You pay sales tax in the state you register your vehicle. The dealer provides a temporary drive out tag which is normally good for 30 days. You would then bring your sales documents to your home states motor vehicle department and apply for tags. This would be the point when you pay sales tax.

    Hi Richard,
I’m glad you ordered the Pilot at 1K over invoice. As long term customer of Friendly Honda, I really felt betrayed by the sales person. However, after a short phone call with the salesperson, he is giving me the same deal as you, 1k over invoice no question asked. As I’m still waiting for my order to arrive, the sales person Dan told me he will still match the best price. I'm extretmly happy with his service and honesty. Thanks for your posted. Good luck and good Piloting.

I have heard the pricing is going down on the Pilot, but I haven't heard about leasing specifics. Could all of you happy new Pilot owners post what kind of lease deals you've received? Please include the following, if possible:
    Negotiated sales price
Lease term (36 or 48 mo.)
    Mileage (12k or 15k)
    Money Factor
    State and/or Dealership

    Thanks!!!

I'm looking for a new EX-L Pilot without any of the dealer add-ons. Does anyone know of any deals in the Philadelphia area below MSRP? I would appreciate any help anyone could give.

anybody getting below MSRP in SoCal, NV, AZ, etc? (Pilot LX) If so, where? Or do I need to wait for the Murano to come out? Thanks.

I am hunting for a Pilot EX-L with DVD in the Tri-state area (NT, NJ, CT) for a reasonable dealer. Most guys are quoting MSRP+. I would appreciate if anyone could share their experiences and possibly prices. I am ready to buy, but not going to rush into it.
    Thanks.

Saw an EX-DVD offer discounted a bit, not enough to make it worth the trip, in NorCal.

Carbuyer: Did you try Autonation.com? The are asking about $500 under MSRP but you need to give them your email in order to recieve an online (but real-time quote). Best of Luck!

I went through my AAA club's buying program and received three quotes from area dealers (Rochester, Buffalo) for $500 under MSRP.

Car was built three days ago and is on its way.

Anyone purchase a Pilot in metro DC? If so, what trim did you get, from which dealer, what sort of deal, and did you purchase any dealer add-on accessories? Thanks.
  • grumpygradygrumpygrady Member Posts: 2
Just ordered Pilot EX-L from Brown's Honda in Glen Burnie. $500 UNDER MSRP and NO dealer add ons!!! Salesman was Kevin Wouters, easy to deal with, great dealership, easy deal!

Sheehy Honda in Alexandria is offering $500 under MSRP and no add ons. Good luck.

Did you all take delivery right away? I went to Criswell Honda in Germantown and they told me they were selling for MSRP and I would have to place a deposit on the order. They literally had two in the lot - the demos. Of course, they told me this is standard - but, obviously you all are getting a different Pilot experience.

Leaning heavily toward Pilot. Husband wants the Durango though. Saw an R/T fully loaded for $30K...but, not familiar with Dodge. And, it just kills me to finance something for 5 years and not get a least what you owe on it at trade-in...my experience with domestics.
  • grumpygradygrumpygrady Member Posts: 2
Brown's had 1 Pilot it used for 'Demo' and anywhere from 1 to 3 on the lot for sale on my other visits. I shopped this and researched this hard. For me, the Pilot was by far the best choice; as I am looking for long term reliability. I could have driven one of the others off the lot at $500 off MSRP, but they had options I didn't want to pay for. Thus, I put down a $500 refundable deposit and expect to take delivery on the vehicle I want with the options I want around 12/10. Good luck!

Paid MSRP for white EXL, purchased off the lot. However, we got the towing package for $540, which is about $700 off the list price. No hidden costs. Drove it home on a rainy night and it seems very sure-footed and secure. Really nice car.
  • pwitzpwitz Member Posts: 51
What dealer gave you the best deal in WNY?
I'm in Rochester...I haven't shopped Pilots lately, but Ontario seemed the nicest and most fair.
  • jmfreshourjmfreshour Member Posts: 57
Thanks to all who responsed to my query. It appears that $500 under is the going rate for this area. Of course, the dealers make part of that back with the infamous "processing fee". I wonder if I could negotiate $500 under including the processing fee. Sheehy Alexandria has the exact model we want arriving next Friday. Going to talk to the GSM this weekend. Cheers, JMF

Like your sign-on handle..LOL. Looks like it might be the Pilot for me. Been doing the research on it. Test drove it twice. I was wondering - anyone hear what may be changed for the 2004 Pilot?

I find lifting the back very difficult - have some neck/shoulder problems. I heard that Honda may be considering a split back for 2004...could just be rumor.

Greetings All! I've been in the hunt for a new vehicle, and since headroom is at the top of my list, I've decided on the Pilot EX-L. After reading and rereading the messages here, I developed what I think is a "fair" price. So now I'm looking for some feedback from all of you. I sent out emails to dealers in GA, MI, CO and CA with the following specs: Pilot EX-L, fog lights, trailer hitch w/towing pkg, rear splash guards, roof rail crossbar set, auto day/night mirror and 7yr 100k mile zero deductible Honda warranty. The best price I got was $32,170 plus tax and tag. What do you all think of that? I'm looking for objective, informed feedback.....Thanks

Friendly Honda in Michigan 586 412-9600 is running a November Special for $1,500 over Edmund's invoice price. (Last month was 1K over) I've shopped in the tri-states area and so far they have the best price. The sales manager's name is Dan Geiersbach. Just mention you have read my post and there will be no negation needed. My Silver EX-L with Nav. should be here in a few weeks. If do order from Dan would you please let me know after you place your order? I'm hoping to get some referral incentive him. Good luck and good Piloting.

Don at Friendly Honda is the MI dealer that sent me a quote. The basic Pilot EX-L is $29,416, which is invoice plus $1500 and includes the $460 destination charge. The accessories that I mentioned makeup the remainder of the price I listed in my previous post of $32,087 (corrected price). I have an offer from a So. Cal. dealer for $32,170 for the same package. I think it's a pretty good price, but wondered what my fellow Pilot seekers thought. So for $2754 Don is offering: fog lights, trailer hitch w/towing pkg, auto day/night mirror, rear splash guards, roof rail crossbar set, all-season floor mats, and a 7 yr 100k zero deductible honda warranty. I really like the invoice plus $1500, but what do you think of the accessories pricing?

We've been shopping for EX-L's here in Orange County and surrounding counties. Haven't found anyone under MSRP, but most will gladly sell for MSRP. One dealer offers MSRP plus free lifetime oil changes. Anyone finding anything below MSRP in LA, Orange, Riverside, or SD Counties?
  • jayrealejayreale Member Posts: 4
By the way, forgot to mention, we've put in for quotes with all the online channels, including Priceline.com. Priceline emailed and admitted that they couldn't get us a price under MSRP.

Our Pilot will be deliver to us within next 2 to 3weeks and my silver EX-L with Navigation System does not have any Dealer Add on. I checked out the fog light and it wasn’t too appealing with the black plastic bracket, however, I’m still considering the back-up video or a back-up sensor if he cut me a deal. The reason I like Honda’s navigation system was because it has a Wandering Sensing Device it’s a warning system that uses gyro sensors in case you doze off behind the wheel. I think it is an added safety when you take long trips. Furthermore, some one told me I can add a DVD player or watch VCP if you modify the back-up cam. Friendly’s dealer add on is not the cheapest, since I’m not going to do any towing, I did not investigate into the price of towing package. Other items like running board etc. I’m going to shopping around on the net, lots of time you can New Honda genuine parts for 50% off and the dealer can install for only the labor price. The 7 yr 100k zero deductible Honda warranty I’m pretty sure the dealer will give you a break (I did not purchase any warranty due to my last Honda ran for 180,000 miles with almost no dealer service), just don’t forget to negotiate before delivery. And if you don’t mind, could you let me know how much did/will you getting the warranty for? Thanks in advance.
    Good luck!

Do you live in the MI area or did you work remotely to get the Pilot and have it shipped to you? I'm in the PacNW and am not interested in paying the $3-4K mark up dealers want out here. I've got a call and an email into Friendly Honda, but wanted to check if you had more info.

    thanks.
  • boulie145boulie145 Member Posts: 6
MAJ1....Thanks for the good information. You have given me cause to reevaluate buying the warranty now. I've been looking at www.HandA-accessories.com to get prices on the various accessories, because they are much less expensive than the dealer prices. Have you bought genuine Honda parts in the past and taken then to the Honda dealer to get them installed? Did the labor they charge match up with what you expected? Any dealer ever say no to doing the installation? I'm trying to base my decisions on the labor charges I can derive from www.hondacars.com site. After you "build a Pilot", the Summary lists two prices for each accessory, and I'm assuming that the difference between the two is the labor charge. The price we agreed to for the warranty is $945...the same as the price at www.hondawarranty.com ($1020 minus the $75 promotion discount).

NBALEX....I've done all my work over the internet. If I buy from Friendly Honda in MI, I'll have to go there to pickup the Pilot, but given how cheap airfares are, I'll still save money. And I can have a relaxing drive back getting to know my new car. I've currently got internet messages out to all the dealers near me, to see if anyone wants to play ball. I'll let you know the outcome in a future post.

nbalex - I negotiated Thomason Honda in Gladstone (Portland area) down to MSRP on an EX-L. They had 6 various ones in stock two weeks ago. The deal killer for me was I was trying to trade in my CR-V and they just wouldn't come up to my number. They told me to come back without the CR-V and I could have any of them at MSRP.

Also, St. John's Honda in Portland sells them right at MSRP without having to negotiate - but their waiting list is out to Jan or Feb.

I live about 10 minutes from Friendly Honda (that’s why my families and I had bought 6 cars from them in the passed), however, if I'm not mistaking the flat bed delivery service shouldn’t be too expensive. Friend of my bought a car (used from Ebay) from Texas not too long ago and the delivery charge to a Detroit drop ship dealer was $450 plus $80 insurance. I don’t know if Friendly have such service, but I do recall Dan told me they ship the car “very cheap??” to other states. If you do order from Friendly would you please let me know after you place your order? I'm hoping to get some referral incentive him. Good luck and good Piloting.

If I can get the 7 years warranty for less then $800, I’ll seriously consider buying it, after all it is the first year model. I’m not sure they would budge on the warranty pricing. I’ll try to negotiate the best deal and post it on Edmund after I get it. Good luck and good Piloting.

The wife and I signed a deal at $500 under MSRP including processing fees for an Evergreen EX-L to be delivered in late-December. We ordered from Sheehy Honda in Alexandria. We dealt strictly with the Internet sales guys. Easiest car-buying experience we've ever had. Felt like I got a good deal for our market. Could I have done better? Probably, but I'm content with the deal. No haggling, just one offer and my counter-offer. I would highly recommend Shay Phillips and Samir Halim at Sheehy. Looking forward to joining the club in a couple of months. Cheers, JMF

I went through AAA's buying service and got $500 below MSRP quoted by Holtz. I asked & got a local dealer - Lia in Williamsville - to match & they did. They're also on AAA's buying service.

Ray Laks in West Seneca lowballed me on my trade, so I didn't deal with them. Lia gave me KBB.

Well, if you can get there to pickup your Pilot or workout a way to get it delivered, Internet Sales at Friendly Honda of Clinton Township, MI is currently the pricing champion, in my opinion.
I just put down a deposit for a late December arrival with the following deal:
    Pilot EX-L Havasu BLue............29,416.00
    trailer hitch w/tow pkg..............751.00
    auto day/night mirror................313.00
    rearsplash guards......................51.00
    all-season floor mats.................incl.
    Total Price with all equipment...$30,531.00

The best offer I got in So. Cal. was $30,500 with only the auto day/night mirror included.
After visiting the So. Cal. dealer, I think they just lowballed me on the internet price to get my attention. Good luck to everyone else on the Pilot research and purchase.

Jay, how far under MSRP did you bid?
  • reichowjrreichowjr Member Posts: 86
I ordered my EX-L with DVD mid Oct., no dealer add ons for $30,264 from Friendly Honda. I hope to get it by the end of the month. They told me the price and no haggle. Very professional and easy to work with. I highly recommend them.
  • pwitzpwitz Member Posts: 51
Holtz tried to screw me back in July...lowball for my Accord started at 5500 (when it was worth ~9k Edmunds/KBB trade in)..and I quit playing with them when the maxed out at 7k...Ontario offered better, but good to know...
I see Dick Ide here in Rochester has 9 on the lot (including 2 in the showroom)...something tells me they are gouging and going to have a hard time getting their future allocations soon...
Anybody tried CollegeHills Honda in Ohio?
They had a $1000 off coupon for a while on Pilots...maybe a shorter drive than MI!
  • atalalayatalalay Member Posts: 58
Just stumbled into a (rather) new and interesting site that offers a reverse auction (sellers/dealers bid down the prices) for cars: http://www.mycarmyprice.com/search/default.asp It should work well for buyers, at least in theory... And probably worth the nominal charge... in my opinion...

The last Pilot went for about MSRP but it was not sold in a highly populated area (with many dealers). BTW: Odysseys are going under MSRP.

call berlin city in NH or web w.berlincity.com and i called a talked to linda ext 351 and frist off dropped 600 then we talked, she was very helpful. this was on the plain ex pilot. she also got me 4.09 fin., 500 down and they were going to ship over to NY for me to sign, no travel time. and no charge, got to like that..
  • jayrealejayreale Member Posts: 4
I put in for $1,000 under MSRP just to see what would happen, and a guy from Priceline emailed saying it just wasn't going to happen. We've re-submitted at $500 under.
At the moment, I've found three dealers with the vehicle we want, silver EX-L, and they're all quoting MSRP. They all tell me (the other guys will tell you MSRP and then try to add options). They all pit each other against one another...kinda funny. Anyway, Rock Honda in Fontana, where we bought our Odyssey two three years ago is MSRP, has the car on the lot, and gives lifetime free oil changes. Too bad I live 50 miles from the dealership. I called my local dealer only 3 miles away to see if they'd match the free oil changes, and they said no. I just don't want buyer's remorse in finding out someone paid less than me in the SoCal area. I just tell each dealership that I'm shopping for the best price and that I've been quoted MSRP and can they do better, and none of them are budging. Frustrating.

Since the price of the Pilot varies widely depending on where in the US you are, it would be helpful to have your state/city mentioned either in the post or your profile.

    Thanks.

    I'm in Southern California.
  • paulmlacpaulmlac Member Posts: 27
I wanted to chime in from southern Indiana...

Supply and demand here is crazy. Mostly because there's only 2 dealers within a 125 mile radius. There's no Pilots on dealer lots and all those coming in through December are on deposit or sold. Basically, if you buy now, you'll get it in January.

Here's the deal I've been quoted:
    Pilot EX at MSRP
    Trailer package at $869
Trade at about $600 less than book value

I'm on the fence on this. Wife & I like the Pilot. But, I'm in sales (not cars) and it just kills me to buy sticker for a car and get screwed on the trade at the same time.

I'd fly up to Friendly Honda in MI (actually grew up in Detroit) but then I'd be stuck with selling the old car.

Don't know what to do on this. Anybody think prices will drop more in early 2003?
  • sjwsmwsjwsmw Member Posts: 131
Happy to have company outside of California where the demand far outstrips the supply and the annoying game playing goes on.
But also happy to see that their are dealers offering less than MSRP more and more.
  • clpurnellclpurnell Member Posts: 1,083
Why not drive up and trade the car. Don't know if they have carmax in MI but they do in Chicago you could always sell there then fly to detroit and drive back. Where there is a will there's a way.
  • 01r101r1 Member Posts: 280
Just took delivery of a Nighthawk Black Pearl EX-L last night. Paid MSRP, $30980. Dealer says I got it for under MSRP because they over-paid me for my CR-V trade in. I see it the other way, I feel like I paid over MSRP because they shorted me on the trade. I had the CR-V for sale for two months and no takers, so I gave in and traded it. The irony is, as the dealer was showing us all the features of the Pilot, I got a call on my cell from someone really wanting to buy the CR-V... oh well.

There's a little risk in what you laid out (driving to Chicago, selling there, flying to Detroit, buying there, driving home).

Chicago's six + hours away. Say I get there to sell my car. I'll probably get about $38.95 for my car when they realize that I've driven 6 hours and need to go catch a flight.

What I am considering is selling where I live in the paper or a used car lot (probably would get nothing there too but it'd be done), flying to Detroit, buying there, and driving back.
  • jb51jb51 Member Posts: 1
Best offer I found in this south texas local market for an EX-cloth($29.2 MSRP and $470 delivery) was $28.0. That price included delivery as well as the dealer add-on of pinstripe /door moulding/ paint treatment / cloth seat treatment). Also was asked to finance through Honda at 4.9%.

I feel bad for the people that were or are buying 1K to 2K over MSPR, fearing that the Pipot will be eternally hot like the Odyssey. I don't think so, and here is a simple reason why it won't. Odyssey is hot because there are really only 2 or 3 other legitimate minivans out there (Town&Country, Sienna). However, there are probably hundreds of SUV's out there. There must be at least 10 direct competitors to the Pilot (4Runner, Highlander, Trailblazer, Envoy, Explorer, Mountaineer, Grand Cherokee, MDX, BMW, Mercedez, and most with large incentives or 0% financing ... well you get the point).

You must have notice reading these messages that some Pilots are beginning to go at or under MSRP. I am shooting for 500 to 1K under MSRP at the end of November or end of December.

Although I am going to buy the Pilot anyway, I am disappointed with several things: no overdrive button, 3rd row seat is so small (almost useless), lack of exterior color choice, slightly under power for a car it's weight (only 242 torque for a 4400 lbs), and feminine looking.
