It is nice to see some positive information on Chevy's. I was first sold on Chevy's then I started reading all the crap that has been going wrong. So, I started looking at Fords. Now I am leaning back to Chevy's again. I really like the options and feel of the LT. Plan on ordering around September.

Remote starters are wonderful especially around now with -50 wind chills but be sure you trust the people who are instaling it. These people are going into the delicate wiring in your brand new truck! The new Chevys also have those special wires which 1 wire does the job which 10 used todo, so make sure they are competent and have experience with this type of wiring. Ive seen problems with remote starters basically because the installers didnt know what they were doing (It happened to me) :^) Anyways hope everything works out with your new starter and your truck doesnt explode when ya push the button LOL

I'd pass on a remote starter for a new Silverado Cindy....

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now has 4 Technical Service Bulletins on the 2000 Silverado. You can check them out at www.nhtsa.dot.gov Under Car Safety click on Problems & Issues and then click on Technical Service Bulletins.

Thanks for the nice encouragement but I already have the truck. Loaded 2k LS 2500 4x4 but regular cab. I love driving it and have had fewer problems than your son.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Why would anyone want that? I was out last night at 11:30pm in my tee shirt and it felt just fine. I guess it would be nice in the morning since it takes about 2 minutes for my heater to kick in. I think I'll skip the starter and just keep roughing it.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Interesting to read but what a mess. I think their computer is still suffering y2k sickness. Or some govt. employee has been having too many liquid lunches!

    guys,
real quick. last night i got my '00 LS, Z71, 4 door ext cab 1500, et al. no problems whatsoever in the first 70 or so miles i've put on it. obviously i haven't seen the change oil light yet. but here's some interesting news that i know people have been asking about.
    1. you can reprogram the daytime running lights and automatic headlamps if you don't want them on.
    2. you can reprogram the way the door locks work.
more to follow as i figure it all out...

Congrats on the new truck....tell us more as you get around to it.

    Ryan,

    I go to...lemme see...what part?....Oh...My own backyard!
    It's around Almont/Romeo...

    Deep Thought:

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed.
Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might
be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come
true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

I have had a remote starter in my last two vehicles, before they were two weeks old. I love it..in the winter I go out to a warm vehicle, in the summer, to a cool vehicle. Very reputable place, (most all the dealers use this place, also), they have done great jobs on my vehicles and all of my childrens.
Seat warmers don't help the people in the back seat, but the remote start has been very enjoyed by us..especially when traveling in the Adirondacks, when it hits the -40 wind chill! I have never run into someone who owned one, who wasn't very happy to have it!

I'd put device with such cheap electronics in my High tech Silverado wiring.

...as for rear seat passengers....you should have been quicker to ride shotgun!

My dealer initially told me that it would be 16-20 weeks to receive my truck. Now that I have an order number, what do you think the delivery time will be? Any thoughts? I suppose the dealer was just being cautious (taking into account the time waiting for the order to be accepted) about making a promise on a faster delivery.

Exactly how does the remote started work. I mean, would I have to get another remote to control the doorlocks and the starter (on the same remote) or is there an extra button on the remote that comes with the truck? About how much does a good reote starter cost? I am sure there are good brands/models and not so good brands.

they install a device in the truck which ties in with the wires that go to the ignition. In reality it is actually hot wiring the car. Usually you will always need a seperate remote to control the starter. They cost around 80-150$
  • dmr3dmr3 Member Posts: 119
For the Chevy I have now ( and the Toyaota before it), I only had the one control, because these vehicles didn't come with a control for the door locks, or the burglar alarm. I may have to have two controls when the truck comes in. I paid $139 for the last one. I can start the car from a long distance (500 feet) and they have it so the parking lights come on and the horn toots (although my daughter got on last week on her new car and her horn doesn't toot). It's great when I lose the car in the parking lot. I keep the heater on the second notch..it's runs 10 minutes while I'm getting ready, and the windshield is defrosted by the time I go out. Can't keep the rear defroster on, because on the 96 Chevy it won't stay on (it did on the 92 Toyota - which is still going strong as my sons car). If I stop to go in the store, I flick a switch twice, and keep the car running..and locked while I run in for milk..and back out to a warm car (the car holds no heat, otherwise). If someone were to break in..as soon as they touch the pedals, or the shifter, the car stalls. It needs the key to run. I love mine, as I said, the guys who put mine in have a great reputation..hard to get an appointment, because they are so busy...but we've been very pleased.

Is it hard to get the truck you want everywhere but California? I keep hearing about these long deliveries, but nearly any combination you can think of is sittin' on the lots around here. If there had been such a wait for my Z71, I might have heard about the problems and stopped delivery before I got this 30 thousand dollar vibrator.

We're thinking of getting a new Z71 to replace our Tahoe. When is the 4 door going to be showing up at lots, how much extra are they? Is the vibration problem in extenda cabs fixed yet? Thanks. HN.

Does anyone know when they begin building the 2001
Silverados. I read somewhere it is June. That
seems very early to me, but I think they arrive in
about late Aug or Sept. When could one first order a 2001? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Also posted in topic 555 by mistake.

that the remote starters should have a separate module to deal with the Passlock system. Dont completly understand what Passlock does, but it can be bypassed or a module installed. Then it can be programmed for existing remote.
Also, Viper seems to be good unit(Circuit City?), and some come with added capability like Valet parking, etc.

HNIELS: 4th door is about $300 more, but will be standard option, N/C.
  • swobigswobig Member Posts: 634
remote startes will be standard. I've always wanted one, but shyed away because of the problems I've heard of...
  • werkingwerking Member Posts: 431
    gentlemen:
scottay hit it on the head. be careful when purchasing a remote starter if you get one. according to my owners manual the PASSLOCK system on the chevy's now does the following. it requires the key to be in the ignition before it will turn on the fuel-pump-cylinder-thing (can't remember the terminology right now). if not...no fuel to the engine. obviously prevents someone from hotwiring your vehicle which hrspwigr8 stated is what a remote starter basically does. long story short...ensure you get a module to bypass the passlock system. o/w...no remote start.
hn: 4 doors should be hitting the lots soon. i just got mine friday and i love it. no vibes, etc. see my next post ref my initial impressions...

    gentlemen:
i just got a '00, 1500, LS, Z71, 4 door ext cab, with many options. (virtually everything but the heated, power, leather seats). my first impressions are as follows:

i've put over a hundred miles on it, with absolutely no complaints. solid truck, solid feel. rides more like a truck than i expected, but i also got the z71 off road package, so i'm not too disappointed. it's HUGE. thought i needed to throw that in there. the roof of my wife's altima comes up to the bottom of the windows on my truck. anyways, i had one small problem with wind noise - until i realized i had failed to completely close the door. you gotta pull pretty hard to close the doors when you get in, but once you do, you achieve remarkable silence for how large the vehicle is. i got the 5.3 L v-8, and engine noise is minimal unless you WANT to hear it - basically when you stomp on it. no complaints whatsoever though. everything i expected it would be. all four doors work very well. i understand what others were saying about open front, open rear, close front, open front, close rear, close front, etc when disembarking the vehicle in a crowded parking lot. but, i don't really care, because if that's the issue - say at a movie or something - i drop everybody off at the front before going to find a fairly remote spot to protect my vehicle. i installed a $40 (pep boys) bugflector II bug guard the day after, very simple install...5 screws and washers...no drilling. didn't cause any weird sounds when driving. had it up to 70-75 a couple times...no vibes or anything. got some sleet today, so i'm going to go test the autotrack (good excuse to do some doughnuts in the parking lot if you ask me). any questions...feel free to email me at kwerking@aol.com

if you can't tell, i love this truck!!!

The vibration problem only affected a very few (certain combination in the driveline) trucks; I believe it has been "fixed" since early to mid-1999. Mine never had it.

My 2000 1500 LT was built early July. I took delivery of it on 7/15/99. I was told it was one of the "earliest 2000" truck at the time.

I'm not sure if anyone has June "2000" truck or not though.

just wanted to say i've got a '99 silverado LS 5.3 ext-cab with about 12,000 miles & have had absolutely no problems. i had dual exhausts put on & it sounds awesome, not to mention getting 18 or 19 mpg every tank full. I love this truck!! a friend of mine owned a chevy for several years but for some insane reason he went with a ford when he bought a new one. after we compared trucks (both w/ similar options except he has leather) i was unimpressed w/ his and he was having buyers remorse and said he should have shopped a little longer. he named so many things about my truck he liked better and i didn't say a word...just a big SMILE :-)
  • mprince3mprince3 Member Posts: 6
PEWTER FLARES ARE EXACTLY WHAT I WAS WANTING.
  • EpaminondasEpaminondas Member Posts: 6
What good do dual exhausts do other than to give it a taste of tinkling cymbals and sounding brass? Additionally, where and how do I have them installed if I want them for my rig when it comes in?

Valve stems leaking and/or blowing out? My folks had this problem on their van with alloy wheels until they found out that the wheel brushes at the car wash they use was the culprit. They watched their van going through and saw the brushes whipping the valve stems all around. Since they stopped using that car wash, no more bad valve stems.

After driving around for a couple of days with the tire pressure at 50 all-around, I realized that this was it! The front should have been at 50 all along - BESTt ride, handles a bad road like a charm. I even noticed a difference when on the wavy groovy-highways of Illinois that 50 does handle better than 40 or 45! I will adjust the rears when needed. Thanks!

When I called about the remote starter, the guy did ask me if I had the passlock system, I told him yes, and he noted that he would need to bypass it. He also mentioned they used Viper brand, and that if I wanted to (which I didn't) I could have the power locks and the remote starter incorporated into one controller (more $$).

So, I understand what you say, Tim, about messing with the Silverado wiring. I still have been deliberating this - but when I got up this morning, it was -8 (not windchill, mind you). And my husband leaves an hour before I do, otherwise I WOULD make him start the truck for me. He does brush it off, though.

We got into a debate about the snow brush he just bought, though. (We debate...er.. argue about almost everything). I say with the stiff bristles you could scratch the clear coat if you use it to brush the snow off the truck, he said he doubts it. I said, the people who make snow brushes don't give a darn about your new truck. What do you think? I didn't think it was worth it to find out the hard way.

Hey, let's cover all the bases here, OK?

    99 1500 reg cab 4x4 long bed 4.8 5speed 4.10

New record low fuel economy last tank. 7.7 MPG. Towed my 5,000 lb travel trailer from PHX to Flagstaff, up and down ranging from 1,000 ft elevation to 7,000 ft elevation. Tryed to go 75 everywhere I could. Ran in 3rd gear for about 20 minutes at around 4,600 rpm. No change in the coolant temp gauge.

Usually get around 16 to 17 running short trips here in Flagstaff.

Headed to Yellowstone for a week long snowmobile trip. Will be running unloaded around 60 to 56 mph and will probably put some 0W-30 Mobil 1 in it as I will be parked outside for about a week in temps as low as -20 or worse. This should be a new best fuel economy record.

Still think yawl are running your tires too high most of the time. I'm currently running E range studded tires, drop the rears down as low as 28 in ice and snow for best traction. Still not much bulge at that pressure on a 1/2 ton. Run around 50 to 55 psi when towing fully loaded. Will make the Yellowstone run with 40 in the front and 35 in the rear.

Tim, got underneath and looked at my rattling transfer case shift linkage, looks like a really easy fix to quiet it down. Thanks for the heads up.

Oh ya, call me a dumb***, have been running 89 or 92 octane since the last memory flash as I thought it was still occasionally pinging. It was the transfer case shift linkage. If you suspect ping, reach down and put a little load on the transfer case shifter, if the noise goes away, it ain't ping!

I don't think any snow brush I have ever seen in the last 33 years is paint friendly?

They all do damage to the paint....the darker the color...the more haze you will notice. Good thing i didn't get the darkest color you could!..DOHHH!!

I'm lucky to park indoors at home...but do get covered while at work. I just use the brush for the windows and let the rest blow off. I know this is not nice to the people behind you...but oh well...it doesn't last for that long.

Black and dark colors show haze marks too easy...and I'll be damned if some cheapee brush is going to touch my paint.

    To each his own.

Would the brush actually ruin the paint??....I doubt it. Just make more marks you have to polish out.

After a long wait, I'm told my y2k 1500 LS 2wd 4dr 5.3 loaded Silverado was built Friday (wish it would have been built NOT Fri or Mon). They're saying it was built in Winsville, MO (never heard of that plant) Anyone have any input on that plant. Now they say 3-10 days checking it out before shipping. Then on to my dealer in Calif. Maybe I'll have it by mid-Feb???
Re: $500 coupon, I'm still looking for one. I filled out the brochure request on GM webpage indicating iminent purchase, so hope they shoot me out one.
It is great to hear about those of you who have theirs and have NO problems. Thanks to all for the useful info.
  • scottayscottay Member Posts: 91
My truck sounds the same as yours, was built 05 Jan. Told the same 10 day story, got a VIN # around the 12th of Jan. Give 14 days to ship to So Cal, expected around 19th. Then the dealer says it shipped 17 Jan from PONTIAC????(whats it doing there? they only make 'em in IN. and Canada)....another 14days. So I expect to pick it up 05 Feb.

A nice person forwarded me their $500 coupon, which is transferable, but their address was on it, and they are from Tenn.!

On the bright side, I did recieve a coupon from GM! I indicated interest in a purchase recently, thats probably why I got one. As posted earlier, you get choice of maintenance plan, extended warranty, or $500 off.

Would anybody choose the warranty over the $500?

    -scott
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
If you could get the warranty for free...take it over $500.
Chances are you will never need it...hence you got nothing from GM. Or take the $500....you know will get something for sure.

    Up to you
