounding tag numbers into their in car pc's to check status now-progress I guess.

I bought a 2004 Accord Sedan LX V6 on 11/17/03 at Woodland Hills (CA) Honda for $21,200 (including Destination Charge). Invoice is $21,458. Well, that's what many web sites say the invoice price is. Who really knows for sure? I'd like to hear what others are buying the same car for.
