From the research that I did recently for my purchase you are conceding 5% in profit to the dealer which is exactly what they are looking for. Depending on demand in your area I would think that you could do better than this, IMHO you are very close, as 4% profit would amount to around 41.2. Are you looking for any add ons? I would only agree to this if they would add at least $500 (MSRP) in some kind of add-ons, check the web site, you may find some items that you would like to add.
Also, I would mention to them that they have you at their profit goal, this would tell them that you did your homework.
This package includes All-Season Floor Mats and a matching Cargo Tray to protect the carpet of both the passenger and cargo areas of the cabin. Wheel locks are also included.
$355 MSRP
Protection package 2 includes:
This package includes All-Season Floor Mats and a heavy-duty carpeted Cargo Mat to protect the carpet of both the passenger and cargo areas of the cabin. Wheel locks are also included.
$320 MSRP
This is from the ACURA web site, I didn't see any for $450 MSRP, do you know what they said it included?
I'm in Chicago-land area. Send an e-mail via Edmunds to 8 or so Acura dealers - three quotes are just at $500 over invoice including $670 destination (one from Milwaukee area and the others from Chicago area). My area dealer in Libertyville (IL) or in Milwaukee (WI) will sell MDX with the premium (i.e. base Package) at $37,436 (includes the $670 destination). Tech package is also sold at $40,604 (includes destination). I must say that these were just after I only spend 5 minutes e-mailing. I assume I can go lower easily by $150 to 200 (as another dealer in IL called me [as opposed to e-mailing] and will beat the others by $150 or 5% of difference). So in a nut shell for those of you out there, DO NOT PAY anything more than $500 over invoice. I used a similar strategy 2 yrs ago to buy my Infiniti FX at $300 over invoice. MDX will be the wife’s car.
P.S. I liked the MDX very much as it has a supremely comfortable ride and top crash scores better than almost anything out there including NOW updated IIHS rear crash (which earned top marks). But it does not have the reflexes (i.e., steering) or the rapid pick up of my FX. I also think Acura can learn a few exterior design lessons from other luxury cars, making their exteriors Stunning as opposed to just plane polarizing. Despite my minor complaints, it is among the best crossovers out there.
I don't see any standard protection packages listed on the Acura web site for the MDX 2007. Can you please post a URL?
They said they'd include all weather floor mats, a cargo try and wheel locks. The total MSRP of just these 3 is less than what they quoted so I am going to find out what all they added.
I am happy with the price, regardless. Am also eager to know what others have paid, especially if they got it for lower
I went to www.acura.com. Then selected the MDX vehicle and looked under the accessories category. The front page does say "2007 MDX Accessories".
In any case, I know what you mean by adding these packages. I just got a quote for a 2007 MDX w/tech. $41003+TTL and it included auto dimming rear view mirror (not sure I really need it) plus some type of protection package. The dealer said it was a $700+ value and he was giving it to me for $615.
I am interested in the 2007 MDX. I didn't go through the internet, I really don't want 4 dealers calling me every day. I got what I think is a good quote in the Washington DC area, please let me know what you think.
MDX Sport with body side molding and roof rack (no crossbars) for $42,500. The dealer is adding $299 processing charge, not sure what that is?
Good for you that you had a good experience with them.
I don't trust Acura of Seattle and won't do business with them.
See my previous postings about how how they operate, especially the managers. No professionalism whatsoever. Worst than below average used car dealers.
I guess it's just different luck with different buyer ...
For future buyers - just beware .. don't let Acura of Seattle treat you like they treated me ..
thanks for the advice Churtle. I will negotiate and see how much they come down. The problem is - they are willing to match the price of competitors in the area but sadly they quoted the lowest.
On the web, I found this company Auto-flex, specializing in leasing but also does Auto-Sales. After some talking with a consultant there, I gave him an offer of Invoice - holdback + options on a Tech/Ent package, rounding it up, after adding TTL. He asked me where I got my prices, and I said "edmunds.com for invoice, acura.com for the options". He says he will research with his fleet managers, and come up with my number or better. Sounds too good to be true.
Does anybody have an experience with this kind of sales people? Thanks, - MS.
Lower volume dealers inherently need to make more profit per car sold. I suspect most of the really hot deals are being gotten at the highest volume dealers who might need to move a hundred cars or more a month to "bonus" with the manufacturer.
We ended up getting a new dark cherry pearl Sport/Ent for $43.5 including destination(roughly $500 under invoice) plus 10% off accessories installed. We ended up buying the sport running steps, fender garnish, and day/night mirror. With those installed the total was $44.9K. We also were not forced to buy any protection packages or warranties. We bought from a dealer in the Mid-Atlantic region.
I would recommend going to the dealer in your area who has the most inventory. Also from what I saw, Nimbus Gray looked like the most common color in Sport/Ent trim. The dealer we dealt with started with the "we don't go lower than $500 over invoice" speech and " we never go below 6% off accessories and never discount installation" speech. I said "that's awesome, here is my offer. $43.5 with 30% off accessories installed." They countered with $43,996 (invoice) and 10% off. I said no $43.5 and 30% off. They countered at $43.5 and 10% off accessories. At this point we were $320 apart. My wife hates negotiating and wanted the car so we agreed. I think 15%-20% off accessories could have been had if we negotiated longer. In the end they still made money. Talking to different salesman left me with the impression that it's a buyers market and you should not have to pay over invoice for an MDX.
Wonderful story, malyel! Thanks for sharing. Let us know how you are enjoying the new MDX. I will take your lesson and apply it when I go in for "negotiating". Best wishes, - MS.
invoice - holdback in TX might not work. Too low for them to make any profit.
Yes, I had a feeling it may not work, just gave it a shot. The auto-flex guy got back, with "Those cars are selling like hot cakes, and the best I came up with is $2.5K below MSRP". I rejected it. Then, we were chatting for a bit on what I want in the vehicle - and he suggests "I suggest a Volvo XC-90. I can get you one for $8000 under invoice, but you have to buy the car through us for that kind of deal".
Should I be wary about these people, or is there some incentive going on like that? Not to bother this thread too much, I will go read the Volvo thread for a while. Best regards, - MS.
Car Sales in Louisville drop in May because of the Derby. It appeared to me and a friend of mine at work (who is shopping for an Acura TL) that they need to make some sales this month. Just a little note to those who might be willing to travel to Louisville.
Wow...that sounds like a great deal overall. My wife and I are looking at getting an '07 and just got back from the dealer with their final offer...which we are very much considering. What does everyone think on the following numbers?
Model: Tech/Ent Packages Color: Nimbus w/Taupe Accessories Intalled: Roof Rails, Cross Bars, Running Boards, Side Body Molding, Cargo Tray, All Season Mats, and Wheel Locks
Cost: $41425 Invoice + $670 Destination $153.81 Dealer Profit (Don't ask me how we came to this number!) $2000 For Accessories (15.6% off accessories) Total Cost = $44248.81
After Tax, Title, Tags, Processing Fee, OTD cost is exactly $46K. What do you think? Thanks.
There is a spread sheet that I use that better breaks down dealer pricing. I find it very helpful in my negotiations in the past. With the deal they offered you the factory holdback on that MDX paid to the dealer after the vehicle sells is roughly $927 and the dealer profit at the price you have quoted is roughly $1093 or 2.7%. The dealer is also making a good amount of money on the accessories.
In my opinion, They should be able to come down at least $600 more. That would give them $500 profit plus whatever they make on the accessories which I am guessing is another $600-$800.
With $4 a gallon gas looming, slow summer months ahead and the release of 08's they want to sell the vehicle at that price.
Can you tell me which dealer you have your offer from? I am looking for 2007 MDX Sport with Roof rack and sport running boards. I am in the Phila Suburbs area.
I don't think I can provide links here but if you Google "car buying spreadsheet" it was the first result. It's a great site and you want to use the Buyer's Offer Spreadsheet. I have been told Acura as a line, has a 2% holdback.
The 2.7% was not the holdback but the profit on the deal in addition to the holdback.
The only thing I would add about the spread sheet is it recommends a 3%-5% profit. I think that's way too high if you are buying a good amount of accessories. 3% is fair if the vehicle is stock with no add ons.
With my MDX the profit on the car was 1.12% but the dealership made money on the accessories. The more accessories you buy the lower the price the car should be.
It's funny you mentioned the spreadsheet because I used the same one. I went into the dealership armed with a $45673 OTD offer, and after negotiating back and forth, they offered $46000 (see breakout above). The spreadsheet becomes extremely powerful when a car has been out a while and holdback can be put into the negotiations. I agree that with the summer months, gas rising, etc, they will want to sell this car. As that spreadsheet indicates, 3-5% is reasonable profit over dealer cost. I think the 46K comes in just over 5%, so all in all, I'm pretty happy. I will probably come back with my own final offer a few hundred less and see what happens. Cheers!
I don't think your deal is bad. I would just approach negotiating as the dealer needs to sell the MDX for as close to the "real" cost in order for you to buy the accessories where the real profit it. Don't forget to point out the dealership's service department is also making money on the installation of those accessories. I also would threaten to wait till the last day of the month and go into whoever is the main rival with the $45.6k deal. The salesman who helped me let it slip that the dealership had several salesman quit because of the lack of business. So that proves it's a slow month and if a dealer has a poor turnout this Memorial day weekend they would probably be willing to push a car out on the last day of the month. I doubt they would let you walk over $325. You might also look on the dealership lot and see if there are any colors or trim packages that have been there longer. In the Mid-Atlantic states the dealer must have state inspection when the cars get on the lots. After 3 months a vehicle on the lot is costing them money. I also don't recommend negotiating with your salesman. You want to talk to the sales manager. The salesman is there to show you the car and go on the test drive. He works for you, if you don't buy he doesn't get paid. The last thing to be careful of is the warranty. The dealership where I bought mine wanted the 8yr/120k no deductible warranty for over a thousand dollars more than it can be had online. Good luck!
There is no apparent way to send you a PM. I will tell you this - start your negotiation on the phone. Don't waste too much time with the first person that you talk to. Save your breath for the Sales Manager. And negotiation on what's on their lot.
I just wanted to let you all know the deal I just got in NJ.
2007 MDX Tech package. paid $40,104 (which is supposed to be invoice) gave $1750 which is inceptions (no money down) 18k miles per year on 42 month lease $652 / month the money factor was .00255 Residual was 47.6% Was given deal with tier 1 credit.
I think it is a pretty good deal. Most dealers were quoting at $500 over invoice.
My advice to all is to go on to edmunds and request quotes from dealers via the internet. The internet managers know that they have to come out of the box low because you are likely getting multiple quotes. My worst quote was $600 over invoice. You still need to know your stuff because when you get to the dealer they try to pull some nonsense, but if you stick to your guns you will prevail. The internet manager told me that he does his deals at invoice because its all about volume bonuses for him rather than margin.
WOW Malyel - Congrats on ur purchase - thats a great deal you got. I'm also looking for the MDX with sports and entertainment package - I've got quotes from 15 dealers in the tristate area - and the lowest anyone has quoted is $45095
So ur deal of 43.5K is absolutely wonderful.
Did anyone else in the tristate area - got a better deal for the sports+entertainment package.
Here is a good way to tell. Dealer Cost for the car = Invoice Price - Dealer Incentives ($0 at this time) - Holdback (2% of MSRP). Currently, the Sport Invoice is $41334, and 2% Holdback (off $45595 MSRP) is $911.90. Therefore, dealer cost is around $40422.10. A dealer should expect to make 3-5% profit (closer to 5% for the MDX because it's new), so roughly $2021 profit, making the total cost (w/o) accessories around $42443.21. The MSRP for the accessories you are getting comes to around $500 (give or take), so in the offer you received, they are giving them to you for around $6.79. I think it is a pretty good deal. Now if you want to push for the 3% profit area, they will probably make you pay more for accessories. If there is room for negotiating, I think you are within $300 bux of the lowest you can get. Good job!
I negotiated on MDX w/Tech for $40,104 with the destination $670 included in the Price. SO basically I'm getting it at invoice price. The only options Im picking up at cost are the Roof rails and Protection Package. Tax and tags are extra
In my opinion, giving the dealership a 5% profit on an MDX on top of the profit they are making on accessories is crazy.
I would say 2%-3% profit if the car has no accessories. 1%-2% if you are buying anything over $500 worth of accessories. The profit made in the sale of accessories should go towards making up for the smaller percentage.
I assume the $42,500 incl. destination. If so, I think this is a great deal. I am looking to get MDX Sport w/roof rails and sport running boards. I am willing to buy if I can get it for $43,000 incl. destination. I am in PA.
Can you tell me which dealer you are getting you good quote from?
I have a dealer quote for a base model (no access) MDX at $600 above invoice here in Central PA. That doesn't seem too unreasonable to me (tell me if I'm wrong) except that the dealer I think is trying to make a $$$$ on my trade -- a 2002 Toyota Higlander V6 AWD at 95K miles. Edmunds says trade-in is $13,000; dealer retail $15,500. I'm getting the line from the dealer that "we don't specialize in that car," so all they are willing to give me is what the car would go for at a local wholesale auto auction (which they represent is about $11,000). I got another quote from another dealer on just the trade-in at $11,500. Am I way off in insisting on the Edmunds value? Esp. given the $600 over invoice price on the MDX? Do I go back in and stick to my guns on the Edmunds value on the trade-in and throw out the dealer holdback? Suggestions? Thanks all. :confuse:
I was checking a dealer's inventory, and found exactly the color combo I wanted. However, the odometer reads 125 miles. I tried a few other vehicles (of different colors), and all of them had 11 to 14 miles on them. Any idea why a new MDX might have 125 miles on it? Should I just wait and get some other vehicle?
Sorry if this subject has been discussed before. If so, a pointer will be enough. Thanks for the insights, - MS.
I am guessing they probably made a trade with another regional dealer. Financially it's cheaper to drive the car to the other dealership rather than transport it.
When I visited dealers, I told some I preferred Black/Bordeaux. They looked in their computer and said they could get one in a few days but didn't have it on their lot. A trade would be the most logical explanation of how they could get it that quickly.
When you look at the dealer's used inventory, is it all pre-owned Acura's or similar higher end makes? My guess if it is, then that dealer has no intention of keeping your trade in its inventory to resell. They will not give you more than they could get at auction, which is ALWAYS south of Edmund's TMV, KB, or NADA values. The fact you have higher than average mileage doesn't help either. Auction prices are the real "wholesale" values, not what Edmunds/KB/NADA trade-in values are. I would also dare say that Edmunds TMV for the MDX is a bit higher than $600 over invoice. Since you were successful in reducing the price off the top, the dealer will do the same off the bottom.
It's not a screamin deal, but it does seem fair to me. I don't think you're going to do much better anywhere else.
I was told my the sales guy I'm working with in No VA and the F & I manager there wouldn't be any financing incentives on the MDX for a while (with the exception of lease specials) since it's selling well.
This sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I've been shopping for the same model and the lowest price I got over the phone was $40,400. What state did you purchase this in? I'm shopping in southern CA.
Hi, I am been negotiating prices over phone/email for tech/ent. Currently the best offer is invoice or maybe 150 under, which is 41950 to 42100 in DC area. I have a 01 Camry with low miles that was appraised by Carmax to be 8000. KBB is 6700 for some reason, Edmunds is 7800, and NADA is 9000 estimate.
Should I try to sell my car before I buy the MDX or see if dealers are willing to match Carmax?
Also, I'm annoyed by dealers who say selling at invoice is the same as them "not making a profit." What a load of bs.

Excuse my ignorance, but how did u arrive at the figure of 5% profit for the dealer.
When I negotiate with the dealer on that point, it would help if I have more knowledge.
Thanks a lot

I would say 2%-3% profit if the car has no accessories. 1%-2% if you are buying anything over $500 worth of accessories. The profit made in the sale of accessories should go towards making up for the smaller percentage.
