    Hello everyone,

Bought a 2005 XC90 V8 in July. Smooth ride, runs great, and has surprisingly good gas milage for a V8 (has averaged 20mpg over the past 6,000 miles). My only complaint is a noisy enigine compartment.

When I am in the car, there is no unusually loud engin noise. However, when I stand outside the car as my wife turns on the car and drives away (or at idle), it sounds like an old washing machine about to fly away. Could also say its like a lawnmower (not quite that loud, but loud). By comparison, a friend's Acura MDX makes almost no noise at idle.

This is my first Volvo and first European car. Is this normal? Anyone?

Two days ago the power steering went out on my 04 T6 with 15,500 miles. The dealer found metal shavings in the power steering pump and replaced it but that did not correct the problem. He is now going to try replacing the rack. Has anyone else had this problem or have any idea how/why it happened?

I was also surprised to hear from the dealer that the car needs new brake pads now. Has anyone else needed new brake pads at 15k miles? My previous car went thru brake pads about every 30-40k miles.

I'm not particularly happy with the car--it has left me walking twice in one day, both times returning from the service department. That, however, may say more about my dealer's service department than the car.

My wife has a 2005 V-8 XC=90. In the past 6 weeks it has gone dead (the latest being 2 hours ago) in the middle of the highway. It was towed and kept for a week at the dealership who said it had a defective fuel pump. They were nice, fixed it, and brought it back to us. Same thing happened tonight. Again it has been towed to the dealer (100 miles away). Anyone else out there with this problem? I don't want the car back because my wife and kids are always in it. It has received ONLY premium gas in its life and has 15,000 miles. We love the car, but TWICE in 6 weeks it has stranded us!

    Hello:
I have a 2004 XC90 with 48,000 miles on it. No major problems yet, but the dealer asked if I wanted to purchase the extended warranty b/f mine runs out. What are your thoughts/experiences on this? Thanks alot.

for my 3 volvos (96, 01, 04) i have opted for no extended warranty. same for most of the other ~15 cars i have bought new since 1984. the longest i've kept any car is 5 years / 100k miles.
in my experience and from what i have seen, major stuff does not break on volvos (or most cars) until after 100k or 5 years. after the longest available extended warranties expire. probably no 'coincidence' there if you know what i mean, folks! obviously the math says that the extended warranties are a "profit-center" for those who sell them - because in the long run they are designed to make $ for the insurance company not for us drivers. also note that most manufacturers will sell you an extended warranty any time before the car is a year old or hits 12k miles. they might not offer you the same price after a year, but they *are* always able to offer large discounts on the warranty pricing, there's lots of 'padding' in the prices.

We have had the same problem with our 2005 XC90. I wish I had something positive to report, but I feel just as frustrated as you do. It has died now 3 separate times in 6 weeks with me & kids in the car. They have replaced the fuel pump and admit that there are a handful of cars with this problem and they don't know how to fix it. We're in Oklahoma & the dealer admits that one other car has had the problem here, and at least 7 in the "south." Ours has 20,000 miles on it, we only put in premium fuel. The car has died after I put gas in in it...within 40 blocks or so, it just stops running. Right now the dealer has sent the pump & a fuel sample off to Volvo and we are in a holding pattern. It's a HUGE safety concern. We're waiting to see what "they" say this week, but I don't want the car back. I hope that Volvo does the right thing, but am not holding my breath. You might check you state's Lemon Law...Let me know if you get any answers.

The ticking would happen while the car was on, driving or parked. It ended up being a broken vacuum line. But we had another issue with the "propeller blade" breaking which also made a ticking which sounded like the front of the car. The vacuum ticking is like a peculating coffee maker-no kidding-and the second ticking sounds like a rock in your tire. Drive by a wall and see if the noise reflects into the car, then it could be a drive line or something else. good luck!!

I used cheap gas in my car & it complained at me for almost a week-I wouldn't recommend that as a usual thing unless you add some additives to it...
  • jenchick79jenchick79 Member Posts: 11
I contacted the Volvo Lemon people & they told me to go away because my car had more than 50k miles on it. My service manager said they could give me a "deal" on a brand new XC90. I got an attorney and I gave back my car today-Volvo didn't even argue-but my car has been in the shop for 1/4 of the time i've owned it. But I'd recommend you get an attorney-the one I had was paid by Volvo as part of our settlement, and all we paid for was the mileage which came to about 2K for almost 60k miles & my attorney's fees were 2500. Good luck!!

My car needed breaks every 15k & rotars on the 3rd change. That seems to be standard for what my dealer said...You probalby didn't have enough power stearing fluid in your power steering pump-thats PROBABLY why it went out.
  • joehandjoehand Member Posts: 6
Well there is a systemic problem with the V-8! My dealer didn't admit it. We currently are also waiting to hear from Volvo and have taken a loaner and have refused to take back the XC-90. I understand the sales manager is driving our car. Your experience seems exactly like ours as Volvo cannot explain what happened but says there probably was a bad "batch" of fuel pumps. As in your case, this always happened after filling up with gas. Please let me know what happens. Unfortunately, our lemon law is 3 strikes, but we aren't going to risk another failure. Good luck.

I am a wife with 2 kids whose 2005 XC-90 has died on me twice (most recent, yesterday) for the exact same reason..."faulty fuel pump". Both times I had just filled my tank up with gas, and didn't make it a block from the gas station before my car shut down and would not restart. I bought the car this past January and have 27,000 miles on it. I am fuming today. I told the service manager that this is totally unacceptable, and that I want a new car. I am looking into the GA lemon laws to see if anything can be salvaged. I really liked my car prior to this second episode.
  • eliaselias Member Posts: 2,209
strandedinga, what makes you think a new xc90 will have a more reliable fuel pump than your current xc90?! as for lemon law, i don't know of any that would apply to your situation. imho two failed fuel pumps doesn't even come close to meeting the "lemon" or "buy-back" level. well, best wishes with your 3rd xc90 fuel pump! it is infuriating to be stranded by a new car. did your xc90 ever run out of gas? in-tank fuel pumps tend to burn out if that happens. i wonder if the xc90 has more than one fuel pump. some cars have one near the engine and one in the tank. let us know if you have any other 'interesting' things with your xc90 - best wishes...

    Are you crazy?

This car has some glitch which burns up the fuel pump. It doesn't seem very common, but sporadic with certain cars. How can anyone trust their wife or kids to drive this car on trips or at night?

No, I will not accept this particular car back and I have some very good attorney friends who will back me up on this. And NO, this car never ran out of gas. I have driven over 2 million miles and never had a fuel pump go out on me, much less twice in 6 weeks.
  • eliaselias Member Posts: 2,209
you talkin to me? yes, plenty of fine people think i'm crazy, how astute of you to note that from just one posting!

if i thought any car was unsafe for my wife/kids, or for me,
i'd trade it in a heartbeat and chalk it up to experience, probably avoiding that brand forever. i doubt i'd be a whiner about it, trying to get lemon-law buyback due to a couple of fuel pump failures, but hey, do what you gotta do - whatever you judge best for your fam!
if you win a lemon law thing or get volvo to do "buy-back" due to two fuel pump failures i will be surprised and will eat a used xc90 floor mat for my midday meal.
    ttfn!

I recently purchased a XC90 2005 V6, my first experience with Volvo. Anti Skid Service Required light would go off for no apparent reason car would idle down and die in the middle of the road, this would happen more frequently at increased intervals until it went into system immobilized.
requiring tow truck. this started at 900mls. to make a long story short now at 12,000 miles in the shop most of the time. Volvo has paid off the loan and returning most of the money we paid on the loan. Look up Lemon Laws on the internet, consumer legal svc will help you at no cost. :lemon:

Did they say it was the fuel pump or the computer, and did they ever figure it out?

I am just about to buy Volvo XC90 2.5T. Safety determined my choice (2 kids!) Do you think 2006 still has fuel pump problem. I don't want to be stuck somewhere during snow storm in New England. Thank you for your input. Dealer said the issue has been addressed in 2006 models. Shell I trust him ?
  • joehandjoehand Member Posts: 6
I don't know if they ever figured it out, Neither I or the two other people on this board with 2005 XC-90 V-8s with this problem have had it adequately explained to them by Volvo. The problem seems confined to the V-8s though.
  • guyfguyf Member Posts: 456
I never heard of the problem on 2.5T's. This engine has been aorund for many years without any problem. Mine and my wife S-60, and her previous S-70 never had this problem.

I Went to buy a 2005 v8 at a south Florida Volvo dealer. On the first test the car seemed very slow. I told the sales rep that the suv may have a faulty transmission.
she said it is only low on gas. On the way to the gas station the dash computer read transmission service' or something like that. This suv had only 83 mls on it. We limped back to the dealer and drove another v8 xc90 (on 65 mls on ado). Well the steering was vibration like a wild horse. The sales person said it is due to the road, so, I gave her the car to drive. To sum, she agreed and I left not buying the car and happy that this occurred before I bought the suv.

I am having the identical problems with my 2003 XC90. My anti skid service light is coming on, the vehicle is idling different at odd times, and now 3 times in the past two months, the car will not start. A message that indicates "Immobilizer" see owners manual is showing on the dash. Can you tell me more about who you worked with- the dealership or Volvo Consumer affairs, to get the loan paid off? Despite the loan being paid, are you still stuck with the vehicle and it's problems? :lemon:

I have only had my 2006 XC90 for a week and one of the door handles is now broken. When I picked up the kids from school yesterday, they had trouble opening the door. Today, when I picked them up, they couldn't open it at all and had to use the passenger door to get in. The handle looks misaligned and can't be opened from the outside, but it can be opened from the inside of the car.

I know it's a minor thing, but is this what I have to look forward to?
  • cv2006cv2006 Member Posts: 23
The broken door handle was fixed today. Apparently, it was some sort of cable that wasn't installed correctly at the factory. Anyway, that's what I was told, that they have seen this problem with some S60's, but not on the XC90's.

All good, but now there is an intermittent noise coming from the engine. I noticed the noise yesterday and thought it was related to the a/c being on. Today, my husband drove it and heard the noise, it's louder today.

I have never had problems like this with a brand new car. :confuse: To say that I'm disappointed is an understatement. I have had the truck for 11 days and it's going back in the shop for the second time.

i have a 05 xc90. after 5000 miles the car vibrates at idle. the vibration comes thru the steering wheel. I am lemon lawing the car and of couse volvo says this is normal for this vehicle. i would like to find people with similar complaints

Purchased a 2006 XC90 2.5T AWD in sept. 2005, have 5000 miles on it and have had ZERO problems with it. Its also great in the snow,I take it out just to joy ride around when the weather is really stinko, I try to get it stuck and look for the worst conditions I can find,It has not let me down yet. I also find the 2.5T engine delivers all the power I can use. My previous cars were a 2001 BMW 740I and a 2003 Lexus 430 LS and to tell the truth I dont miss either of them, the Volvo meets and exceeds all my vehical requirements and is a delight to drive.

I've read about XC90 problems but yours hit the spot and got me writing. Just had my wife's T6 serviced at 30,000. New steering rack and they wanted to replace pads AND discs on the front. I argued that surely the pads should be softer than the metal discs! Rack changed because it was steering vaguely and tightening up as the wheel was turned lock to lock. At 30k on the clock the dashboard creaks, the doors creak, the suspension crashes over bumps, the hi-fi distorts the speakers at moderate bass levels, it still steers like a ship in a gale and pulls to the left.I've just put winter tyres on it to go to the Alps (we're Brits), so there will be no improvement at all. Should have bought a BMW

My wife has a 2005 XC-90 with 30,000+ miles on it. We have had no problems with it at all. We have the 2.5T engine. It drives great and does very well for my wife who does real estate. She drives the heck out of it and it keeps on rolling. She was interested in the V8, but with what I have been reading here, I think I will tell her to keep hers for now.

I have a 2006 xc90 with a defective fuel pump. I purchased my car with 7 miles and it now has 2500 miles. My dealership is telling me my car will be out of commission until then of Jan. 2006. I'm not happy out about the time frame but I still love my SUV.
  • jccai1jccai1 Member Posts: 113
My 2005 2.5T AWD makes a clunking noise when I turn left with my foot on the brakes. I have had to make 3 trips to the dealer so far. First time they couldn't reproduce it (surprise!). Second time they installed some exhaust pipe spacer, but I heard the noise again as soon as I drove off their lot. Third time (yesterday), they replaced one of the front brake springs and lubricated the brakes. The noise hasn't recurred yet, but I'll wait a month before declaring success.

Even though the dealer's service advisor has been courteous on every occasion I took my car in (for this and other problems), their technicians seem incompetent or indifferent or both.

I have read alot of the rants against the XC90 and decided to chime in. We bought an '04 2.5T from the factory and have had some minor issues, but nothing that we keep me from buying again.

I bought this car because of safety and styling. We love the car. Sure, we took it in for a few things here and there. In fact, the company STILL does not believe me that the interior lights flicker when I turn them on. For some reason they will not do it for them. Oh well.

We have over 50k miles on it and going strong. Hopefully, now that the warranty is out, it will not dissapoint us. We would buy another Volvo in a heartbeat.

My RX-8 on the other hand....NEVER buying Mazda again because of their poor customer service and workmanship on the 8.

I have had the 2003 XC90 for over 1 year now and completed proper servicing as scheduled. I have had a Turbo go bad at about 50,000. At 72,000 I take the vehicle back to the shop because it is putting out smoke through the exhaust. Initially they tell me the other Turbo needs to be replaced and then they come back and tell me the engine is blown also. I bought the Volvo because of the quality of manufacturing and under the premise that the vehicle was going to last. How can Volvo produce a vehicle that sold for $50,000 have to have both Turbos and an engine replaced within 2 years???? Volvo's reputation has suffered. I plan on telling everyone I know about all the problems I am having and encourage them to buy ANYTHING else.

During Winter 2004 (largely in the coldest month -- February), there were a series of posts about wacky radio/CD player problems when the outside weather was cold. For example, radios refused to turn on. Radios refused to accept or cycle CD's. Radios spontaneously changed the station or CD players spontaneously skipped or backtracked among songs.

Anyone experiencing these issues this winter? Our radio, which the dealership claimed to have fixed with a "software upgrade" is again acting strangely on very cold mornings.
  • guyfguyf Member Posts: 456
Yes, mine is doing the same. Refusing to turn on on 2 occasions in very cold weather. After the car warmed up, shutting down the engine and restarting re-setted the radio. It never changed stations on it's own however.

    Hi! all,

Our 2005 XC90 2.5T AWD has had 12,000 trouble-free miles. However, the tread on its tires, Pirelli Scorpion Zero 235/65R17, does not look like going to pass the 15k miles mark. I wonder if this is normal wear for this vehicle and this model of tires? Any idea on what the mileage other owners out there got from their tires? Are there better alternatives brand/model tires when it is time to replace the tires? Any input/suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am the owner of a 2004 XC90 with 18" wheels. The original Michelin's barely made it to 27,000 miles and probably should have been replaced around 24,000 miles. The two things I heard repeatedly when shopping for new tires were 1)"The XC90 is a tire eater." and 2) "Do not buy the Pirellis."

Unfortunately those were the only two brands that make an 18" XC 90 tire. I bought the Michelins and fully expect to have to replace them before the car hits 60,000 miles.
  • hoosbesthoosbest Member Posts: 39
The Pirelli Tire wear is common. We actually only got 14K miles out of our 2004 T6. However, this is such a problem, Volvo has a program with the dealers for a free replacement if your car is under 15K miles. Check with the dealers.
  • jtlajtla Member Posts: 388
This is such a problem, Volvo has a program with the dealers for a free replacement if your car is under 15K miles.

Thanks for the information. It would be great if Volvo would replace them free of charge. I will have to make sure to go in before 15k miles. I'd assume you got yours replaced. Do you have to do it through the original dealer where you bought the vehicle, or can any Volvo dealer utilize that program for you? Thanks again.

I have a 2005 XC90 2.5T AWD. The seat and mirror memory did not work from the beginning, at least not with the key remote. The dealer could not fix this problem, so a Volvo factory engineer had to download new software to fix it. The memory settings worked fine for about 5 months or so. Now the passenger side rearview mirror is acting up again. When I try to revert back to my memory setting (from my wife's), the mirror goes haywire for about a minute or so. My concern is that this will burn out the mirror's motor. If Murphy has anything to do with it, the motor will probably burn out right after the warranty runs out. Has anyone else had a similar problem. If so, how did you resolve it?

I have a 2004 xc90 fwd. I have a similiar problem, turning right/left and clunking noise mostly over uneven payment, in/out of driveways. My car has been in the shop 10 times and they still cannot determine what it is. Replaced something in the steering, suspension, a motor mount.. it goes on and on. What was the resolution to your issue. I'm now seeking the lemon law as this has continued from 10K to now 55K, car has been in shop for over 30 days cummulative, etc. :lemon:

I have a 2004 XC90 with an oil leak that turns out to be a cracked head gasket. It has 38,000 miles. It has been at the Volvo dealer for a week, now they broke a bolt when taking it apart and will be in longer! Has any one else had this problem? I have had numerous problems with my car, starting with the brakes, worn tires at 19,000 miles which volvo replaced, now the new tires, Michelin, are worn out with 16,000 miles on them, I have had both headlights replaced because the seal was bad and moisture got in, the center counsel broke and had to be replaced, the visor split and it was replaced, now the tweeter on the window keeps falling off and is being fixed, the radio stopped working and they put in new software to fix it, the first day I had the car it would not go into reverse and had to be towed out of my garage! I am checking into the lemon law also! :lemon:

Our first set of tires (Pirelli) had to be replaced at around 10K miles. The dealer claimed to have never seen anything like it. We replaced that set with another brand, which we had to replace around 23K. We are approaching 40K miles on that set, and they aren't looking too hot. I would advise anyone buying an XC90 to budget for new tires about once a year. Ridiculous!
  • steveswife1steveswife1 Member Posts: 12
We have had a myriad of problems with our 2003 XC90. After complaining for two years :lemon: , we asked Volvo to replace the car with a new vehicle for the remainder of the lease. I even offered to accept a less expense model than an XC90. Volvo came back and offered to put us in a new lease on a new XC90 for 3 years with a lease payment that was about $40/month lower than our current lease payment. Frankly, I don't want another XC90 given our past experience and I thought the offer was extremely lame. We are now at the point of having our lawyer initiate legal action.
  • steveswife1steveswife1 Member Posts: 12
When we had this problem, we had to replace the pollen filter.
  • steveswife1steveswife1 Member Posts: 12
We did have the vibration noise from the roof problem fixed. The dealer said that there was a service bulletin related to the eurorails and fixed it. Of course the problem re-emerged about 6 months later, and we had to have it done all over again.
  • steveswife1steveswife1 Member Posts: 12
When Volvo fixed this problem on my XC90 (twice), it was covered by the warranty. The dealer shouldn't be charging you for this repair.

I have a T2.3 AWD. Thought it was the worst handling car in snow and fresh rain UNTIL I put on winter tires. The car runs quieter and handles much better than the Michelin's that came with it. Now have 70,000 Km.
The radio is still the worst in any car I have ever owned.
Apparently Volvo has a software up date for the radio and some of the other computer on board. Any one aware of this.

  • guyfguyf Member Posts: 456
What brand and model of winter tires did you install? What is the model year of your XC-90? The radio (base model) in mine (2004) is the best I've had so far.
