Thanks for the compliment on the black Ody. It is going to be pretty in black. Black is ok in NJ. I know you're in FL. I know I can't keep it clean. That is why there are car washes and husbands. I am done with the white, silver and beige cars. I am bored with them. We also have a white 02 Acura TLs and a 98 ML-500 in black. The ML-500 came from FL and it's ALL black. I'm looking foward to get it soon. Maybe 5-6 weeks.

I can definately do without the power liftgate. I can see my kids playing with the keys and whack someone in the head in the parking lot. I know I should keep them close to me, but they're really fun to play with when you're 4. Besides, there were many times after we had dinner in the restaurant, the power doors were opened before we got outside.

HEY! I resemble that remark! Is my wife your sister??? Actually, I wash the cars because I am too A.R. My wife says that if I am going to point out where she missed (or redo what she missed), I might as well do it myself. She's got a good point...

This is slight off-topic, but I got a question about power doors. Is it easy to open them by mistake, like getting something jammed against the remote in the pocket/purse? Do you have to unlock the car (on the remote) before you can open the power doors (via remote)? My nightmare scenario is the car's in the garage, kids play with the remote (or it got jammed in the purse) and accidentally open the power doors, and I find the car battery dead because the dome light's been on overnight.

I'm with you on this. One of the main reasons why I've been holding out for the '05 is the power liftgate, as my wife has her hands full with our 11-month-old twins. I was really hoping for this feature to be on the EX-L, or at least an option that can be added to an EX-L. Hopefully Honda did their research and found out that a majority of people want this feature but cannot afford to pay $34K for a vehicle. Not that it would be a deal-breaker for me, but it would mean that I wouldn't be able to get the RES (which I think is a MUST HAVE, but my wife disagrees because she is only thinking about cost).

Of course you have to unlock the car first before you open the powerdoors. My kids are clever. By the way, sometimes my kids leave the door open all night and my battery never died yet. I can't fit that van in the garage anyway.
  • mochisushimochisushi Member Posts: 126
With our '99, you needed to hold the button down for about a second before it opened. You also had to unlock the doors before opening.

We remove our shoes in the garage, so when I am bending over to put on my shoes, I frequently set off the alarm because the keys are in my pocket. Personally, I have had more problems setting off the panic alarm on the Ody, my Pilot and the Sub than opening the doors. But it is probably just the way that my keys are arranged on the key ring. I could see how it could press other buttons as well.

My husband likes to wash the cars. He always washes the ML-500 everyweek in the summer, and figures that he has to wash the Acura, and if he is on a roll, then he gets to wash the big mini-van. He even sprays that shinny stuff on my tires to make them newer. That's so nice of him.

Please give us the decibel readings.
    We want all details.
    Quieter than Sienna?
    Are you kidding?
    I will be shocked!

I just put a car seat in the back 3rd row. There aren't any teathers on it. Are there teathers in the newer vans, and '05 3rd row?

I gave up on washing my car as soon as I had kids. Boy, they get into everything and make it take about twice as long. I am sure many people dont mind that, but try doing it in the florida heat, wow I am sweating just thinking about it. I have learned to make my peace with car washes like Shiners. It may not be perfect, but at least it is getting clean. I think the bigger the car, the more a car wash is necessary :p

    I wash my fleet regularly.

My cousin washes her Odyssey every time it rains. Just a rinse, really. ;-)

Her husband actually does have a policy of washing the van once a year, "whether it needs it or not" he says.

I feel the same way as you about the power liftgate, been waiting for it to come out. I am petite myself (and lazy to boot) so in my universe a power liftgate is a necessity. I wonder if given an option what I would pick: liftgate or RES? RES for sure w/NAV gotta have it, boy my van is getting more expensive by the second :)

    Lynn,
Maybe Charley did a bit more damage to your property than you initially thought...say about $35K. Better raise that claim, if you know what I mean...

Look at the top of the well by the rear hatch. There are 2 or 3 covers. Pry them off and you catch attach tether hooks there. The tether then stretches across and blocks the well.

    Turbo,
Was anything mentioned/documented regarding dimensional changes in Wheelbase, Track, Width, Length, Weight?
  • cooldad24cooldad24 Member Posts: 163
Is that mean if I need the NAV, I need to add the RES too? I like to have NAV but my wife and I both don't like our kids to watch the video on the road trip especially on the rough surface. I wonder if the NAV can be have as option alone for EX-L? I guess this Nov. I need to plan a trip to the Auto Show in SF.

For the battery on the door left open, unless you set the lihgt to manual ON, the light will be shut off after 2 minutes when in the auto mode and key removed. One thing I wish Honda fix it: if any light been turned on by passenger, it should be turned off automatically once the key is removed like the door opened. It may not drain the all juice when battery is new but it could if the battery getting old. It happened two months ago when my nephew forgot to turn the light off. When I going to work on the next day morning, it take longer and struggle to start. Few more hours will keep me on the drive way. Mind you my battery is still original which is 5 years old.

I can see my 3-year old having fun with the keys also. He had a blast playing with the power-sliding door buttons when we were test-driving the Sienna. The solution is to keep the keys away from the kids. I know me and my wife can be pretty firm about it.

My husband keeps telling me that for that kind of money I should be looking at luxury cars. I have to remind him that to me having the room and comfort of a minivan (and lower to the ground for the little ones) is a luxury.
  • mochisushimochisushi Member Posts: 126
Having room and comfort of a minivan is a NECESSITY. Having quiet time with your spouse...now THAT's a luxury!
  • cooldad24cooldad24 Member Posts: 163
I second that. And be alone with your lovely the other without kids interrupt is a dream! Well at least before all kids are 15 or older.
  • fbearfbear Member Posts: 117
"Does that mean if I need the NAV, I need to add the RES too?"

I am afraid it looks that way. Below are the 7 models dealers can order. None have NAV without RES.

    LX
    EX
    EX-L
    EX-L RES
    EX-L NAVI/RES
    EX-L TOURING
    EX-L TOURING/NAVI/RES

I think that the NAV cannot be bought alone without buying leather and RES. Oh well. Best Buy has an aftermarket model, but I think the Honda model should be better.
  • gjay1170gjay1170 Member Posts: 67
I found 2 covers. One on each side, but it's for the bulb replacement. There was one thing attatched to the trunk area in the middle. Is that it? I think the teathers are different for the '01 than the '04. Anyway, one more month with this van, and I get the '05.
  • texasmomtexasmom Member Posts: 114
We've never had RES. You say you don't like your kids to watch the video on the road trip especially on the rough surface. Why is that? Does it mess up the RES? Or does it just make them carsick? Please let me know because I am going to be deciding in the next three months whether to get NAV/RES or not in whichever new minivan I buy.
    Thanks!

At 60 mph: Sienna 72 db, Odyssey 68 db
  • texasmomtexasmom Member Posts: 114
I guess those are '04 model db levels. If so, then why does the '04 Odyssey seem to be more noisy than the '04 Sienna?
  • dannodanno Member Posts: 114
    Wow..4 db better is impressive.
  • pluto168pluto168 Member Posts: 44
"I guess those are '04 model db levels."

I remember reading somewhere that Ody 04 was 73db, or a number slightly higher than the Sienna's. I think 68 is the 05 Ody's nubmer. Very impressive. It should translates to a very quiet ride.
  • pluto168pluto168 Member Posts: 44
Ah, here is the stuff I read before:

There's an interesting article on minivans at http://popularmechanics.com/popmech/auto3/9911AUCTP.html, which includes noise measurements at idle, maximum (throttle?), and 60 mph. The Sienna was the quietest of the twelve vehicles at idle and 60 mph, while the Mazda MPV slightly edged the Sienna at maximum throttle. The Sienna had the greatest edge at idle (6.8 dB quieter than the Odyssey). At 60 MPH, the Sienna was only 0.5 dB quieter than the Odyssey, according to the article.
  • mochisushimochisushi Member Posts: 126
But that depends on the road surface. I have found with my '03 Pilot, it is much quieter than our '99 Odyssey on all roads. It is as quiet as our '03 Sub on smooth roads, but noisier on rougher roads, especially at highway speeds.
  • mochisushimochisushi Member Posts: 126
I just noticed when I drove home...My '03 Pilot's speedometer goes to 140mph and 75 mph at zero degrees. So, this isn't necessarily a Canadian Ody with the speedo in kph. When I'm cruising on the interstate, the needle is just past top center. Maybe the Ody will have 85 at zero degrees. Will be easy to spot if I am past top center I might want to slow down...or might not.
  • pluto168pluto168 Member Posts: 44
I suppose the db measurements were done with the same/similar road & conditions...
  • mochisushimochisushi Member Posts: 126
I agree...I think I was unclear. What I meant to point out is that the readings may have been taken on a smooth road, but getting out on a rougher surface is where a difference may show up. Hondas have typically been pretty quiet as far as wind noise and noise from passing vehicles, but road noise has usually been the "problem".

    1. Does having NAV enhance having RES in any way? or is NAV just nice to have for mapping purposes? (the 05 is the 1st model yr to offer both)
    2. Can you control the RES from the dash or only from the rear?

We just brought home child #3 and have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 05 Ody b/c we currently have all three kids squished like sardines in the back of our Accord. We are on a waiting list and we "guessed" for the dealer to allocate a RES/NAV Touring for us, but will probably change trim levels to the EX as we are reading that the Touring will not offer the pop up 8th seat. We would prefer cloth seats, but that doesn't seem to be available in combo w/ the RES or RES/NAV. So do I get the EX cloth w/ an aftermarket DVD? or do the benefits of factory RES or RES+NAV (w/ leather) outweigh my desire for cloth seats? (it's hot and humid here in FL and I very much dislike sticking to the seats...)
  • beamerbeamer Member Posts: 8
    See above and then:
    3. What are the benefits of having RES factory-installed vs. after-market?

    Thanks for your input!
  • texasmomtexasmom Member Posts: 114
Appreciated all the noise comments. Hasn't anybody out there had any experience with aftermarket "sound deadening" treatments? I complained to the Honda dealer about the road noise (which is my only complaint about the Odyssey after comparing it to Sienna) and he said to buy special mats. I surfed around and read some advertisements from aftermarket audio system installers who claim to make any car as quiet as a real luxury car by installing sound damping materials in various places. Is this too good to be true? Could it mess up anything in the car? It kind of scares me. It's just the thought that somebody working in one of those places would be going in with aftermarket additions of any sort--that they might somehow interfere with something important in a vehicle with which they might be only marginally familiar. So I've 2 questions: do the sound deadening treatments make much difference w/ road noise and would the installers possibly mess up the car?
  • texasmomtexasmom Member Posts: 114
Add this question to the above question: Not only what are the risks and benefits of RES/NAV that is factory-installed vs. after-market...are there any risks to letting aftermarket installers do the work?

Carly Patterson just won the gold medal in woman's all-round gymnastics. So proud.
  • texasmomtexasmom Member Posts: 114
Yes! She rocks, and made us proud.
But, I ran right back to the computer to see if my noise questions and RES questions got answers...guess everyone else is still watching Olympics--too bad about lack of Odyssey '05 commercials.
  • mochisushimochisushi Member Posts: 126
Oh GREAT! I have it on (MDT), and now I know the ending...LOL :-)

Actually, I was practicing Karate with my son. Tournament on Saturday, then another in Vegas over L.D. weekend. Read your earlier posts, but don't have an answer for you regarding the RES. I know some people that have had it done and they like it, but the ones that I have seen had head units that didn't look very well integrated into the dash. The screen looked good, though.

As for soundproofing...I don't know that the spray on type really works. No proof though, but I would be skeptical. I would think the best type is the fiberous material that would fit under the carpeting. I'm not expert by any means, though.
  • fbearfbear Member Posts: 117
Factory installed RES more integrated- DVD player probably built into dash versus after market where actual player is either up on the ceiling (making the unit bigger) or under a seat or wherever they can find room.

May also be harder to integrate after market system with cars speaker system.

From what has leaked out so far it sound like the factory RES will be aiming for a best in category status. 9 inch screen and powerful sound system. Also comes with 2 wireless headsets and a remote. I assume there will also be controls built into the dash.

Plenty of good aftermarket RES systems available but I think the factory system will be hard to beat in both quality and convenience of integration.

Did someone ask about after market NAV? A huge difference there- I would not go aftermarket for NAV. You have to get a screen bolted onto your dash...and Honda's NAV system is considered the best in the business.
  • pluto168pluto168 Member Posts: 44
    > but road noise has usually been the "problem"

What contributes to the mojority of road noise? tires?

I guess a fair measure would be conducting the tests on typical roads (such as state or interstate HW) at around 65-70mph. Do you consider these type of roads smooth or rough?
  • pluto168pluto168 Member Posts: 44
    > I would not go aftermarket for NAV.

I currently use a portable NAV - Garmin street pilot 2610. It's been great for my wife driving around town in her bimmer 'cause I don't get calls from her asking directions (:. On long trips, we had to take my suv to haul all the kids stuffs. And we also take the NAV to the suv. It saved us a great deal on every trip - from finding hotels to amusement parks to McDonald's...

What I am trying to say is that a portable one might be a good choice if you don't want to spend $2K build-in NAVs for each of your vehicles. And it's cheaper too. It costed me only $800 a year ago.

Having said that, a portable NAV will have smaller screen and probably less functions. But my wife's been VERY happy about the Garmin because it's easy to use and it takes her to where she wants to go. She does not care too much about the fancy features.

Finally got a chance to upload fbear's dealer color chart from earlier today. You can view it at http://photos.yahoo.com/foxb11@sbcglobal.net. It's the only photo in the 2005 Honda Odyssey folder (so far). The picture isn't that big, although you can download it to your computer and see it in full size. If people have other pictures that they want to post on a common site, I'm open to posting them if you send them to me, although I can only post them in the evening since my work connection does not allow me to access my photo site.

According to Car and Driver's latest minivan comparison, the Sienna is 67dBA @ 70mph, the T&C is 68dBA, and the '04 Odyssey & Quest are 70dBA.

So these decibel readings (72dB & 68dB) are according to what source?

First, I would love it if the '05 Ody were the quietest. As far as I'm concern, I hope the Ody is 65dBA @ 70mph.
But deep inside, I just doubt that.

However, based on those new pics, I am now very impressed with the new Ody.

The NAV looks absolutely amazing. Add in the recent Money magazine article about how the Ody NAV can recognize over 700 voice commands (compared to Lexus's 200+ voice commands or Lincoln's 174+ voice commands), I think I will most likely buy the new Ody Touring w/NAV+RES.

I am now assuming based on these pics that the Touring Ody has rearview camera + front & rear sensors, but the EX-L w/NAV+RES does NOT. Also the Touring has fog lights, and the EX-L does not.

I wonder if the Touring will have REAL woodtrim?

I like the Ody's fold-down tray on the front row and the Lazy-Susan on the 2nd row A LOT.

Now about the grille, is that black surround with chrome horizontal slats?
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
That looks like old information to me. The Sienna looks like a 2003 or older. Car & Driver has the newest dBA readings in June 2004 issue.
