Thanks,
Will arrive early next week. Had five dealers going via email as I live within an hour of four of them. Fortunately the local dealer came through, a relatively painless process.
Will heartily recommend Edmunds and the forum to get anybody in the ballpark of what they should be paying.
What is the best way to approach dealerships for pricing? Questions I have are:
- Should I call or email them directly
- Should I contact a floor sales person or the internet manager
- Should I give them the price I am willing to pay or ask them to give me their best price
- Will I have better results using a car buying broker such as Cars.com, Autoweb, etc.
Thanks in advance.
Go in person
Give them the price you are willing to pay (I suggest for a non-navi $25,000 before taxes)
Go the last business day of the month
Most important, be prepared to turn around an walk out. (Most likely you will not get past the door)
We will make some offers next week and see what happens. We are in no hurry and can wait for the right deal to come along.
Many mentioned dealers are more willing to negotiate at the end of the month, is there even more willingness toward the end of a quarter? I've read that dealerships get quarterly incentives from the manufacturers too.
We picked up our Carbon Gray/Quartz/6MT/Non-Navi TSX last night. We ended up paying $25,600 before doc fees, tax, and DMV fees ($27,369 OTD). It’s not the absolute best deal but it’s probably a fair one given there is a short supply of 6-speeds in the color combo we wanted. By the way, I highly doubt we could have gotten a TSX for $25K unless there was leasing, dealer financing and/or trade-in involved (methods for the dealer to recover their profits through).
Here is my experience with some of the dealers.
Bill Vince’s Bridgewater Acura – This is where we purchased our car from. It was hassle free and painless. The Internet Sales team is comprised of 2 gentlemen who were no-nonsense and prompt. I highly recommend you try them 1st. If they have the vehicle in stock and it’s toward the end of the month, you should have a good shot at getting a decent deal.
Here’s how it went. I called their Internet Sales and they had a color combo we were willing to take. I offered them $25,300, they countered with $25,900, I countered with $25,600 and asked them to throw in the trunk tray (not sure the exact value, maybe $150). They accepted. They faxed over the buyer’s bill, all numbers checked, I gave a CC deposit, and we picked up the car that evening. A pleasant floor salesman assigned to our order handled the final paperwork and demonstrated the car features.
Ryan’s Open Road Acura in East Brunswick – My experience was disappointing at this dealership. I felt they had no intention of selling me the car I wanted at $25,500, even though they verbally accepted my offer.
We test drove the TSX there, so out of courtesy I called them first to give them a shot at the sale. Working with the salesman who took us on the test drive, we came to a price of $25,500 which he said he would present to his manager. He later called back to say it has been accepted BUT they only have a blue 6 speed left (which was probably the demo car we test drove). Somehow in a span of 4 hours, he no longer has the other two 6-speeds that we were interested in. He said he might have something in 2 weeks. Yeah, okay.
Open Road Acura of Wayne - I contacted this place because it seemed like a number of members purchased their cars there. I spoke to a floor salesman over the phone. They didn’t have any of the color combo I was looking for in stock. He offered to locate one for me and asked me what I was willing to pay. Based on Mulifat’s purchase price there, I made an offer of $25K. He didn’t balk but he also refused to present the offer to his manager unless I showed up in person. Since the dealership is about 70 minutes drive away, I did not intend to go there unless it was to sign the final papers. Maybe other members who had a positive experience there dealt with the more scrupulous salespeople.
Other dealers - I filled the online info request form for 6 other dealers. 5 responded back via email (2 of them canned responses). None had what I wanted. As for prices, only 2 gave quotes via the email and they were not compelling.
All in all, buying through Bridgewater Acura has been the least stressful car purchasing experience. Now it’s time for us to enjoy our new TSX.
This board is great on quotes for a purchase but am thinking to lease a TSX non navi for 3 yrs. Any ideas what quotes I should be looking for ?
Thanks a bunch !
You probably want to also ask that question of Car_man in our Lease Questions - Ask Here discussion. He's a wealth of knowledge on this subject.
Good luck!
So the selling price of the car is indeed quite relevant to you if you are leasing.
Just completed the deal at Open Road Wayne Acura using Internet manager at end of month. Bought a TSX Auto NAV for $26,835 before taxes. Offer was also for a nonNAV for $25,135. Car being delivered in two weeks. Dealer was very good to work with and no issues so far. Only funny business was offer of accesories at a "special" price which was actually more than their parts department had quoted earlier that day. For example, $754 for the rear spoiler but only $599 plus $90 for install from parts department.
Thanks for the advice!
Thank you!
I don't feel too bad about "over paying" the few hundred dollars. And you are right, the money will not amount to much spread out over the course of the years. At least 10 years in our case. I just contacted the American Cancer Society to donate the car the TSX is replacing - a Maxima we bought 12 years ago, still in great shape!
Sounds like you got yourself a really good deal and that going through Internet Sales worked out well. In my case, the salesman checked the May delivery list (Carbon Grary was already sold and the other 6-speed was Red) before offering to locate one for me.
Just curious, did you lease or finance through them? Did you have a trade in?
I actually got the carbon grey w/nav. This was a cash deal so no financing discussion at all. No trade either. So things were pretty simple.

Wow, you really did get yourself a good buy. That's great!
And I stand corrected, it sounds like you can get a TSX/Non-Navi close to $25K.
We really wanted the Ebony interior at first but settled for the Quartz instead. Very happy with it... Carbon Gray/Quartz turned out to be a sharp combo.
Enjoy your car.
Carbon Gray/Quartz, non nav, proc pack, AUTO
veh price: $25, 296 plus doc fee 289,
total: 25,585
that price includes protection package ,which they offered to throw in for $250 after we had the final price, but I got it included.
I bought of out state so tax will be taken care of later. In conclusion I am very pleased with the deal and the service at the Acura Dealer (Pye in Chatt TN), I worked out the deal on saturday and drove up there sunday to pick up and sign, they had the car pulled into the showroom. Very positive experience all the way around.
As far as the car itself, i like the color more every time i see it, this car is beautiful and I cant believe the price considering comparable vehicle will cost thousands more. Thanks for sharing everyone and giving me a starting place for negotiations.
$25,600 before doc fees, tax, and DMV fees ($27,369 OTD).
My problem is I've never bought a new car before so could some of you veterans give me some info on the addt'l costs I'm going to incur and do I pay them all that day? I want to joing the TSX owner group, but I refuse to go into the poorhouse to do it. My budget can stand a maximum of 27,000 total including fees etc. I live in NC if that helps any.
Congratulations! Sounds like you got a really good deal on your car. Your TSX makes it three Carbon Gray/Quartz in a row! Enjoy!!

As far as additional costs go, www.carbuyingtips.com has good info on some of the fees the dealers may try to pass on to you. Most popular ones are window etching fee and marketing fee. Do not pay these fees! When we bought our other car a few years ago, the dealer had the window etching fee pre-printed on the buyer’s bill. They said they had already etched the VIN# on the windows but I refused to pay for it (after all, I never authorized the work!) They reluctantly took it off.
The only “legitimate” fee is the documentation fee. Most likely this will not be directly negotiable but you can try to offset that with a lower sales price. Doc fee is typically $150-$300 so make sure you find out how much it is. (Doc fee is just another way for them to make more money off of you, how many clerks do you know get $75/hour for calling the DMV?)
After you come to a verbal agreement, get them to fax over the buyer’s bill to make sure there are no other hidden fees. If the numbers checks out, you can seal the deal with a credit card deposit.
If this deal doesn't go through, try calling the Internet Sales departments of the other dealers. Ask them if they have what you are looking for in stock. If they don’t, check to see what they will be getting in their next shipment. If they have what you want, make them an offer and prepare to negotiate from there. It does appear dealers are more willing to negotiate toward the end of the month, but you may run the risk of not getting the exact car you want.
Good luck!
1. what kind of financing do acura's dealership offer? Are the pretty high? Is it out of the question to have a low rate?
2. I know that the average selling price of the TSX is 25600 or so there about. Again do u think it is impossible to get it for 24000. I will be going at the end of this month. Probably over memorial day weekend or even on memorial day which ends up being the last day of the month. i know the invoice price is around 24000 but I just want to know if i am being completel unrealistic.
Go to your bank or credit union and get approved for the best loan terms that you can, before you go shopping. Then after you have negotiated your deal, ask the dealer what they can do.. If they are higher, ask them to beat your financing rate. This is the only way to find out how low they can go.

I need your advice. I just got my first quote on a 2004 TSX 6-Speed with Navigation for $27,503 before TT&L from Internet Sales at Acura North Scottsdale in Arizona. What do you think I should counter offer? I was thinking $26,200. I know the Invoice is $25,967. I believe their next offer would be at $600-$1000 over invoice. What do you think? What has anyone else paid for a car close to that?

Click Message Center and when there is a reply, you'll see it.
6 speed NAV is a rare bird - I don't think you'll get $300 over invoice IMHO.
when you guys post your purchase price before TTL. Is it before or including destination charge.
Also did any of you also consider tne TL? If you did what are your thoughts?
See my posts for my experiences. I did all the research and negotiation for our TSX and ended up purchasing it from Bridgewater Acura (my husband went for the test drive and car pick-up). I suggest you do your test drive and research first then negotiate through the dealers’ Internet Sales departments. In Northern NJ, try Wayne Acura (I did’t have any luck there but other posters have) and Bridgewater Acura.
As others have pointed out, negotiate on the price of the vehicle first. Do not inform them you plan to lease and/or trade in. Transact your trade in separately but be prepared for them to low ball you if you got a good price on the TSX. (My friend was recently offered a $200 trade in on his old Honda that was worth $5K, after negotiating a fantastic price on a new Honda).
Generally, I didn’t feel like I was at a disadvantage. The Internet has definitely leveled the playing field.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
Yes, the purchase prices quoted here include destination charge.
When we went to pick up our TSX, the thought of getting the TL instead crossed my mind. I like the look of the TL better and the V6/higher HP, but not enough to spend the extra money. We're very happy with our TSX so far.
Thanks for all of the information, especially regarding trade in values. I plan on trading in my 1995 VW Jetta.
When your husband went for the test drive, how long after did you contact the dealership to make an offer? Or did you make the offer before your husband went to test drive?
We test drove at Ryan’s Open Road Acura in East Brunswick and I made an offer (over the phone to the salesman who took us on test drive) one week later. As it turned out, he claimed they sold the two TSXs we were interested in (non-Navi, 6-speed in Silver/Ebony and Gray/Quartz).
and I'm interested in a new tsx w/nav .
So what does anyone think is a good asking price without the salesman laughing you out the building?
I was considering 325, 9-3, s40, g35, accord coupe v6, and couple others, but for the money, tsx is a good choice.
As far as buying tips, everyone seems to be giving an excellent advices. However, bargaining and negotiating is not something that can be done just by following directions. Every little action you take, every little word you say can affect your prices. For instance, it also depends on your age, your sex, and i hate to say it, but your race. For me, i'm not poor, but yes i'm cheap. I would never pay an average price. Average price means the numbers considered also includes the people who did't mind paying extra.
Another tip before you buy, Carbon Gray is by far the most popular color for TSX. Dealers MIGHT hold onto this color for people who are willing to pay little extra.
Some sale people might ACT like they're being very open with you. Yes, it is true that there was accident with a train carrying the TSX to the midwest region, so all the other dealers across the country had to "share" their cars, thus leaving them with less inventory of TSX. TSX is a hot car, they know that there will be people who are paying extras for these cars, and since they don't have many in the lot, they don't mind hold it just for a short while.
Another way for you to get it slightly cheaper than others, is by talking to the sale person and expressing to him that you're willing to accept a car that will come in the future shipment. They might knock off little more because they only have to hold on to the car for 1 day or whatever. There's a lot of factors.
I saw a previous entry explaining the experience she had with new jersey dealerships, such as bill vince's bridgewater, open road in east brunswick, wayne, etc. that was a good post.
I know most of the Acura dealerships around new jersey, since i did a lot of research before making my purchase.
FYI i got Carbon Gray/Quartz with Auto / no navi. I would like to share with you the price that i paid, but 1) i don't want to upset the people who already purchased a car at a great deal. 2) i don't want people who is looking to buy TSX to wait until they get the same pricing as me, since you never will. 3) One hidden reason why i can't tell you.
If you live in jersey, I'm willing to meet with you just to explain in better about my experiences, and MAYBE even go to the dealership with you as a friend to see what I can do. e-mail me back if you're interested.
Sorry for writing a long post.
am interested in the TSX without Navi ... preferably carb gray or silver...i hear they are tough to find b/c, among other things, acura put out limited #s for the first year.
i can buy tomorrow, but am in no rush....i can also buy in december....whenever price is right. any advice on the following dealers... montclair, wayne, denville, springfield, east brunswick, bridgewater? better to deal over internet/phone that make a trip to dealer?
rutjk...if you have some time, i'd like to ask you a few questions about your experience.
Despite having more than 20 TSXs and more than 20 TLs on their lot, they will not sell a non-navi TSX or TL for less than $1000 OVER MSRP. This dealership would rather let cars sit on their lot then make a sale at a reasonable price.
When I showed a price I received from an out of state dealer that was almost $3,000 less, they told me they could not come close to matching. I could buy either car back east, have it shipped to LV and still pay between $1,500 and $2,000 less than the local dealer.
The sad thing is that people actually pay these prices out here to get either a TSX or TL.
Lucigpa, just click on my name and it should show the e-mail address, just write to me about what you said you wanted to ask.
