Bedard completed all of the necessary CT DMV paperwork ahead of time and the rep who delivered the car waited with me at DMV to make sure all went smoothly. I paid all of the tax directly to CT at the DMV. Given your distance, you likely will not have a Bedard rep with you at DMV in NJ, but I'm sure Bedard guys/gals can provide all the needed papers.
The registration and tax situation depends on your state's policies and whether you transfer plates or apply for a temporary or new plates. For CT, if the rep didn't deliver the van, I would have had to get the papers ahead of time to pay for the transfer fee and taxes.
As for taxes, check with your DMV to find out how you get credit for any taxes Bedard may take from you. The most they should take would be the 5% Mass tax.
I believe Honda's holdback is 2% (or perhaps one-half point more). Almost positive it is NOT 3%.
See http://www.edmunds.com/advice/incentives/holdback/index.html
thanks.

Odometer Reading 5 miles
I am paying with a check to them. There financing rate was over 4%
My finance rate is 3.42%.
Car is 200 miles away so I have one more cost.
Greyhound Ticket $31.50 and 9 hours of my time.
5 1/2 on a greyhound then 3 1/2 hour drive. I will pick it up this Saturday.
When we were at stalemate this is what I told them:
It has to be at my price because I won't drive 200 miles for a "todays market deal".
What they get. dealer holdback and one more vehicle sold to help with future alotments.
P.S. Even though I have given them a deposit I do not want to post the dealership name until Sunday.
Not too bad a deal, eh?

Sounds like the store is in Ohio (my state) and I await your Sunday post.
Prices seem to vary quite a bit by location and dropping rapidly in some areas.
Is that the same information you have?
Do any of you know of any dealership in the Tampa, or Orlando area that would give the cars
at $500-$1000 above invoice? I feel very uncomfortable paying higher than that.
Thanks for your help.
Last week 'Poway Honda' dealer in San Diego, CA put all 05' Tourings on sale. It was $32998 with 10" DVD installed by Dealer, the Touring MSRP is $35010 with no DVD. So it was a damn cheap deal. I am bot sure you still get it or not.
I bought EXL-DVD for $31660 ($750 off MSRP) about 6 weeks back, otherwise i would have bought Touring last week.
It also IS NOT bottom line profit for the umpteenth time! It HELPS pay for flooring and maybe a bit of advertising.
People who want to talk about holdback should also talk about the tremendous overhead and taxes a dealeship has to pay!
Mfr: Your price Mr. Dealer is $10,000. So give me the $10,000. Now out of that $10,000 we will take $300 and give it back to you when you sell the car.
I'm sure it's much more complicated than that ie payment terms, financing, et al. But do you consider that profit or is it more of a rebate?
Edit - sorry to reply Isell. But from a consumer viewpoint, holdback and profit is none of my business.
I'm not going to go any farther with this in this forum but it does get old!
Carry on...
Sure, demand can trail supply, but I can't see Honda artificially lowering the supply.
Anyway, near me, all the dealers seem to have a decent amount in stock. The longer waits seem to be for particular color/model combos. In particular, I think the RES units are backed up, because they didn't have enough components.

Rule of thumb that I use on Holdback - good to know it is there and exactly what it is but probably not something you should ever count on to get money off your deal. The only time I have ever used the Holdback arguement is when I special ordered a new vehicle at just below MSRP + extras that the dealer knew was not going to sit on his lot and tried to add another $3k to the price saying that "he had to make a little money" - I noted he was making the holdback 100% (which his manager agreed they were) so to stop with the padding or I would simply order from another dealer.
OK - enough said on this very slippery slope! Anything else goes on Holdbacks goes in the Smart Shopper board.
Thanks!
I called my insurance agent and he typed out a new card for me. That is because Honda Ody 05 is NOT listed in their chart. Then I spoke with DMV office and they said that I can take my old van plates with me IRRESPECTIVE of the fact that I may or may not use them for the new van ie: I could have gotten new plates but since it was all paid up for a year in Sept we just decided to keep the old plates since we are donating the old van. Okay Once you have cleared that with your local DMV office make sure that your insurance agent puts that plate number and says it is for the new van. This is valid for 15 days. Once you get your van back to PA in my case, then take it with the Bill of Sale and Title and Insurance to your local DMV office and they will give you the registration right away or mail it to you. In PA we have 10 days from the date of registration to get PA inspection and emission testing. Pretty simple. It sounds much more complicated that it is. I was quite worried about the whole process and was amazed at how simple it turned out to be.
We paid with a Home equity loan check. I had asked the dealer to hold my deposit as it was on my personal bank account. And I paid all that in one check. Also, I did NOT pay MA taxes though that was what they had told me. The dealership is honest as you can tell from a number of us who have bought from them, out of state! I have nothing to gain from any of these emails. I just want to thank you all for helping me at a time when I was convinced that Ody had to be bought at full MSRP. And edmunds.com has been helpful the last time I bought my CRV. So I can only return the favor by being honest with the other buyers. Good Luck and drive safely.
I just signed up at this forum today, but I've been following it closely for a few weeks and it seems verrrrry helpful. I got an offer of $35,243.82 out the door for an ex-l with nav. I haven't asked for a breakdown of the price. I live in VA. Can anyone give me their opinion on whether this is a good price or not? I'm assuming I'll pay $35,243.82 for everything, including tax and tags. Thanks.
Wonder if I will be able to do this in NJ? It is one option to avoid paying before you have inspected the van. Of course, that also means I have to sell the old one first, which won't make my wife happy if the deal on the new one falls through for some reason!

I'd also like to see the breakdown. My judgement of the deal is just on what I know of this site. The dealer may be quoting prices with extra warranties/add-on etc. Good luck.
1. Price of Vehicle (not to include DEALER ADD-ONS)
2. Options
3. Dealer Add-ons
(e.g they put pinstriping on it and charge you $200 even though you didn't ask or want pinstriping; they might also be putting accessories in the van such as a cargo mat which you pay more for at the dealer rather than buying it through someone like H&A - just tell them "no" on this)
4. Tax
5. Title
6. Document Fees
= Out the Door
You may have leverage on 1-2-3, 6 so it is important to know the breakdown.
Holdback is profit. It is profit hidden from the salesman. The dealership does not have to pay the salesman his cut on the profit from the holdback. Wheather he uses it for advertising, floor space or for year end bonus, it is money not spent therefore profit.
I undersand saleman get a % of the "profit on the sale". Every deal generates profit from many areas such as holdback, documentation fee (yes there is profit in this fee), amount over invoice, financing, dealer installed accessories, extended warrenties, etc. Dealerships tell their salemen holdback is not profit so that the can stiff them their percentage due.
I bet some dealers make money on destination charge. Odyssey are made in Alabama. The destination charge to Calif. is the same as the destination to Alabama. What if a dealer commits to a full truck load of (say) 8 vehicles. Does if cost $4120 (8*515) to deliver these vehicles to Calif. I would think so, but it doesn't cost $4120 to deliver them to Alabama.
I don't think the dealer get reimburst the holdback back from the Honda. The dealer never pays it. He just pays 97% of the invoice.
Most manufacture invoices (I don't think Honda has it) have finance reserve which is the amount of money to finance a vehicle for 90 days. This is reserve, so if a dealership turns a vehicle quicker than 90 days the reserve is not spent (i.e. profit). Does this profit go back to the manufacture or dealer I don't know. On the flip side if the vehicle is on the lot longer than 90 days you have used up your reserve. I believe it is always best to negotiate a vehicle that has just been delivered.
But, as noted, every dealer will give you the breakdown. It's just surprising you need to ask.

Freight charges are negotiated between the manufacturer and the logistics company handling the shipping.
I'm going to try to go for a short road trip this weekend (up to an hour), which will be a better test. I also want my wife to get a chance to see how comfortable the passenger seat is. I'll report back if we have any problems.
I assume you mean all '05 Tourings without NAV. I bought my Touring with NAV at Poway Honda last week, and it was either the first or second such model they have received there, and it had been on special order for a month.
I either have to make two trips or pay in full sight unseen.
Buying on faith that it checks out is a little scary. Pretty much have to depend on them to do a thorogh check out and prep. I will probably give them a detialed list of things to check (wind noise, etc), and plan to get there early, so that if there are any problems, they can take care of them on the spot.
One other option is to go early, inspect, and if it passes muster, drive back to the top of Jersey (Bergen county), to which ever DMV is closest, do the paperwork, and drive back up. Must be a DMV in Mahwah someplace, which is probably only 2.5 hours or so. Make for a long day, but you need to put some effort in to save the money!
