The lease expired on my 530i yesterday. I decided to purchase the car.
I inquired a number of times on this board over the past few months about the CPO process and received some very good advice. However, no one posted details of their lease buy-out CPO transaction.
To help others that are thinking about purchasing their leased car, here is the details of my transaction. Basically, BMW is PAYING me OVER $1100 to CPO the car:
- 2002 530i, PP, SP, Xenon, 5-speed, 36,327 miles
- Kelly Blue Book: Retail - $37,895, Wholesale - $29,725
They're doing the mid/tall $25's, low low low $26's at the auctions .... you got a good deal, BMWFS got a good deal, they sold a warranty, you're happy, they're happy, you saved money, they made money -- all is good with the world .................
.... **Just reached verbal agreement to purchase 2001 CPO 525i with 36k miles for 27k when dealer called to inform me that --
>almost the entire car had been re-painted<** ...
=======================
Not knowing the area, specs and the color on this "paint by numbers deal" .... lets say the body is puuuurfect and the owner was just a nut case and had it painted just for the "grins and glory" of it all .. if so, it's a $15,000 vehicle, major paint work Kkkkkkills the value of Bimmers - plus the CPO will not be good if body/frame damage is found ..
Can you spell: PASS .... for $27,0 there is bunches of nice ones out there .............
I really was just trying to find out what was a good deal. I believe that I found a great deal when I purchased my 540i,silver on silver, 6speed vehicle on Tuesday. The car was selling for blue book, but I purchased it for $5400 less. Dealers are trying to move vehicle before January 1st.
... **How easy was it to negotiate with the dealership?** ...
The dealer has nothing to do with it, it's not their vehicle, it's not their title - always deal with the leasing company ...
how did you find out the MMR value? Have you tried: Real-World Trade-In Values .. there's only about 24,000 posts on Real world values rolling around there ..
Congratulations. Thanks for your previous info on tires, CPO, etc.
To update my deal:
Just got off the phone my my dealer placing an order. Decided on turning in the 525 sport with 22K. I would have done exactly what you did if I had the 530 and NAV. Went with a X5 3.0 sport loaded up to $54,475 MSRP. Using what "value" my lease turn in had- got the X5 at $800 over invoice with 0 down, MF .00125/ 61%, no security and refunded security from the 525. Original offer was $1900 over and MF marked up 1/2%. Payment comes to $595/ month pre-tax for 10k/ 36 month.
Dealer even let me put a $1000 order deposit on my Amex card, so that is an unexpected 1000 membership reward points. Now for the kicker- I qualify for the BMW CCA $1000.00 X5 rebate, so technically(not factoring in fees, etc- NY's acq fee is a killer- $900 as of tomorrow) BMW is paying me $200 to lease a brand new car with full warranty and free maintenance. Almost forgot- insurance dropped $180/yr as well. Bottom line- very pleased.
Need a new 4 door car for the new family member who will join us in June 05. Past month I've been looking at used 03 or 04 models. Some dealers have pretty good prices, but I started thinking, if I can get a new 05 model for 1K or so over invoice, I'd go with that.
So here's my question. I'm in the SF bay area, I'm looking to buy a 530 with cash. Being that it's Jan 05, will dealer make good deals? Is it a benefit these day to pay cash? Or are they trying to make a few more bucks in financing or lease? Is it reasonable to get 1K or less over invoice? Edmund's TMV price for BMWs are very high compared to people who posted on this board.
Any recommendation would be great as far as dealers around the bay or realistic expectations on $ over invoice. Most importantly, timing. I have 5-6 month left before I need the car, will it be better to wait until word of the 06 models?
You seem to forget that BMW payed heavy fines and was reported on 60 Minutes for selling cars that were damaged and repainting them to unknowning customers selling them as "brand" new.. Very shady operation.
The dealer has access to the MMR price. It is on their internal computer. The MMR changes weekly as a result of the auction happening every Wednesday. From what I understand, that is the price at which the dealer acquires the car from BMWFS.
I first found out about MMR from Terry on this board (thank you, Terry). Then I found I could get the MMR price from the dealer. But not all dealers will give you this number. The second dealer I went to was up front and honest and showed me the numbers (the first dealer I went to put in his own number for the MMR price, which was about $3K higher than actual). This second dealer said he would sell me the car at MMR. When other dealers started to call me to CPO my car with them, I aked if they too would sell me the car at MMR. Reluctantly they agreed. Then I worked on the CPO pricing. It was easy when you have a number of dealers competing for your business. Ultimately, I went with the upfront and honest dealer mentioned above. It is amazing at the deal one can get if you are educated about the pricing.
... **How easy was it to negotiate with the dealership?** ...
**The dealer has nothing to do with it, it's not their vehicle, it's not their title - always deal with the leasing company ...**
Terry's advice may be right in most cases, but with me, I got a better deal going through the dealer than the leasing company, especially because I wanted to get the extended warranty of the CPO progam which I can only get through a BMW dealer. Buying the warranty separately (now an option) was more costly.
I see that you purchased the extended warranty for about $200 below dealer cost (if the BMW memo is correct). Did you get any idea of the dealer's actual cost for the CPO/extended warranty?
pen101 didn't really "purchase" the extended warranty.. His dealer bought the car from BMWFS and resold it to him as a CPO unit..
They are required to bring the car up to CPO standards of course, but the dealers actual payment to BMWNA for the CPO warranty/designation is about $1000...
Even though it is identical to the CPO warranty (thanks to you, I know that now), when they sell you the extended warranty on a car you already own, then that is a different transaction with different pricing..
Ok....I have a shade under three years and about 49k miles to go until this is going to be an issue for me, but......
If my 530i is relatively problem-free my plan is to purchase at lease end. I have a nice subsidy from my business on a leased car right now, so it's not a bad way to own this sucker long term.
Anyway, what type of things are NOT covered once we hit 50k on these machines? I had a certified Audi A8, and they were very finicky on what was covered. I wouldn't expect wear items like brakes to be included, but electrical stuff wasn't always under their warrant. Almost seemd like I needed to search out my preferred service tech to see if he could "slip it in" under warranty.
So....as a BMW newbie, how is the CPO overall? I know it's probably worthwhile to get (maybe even necessary?), but will I be frustrated with non-coverage?
Terry says the dealer made money on my transaction, but I don't see it. Purchasing the car at MMR (dealer cost) and then the $1800 CPO price leaves little for dealer profit. It costs the dealer $1000 for the CPO certificate, plus the dealer inspects, fixes and details the car and gives you a loaner for a day or two. Of course, if they did not make money on the transaction, they would not have done it. Also, maybe they are counting on you servicing and repairing the car at that dealership in the future. Also, maybe BMW gives the dealer a bonus on the sale.
.. **Terry says the dealer made money on my transaction, but I don't see it** ...
Never said the "dealer" made money .... said: BMWFS made money .. dealer did the paperwork, probably made few hundred, maybe, if any, and will hope to service the vehicle in the future, then make money ......................
I think pen101 was incredibly lucky to find a dealer that would disclose MMR price, and do this deal for a very minimal profit (if any).. I'm happy for him, but wouldn't you consider this a hard thing to pull off for most buyers approaching lease-end on their BMW?
Is there such a thing as MACO? The guy at the dealer is saying...
"MACO is a fee charged to all
Bay Area Region dealers at 1% of the base invoice price of the car."
Is there such a thing? And is the value of 1% correct? I'm getting areally good price over invoice, but this MACO value would be applied. Just want to know if it's valid.
...... Depending on the area of the country and the time of the year, it's a "real deal" charge that every dealer gets billed for .. all those big TV Ad's and the "December to remember" full page newspaper blitz's are charged to the dealers, so it can effect the selling price of the vehicle .....
seloo, you are confusing the stand alone extended warranty purchase with the extended warranty that comes with a CPO. Whereas the warranties may be similar, the difference is in how they are purchased, one being included when the car is certified, and the other, outside the certification process. Dealer cost is different as is the retail price of each method.
When a dealer sells a CPO unit.. he has to bring it up to CPO specs... And BMWNA will attach the warranty for about $1000... The reasoning for the price? BMWNA knows that the car is in tip-top condition, because the dealer has done the work.. So, there should be less warranty claims in the long-term..
The "extended" warranty that original owners can buy? No reconditioning or work required by BMWNA... only that the car be within the original warranty, and be owned or leased by the original owner or lessee... That is one reason the price is higher ($2249 list on a 325i, I think).. the other reason the price is higher? It is an optional item that the buyer can't get anywhere else....
The actual CPO warranty is a tool to help dealers sell used cars, hence its lower cost...
I understand, but the same rules apply to car under its original warranty (it would be in tip-top condition due to the maintenance program and limited warranty. (As in Pen101's case)
If you own the BMW, it may be cheaper to sell the car to the dealer and buy it back CPOed. Let the dealer make a few hundred and still get the extended warranty/CPO (same thing) cheaper that purchasing it separate from the dealer.
That is pretty much what pen101 did... except his was leased..
And, as I posted above, I think he was really lucky to find a dealer willing to sell him the car at the MMR price and maybe only make a few hundred on the deal.. Most dealers would be looking to clear $1000 or more on a transaction like that.
The biggest problem with selling a car that you actually own, and then re-purchasing is sales taxes.. My guess is the best option for someone that already owns his BMW, and wants the extended warranty, is to just pay the $2249 (or whatever discounted price he can get) and be done with it..
If you leased like pen101 did... and can pull off that deal.. then you really did well.. (amazingly well... I congratulate him).
I wouldn't count on any individual's car being up to CPO standards, just because it is in warranty and the maintenance is free... Some people treat their cars like crap, no matter what... So, BMWNA is taking on some added risk, selling the extended warranty to those people.. more so, than selling it to a dealer for a CPO car, that has been brought up to standards..
Plus, if you knew you treated your car like crap, you might be more likely to buy the extended warranty..
The dealer did this CPO deal at this price for a number of reasons: (1) Salesman gets end of year bonus ($200), (2) dealer makes additional sale for the year (3) price competition with other dealers, and (4) probably most important, I did the leg work for the dealer.
I knew that the car needed new tires and brakes to meet the CPO requirements. So I purchased the tires before the CPO process (and way cheaper than what dealer would charge) and also had the brakes and rotors replaced (under the free maintenance program). Plus I had the cup holder fixed and the burned out fog light replaced before the car was CPO'd. The dealer also looked over the car before he would do the CPO deal to make sure that he would not have to put additional work (and money) into the car to bring the car up to CPO specs (no dings, dents, mechanical problems, etc). All the dealer had to do was inspect the car and detail it. That is why I got the CPO price so low. I made it easy for them.
I discussed the deal with the dealer a month earlier, and he basically told me what to do to get the deal. I had 36K on the original tires at that point, so getting new tires was going to happen regardless. The big item was the $1100 brake and rotor replacement I got for free under the maintenance program. He told me to do it before the program expired at the 36K mark to get it at no charge. Done. No-brainer.
New BMW in 3 years? May be a good time to trade in the then 6-year old, 75K 530i for a new one. Or maybe something else. The competition keeps getting better.
Yes. Quoted $1400. The big potential maintenance cost is the above mentioned brakes and rotors. Lasted over 36K miles the first time. Maybe I can go another 40K or more on the new set. I also evaluated my maintenance expense the first 36K and determined I'll take the gamble on the next 36K. By 75K, I will have to pay for 3 oil changes and an Inspection II and maybe a wiper or two.
I'm looking to purchase either an 02 or 03 Automatic 530i. I've seen a private owner (PO) 02 /25K miles for $33K (cold and premium pkgs) and a PO 03 w/6K for 35K. Dealer prices w/CPO are b/w $34K-40K w/530s w/higher miles. Since the POs are w/in 36/36 and w/in the warranty, as long as POs pass muster, are they still better buys than a CPO buy? I'm reading alot about dealers not in the mood to negotiate much on their CPO-covered 530s.
Remember.. asking prices are just that.. asking.. Dealers are a pain, but they are in business to actually sell the cars.. Don't let their attitude put you off bargaining on a CPO car...
That said, a nice low-mileage privately owned car can be a great buy... The market for private sales in $30K+ cars is a tough one.. You can bargain just as hard on those.. An '03 530i with only 6K, if it is well-optioned would be my pick... I'd start them with $31,500 and hope to get home with it for $33K or less..
On the '03, you have warranty and free maintenance for 4yr/50K... '02s have the same 4/50 warranty and 3/36 on the free maintenance..
Living in NL, just got a "Diplomatic Sales" price quote on a reasonably loaded 2006 53iX Wagon (premium pack, Nav, Sunroof, but not sport pack). Drove a 535d and it was incredible; the 530iX should be marvelous. Huge sunroof was great.
Does 55K sound right to people? BMW has not firmed up their prices yet, but this is what BMW HQ gave the Dutch dealer.
I just bought a new 525i (2005) in November. Shopped three places - finally got a dealer to give me $2800 off Sticker on one, so I bought it. Who says BMW doesn't negotiate? Worth every penny I paid
hihomike... Did you trade in a car with this dealer as part of the overall deal? A great deal is the total package: what you paid, what you got in trade, financing rate, etc. Dealers work all the angles. For example, they can give someone a ton "off" sticker put then lowball their trade in; someone else might pay "sticker" but get a great deal on their trade in.
I am in the market to buy a 2005 525 with the following:
Premium Package, Auto, Xenon, and Stero Prep.
The sticker price on this car is $46145 (including destination). Not sure how much I can get this car for (the dealer offered $1000 off).
Has anyone bought a 2005 525 lately? What type of deal did you receive? I am an 1 1/2 hours away from LA and have no problem purchasing this car is LA.
Yes, I did trade a vehicle, but you should know I am a sales manager at an Infiniti Dealership and knew exactly what my car's value was - and they gave me $500 more for the trade than it was worth. So, all in all, it still was a good deal.

BMW Memo stated the Dealer Cost is $1999
Pen101 Dealers CPO Certificate Cost $1000
Based on this information what should someone expect to pay for the Extended Warranty?
$1500? $1800? $2500

New BMW in 3 years? May be a good time to trade in the then 6-year old, 75K 530i for a new one. Or maybe something else. The competition keeps getting better.
Depending on the tax rate, that would be a deal killer.

Any help would be aprreciated!
Thanks
