A V6 Limited at $19,286 is an incredible buy (as in, where is that???) if it's before rebates... if it's after rebates, it's still a decent deal, unless it's every rebate under the sun (in which case, it's $900-$1400 more than that in reality for most folks).

    Update-
I ended up buying the car at Courtesy Hyundai in Pawtucket, RI. Low hassle and no "gotcha" BS.
$15, 500 plus $95 doc and title fees for a TOTAL of:
    $15,595

State taxes and fees (which the dealer has no control over and makes no profit on) are-sales tax of $1085 and title/registration fees of $90.

    OTD of $16,670.
Keep in mind the sales tax is outrageous at 7% and there is no way around it even if you buy out of state.

I'm waiting to the late fall to pick up a used 2009 Limited with about 10 to 12K miles on it.....will save about 6 grand and with the warranty at 60k miles for a used car I don't think I can go wrong.

I've got a 2007 Hyundai Sonata GLS 4cyl that I leased for my wife and our lease is up in August and I can't figure out if I should keep it or not. My residual payoff is $10800. Its only got 22k miles on it as of now. By then I might have another 1k on it. What worries me is the low resale values on Hyundai so I don't want to pick it up and then get screwed later on if I try to sell it. But $10800 does seem like an ok price to me compared to what I'm seeing around in the market.

Just wanted as many opinions as I can get? Is this a good buy or should I return it? Thanks

End result, I went to Northtown Automotive, got the 2009 Sonata in White, with floor mats, trunk liner, cargo net, IPOD cable for $15,500. Walked in at 5 pm on a Thursday night, picked up the car the next afternoon. The Salesman Chris was very good.

I'm not sure I could have got any better, maybe only one or two hundred... maybe.

Again, no military or loyalty discount.

The white paint is premium car quality.

In California, you would have to pay 9% sales tax. I have an Audi I am trying to sell with the lease up 6/20. If I don't sell it by then, I have to pay registration and another extended payment on the lease.Don't buy it if you plan on selling later.. Sell it now. But I would probably keep it. You have a great warranty.

Chase is allowing me to sell the car , even though I am leasing it. One check will be made payable to the lease company and one to me for the difference from what they want. By the way, my residual was 14,700 and they have agreed to take 12,000. Some Lessors ARE negotiating the buy price. Call them. Maybe you can buy the car for less. Offer 8500.
  • melbedewymelbedewy Member Posts: 5
That's exactly what I paid for my cherry red automatic, minus the cargo net and Ipod, neither of which we need, after extensive haggling at 4 dealers. So it looks like $15,500 is the max anybody should pay for an automatic with mats-minus taxes and state charges which the dealer of course has no control over.

Is this the pearl white paint? That is a beautiful color.

Don't count on that low of a price. Two months agos my son was look for an '06-'08 used Sonata, 30K or less miles, for about $13K --One owner & not a rental fleet car. He couldn't find one in CT, NY or NJ at that price level.

He wound up buying a certified '05 Acura TSX with ~ 30 K miles for $15,000 plus tax, etc.

Hyuindais don't have the best "trade-in" values but their trade values have improved. And don't forget the old used car game. Get top dollar for your trade and pay top dollar for the new car. Get a great deal on a new car and get wholesale or less on the trade in.
  • melbedewymelbedewy Member Posts: 5
Well my Sonata went for $15,500 and I intend to keep it for 10 years which I think is a bargain for a semi-luxury car with power windows, locks, cruise, CD, XM, alarm, etc.
Plus I got $5000 trade in for my stripped 04 Accent (automatic and air only) which only had a clock radio malfunction go wrong in 5 full years. The Accord costs at least $7000 more and has a warranty seven years less. If you intend to hold the car there is nothing better out there than a Hyundai. Nothing.

Does anyone have any buying experience with the SE?
I really prefer the leather and alloy wheels.
I am guessing $17,500 or perhaps a bit lower but want to hear what others have to say
  • ippolitippolit Member Posts: 4
The high-performance Sonata SE becomes an even more exciting and willing partner for enthusiastic drivers with its own unique sport-tuned suspension. The new sport-tuned suspension features a 15 percent stiffer front spring rate, 10 percent stiffer rear spring rate, unique strut valving at all four corners and 27 mm front and 17 mm rear stabilizer bars along with unique 17-inch alloy wheels and tires.

I drove SE and didn't feel much difference with other trims, still too soft to my taste, vague steering. But as a family car, good enough.
  • billwardbillward Member Posts: 154
I really wanted to prefer the "Mid" car SE over the GLS, but from what I looked at with the price difference versus features, what really mattered to me were minor things, almost all of which were handled via Option Package 2 on the GLS, and weren't worth the price difference between the two. The ONLY two things that I really wish had been on the GLS with the option package that took an SE or higher? The leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and the upgraded cloth upholstery. My old Sonata is a GLS (back when it was GL-GLS-LX), and was a REAL step up from the GL... but now, the SE isn't much of an upgrade from the GLS with the Option Package, so the SE really doesn't have a place in the Hyundai lineup now.

The Limited is the Deluxe pakcage, with everything included... the GLS is either the cheap base car, or the standard mid level, depending on Transmission and Option Package. The SE just doesn't fit in now... maybe they need to make the SE a future Sonata Hybrid Station Wagon? I'd have bought one of those in a heartbeat!

Rebate is back down to $2000 per an email I received from a dealer. $500 owner loyalty.
  • mikebztmikebzt Member Posts: 44
Just got a quote of $17998 for Limited Base Model

    sounds like a good deal????
  • billwardbillward Member Posts: 154
Yes, that's probably a pretty good deal, so long as it's the ACTUAL rebates that you'll get (i.e., not every rebate imaginable, just the ones you qualify for).

For example, if you don't have a Hyundai, then you don't get the $500 owner loyalty rebate. Not a recent college grad? Good bye $400. Not in the military or married to someone in the military? $500. That's $1400 more than the quote.

OTOH, if they took into consideration your rebates, and that's the price, not bad. Not bad at all. Good enough that I would have been all over that a few weeks back when I bought my GLS I4.
  • mikebztmikebzt Member Posts: 44
Called them up and you got it. So now the price Jumped.
Now I am not interested in it

The SE has the following features not available on the GLS:
Larger diameter front & rear stabilizer bars
    P215/55VR Performance Tires
    17" Alloy (5-spoke) Wheels
    Sport-tuned Suspension
    Rear spoiler
    Fog lights
    Tilt & telescopic steering column
Sport seats w/ Leather bolsters and sport cloth inserts
    Available upgraded 240-watt audio system w/ 6CD in-dash

The following features are standard on the SE and included in the GLS Popular Equipment Package:
Power driver's seat with lumbar support
    Automatic headlights
    Steering-wheel-mounted audio controls
    Multi-function trip computer
    Chrome window belt molding

So there is a significant difference between the GLS and SE, with the SE being the sportier variant...

  • billwardbillward Member Posts: 154
Ah, but then the difference between the SE and the Limited comes into play; of the things mentioned, the rear spoiler doesn't matter at all to me. Neither does the Sport-tuned Suspension. The Tilt&Telescopic steering is standard on the limited, as are the fog lamps (and the 6CD in dash), and the tires and wheels... but the limited offers a lot of other nice features (heated seats, sunroof, leather seating, etc.) for not much more... the sunroof, all by it's self, is almost the entire price differential between the SE and the Limited. BTW, you left out the Solar Control glass, which is standard on SE, but only on the V6 GLS.

So the SE is kind of stuck in the middle; the important SE features (*to me, and apparantly to many others*) were the Steering wheel audio controls, trip computer, powerdrivers seat and lumbar support. The Automatic headlights are "eh" since I can do that easily enough, and the times when I have the autoheadlights on, they don't seem to turn on quickly enough (oh, and in my state, VA, they should also turn on if the window wipers are turned on automatically... state law, headlights on if window wipers are on, so I can't just "fire and forget" with them anyway).

Of the others, only the leather wrapped steering and shift knob, and the upgraded cloth are really important (the leather steering and shift knob are where you "touch" the car, and contribute to the feeling of quality in the automobile... Hyundai should just make them standard on all cars, as it would only add a minimal amount per car ($100 max, wholesale and in the quantities Hyundai would be buying), but would help initial perception so much...). 17" wheels? I've got a sports car, not important on my sedan; I'd appreciate having them, but I'm not going to pay more than $100-$200 more for them. Fog Lights? Got them on our 2003 GLS, and use them maybe four times a year, and I live beside the ocean; we just don't get enough fog to merit going out of the way to get them. Tilt and Telescoping? My wife and I like the tilt, but we (like many) are in the sweet spot for the default steering wheel distance (though my son could probably make use of the telescoping part); since the GLS comes with Tilt, there's no need for the Telescoping in our family. And as for the upgraded stero, that's an extra cost item on the SE, too....

So, the reason you didn't see us shopping an SE is because it doesn't fill a niche... they could have just put those as various option packages and sold more cars with them. Our choice was always between a Limited (I4) or a GLS (I4 or V6) with Option Package 1. And I have a sneaky suspicion that's true of most folks.

So, like I said, if Hyundai REALLY wants to differentiate the Sonatas, move the SE into a Station Wagon version; folks can already pretty much get the "Sport" Sonata in the Limited.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
So, the reason you didn't see us shopping an SE is because it doesn't fill a niche...

Well, it clearly doesn't fill YOUR niche. ;) It's aimed at a rather small segment of the market, one that wants more sports-oriented handling in a family sedan. Most folks buying a mid-sized sedan don't care about that (witness how many Camrys are bought every month). There were some complaints that the Sonata's ride and handling are too "soft". So Hyundai acted to address that complaint by offering a trim level with different suspension tuning. I think that was a good idea, if for no other reason than to let the car mags give the Sonata a better review--as did MT when they rated the SE I4 2nd out of 10 cars in a comparo, only behind the much more expensive Passat.

Personally the SE interests me, for the crisper handling but also because I like the 17" 5-spoke alloys much better than the alloys on the Limited. But frankly the GLS is adequate for my basic needs also.
  • ippolitippolit Member Posts: 4
Wow, didn't expect so much polemics about different trims.
$3000 rebate still there, till 6/30.
I am renting Sonata for a week right now, drove all the way to Canada.
It is GLS 4 cyl. with popular package, rental version.))
Seats fully adjustable, but missing telescopic steering. 4 cylinder surpisingly responsive, espicially initial take off in the city, gotta be careful in jammed traffic. On a highway, just put gear on 4th or 3th in manual mode for merging or quick overtakes and that's it. It satisfied me enough, so who needs 6 cyl. actually?)) And drive agressively. Usually. )) And what suprised me the most, a got 33 mpg on highway driving 75-80 most of it, except constructions!. It showed on trip computer which was same when I calculated by refills. The car leans minimally in corners, very good for a family car but no feedback from steering at all. Well, I guess Camry is no better.))
  • billwardbillward Member Posts: 154
Very true, the SE doesn't occupy MY niche, even though I'd love to have had the full up version in Limited trim; the "Sport" package could be folded into an Option Package for Limited, perhaps?

Oh, and I bet the dealer would sell you some of the SE's alloy wheels if you bought a Limited. ;)

  • steven39steven39 Member Posts: 636
hi folks, went to my local hyundai dealership to look at the 09 sonata's.found a dark cherry red gls with the bluetooth and floor mats for $21,015.00.dealer says price will be msrp minus the $3000.00 rebate brings my price for the car to $18,015.00.
plus the TTT.is this a good price???
  • jack47jack47 Member Posts: 312
In NJ the 14 auto gls goes for ~$16,000 (before taxes and tags).

Shoot for INVOICE price less the $3,000.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
You should definetely be able to do much better than MSRP minus rebate anywhere in the country, that would be for almost any make or model.

I agree with jack47, you should be able to get invoice price minus rebate most anywhere and below invoice minus rebate is many areas.
  • westernnywesternny Member Posts: 4
I agree with Jack. This is not a good price. You should pay under $16,000, closer to $15,500. Hope this helps.
  • mkosurumkosuru Member Posts: 2
No Military, No Loyalty and No Graduate discounts were applicable in my purchase.

Got a DMV allowance of $300.
  • bubbabill2bubbabill2 Member Posts: 1
just bought a 09 Sonata GLS auto I4 with floor mats and cargo tray for $15,400 in missouri, before TTT. MSRP = $20,785. Basic $3K + $500 loyalty rebates. also the 4.39% financing.

probably could have done a bit better, didn't realize there was market support money on the model. (didn't know it took a couple of days for all the incentive information to be loaded onto edmunds - the information showed up the day after I bought.... oh well, patience was never my strong suit)

used Fitzmall as comparable... dealer tried to pooh-pooh the idea, but came to the price close at the end.

definitely felt this site put good information in my hands prior to the negotiations (I had never seen a source for market support values before.)
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
You got a very good deal. Don't feel bad about maybe having to have gotten a better deal. You still got almost $5400 off MSRP and a good finance rate.

Good luck with the car & enjoy it.

I just got the price quote for 2009 sonata limited v6 with navigation. Out the door is $25400
    Is it a good price?
  • ray78ray78 Member Posts: 27
Purchased a 2009 Sonata Limited V6 w/o nav for $19500 OTD on 3/30/2009. It also had Bluetooth, mud guards, floor mats, cargo mats and cargo net. I am very happy with it. It is very quiet and fuel mileage is great (34 mpg on highway-430 mile trip).
  • xavxav Member Posts: 23
I don't think it is. On the phone here in CA I was offered $21,500 OTD.
  • sudhakarsudhakar Member Posts: 4
I am not seeing the kind of price that people seem to be getting (haven't seen a post from TX). I am being offered prices for GLS (with cargo tray, mats and mud guards) for 17350 +TTL and limited (with cargo tray, mud guards and mats) for 20941 + TTL. These prices aren't even close to what I see being reported on the board. Anyone from TX seeing better prices?
  • wb9696wb9696 Member Posts: 9
ray78 What are you calling OTD price for the 2009 Sonata Limited V6? I got a price quote of $19,200 + 389 processing fee + 3% sales tax + title tags = out the door price.
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
I can relate to what you're saying, prices in my area sound similiar to what you are seeing, you can almost get a Camry for what they want for the Sonata's. Guess the Tx market is a lot higher than other other area's
  • steven39steven39 Member Posts: 636
sudhaker, you are correct about the prices in texas being on the high side for a gls sonata.at the very minimum a 09 sonata gls with mats ect has a msrp of about 21,000.00-rebate of $3000.00 equals $18,000.00 and nobody pays msrp for a sonata which basically will loose half it's value when you drive it off the lot compared to a honda or toyota.
  • ray78ray78 Member Posts: 27
The price included dealer processing fees but not sales tax and title /license. I purchased the Sonata in Kansas and I live in Missouri, so other costs were paid in Missouri.
  • Karen_SKaren_S Member Posts: 5,092
A reporter from a finance magazine is looking to speak to consumers who purchased a vehicle and ended up with some options by the dealer at little or no extra cost. Please send your daytime phone number and the vehicle you own to ctalati@edmunds.com by Tuesday, June 16, 2009.
  • dave868dave868 Member Posts: 64
    $19,500 OTD? Whoa! I bought a V6 limited w/nav last Oct. Sticker was $28,300 + tax. I was happy with the $23,500 + tax (8.65%) I paid. But $19,500 OTD is amazing!

Based on your numbers a 4cyl GLS should be like $10k.
  • mhtnmhtn Member Posts: 21
I'm not sure if you're interested in this deal but I just got an email from Northwest Freeway Huyndai in Houston that if you buy a Sonata at dealer's list price (around @19,900 mspr for a GLS auto) you'll get an Acent ($9,900 msrp) for $1. And you don't need to be a hyundai owner to get this deal. If you're interested, I can forward that email to you.

Also, have you tried Champion Hyundai here in Houston? I got a decent deal for a 2008 Santa Fe from them. They're willing to deal and don't add cr*p like vin etching, under body coating, etc. to the vehicle. I can forward the contact info if you need it.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Is this the strippo Accent trim w/o AC? In Houston? If so, I can imagine how many folks will jump on that deal. ;) But it sounds good in an ad!
  • mhtnmhtn Member Posts: 21
I haven't checked with the dealer but you're probably right. However, I hope that they're willing to make a deal. I can't imagine anyone in Houston would want a car without AC especially at this time when it's really hot out there (97F today). I don't even want to test drive a car without AC in this hot weather.
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
Call North Freeway Hyundai. I can't give a salesman"s name here, but his last name is a popular game fish. If you are ready to deal, this fellow will deal with you. Tell him John L sent you.

    Hi all,

I am planning to buy 2009 Sonata I4 Auto Limited. I have been to 2 different dealers but their prices are not even close to the TMV by Edmunds.com.

Seems like their prices include so-called "Adjusted Market Value" that is about $1,800 higher than MSRP. After $3,000 rebate ($27,579 dealer price, MSRP $25,800), they were offering me $22,000 + TTL.

Is this fair price? Anybody has any experience like this? By the way, I live in MA.
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
    Absolutely not.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
You are within reasonable driving distance from areas such as northern New Jersey, which has Hyundai dealers that routinely offer MUCH better prices than those dealers you checked. I recommend that if you can't get a more competitive offer locally, give some of those Jersey dealers a call or email and see what they'll do for you, then either use those quotes as leverage with your local dealers or make the drive down to Jersey and get the car there. "Drive a little, save a lot" (slogan from a car dealer near me).

Is this is a good price for a 2009 Sonata GSL 2.4L with A/T and mats:

$14, 700 before tax, title and license fees.

After all the incentives and rebates deduction, the OTD comes out to be $16,600. Is this a good price?

    Thanks for any info.
