Using the aol "Internet" browser, I again got the same message twice saying the website does not exist. I tried again by directly typing in the link and it worked! My apologies (what was that about my not wanting to apologize? - why did you get that impression?)!

These cars are built in Canada and shipped to US dealers and then sold via this Anyauto broker. Thus they are US cars with US warranties.

Ok-I put an order in with a dealer (actually 3 of them) about a month ago and they all say 4-6 weeks. I know thats agressive. So I call them all just to let them know I am still here and see if we a VIN number so I can track it. All tell me late Oct to early Nov. Still not a biggie... but one guy says a leather shortage in Europe is causing the delay... huh? Anyone hear of this?

I haven't heard it but with the mad cow thing going on over in that end of the world maybe they have to be very careful.

Would sitting on mad cow leather make you a more aggressive driver ?

First, in light of what's going on in NY and DC, this is small stuff, but its still hurts my wallet..

I own a 1999 Grand Voyager w/ 48000.. my 2002 Odyssey is on the way, should be here w/in 2 weeks, and my dealer promised me $12000 in trade on the Voyager, shich I thought was very good...

Yesterday the transmission on the Voyager went and I need a new one... dealer says $2500-$3000 for new one...

I want retribution from Chrysler... I don't know what to do w/ the Honda that's on its way.. the $3000 cost out of pocket puts it out of my range especially if the dealer won't give me $12000 for it now... which is what I imagine would happen...

Does anyone know of any sites dedicated toward retribution for transmission problems from Chrysler....

PS. SInce 1986 I have been a honda owner with no problems on around 250,000 miles of driving... this was my first venture into American vehicles.. (we had newborn twins, needed a van and in 1999, couldn't wait the 6 months for the honda...)

Despite my patriotism and love of country, I will NEVER NEVER but anything from Chrysler, Ford or GM for as long as I live....

    Thanks in advance,
    Parker

I followed the link that ukrick posted, and I agree with raybear. Daytime running lights, heated mirrors, oversize windshield washer reserviour...these are the things which distinguish Canadian MARKET Odysseys from US Spec cars. They will not be backed by a Honda Warranty when purchased in the US. I'd also be very surprised if the odometer did not count kilometers rather than miles. Just go to Edmunds' "New Cars" area and try to spec any of the mentioned equipment on US Market Odyssey. You can't. Of course the web site does not make any mention of this. Caveat Emptor. (Buyer Beware).

Sorry to hear about the trans but here is the reason I have the extended warranty on my Odyssey. I don't care who's product you drive there is always that chance of something happening and to me the $895 I spent spread over the 7/100,000/0 deduct is a heck of a lot cheaper than the 3 grand out of pocket at one time. I would call the zone rep and see if some kind of deal can be had. Even if they only pay half, it's better than nothing. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and sugar is better than salt. In otherwards be sweet, polite, and if he won't help keep going up the latter until you run out of people to talk to. Also I sure wouldn't say anything about the Honda.

Before I ordered my 01 lx back in December I researched if there were going to be any significant changes or upgrades with the 2002's. I'm pretty sure I used Edmunds site and at that time no significant changes were mentioned. Well, for approximately $800.00 more the 2002 offers 240 hp with regular fuel, 5 speed auto transmission, side air bags, 4 wheel disc brakes,a quieter cabin, and a refined suspension just to rub it in. Can't help but feel a little burnt. Anyone else?

I was also looking into the 2001 Ody, but I'm glad I waited as long as I did. Now the 2002 sounds like the way to go. Used Ody's are listed for almost the same price as new. Only $1k-$2k cheaper. Go figure. I'm not THAT desperate.
  • silverodysilverody Member Posts: 14
The first info about the significant changes for 2002 leaked about May 01. I think it was posted on vtec.net. Since you ordered in Dec 00, no one knew about these changes except the inner circles of Honda Motors. I wouldn't beat my head over it. If you wait 2 or 3 more years, a better and newer Ody will be available. Rumor says a 4WD version or a Honda MDX next year. BTW, the price increase was only $350.

Suspended air travel leads to parts shortage
Honda will suspend production at its Alliston, Ont., plant on Thursday due to problems in procuring parts from the United States, where air travel has been suspended.

Thats the way it always is. If you had a 02 you can bet there will be something better in 03. Same as the 01 had more than the 00. The question is when do you draw the line and buy. Just like retirement. The longer you work, the more money you should make when you retire. The key is retireing with enough time left to enjoy it before you die. It's always a compromise. Just enjoy the 01 and be glad this is all you have to gripe about. You could have one with the bad trans or even worse. At the end of a 1/4 mile the 02 will be lucky to have you by a car length.

Do you own a computer? LOL. Computer is even worse. Is my PIII 500 Mhz a dog? :D
I got my 01 EX in July. I love it. I could wait till 2002 but I would not have enjoyed my summer vacation. 01 Ody gives you more than you need. I am wondering what kind of gas milage '02 240HP will get?

I was mulling over trading in my 2001 EX for a 2002 EX-L. The leather was the real incentive, but the extra ponies and new tranny was supposed to be the icing on the cake. Well, I test drove a 2002 EX yesterday and came away a bit surprised. Don't get me wrong...it's VERY nice, but I didn't notice a big power/handling/acceleration improvement over my 2001 EX (which my wife and I drove to and from the dealership). Maybe it is more obvious on a test track than around town or on the highway? It also didn't seem that much quieter than my 2001 ( I didn't notice a difference). I don't know if it was braking in shorter distances, but it DID have a better brake feel.

Now I'm not so sure about trading in. I prefer my 5 spoke wheels to the new 7 spoke wheels. I also went to the effort of having a 7" widescreen DVD system installed, and it turns out you can't get the RES in Canada (what's with that?) so I'd have to get it installed again!

Anybody else do a back-to-back test drive?? Anyone know if you can have the Honda leather dealer installed?
  • karnesjmkarnesjm Member Posts: 15
I have posted before that we are trading our 01 ody for a 02. The resale is so strong that we decided to trade now, while demand is so strong. I too regret not having known about the changes, but take a small hit now or larger one later. My suspicions about the performance gains were confirmed when I read the new Car & Driver mag "short take" on the 02. 0-60 is 8.1 seconds, 1/4 mile 16.5 sec @ 86 MPH (NOTE: in same mag 0-60 MPH on the new Kia van with a 3.5L V6 is 12.5 sec!). Not that we drive fast, but the extra 35 HP gives the van a sports sedan level of performance that will be felt in everyday driving. That is just one consideration- the 02's selling (trading?)point for us was side impact air bags. The links on the IIHS website shows significantly more driver & pass protection when the same vehicle is equipped with side airbags (Lincoln, BMW, & Volvo). Pray that we never utilize them, but we wanted the safest van for our family. THKS:)

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Canadian cars do lack the US warranty. It has been discussed at some length in these forums previously. Track down someone like isellhondas and I'm sure you'd get the correct answer, he works in the Seattle area so I'm sure he has experience with Canadian models.

I saw a pre-99 Ody van in a parking lot and it had steel poles extending out of the right and left hood and was 12-15 in height and somewhat thin with a an encircled H. I am assuming that these help with parking navigation. I really would like to get these because I'm used to driving a smaller car. Anyone know where I can get these? I didn't see them in Honda afterparts online companies.

For those 2002 owner, does the 2nd row captain chair recline in the EX-L model? If so, how far can it recline? Thanks.
  • phil47phil47 Member Posts: 394
Actually, at 8.1 seconds 0-60 mph, that makes it FASTER than many sedans!! I believe that figure is estimated by Car and Driver. It will be interesting to see how it actually tests. At around 1 second quicker, it will not make a huge difference to me in everyday driving around town (I don't drag race at red lights like I used to...).

You bring up a good point about the side air bags. Although I'd like them, they're not the most compelling reason for me to step into an '02. The '01 already rates extremely high in both NHTSA and IIHS tests (including side impact). I don't think I'm significantly compromising my family's safety.

As for trade-in, that is a valid point if you plan on selling the van in the next few years (or iftrading in now, like I might do). I plan on hanging on to my Ody for at least 7 years, so it has less impact on my decision.

Just talked to the dealer about an extended warranty an a 2002 RES. He tried to sell me a Toyota warranty 7/75000/0 for $935.00. He sail it was just the same as Honda and it didn't matter who the warranty was from. All Honda dealerships would honor it.

I told him I could get a Honda warranty over the internet 7/100000/0 for $895.00. He said he would research it and to call him back. I called back in one hour and he said he could do a Honda warranty 7/100000/0 for $850.00. I was shocked!!!

I guess he found what I was paying: MSRP plus $1100.00 for accessories.

I'll give everyone the dealers name when I actually sign the paperwork. Dealers are always shady!!!

2002 GG RES due to be built 9/22 (before the war).
  • peterparkerpeterparker Member Posts: 11
As my post #3211 states, I thought I needed a new transmissions... when I explained the problem to the dealer they actually said I probably needed a new tranny..

I explained to the Chrysler service manager that I had called Chrysler customer service and opened a file.. I also stated that I had seen references to an extended 'secret' warrenty on a site and that I thought Chrysler would pay at least half.. this got his attention..

2 hours later he called me and said that it was just a speedometer computer chip and that it would cost $100!!! But he then made sure that he had my ok to close the file on the incident...

I lucked out, but I can just imagine how may people get transmissions w/o needing them... I was ready to buy into it..

Bottom line... I'm back on track to get my 2002 Oddy as soon as it comes in.. I needed some good news this week.

    Thanks for the advise though...

Hey webslinger. Any chance that was a ploy to reduce the value of your trade in? If so, I wouldn't deal with such a shady dealer.

Peter Parker, congratulations! I felt so bad after reading your previous posts, now I feel very happy for you now.

Still waiting for my 02 MB EX-L-RES. I suppose to receive it by the end of Sept., now the production/shipping date becomes unknown after the horrible thing, the dealer has no info at all. Patiently waiting.

    Hi,

My sister bought her SS LX in March and now is thinking about buying extended warrenty sice her old dodge died(head gasket blew) on her and was sold to junk yard for $150. I am looking at 7 yr/100,000/$0 deduct Honda-care and would appreciate if some one could point to a hassle free dealership/personal experience. What I am reading from this post is that that people are buying it around $895.

And also till what time can she buy it, i.e. before 12/36K miles. Right now she has only 4500m on her van. We live in Dallas/Ftworth area. Thanks in advance.

When you get an extended warranty make sure it is from Honda. Some dealers will try and sell you a nonHonda warranty and they may try and pass it off as a Honda Warranty
  • ody2002ody2002 Member Posts: 17
Okay, I have just called my dealer again, he said no delay confirmation is received from Honda, my car is still on schedule to be delivered by the end of Sept.

He also said another 2002 Ody MB EXL (leather) is avaliable by the end of this month too. If anyone lives in Charlotte NC area and wants to get the van, please let me know. I can tell you who to contact and get that VAN without waiting for months. You pay MSRP like what I do, I don't get any compensation for the tip.

    Regards.

Where can I see about an extended care Honda warranty on the internet? Are Warrantybynet or Warranty Gold pretty good deals?
  • tommyc6tommyc6 Member Posts: 11
Regarding 2nd row captain seats in the '02 EXL...I saw one at the dealers today and they DO recline. I'd estimate that they recline slightly more than halfway back. (with all the way back meaning flat.) When reclined to the max, the back of the seat is about even with the cupholders in the third seat. I sat in it and it seemed very comfortable. Hope this helps.
  • topgun7topgun7 Member Posts: 412
thanks. Look like we are going to take the pluge to start shopping for the 02 ody. I just finished email 20 or so dealers north and east of the SF Bay area. Will see how long is the wait and whether there is anyone willing to sell @ msrp. Anyhow, I was trying to use Priceline but they don't have the 02 up yet.. Will keep you guys posted.

I just received my disclosure sheet and it definately says 7/100000/0 warranty for $850.00 and no tax. I'll let everyone know after I pick up my GG RES. Probably early October.

On another note. My saleslady called today and wanted to know if I wanter to pick my oddy next week. Is she crazy!!!!!! I was at work and kind of busy. I was so shocked that I could only think of a couple of questions before I had to hang up. I told her I would call her back. Before I hung up I found out this Oddy was from another dealership and they thought they had sold it but it didn't pan out. When I called my saleslady back, two hours latter, and asked when I could pick it up she said it was sold. I was under the destinct impression she had already sold it to me! How does that work?
  • dmathews3dmathews3 Member Posts: 1,739
You asked her a couple questions and then told her you would call her back. You were at work and kind of busy. What was so important, were you dealing with the WTC bombing or other life and death decision? 2 hours later you call. What do you expect. If she read into your conversation the same as you typed here than I say you are out of luck. You snoze you lose.
  • larry110larry110 Member Posts: 21
I probably should of made my self clear. My job deals directly with the recent tragedies. Yes they are life and death decisions each and every day. Yes the saleslady knows what my occupation is and where she called. She had actually told me previously that she didn't feel comfortable calling me at work!

Thanks to all of you for posting information about the Odyssey. Based on what I've read here, my wife and I selected the 2002. If not for this group we would have a 2001 and not been quite as happy, especially since we wanted leather.

In particular, I'd like to thank whoever it was that posted about the dealer in Alhambra CA. It was frustrating waiting for days with all the local dealers who ignored my information requests. This guy emailed me back in 30 minutes, I got on the phone with him and we had a deal worked out in a few minutes. Collecting wife & kid, we went over that afternoon (Monday) and drove home that same night with our new car.

For what it's worth, we did end up paying $1k over MSRP (not $700), but then he had exactly what we wanted on the lot. From other posting, I gather that's something not very likely (shall I say impossible?). Other Westside LA dealers told me to take the deal since they are asking $2k over MSRP plus 4-6 weeks and won't deal, knowing they can sell anything that comes their way.

There was a little matter of fog lights, mudflaps and roof cross bars being added after the phone call, but I believe the guy when he said that wasn't his doing. He was out delivering a car and the dealership decided to prep the car as the showroom vehicle. Fortunately the guy put a stop to the work before they added the expensive stuff I didn't want. I'll accept these 3 items as somewhat useful options.

The little 17 month kiddo loves the van, she can get in and out and likes the view. After pulling a muscle last weekend wrestling the 24 pounder in and out of the old Camry back seat, it was definately time for the van. With #2 on the way, this was a no-brainer: get the van ASAP.

Must say this thing drives like a dream, almost as good as my Avalon and much much better than the 90 Camry. After driving many other vans for work, this one seems to be in a league of its own.

Willing to answer questions. It's about the only thing I can do to help give something back to a place that's helped us out so much.

Picked up our 2002 Ody.EX-L Fern ext./Fern int.,Wednesday night.List price 36900CAN,had offered 36000,dealer said the best he could do was 36400.So i sat there silently shaking my head for a few minutes, until the salesman said ok how about 36500 + lifetime oil/filter changes.I said you have deal and we did the paperwork, knowing that i will get my 500 bucks back eventually.

I had driven a 2001 about 2 weeks before, and also the same day that our 2002 had come in,for fresh comparison test drives. These are my opinions

ENGINE&TRANNY:Sorry Phil47,but i noticed a fairly large differance in get-up-and-go,as soon as i turned out of the lot and PUNCHED it!That 5 speed tranny really helps in all gear changes, but is very strong in 1st/2nd gears, due to the hp/torque increase.

SUSPENSION/HANDLING:I did not detect any real improvements in this area,as Phil47 had said maybe this would be noticed more on the test track or a much longer test drive going over various terrain? Braking seemed to be a bit more precise on the 2002,but the 2001 having rear drums still felt strong.

INTERIOR/NOISE:WOW!!! YES,YES,YES,Phil47,the leather is a VERY nice incentive.I've never been an avid leather person, but my wife wanted heated seats (for our sometimes harsh winters)and they are probably easier to keep clean with little kids.Just seeing a leather van beside a cloth van, confirmed it was the right choice for us,the leather makes the Ody.look very UPSCALE indeed. As far as the noise level goes, the 2002 may have had a little less engine sounds emitting into the cabin, when i did not have my right foot to the floor, which wasn't very often hehe.

CONCLUSION:Seriously folks when i was researching for a new daily driver for my wife and 16 month old son, these were the top 3 reasons we choose the Ody.1)SAFETY,SAFETY,SAFETY oh plus
    2)Interior Room
    3)Dependability (cross our fingers)

The only other vans that we considered and that past in the safety department were the Toyota & Ford, but went with the Ody.for the above reasons. When people are buying vans to haul their loved ones around,do your research on SAFETY,pictures WILL tell the truth, you do not even need to read the fine print.Sorry for the long post, everybody enjoy their 2001 & 2002 Ody's

As usual I have my foot in my mouth. I'm sorry for what I said, but you didn't make yourself very clear, and under the stress of what you must be going through it's a wonder you even had time for the first post let alone a response to my big mouth or in this case fingers. Hi, congratulation to both of you on the new van. I am also in the market for the 02' EX. However, I have some questions to ask both of you.
    1. I understand there is almost no negotiation on the price, everyone has to pay MSRP or up, but does everyone has to pay those extra dealer fees, like processing fee, prep fee... etc, other than the mandatory destination fee?
    2. About the trim level, I read the brochure that if you opt for the navigation system, you can't have the DVD entertainment center, isn't that true? Can't have both ?
    3. Also, I read somewhere that you can do some trick to the navigation system and make it a DVD player too, anyone out there knows how?
    3. My friend who owns a 99' EX told me that he had to pay extra to the dealer to install the alarm system even though the EX came standard with the anti-theft system. Isn't the anti-theft system the same as the alarm sytem ? Did both of you opt for the alarm system or the 02'Ex already comes standard with that ?
    4. soon2b4, how comes you did not have to wait in line for the new van like everybody does? As far as the accessories, I would buy at least the roof cross-bar online and intall myself because the roof rack that comes with the van is not useful without the bar, unless you don't mind scratching the roof when you use it. My friend had bought most of the accessories online and install himself, he bought the mudflaps, roof cross-bar, cargo tray, back-up sensor, etc..
    5. I like his 99' EX EXCEPT the wind/road noise. it bothers him and me a lot. Every time he is cruising on freeway, he has to turn up the radio or speak up in order to overcome the wind/road noise. I hope the 02' model will minimize the noise, anyone out there has a chance to compare the 99' and 02' wind/road noise problem?
    Thanks

Even though the '02's sounds great, we took a highway trip in our '01 today and I was just thinking about how smooth, car-like, roomy and comfortable this van is. As poster earlier, at some point you have to dig in and get the damn van! Every year has new things ('01 added alarm, better speakers and intermittent rear wiper over '00). All us '01 owners may soon want to feel eclipsed by the new features '02'ers, but we still have one benefit - substantially limited supply since Al plant was never on line, and when you sell the '01 there will be a lower supply.
After the unbelievable wait to get your Odyssey, that wait is really translating into remarkable resale value even this short time out. Just compare depreciation on a one-year old DC or Ford vs Honda. The Odyssey is the king of the road!
  • littlemillittlemil Member Posts: 4
As i had stated in my last post,i was able to get 500 bucks off of the Canadian MSRP of 36900 for the EX-L,but payed 100 bucks more to include lifetime oil/filter changes. The demand for Ody's is high up here, but does not seem as bad as some parts of the U.S.Also it is against the law for any Canadian dealership to sell a vehicle for more than the manufactures MSRP,unlike U.S.dealers who have bidding wars in some places.Yes i had to pay a $195 "Document fee" and a $34 "Registration fee",i knew that this would be mandatory before i began the buying process, thus i low balled from the start!

Even though the Ody is made in Canada,we canucks get bent over and done by Honda again, because the navigation/res systems are NOT an option for us.We were able to get our Ody in 1-1/2 weeks, because the dealer had the colour combination we were interested in,already made and being shipped to the dealership. So we put a deposit on this van, subject to colour approval.Well we can always get an aftermarket system put in if we so desire.Yes the EX 02's do come standard with the factory alarm,so we will only have to add on a remote starter and will be set for the Great White North winters eh!

Have been an Honda owner since 91 with my EX accord and purchased our 01 ODY earlier this year. Once I saw the SIGNIFICANT changes to the ODY (Major/Minor upgrades) I knew the time to trade up was now. Speaking from recent exp (Sep 01)the trade in Value of our 01 ODY EX is still very strong. We have a 02 GG EX L-RES being shipped 9/23 (cross your fingers) and have neg a trade in with the same dealer we bought our 01 from back in March. After neg with many dealers in the tri state area of AR/OK/MO we were able to neg 26K for our 01 ODY.(7K mls) Dealer is selling the 02 to us at MSRP with NO dealer doc fees. Other dealers offered 22K-24K for same vehicle. Bottomline trade is about $4190 and then a little to the tax collector. (AR allows Tax break on trade-in value) You might want to consider trading in the 01 before year end if you want to take full advantage of the current supply and demand. Once AL plant opens up, I expect 01's will start heading south.
  • ukrickukrick Member Posts: 66
We just signed the papers and put down a deposit for our Ody over the weekend. We test a drove a 2001 since all 2002's on the lot were sold. We could have bought the one we test drove with only 19 miles on it, but it was more expensive than the 2002. The dealer had added on pin striping ($100), Scotchgard($300), weather proofing($400), undercoating($200), wheel well trim ($100) for around $1100 extra. Apparently when new Ody's come in, that's their standard procedure to pocket extra profit. No way all that is worth $1100!!! I told our guy I wasn't interested. I can't believe I didn't have to go 15-rounds with him over it. We can't wait to pick up our new Ody in a couple of weeks!!!

About the dealer fees and such, we had to pay the $440 tansportation fee, $45 documentation, 8% sales tax, ~600 for the accessories, $241 for CA lisence and a CA $5 tire fee. All told that pushed the cost to just under 33K.

As for the alarm, all the EX series come with engine immobilizers and keyless remotes. Although some may say this in not an alarm, as far as I and my insurance company are concerned, it's an alarm.

Since I've no plans to use the roof, the cross bars are something I don't care about. It's too high to reach anyway. As others have noted, there are better places than Honda to buy the accessories. We did decide to skip the trailer hitch and buy it later since it was ~$1k retail. I don't need the extra cooling since all I want is to carry my bicycle.

The car, excuse me, minivan is fairly quiet, even on the freeway. You know there is more space back there than in a sedan, but it's reasonably quiet. The ride is smooth. Found myself looking for excuses to drive it. For what it's worth, the hooks for grocery bags in the back well are not really all that worthwhile. The well itself is the best holder.

Guess we just got lucky with finding what we wanted without waiting.

I drive by a Honda dealer every morning, and he's got two on the lot. How can you tell from the outside (without looking at the sticker, smart guys) whether it is an '01 or an '02?

Depends on how fast you're driving by...

Seriously, the 2002's have Amber (Yellow) turn signals in the rear -- all earlier Odysseys have red.

From the front, there are only 3 horizonal bars in the grill (Earlier models have 5, I think).

The wheels on the EX are different, but I'm not sure how noticeable that is.

01 has 5 spokes wheels and 02 has 7 spokes wheels.
02 has some new color like Blue and Red.
