I had the same question to my dealer for my 05 coupe 6mt. They weren't much help. I looked it up in the manual. it is a shift indicator / rev warning light. You can set the rev by using the trip meter button. After trip B, you will see the RPM setting the light is set to go off on. Hold the button down and you will be able to adjust the rpm. You can use it for 2 purposes:
1) as a shift indicator. Set the REV to the RPM you want to shift at. When you reach within 500 RPM of the setting, you will see a flashing red light. Once you hit the REV RPM you set, you will see a solid red light. Good for breaking in the car (set the REV RPM at 4000). You get a reminder (flashing/solid red light) that should shift so you don't over-rev the engine during break-in. I use it to remind myself I'm going 2 fast on the freeway. Set it to 3500 rpm and when you hit 80MPH (3000 RPM in 6th) you start seeing a flashing red light.
2- Red line warning: Set it to 7000 RPM and the light will flash then turn red when you hit redline. The redline marker on the tach isn't very clearly marked, especially during spirited driving.
Hoped that helped.
You having problems with weird noises from the clutch? My only real complaint is i get weird noises from the clutch and it isn't too smooth in 1st (shakes the whole car while engaging). Noises range from pinging noises as i engage gears 2-4 during medium acceleration to almost of a grinding noise when i rev the engine (in gear or neutral position). And is anybody's 6MT whinny (sound wise with the clutch engaged). The G whines more than my old honda. Any ideas?
The oil filter on my new 2005 G35X is the same filter that I use on my 2000 Maxima SE. Are not the engines very similar or perhaps the same, with some added performance enhancements on the G35 version?
It's the same engine -- the VQ35DE, found in the Maxima, 350Z, Altima, G35 coupe and sedan, Quest, Murano, FX35, and maybe some others. The oil filter seems to be the same, at least for the Maxima and the G35.
Just picked up 05 G35x, no problems so far except for not being able to find 120 sat channels. does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? (Just in case: I have read the manual and tried to follow provided instructions ...)
Sorry, as you can see I have not been checking recently.
I bought it near the end of the year. I used the internet to post my request to several dealers and they compete for a week. This is how much I paid:
$30,437(including $545 destination charge) + tax and license for a '04 Desert Platinum/Graphite w/Premium(p01).
A "Charity Deal", or "Meet the year end quota" deal as the sales manager put it , anyway , I think I have an excellent deal...they almost "lose money" to give me the car.
Not to insult your intelligence, but are you sure a Sirius tuner was installed? It's an add-on option (the car only comes pre-wired for the service), and you must activate a subscription (which Inifini pays for the first couple of months, I think) in order to get any of the channels.
I'm not sure about Sirius, but with XM there's a channel 0 which simply displays your radio ID to confirm the hardware is installed correctly, and a free channel 1 that confirms you're receiving satellite signal. (Other channels are blocked until you activate the system.)
G35 is a Z with a back seat. Same engine. No reason in the world why a Nissan dealer cannot work on this Infiniti. Like taking your Dodge to a Chrysler dealer.
I guess I should have mentioned that I do get some channels, seems like one or two in each category. the service isactivated and the tuner is installed.
I am a newbie here and also a new owner of a g35x 2004 sedan. While fairly happy with my purchase, (an upgrade from my 2000 Maxima Se)I have become frustrated with one major problem -
Any bright light that comes thru the back window (headlights in particular) hits the wires in the window creates large white reflective streaks. It looks like white lines above and below the light source. It is so severe it impairs my view thru the mirror.
I called the dealership and they said they have heard of this and it is normal with tinting with the only resolve being removal of the tint.
For a car that is over 30 grand, this does not sound normal. Does anyone else have this problem and so severe? Any better way to resolve? This "model" is not new per se and if it was a problem originally, I would think it would be fixed by Infiniti by 2004.
I've had professionally-installed metallic tint on both my G35 and my last car (BMW 530i), and I can confirm the visual effect you're describing. Perhaps a poor installation job or a low-quality film exacerbates the problem, but I grew accustomed to the effect fairly quickly, and I do not notice it at all anymore. I suppose it's a small price to pay for the other benefits of the tint--keeping the interior cooler, protecting the leather and dash, and the external aesthetic improvements--but to each his own, I suppose.
Got my 2005 G35 RWD auto sedan with pkg C & Nav on 8Jan05 & have noticed that each time I start it and place it in gear I hear a short clicking noise. It is a very brief (1 sec), distinct & very audible staccato noise that happens approx 10 seconds after placing the car in gear & driving forward or backward. It seems to be coming from the engine compartment and occurs after the engine has been off for any period of time. I never hear it while driving. For a while I thought it may be something resetting itself (?).
The car has 627 miles on it and it has done this since day one. I am interested to know if anyone has noticed this and if it is a normal event. I'm just looking for assurance that I don't have a potential problem. I've got a call in to my sales rep'
Yeah heard it a couple times in loaner G's and maybe twice on my FX. I usually have my radio up so I don't hear it often. I have been in toyotas where it was extremely loud. it is common with ABS equipped vehicles.
Colonel35 - thanks for your input. The problem I am facing is that the "flair" around the wires is beyond extreme. This is a non-metalic tint. I have never seen anything like this. I can understand "seeing" the wires in the glass at certain angles but on a freeway, I virtually cannot distinguish cars if the freeway is full at night. I gather a visit to the dealer is in order inspite of on the phone hearing only way to solve this is to remove entirely the tint (I think a removal and new tint is in order).
I am surprised by what you are reporting. I have had tint on my windows since I got my car almost 3 years ago and I do not have this problem. I am curious as to the degree of tint that you had installed. I went with I believe a 70% tint on the back window which is very very dark and a lesser tint on the side windows. I have a black car and from the outside looking in the back window in virtually black ( looks very cool).
The only thing that bothered me after I did this is my auto dimming rear view mirror obviously does not auto dim anymore as the tint block out the brightness of lights. Perhaps you should check your rear view mirror and turn off the auto dim feature, this may help. I too avoided the metallic tint as the installer told me it would probably effect radio reception.
I do however have a problem with the front windshield (not tinted). At night the dash lights reflect onto the front windshield. I do not have to look at speedometer, just have to look at top of windsheild to see how fast I am going. All the gauges are reflected on the top of the windshield. Yes I have tried dimming the dash lights, but there is still a reflection. Only have put up with this for 5 more weeks and then I am in my new M35. from what I see of the design of the new M35 gauges I don't think I will have the same problem.
Check again w/ the dealer .The service isn't activated yet.Same thing happened to me last month. I brought it in and now get all 120 channels. You get 15 channels at the beginning when its not activated. At least thats what they told me. BTW "classic rewind" is my favorite !
Hi Gabman - the 2004 G35x came with the tint already on the windows. I am unsure what the percentage of tint is on the rear window.
All my windows are tinted with the back being darkest. I get a lil' bit of reflections in the front window but nothing like you described. My rear view mirror auto dim does work when I am on the freeway and there is a lot of light. Then again, when I am on the freeway I see only headlights and the flair above/below and nothing else. This all seems beyond unsafe.
There is a button on the auto dim rearview mirror to turn it off, I am curious, try turning it off and seeing if the flair still persists. I am surprised that the auto dim mirror still works with the tint. Cannot be is very large degree of tint if the auto dim still functions.
Please let me know.
Gabman
P.S. I had a a 2004 G35X as a loaner last week for 3 days and did not notice the problem you described. Do all G35X come with factory installed tint?
Hi Gabman, - the tint is an after factory option. The dimmer on the rear mirror goes on only on freeways where there are lots of headlights otherwise it is rare if at all on. As for the flair, you can turn around and see it directly on the rear window.
Tomorrow, I am going to another dealer and tell them I had a 3rd party put the tint on and ask them why this is occuring. - Perhaps they may give me insight (not knowing that a dealership provided the tint).
Btw, I may be putting a lil lucite "visor" extention over the gauge window and clock to see if it cuts the tiny bit of reflection on the front window. For me, its very very little and onl noticable if I look up to the top 25% of the glass. - I'll let you know how it goes.
It worked, thank you pkl123. I guess I should have known better than to take dealer's words for granted... but the car was already bought and I let my guard down Called Sirius directly and had my radio activated within few minutes.
I own a '97 I30. My father has a '03 Q45. I've driven the G35 coupe and sedan, and the I35 as well. All of the newer models seem to have the problem you describe. My '97 doesn't. There's one little feature on the newer Bose systems that seems to exacerbate the problem. All of the newer models have dolby noise reduction. It supresses only the high pitched noises. One problem, it doesn't discriminate. It supresses all highs. Turn it off. That should give you some improvement.
FYI -- A few weeks ago my ATC light, Slip light, and Service Engine Soon light came on and the gas pedal cut out. Apparently the car went into some kind of limp home mode where the gas pedal doesn't work but the engine is overpowered enough to let you drift along at a few mph. I was afraid to turn off the car and be stranded, so I drifted 10 miles, mostly on a highway, eventually drifting up to about 40mph (I must have had a tailwind). As I got off the highway the gas pedal started to function again, and once I got home I discovered that turning off the car and restarting it cleared the problem (except for the Service Engine Soon light).
(There was a service bulletin for older G35's with that pattern of warning lights, but it didn't say anything about loss of power and limp mode.)
Anyway, my dealer checked my car today and found the error code indicated a bad sensor, which they tested and found was outputing such a weak signal that they really wanted me to have them replace it while I was there rather than risk a problem while driving again.
The hilarious thing, though, is that while I was waiting there a fellow came in with an identical 2004 G35 AWD with exactly the same problem. Only the car he was having trouble with was the dealer's loaner! It was so funny! Er, um, maybe there's a pattern here?
Just remember -- there's a good chance that you can clear the limp-home mode just by shutting off the car & restarting. If you have the problem I did, have the dealer check the error code in case it can be fixed so you don't suddenly lose all power again while you're driving along like mine did.
I have had my 2004 G35x since August and really like the car. However, my milage has been terrible--in the low teens at best. I do mostly short suburban trips (2-4 miles) and do not drive it very hard. I live in Chicago so I have had to deal with winter conditions for part of the time. Have other owners been getting similar milage in similar conditions?
I don't know what my mileage has been, but the car sure does seem to use up gas noticably faster than my old Maxima did. Seems a bit of a gas guzzler for its size, but I love the performance and handling.
I have an 04 G35 with 4500 miles. Most of my driving is highway (average =85% highway/ 15% City). I have noticed that the G is very sensitive to the speed at which you are driving and of course how hard you are driving it. That being said, I am averaging about 21mpg with conservative/moderate throttle input. This is pretty far off from the EPA of 18/26. I have noticed during the times when I do more city driving, the mileage really drops off. Everything else about the car has been great (except the brake dust).
I have an '04 Couple with 18" wheels and AT -- and practically from the day I've owned the car, noticed a wind noise that I think is coming from right over my left shoulder. It seems to start right as the car gets up to 60 mph.
I've looked through the posts in the various G35 forums, but haven't read anything about this problem. Has it happened to anyone else?
In December I took the car into the dealership and they replaced the entire driver's side window molding. They thought that would do the trick but driving the car home that night I heard it again.
I'm going back this week for the 3750 oil change, and will have them address it again. The first time I went in, I took a technician for a ride so he could hear it himself, but traffic was so heavy on the freeway nearest the dealership (can you tell I live in Los Angeles?) we couldn't get the car up to 60mph.
To make the noise bearable, I just turn up the sound system. Contrary to what others have reported here, I LOVE the Bose system --and it also plays the iPod quite nicely thru the cassette adaptor. Thank god Infiniti still offers a cassette player.
Sorry for the ramble -- I'm interested to hear what others say.
Hi craiginni #1513....... a few days after I received my G35X, it went into your "limp home mode". it felt exactly like I was in fifth gear (automatic) so it started out from zero miles an hour in fifth gear. I pulled into the dealership and my salesperson came right out and drove the car. He couldn't believe what it was doing!!!! But I made a mistake and shut off the engine while he went to get the mechanic. Of course when we restarted the car, it was "fine". It did it again one other time and that was the end of the "fifth gear syndrome" for the last 7 months.
I just took delivery of a 2005 G35 coupe. I do not want to mount a front license plate unless I get a "fix it ticket" here in California. A while back a saw a posting for a license plate mounting which screwed into the vehicles "towing screw mount" behind the front fender access panel. The ad said it was designed for quick removal for shows. I have not been able to relocate this ad. Does anyone know about such a device for quick mount and dismount of a front license without punching holes in the front bumper?
I've had a G35 loaner since my I35 has been in for service since last Friday. I too noticed that the G gets worse mileage than my I. A lot of it has to do with how it's geared. The 5-speed auto has really close ratios in the first 4 gears, and I notice that at 60 mph, the rpms are spinning at about 2100-2200, where the I at 60 is right at 2000. I know the G has 5 more hp, but it drives like it has 50 more. It's a lot of fun to drive, but I'll be glad to get my I back. Service is just waiting for a part to come in before I get it back. Since I live 1.5 hours away, they let me keep the loaner so I don't have put a lot of miles and waste a whole day twice going back and forth to the dealership.
brought me a 05 g35 coupe yesterday with performance tire and wheels. under that package it included the viscous limited slip differential (vlsd). Went home did some research on the car came across this post on a g35 forum, stating that infiniti made a mistake, that the 05 auto coupe with performance tire and wheel package didn't included the vlsd. I was shock so i went to the official infiniti website to check it out and it was right they took the vlsd off of there package.
i was one unhappy mofo. called the dealer the next day and ask them if they heard anything about it. got a call back and they told me everything was fine, i ask them if they could call infiniti to check up on this cause its one serious problem that need to be fix, they told me there was no need to call them everything label on the sticker was on the car.
for all you 05 g35 coupe owner out there this is one serious issue that need to be check on. there aint no sense buying something that isnt there.
This reminds me of a similar issue with the BMW Z8, a very limited, high-end roadster built from 1999-2003 (if memory serves). It included a lot of the E39 M5's drivetrain, including the motor and 6-speed transmission, and the marketing folks copied over the M5's LSD onto the Z8's window sticker as well. Turns out the Z8 never had the LSD, and the owners--far more mobilized, wealthy, and listened-to than G35 owners will ever be--put up quite a fuss in the past year, with BMW eventually, sheepishly, offering either free or heavily-subsidized "M" driver's school program at their private course in SC.
From what I remember about the 03 G35 (which mine is), only the 6-speed got the LSD, but I could be wrong, and/or they may have changed it by now. You probably have good cause to receive some compensation back or be offered a refund on the car, but I don't think it's worth stressing over too much. If a 400-hp supercar can make do without one, the G can probably manage as well.
I just went in to have my radio installed for a 2nd time and mentioned "by the way" to check my brakes. They did and went right ahead to replace the pads and skim the rotors. They told me that its covered for the first 36K miles... Wierd but in short - two things seem to be wrong with the car - short lived front brakes and faulty radio units. Great for a care prices at $32000.
Has anyone besides myself have to return their g35 sedan twice to have radio units replaced? I've been told that CDW discs can mess up the unit... But I haven't used writeable! Twice time was wasted and at this point, Nissan Motor Corp is getting a threat letter...
I had the same problem. The dealer, who apparently was not aware of it, apologized and offered the sports wheels free of charge. Even their promotional information on the G 35 coupe was misleading.
By the way the paint of the car has some defect (a discoloration on both sides), and it seems that it is due to the fact that the car did not stay long enough in the owen... The car is at the dealer shop and they will fix the problem (how??? I think that they should repaint the whole car). Anyway the quality control at Infiniti sucks!
By the way I find the brakes less efficient than on my 2003 sedan and the engine less impressive, and I wonder where the extra 20 Horses went...In the exhaust? or does it come from the gear box?
Otherwise a beautifull, trouble free car (3700 miles)... so far!
I just got my RWD G35 sedan a week ago. It has the sport pkg. which has the limited slip differential. It has about 200 miles on it. While in stop and go traffic, I noticed my SLIP light flash intermittently (at 15-25mph stop&go traffic). The funny thing is that this does not happen all of the time and I'm afrain that if I took it into the dealer, that they will say that they couldn't duplicate the problem. I don't feel anything different on the car when this happens. From my past experience with the slip differential, the light normally comes on when infact the tire are slippping during acceleration. In my case, in happens during stop and go traffic and I'm not even crancking on the gas. Anyone know or suspect a cause?
Hi everybody. I've had my 2004 G35X for just about two months and I really like it. However, I'm not completely sold on this transmission and I'm starting to wonder if I have an issue. I have been disappointed in the response time after I press the gas pedal. It takes a very noticeable second to actually accelerate, as if it is trying to figure out which gear to go to, sometimes revving to 5000-6000 rpms and "getting ready" to accelerate before deciding on a lower gear. When I switch to tiptronic mode and I am in control - it is obviously not an issue, but I ceretainly don't want to drive in Tiptronic all the time! Passing trucks on the highway for example, I will give it some good gas and it just seems to hesitate, wondering if I am going to stay on the gas or not. If I do let go of the gas before I actually accelerate, it revs up to 5000 or so without any acceleration at all and then finds itself again. I guess it's hard to explain but maybe some of you had the same feeling when your G35 was new? Maybe I'm just getting used to the new car, but I expected a much more responsive accelerator. Thanks for any feedback. :-) tg
I had ordered a G35 coupe last Fall with the performance tire and wheels and specified I did so to get the limited slip dif...when my car finally arrived the dealer would not release it to me....all with this option were put on hold by Infinity until they could change the window sticker and reduce the price accordingly to reflect the delete of the lsd. This was the last week of December 04. I refused delivery of the car and ordered one with the performance suspension package in order to get the lsd. Your dealer must have know about the lsd delete because Infinity was adamant about not letting anyone have a car that was misrepresented on the window sticker. So, the brochure is not correct...but the window sticker should be. Hope this helps. Last year lsd was a dealer installed option for some 900 dollars.
gil20, I am not sure if this helps but few years back I bought a brand new Altima(1994). When I testdrove the car the transmission seems pretty responsive so I decided to make a purchase of the car that is in the showroom with the options I wanted. It turned out the showroom car had the same exact problem like yours. After a year or two, I took it in for a schedule maintainacne at the dealership, the mechanic discover the problem and replaced a new tranny under warranty. Initially I wasn't sure if there is even a problem, kind of skeptical like you. After the replacement, the car drives very well.
My current 05 G35 sedan RWD is very responsive with the transmission so I most likely think there is a problem with your G35X. Sounds like your problem is very clear and they should have no problem fixing it. Please keep us posted.
For the future, make sure we all test drive the cars we buy thoroughly. The hassle of bringing a car back to the dealer for major repair really ruins the joy of buying a new(expensive) car.
A lot of electronic transmissions seem to hesitate before downshifting. My wife's Highlander does the same thing as does a friends ES330 (same engine/tranny combo.)
I've just bought an 05 G35 Sedan with AT and been noticing that the transmission does not engage in torque converter lock-up mode when in manual shift mode. Ie. in auto mode, the RPM reads ~2100 at 60 MPH (top gear) and the transmission is in lock-up mode. I confirm this because the RPM doesn't change when I quickly release the accelerator. Now if I shift to the right for manual mode, then push forward to shift to 5th gear, the RPM will settle down around ~2300 and never locks up to show ~2100 RPM. Another way to check this is to quickly release the accelerator in manual mode (5th gear), and you will see the RPM needle drops quickly too. This is because the engine and transmission are not locked up. Can someone please check this and post your observations. This might not be a problem, but rather just a design to make the car more powerful/responsive in manual shift mode.
Love the discussions. OK - 2004 G35x. I am trying to use the AUTO function for the air but every time I do, the A/C automatically goes on. It's 16 degrees here and the A/C automatically goes on. I have to manually turn it off but I hate the fact that it clicks on when I just want the heat to come on when good and ready. If I search MODE for the direction of the air (head, legs, defrost) it will also keep automatically going on. I'm just sticking with the MANUAL option because it's frustrating to not be in control. Help?
I think it's the default behavior because it helps dehumidify the cabin (to prevent fogging of windshields and windows). I know it seems silly to do in winter, but we got a bunch of snow yesterday and, sure enough, every time I turned it off for a while, the windows started fogging up.
after couple days of callin them and telling them how mad i was. they offer me the sport package free of charge but going to cost me an extra 212 mile on the car. today i just picked up my new g but was very very disappointed. they fix the vlsd problem by giving me the sport package, my old g35 had the protection package and wheels lock which i pay for wasnt on the new g. after inspecting the car and found that it was missing the protection package i went lookin for the salesman to tell him the problem, after tellin him, he walked away lookin for the sales manager shaking his head and with a additude, thats just made me even more piss off. talked to the sale manager and he lie to me tellin me that he told me last night that the car didn't have an protection package. the only thing he told me was there isn't going to be anything extra on the car like aero package or spoiler. i walked away in anger. can i get your opinion on this matter, this is giving me a headache. im not lookin to make money on this issue, all i want is what was on the car sticker when i first brought the car.
i am very disappointed on how infiniti of nashville run and conduct there business. the dealer and infiniti is going to hear from this very very unsatisfy customer.....
I believe that the A/C light being on only means that the compressor is READY to run if needed.
I don't think it's really running in most cases in the winter. Actually the compressors function is just to remove moisture from the air which makes it feels colder than moist air. Thi sis why it's on in the winter to keep windows and interior from fogging up.
I just put mine in auto, set the temp I want and forget about it. I do occasionally change the vent direction with the mode switch but normally I just set it and just forget it.

P.S. I had a a 2004 G35X as a loaner last week for 3 days and did not notice the problem you described. Do all G35X come with factory installed tint?
Tomorrow, I am going to another dealer and tell them I had a 3rd party put the tint on and ask them why this is occuring. - Perhaps they may give me insight (not knowing that a dealership provided the tint).
Btw, I may be putting a lil lucite "visor" extention over the gauge window and clock to see if it cuts the tiny bit of reflection on the front window. For me, its very very little and onl noticable if I look up to the top 25% of the glass. - I'll let you know how it goes.
Cheers!

Sorry for the ramble -- I'm interested to hear what others say.
i was one unhappy mofo. called the dealer the next day and ask them if they heard anything about it. got a call back and they told me everything was fine, i ask them if they could call infiniti to check up on this cause its one serious problem that need to be fix, they told me there was no need to call them everything label on the sticker was on the car.
for all you 05 g35 coupe owner out there this is one serious issue that need to be check on. there aint no sense buying something that isnt there.
Otherwise a beautifull, trouble free car (3700 miles)... so far!
I am not sure if this helps but few years back I bought a brand new Altima(1994).

Can someone please check this and post your observations. This might not be a problem, but rather just a design to make the car more powerful/responsive in manual shift mode.
after inspecting the car and found that it was missing the protection package i went lookin for the salesman to tell him the problem, after tellin him, he walked away lookin for the sales manager shaking his head and with a additude, thats just made me even more piss off. talked to the sale manager and he lie to me tellin me that he told me last night that the car didn't have an protection package. the only thing he told me was there isn't going to be anything extra on the car like aero package or spoiler. i walked away in anger.
can i get your opinion on this matter, this is giving me a headache. im not lookin to make money on this issue, all i want is what was on the car sticker when i first brought the car.
i am very disappointed on how infiniti of nashville run and conduct there business. the dealer and infiniti is going to hear from this very very unsatisfy customer.....
