Pontiac G6

Can anyone direct me to a picture of a base G6 with the standard 16" wheel covers? I see them in the Pontiac brochure but just a wheel picture, not a photo of them on the car. Wish I could get the 16" alloy wheels but can't, the covers don't look bad.

Are you sure you can't swing the wheels?

Looking at G6 options after your first post, I see that depending on what other equipment you get, the wheels might not be as expensive as someone would think.

A convenience package is available for $375. It includes a seat height adjuster/lumbar adjuster, the adjustible pedals, map pockets, floor mats and a cargo net. Add the $500 wheels to make the driver's package and they knock off $350, so it only costs $525. Lots off good stuff and good looks for the money.

Well, the way stuff is supposed to work is you would call dealer to make appointment or just take it to them (however it works at your dealership) and describe the problem you are having. They have all the information needed to locate this bulletin themselves based on the problem you are experiencing.

I just provided you the number in case you wanted to give it to them to make it a little more likely they find it quickly.

I don't think there is anywhere online that has bulletins that recent. Some placed like NHTSA have bullentins but their system lags manufacturers data by several months. Kind of weird in this day and age of instant communication but.....

Yes I'm familiar with the packages and you are right, the wheels are not much more. This is a company car and it's just a matter of how much of my own cash do I want to kick in. For the ABS and basic sunroof I'm already shelling out $1100. I know there is a roof / wheel package for not much more but in my opinion, the alloy wheels are a bit "open" allowing you to see mostly the disc brake. Plus, they are both 16" wheels, it's not like the alloys are a performance upgrade from 15 inchers. I do think I will go with the Granite exterior with Neutral / Taupe interior which gives you some fake walnut trim inside. That should spruce up what I thought was a dark interior.

Excellent, you are on top of the situation. I admire someone willing to spend their own money to improve their company car.

All the G6s I have seen have had the wheels. e2helper is connected, so he might be able to confirm the story that I heard that the wheel covers were not available on the first rounds of orders. Only thoughts I have is to use GM Buypower to locate the least expensive G6 you can find in the areas you spend time in.

I find CR likes the practical sedan that's reliable. They don't care about performance, style or excitement. I guess that's what their readership looks for.

It's a good reference but I would never buy their recommended anything without looking around at other options. After all it's opinion and they are not car guys.

Maybe someone already asked this, but why did CR not like the G6 but like the Malibu and Malibu Maxx. They are so similar, could they really notice such huge differences in their testing?

i would hope no one would buy a car based solely on a road test from any source.

CR certainly does make judgments on performance. in their judgment the G6's ride was unsettling without any benefit to handling. they also commented that the engine had ample power.

if you read between the lines from the so called "car guys" like from car and driver you'll see that they weren't exactly crazy about the car either.

Friends of ours looked in CR, saw the top 2 rated small cars and never looked at anything else. They bought the Corolla, done. They told me that they didn't look at other cars as they wanted a reliable car.

Just ordered a new G6 as a company paid car. Got the standard model with ABS and standard sun roof. They don't make color codeing easy these days. I wanted and ultimately got the Granite exterior with Taupe interior (some dealers call it Neutral). The Pontiac brochure does not indicate which combos are valid and the internet sites (Kelly Blue Book, etc) did not correctly indicate it either. I got mixed comments from 2 dealers, 1 said yes the other said no. I finally called the 1-800 Pontiac number who said it's a valid combo.

Looks like the seats are the Taupe color, the dash and parts of the side door panels are black, and you get some fake walnut trim around the shift console.

Also, I could not swing the alloy wheels and just got the base wheel covers. Same 16" tires. I got them sight unseen - unfortunately non of the car literature these days (from any manufacturer) show pictures of "base" models. Nothing but the loaded GT model is shown in the G6 brochure. Very annoying.

The FedEx guy just delivered the G6 brochure. The coupe and the convertible look really nice, hopefully the quality will be up to import standards. Also, it would be nice for the interior to have that certain feel of quality and fluidity that the foreign brands seem to have a lock on. It's something that's hard to explain in words, I'm sure many of you know what I mean though.

We will give the G6 some serious consideration as our next new car purchase if it's up to the benchmark sedans out there.

Hopefully, the Ft. Lauderdale Car Show in March will have all the models we are interested in there. The best way for the wife to choose her final contenders is to sit in each one for awhile to get the feel of the seats, the controls, and the external vision lines to see if she could live with the car over a period of time. A car show is a good way to narrow down one's short list to a few cars before the test drives.

Wow things are quite over here - most people must be happy with their new G6 which is good. I have a company owned one on order due late March. Then again, maybe there are not that many out there yet. I don't see many on the roads here in the Northeast.

I have only seen 2 on the road and one of them was yesterday. That said with all the snow lately, it's hard to tell what kind of cars are driving around as thay are covered.

I still haven't seen another G6 on the road besides my GT. Am still very happy with it after about 3K miles. I wish the steering wheel would tilt down lower, but range is probably limited for safety - to ensure air bag will protect face/head and not just chest.

I have seen quite a few G6's in the Phila area and about half have been GT models. I'm sure I will see them commonly by the summertime, especially once the coupe comes out.

I agree with most of the review. Have to drive one still though.

G6 prices do get up there on the GT models. If I bought I would wait for the 2.4L base model or get a base V6 and add on alloys and ABS. I can't imagine with GTP prices are going to be, yikes!

Just wait about 12 months and they will be discounted $4,000 dollars like everything else GM makes.

I am looking forward to seeing the GTP but I am willing to wait for the big discounts that always come with GM.

I wouldnt expect $4000 rebates anytime soon on a brand new model. Im sure the deals will be nice towards the end of the model year but the whole point in replacing the Grand Am is to have a car that doesnt need $4000 in rebate to move off the lot. GM's older models are always the ones with the largest discounts. Cars like the the Impala, Cavalier and Century had huge rebates while the GP and Malibu had more modest rebates. I would pay about $26K for GTP. I'm hoping they make most equipment standard on the GTP to keep the price down. I heard the GP GXP will cost about $30K so I'm sure the G6 GTP will come in well under that.

I don't think it needs $4000, but $1000-2000 will really spur sales. That said, I don't think there are a lot of cars in the system yet so GM isn't likely to ignite demand until the lots are full (if that happens).

I recall people paying over MSRP for the GTO and less then a year later they are advertised at $8000 off MSPR in the Des Moines, IA area. I realize that is an extreme example but if GM offers $2k and the dealer discounts $2K you have your deep discount.

Des Moines had the Malibu's 4K off sticker not long after they came out. Probably a combination of GM and Dealer discounts.

The G6's sales arent going to take off until the Grand Am disappears and the G6 4 banger/coupe appear on dealer lots. The G6 lineup will have to be complete before you really see this car sell the way the Grand Am sold.

It does make sense because this is supposed to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am, it has nothing to do with the engine. I'm sure the 4 banger will be priced around $19K or so. They will probably strip some features from the V6 model to drop the price.

Pontiac is using numerics to denote chassis sizes (like Audi)... there's a G4 (rebadged Cobalt) sold in Mexico. The G6 is the midsize, and the forthcoming G8 will be the larger car (Bonneville/Grand Prix replacement)...

Anyone who has leased a G6 GT please let me know what your monthly payment is. I have been offered a 4 year lease at $319 a month for a loaded G6 GT with $1000 at inception, for 12 miles a yr, including motor vehicle fees and all taxes.

As a happy owner of a 1999 Grand Am GT1, I was planning on trading for the new G6. However, the magazine road tests have come up short and I have yet to see a G6 on the road here in Southern California. Where the recent Grand Am is everywhere, this new G6 is nowhere. Now, I read that GM is going to produce a 2006 Saturn Aura based on the G6 Epsilon platform with the wonderful Cadillac 250 hp V6 and a 6 speed automatic for the same price as the new G6 GT around $25,000 +. There is something wrong with the GM powers that be that they would produce a G6 with old technology and charge premium prices and then have a modern car ready to be launched next year.

It is very clear that the buying public is not going to spend 25-28 big ones for a car with the same technology that last year's Grand Am was selling for at a heavily rebated 15-18 K price.

I think the new Aura will be a sweet machine with the European styling shown in the pictures and the excellent drivetrain of the new V6 and 6 speed automatic.

Oh how GM loves to squander R&D money to produce mediocracy.

I took my G6 into a pontiac dealer to have some things looked and at and when I got my car back my automatic start doesnt work nor can i find it in my DIC. Does anyone have clue what the heck they did and what I can do to fix it?

Very good question!!!!

The dealer didn't follow instructions regarding the BCM reprogramming they did per campaign 04088.

Take it back to dealer and request they read campaign document again to fix your vehicle.

I think step 4 is the one which tells them on a vehicle with Remote Start option (AP3) they have to do something called SPS reprogramming using "pass-thru" method to reenable the remote start function.

Dealer can always call Technicial Assistance Center for help as well. Those folks have dealt with this before

I can almost guarantee the Aura V6 will be substantially more than a G6. You aren't going to get that 3.6L for the same price as the 3.5L.

first of all the aura looks a lot like the G6. Second of all both will share the same four cylinder engine. I would not expect a Aura V6 to cost the same as the G6 and if it does expect better rebates on the G6. I think the Aura will approach $30K fully loaded. In addition to that expect the 6 speed auto to show up the G6 shortly after the Aura shows up. C&D indicated as much when they did a first drive of the G6.

I think the Aura will be priced above G6 as Saturn is suppose to be now notched above Pontiac and Chevy. The interior is nicer and over all the car looks more expensive. Who knows.. there will be some changes to the Aura before it hits the street so..

All this conjecture seems to me a solid reason to wait to buy a G6 or an Aura until the 2006 models come out. Why buy an expensive vehicle that is going to be superseded by a more advanced engine/transmission combination. Even if it is more expensive you will be getting a more effective vehicle.

The new G6 seems to be a future super value. Consider a car with 200HP V6 which gets great gas mileage,handles well and looks great, for only $12,000 give or take a grand when only two years old. This may be a future gem! I would not be paying $22K or more for a new one though. I was looking at Altima, Mazda3 & 6, but I will consider, after doing more research, this G6 too, then consider a used one. I am tired of getting killed on depreciation on GM autos.

I recently bought a G6 and have had an intermittent problem with the key and ignition. When I go to get out of the car, the key is in the correct position, but I cannot pull it out. I turn the key back on to the 'on' position, and try to pull it out in a fluid motion. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.

The problem occurs more when it is less than 0 C (32F).

Obviously, shifter is in 'P' when this happens.

Anybody have any ideas why colder weather would bring on this condition?

I have heard of this problem in earlier Corvettes and Bonnevilles. I wonder if the 'in dash' ignition has a problem?

Dealer might need to adjust the shift interlock cable running between ignition switch and shifter.

I just purchased a 2005 G6 GT and it stopped running today when I was going about 50 mph. I only had about 200 miles on it.

I pulled over and transmission fluid was everywhere. Anyone else have this type of problem?

Nightmare. Sounds like there was a leak or something wasn't fastened from the factory. Should have been spotted before delivery!!

They don't need a 4 cyl model, but it gives those who like OHCs or 4 bangers an option. I may look at one if my next drive turns out to be on more of a budget. The 2.4L will have 170+ hp.

The four banger will be cheaper so it will give the G6 an entry model that will look good in the ads. I dont know what other equipment they will strip from the base G6 but I'm sure it will be something. I doubt the mileage on the four banger will be much better than the 3.5 V6, especially on the highway.

If I could get 2.4L G6 with alloys, ABS/TC and an MP3 player for around C$22-23K I would be interested. I suspect the 2.4L models will be strippers, that's what most of the 2.2L Grand Ams were when I saw them on the lots.
