    All,

the TRD packages come with a skid plate (and tank protector). That is the black cover that most of you see. The OPTIONAL skid plate is a different thing. It is silver aluminum and is an accessory by itself that can be added to any Taco, it is not a package option. The accessory (silver) plate is the one that has the vibration issue. I'll post a picture of it (and the crack mine developed) later today.

    Hope that tid bit helps!

Engineerboo, thanks for the list. I've been trying to find something complete, and each site seems to pick and choose which options to list - of course toyota has this disclaimer that packages vary region to region, so that may be why none are very complete.

I just wish they offered the off road package with the hood scoop (fashion never function), I think I'll hold out till next years model and see what they offer - and hope they fix the problems that seem to be consistently listed here on this forum.

Do you have the picture of the skid plate on the silver truck? I bought a silver with TRD sport package and wanted to install one. Read about wind noice and vibration on the earlier forum and wanted to know if this is the Toyota skid plate they are referring to. Any advice is welcome.
By the way So. California has been raining for the past week, no leak problem yet. Production is 2/05.

As both of your trucks have had a leak repair done, can either of you please post a picture(s) of where Toyota added seam sealer? That's if it can be seen. I'd truly appreciate it. I'm guessing others are also very curious. TIA!

trailrunner10-I have tried to get my 05 to leak by using a garden hose on the windshield area and so far cannot detect a leak. Did yours leak from the car wash because of "top-down" water pressure or did it come from underneath the truck from a car wash with pressure wash under the truck? Or is there anyway to know?
I will take mine through a car wash soon but wanted to know if I am wasting my time with the garden hose technique. I am in the mountains of Colorado so it does not rain here until May/June.

Every time I am ready to order my 4D LB TRD 4 4x4 v6 automatic, I read more on this board and I start to become hesitant again. I have test drove 2 of them and so far am pleased but this leak problem knawls at my gut.

If I knew for sure that they have solved the problem of the leak and knocks and could get the gas milage that I hope to get I would order it.

Maybe I should throw caution into the wind?

But at 30,000 + that is a big risk.

Still love everything about the truck but do not want a thorn in my side.

I understand how you feel I would feel the same way, I have a dbl ca v6 auto made in 01/05 and i have no leak or any other problems after 1000 miles if you have the 3yr/36000 mile factory warrant at least so if any thing goes wrong with they fix it for free, I am very pleased with the truck i got, i am glad i made the choice of the 05 taco, just thought i would throw my 2 cents in for word of encouragement.

My '05 CC LB TRD Sport was built 9/8/04. I put it through the car wash once a week. Because of the snow and salted roads I have the under carriage rinse done also. Because I'm aware of the leak issue, I also check under the rug afterward by removing the sill and feeling under the padding. So far no leaks. Maybe I've been lucky.

Have had my dbl cab/lngBed/4x4 for two weeks now. I have two leaks, one from the hoodscoop the other from my lower extremities each time I drive this baby! First Toy. Very impressed so far. Also would like for the service guy to make my keyfob chirp! He says no problem. Good luck un your decision. This is my 14th truck, it is one of the finest!!

Finally got a call from dealer today saying my truck(silver D/C, shortbed, trd offroad #2, steps)is in the port. I ordered this in early December. Should be 5-7 more days....I hope!!! Have not seen any posts from someone who has the hood protector installed? I have it on my 2003 d/c that I am trading and it blends well. Anyone know how the 2005 looks? I think it protects the hood a little bit better........Thanks....

    [Skid Plate]

Nope, I don't have the silver one. I guess, that the silver one is an "accessory," and does not come with any package, from what we've read here. It doesn't bother me that much, as I don't plan to do too much off-roading, hence the TRD Sport, instead of the Off-Road.

    [Leaks]

It's interesting that you mention the hood scoop leak. I raised the hood the other day to show some people the engine compartment, and noticed that there were dry dirt spots on the top cover of the engine. While it didn't look like a lot of water got in, you could tell that it had to come from the top of the hood to get where it was. I'm not sure this is really an issue, because the spark plugs are on the side of the engine, unlike my Honda 4 banger, where the plugs are on the top, where a water leak would be a serious issue.

sbsyncro - Hey. I'm in San Diego, and have had my DC LB TRD Sport Pre-Runner for about a month now. You seem to know a lot about them...the only thing I know is that I couldn't get the Off-Road pkg in the LB - if I wanted the LB, I had to get the Sport, which of course comes with that non-functional hood scoop thingy that I originally hated but now actually kind of like. My questions for you or anyone else in the know: 1) I didn't get the skid plate. Was I supposed to? 2) I don't have the button for the LSD...do I still have it? Thanks!

    Chiefman1:

I went back to check the window sticker that came with my Taco. The skidplate was added (I mistakenly thought it was part of a package). Skidplate is option "SO". I bought the truck off the lot and would not have ordered the skidplate for an additional $199. My truck came with the "PT" package (TRD Sport Package #2).

    Hi Captmike:

If your service guy gets your fob to chirp, please let us on the forum know how he did it. I thought you had to buy the optional more expensive security system to get that feature.

    Hammaa:

The upgraded silver skid plate is option "SO". Check the window sticker that came with your truck. It is an extra and is not part of a package.

As I understand it, the LSD operates automatically with the Sport Package.

I have the '05 Tacoma dealer phamplet in front of me,..it lists...

Front skid plate... standard on the Regular Cab, Access Cab and Double Cab for the PreRunner/4x4...

    now the difference...

Engine Skid plate...Standard on Regular Cab PreRunner/4x4 and available only as a package on the Access Cab and Double Cab.

    Mystery Solved.

    1) I'm not sure about the skid plate - There seems to be two variations when people talk about "skid plates" - one is the main one that is bolted to the undercarriage and made of black painted steel. The other is more cosmetic and made of aluminum (pretty much useless for real protection, IMO). I'll bet the aluminum one only comes with the TRD Offroad. You can add them aftermarket, though

    2) LSD only comes on the TRD Offroad units, which are not offered on the 4x4 double cabs in California. Yours (TRD Sport) has the Limited Slip as long as it is either PY, PM, or PK (the only ones offered AFAIK). They are also known as TRD Sport #1, #3, and #4 respectively. The differences are: #1 does not have auto dimming mirror or tow package, #3 doesn't inlcude tow package but has auto dim mirror, and #4 has all the goodies.

I started putting together a spreadsheet with all the options available for California. You can download it here:

    http://members.cox.net/bpchristensen/Tacoma.xls

I got most of the data by correlating information from various sources including toyota's web site, Intellichoice, and Fightingchance.com It really helps. If anyone has comments or personal experience that conflicts with any of the information, let me know and I can update the spreadsheet and repost it to the web

vmiman,I have a dc trd sport 2wd,no skid plate.I was just responding earlier to a post made by geogecko.Do you think there should be one on 2wd? I'm not really concerned about it,I'm not sure I would like the looks of it anyway. Thanks for the info.

Ush00z, I had the exact same noise with my DC SB prerunner (4x2) with the TRD sport package #2. The popping noise sounded like a popcorn machine in my suspension and was much more noticeable on cold and dry days. It was common when I was just driving over potholes at say 30 - 40mph, but I didn't hear it every time I hit a bump. I originally heard it on only the passenger side, but then heard it later on the driver's side as well.

My dealer (who has been very helpful actually) initially replaced the lower control arm which did absolutely nothing-noise was still there. I gave them the info from this forum regarding the cab mounts, but they said they didn't think it was that-that it was a suspension issue (they heard the pop/rattle as well). Then last week, I took it back in and they replaced the following parts of the suspension:

    Link (part # 48810-04010)
    Link (part # 48820-04020)
    Bushing x 2 (part # 48815-AD030)
    Brackett (part #48829-04010)
    Brackett (part #48824-04020)

And now I am happy to report that I hear absolutely NO rattle whatsover). It is absolutely silent over any and all bumps at all speeds. We have actually had a cold/dry spell here in Atlanta and it is still quiet. I hope this helps those of you with this same issue.

Also, I have 2800 miles, have NO other problems (leaks, etc.) and have found that my gas mileage has actually gone up about 1-2mpg...maybe the engine is getting worn it?
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
They actually didn't find a leak on my truck, despite the drivers side floorboard being wet. It dried out and I haven't had any problems since. I have no idea what happened. Apparently, the water was very clean and they were ruling out the possibility of an outside water leak into the cabin. I am going to be watching it closely.

In regards to the 6 speed, has anyone powershifted in one yet? Toyota claimed sub 7 second 0-60 times in the X-Runner, so speed shifting had to be happening. I am very confident that I can hit about the 7 second mark myself. Also, I am curious if 2nd gear will go to 60 mph. I am going to find this stuff out soon if noone else does...time to have some fun.

Also, it would be nice if someone has one of those g-force(?) devices that determines quarter mile, 0-60, horsepower, etc and could post any info on the forum.
  • xsactaxsacta Member Posts: 26
    leob1,

I hope you don't have a problem. However, the clean water/dirty water theory sounds like pure BS to me. Matter of fact I'd bet on it. Good luck and please post an update.

Get the Taco you won't regret it. I had the leak and the vibrating skid plate and I still LOVE this truck 3 months and 5000 miles later!

xsacta - I will try to see if I can get pics tomorrow if the windchill isn't still 5 degrees!

I had some problems with my seat covers also - the black and grey with TRD badge on seat back. On drivers side I had to shorten the plastic tube. On the passenger side I removed the tube altogether. The tube was 2 pieces on the passenger side for some reason.
  • hammaahammaa Member Posts: 79
sbsyncro - Thanks for the info. I don't really want the large awkward aluminum skid plate, but if I was supposed to have it, I thought maybe I could sell it on ebay or something and at least make a buck. The world may never know the difference, and if your dealer experiences are anything like mine, I guarantee you that noone at the dealership can shed any light on the subject. Regarding the LSD, I have TRD Sport pkg "PK", with the tow package. I DON'T have the button...is that bad?
  • az comaaz coma Member Posts: 19
Not sure if it was toyota "authorized". The service manager had the same popping sound and they sent both trucks to a body shop to perform the work. The foam insulation is fairly soft so I don't know how long it'll stay quiet but it's dead quiet now going over bumps.

Sorry had to correct the pics!

Here is a picture of the hood protector, It is the Wade brand. The pic does it no justice, it does look really nice. Got it off ebay from greatpartsguy I think.

Here is a pic of the accessory (aluminum) skid plate:

Lastly here is a pic of the crack that developed in my skidplate. The crack is actually horizontal despite the angle of the pic.

    Gymbo:

Not sure. I believe though, that it is not part of a package. I think you have to order it as option "SO". Unless you do some serious off-roading, I'm not sure it's worth the extra weight (decreased gas mileage) and money ($199)that it costs.

Nice looking truck (like the color!).

Did you hit something with the skid plate? I find it hard to believe a piece of 1/4" aluminum is cracking like that on it's own?
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Oh, the computer at home is now working...

This guy installed, 3" Revteck Suspension lift with 285/70R17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain Tires, 2/10" less than 33" tires!

Nice looking truck. Lots of mods. Has a dash kit installed, althought I'm not sure where he got it.

djwtarheel,I have the popping noise on driver's front side, from previous post I assumed it was the cab mounts;now with your repair actually being in the suspension,I'm back to square one.
I was hoping there would be a common repair before I take mine in.I guess I will have to take my chances, but I sure dont like to have parts changed if it doesn't fix the problem. Thanks for keeping us informed.
  • coldfootcoldfoot Member Posts: 49
This is the only vehicle I have had this problem with other than a bad thermostat. The problem with mine is the piece that opens the door to let hot air in cab is broken. No defrost at all. Dealer tried to epoxy the piece together for a temporary fix but that didnt work. Toyota has been saying there is no part # for the broken part. Today they said it should be at the dealership in a week. This piece broke 3 hours after I purchased the truck on 12/10/04. Been this long trying to get it fixed. They have the cab gutted. Entire dash gauges and center consol is out. Been like this over 1 month. The 05 Dakota they are renting me has a great heater but passenger door wont open from inside. Was in a 05 F-150 but seatbelt broke in it. Havent been in a 05 yet that something was not wrong with it.

    ush00z,

how is the truck running on regular grade? Have you tried it on any hills?
  • 3tacoma3tacoma Member Posts: 15
I just bought a house and the roof is leaking, the A/C is making a popping sound, my electric bill is alot higher than the sticker said, the paint on the walls are discolored, the alarm is not working right, the slab is cracked, and I paid way more than I should have.

Boy, I'm sure glad my 05 Tacoma is in the driveway.

georgecko - Nope didn't hit anything. Just went to work one day and noticed it was vibrating more than normal, got so mad I went to take it off and was like what the heck..it's cracked! Not sure if you can tell from the pic, but not a single scratch or dent on the plate just the crack. From what I hear on other forums, apparently cast aluminum cracks eisier..I personally don't know. Oh well, waiting on a new one from Yota so I am happy with that.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
That guy's truck has been floating around on a lot of forums. Nice truck, but heck it was all I could do to buy my truck let alone have the $$$ to do all that stuff to it so soon! Must be nice! :-)
  • ush00zush00z Member Posts: 30
I haven't refilled the current 87 octane tank yet, but looking at what's left and how many miles it's driven, it may have been worse than the first. I'm not sure what fuel grade the first was.

I live in a hilly area. Maybe that's why I'm recording worse than normal MPG. My wife has been driving it mostly, and she uses the brakes a lot.
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
    [Someone Else's Truck]

You'll have to ask the owner of that truck about the antenna install. It's not mine...it's nice though.

    [Cracked Skid Plate]

You know, I thought about that later, and went back and looked at the picture, and thought, well, there doesn't seem to be any other damage on it though...

I think you are probably right. Cast aluminum would be a little more brittle than just plain old aluminum. If it wasn't cast, it would probably be way too soft to be a skid plate.

    [Broken Heater]
I'd be seriously seeing what you could do about getting a new vehicle. If I walked into the service area, and saw my brand new Taco in pieces like that, I'd demand it, and if that didn't work, I'd go to Toyota about it, and if that didn't work, I'd consider getting a lawyer.

I'm sorry, but on a vehicle that new, you can't expect that everything will get put back together correctly...I really wonder if they even use a torque wrench on all the bolts, screws, and nuts that they are about to have to reinstall. It may be okay right when you get it back, but in a while, you may have something start making noise or something come loose...

I'm not sure I understand why they have all the gauges out and what not. I could understand if they had to take the entire dash out, but to disassemble the entire dash itself?

At least they have been paying for a rental. I'd tell them you want an '05 Taco though, since that's what you bought. Heck, tell them to trade yours for a new one, and when they get the other truck fixed, they can use it as a rental!

I'm sorry to hear that. Keep us posted on how things are going.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I agree with georgecko 100% it is time for you to demand a new truck!
  • 4runnerrip4runnerrip Member Posts: 24
Okay let's start to agree that the '05 Tacoma (1st model year) is (somewhat) cursed and far from the usual Toyota standards. No finger pointing, it's just the way things worked out.

As for myself, if you may remember I am the one whom emailed 62 dealers in the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto corridor looking for a red-dcab-6speed to no avail. Dealers are still emailing me back, they're trying to accomodate me; they're trying to get me in to order one, but the bottom line is still: nobody has one. Even if I do order one, those dealers I pressed for a definitive delivery date could make no promises.

So I will most probably wait for the '06. It will be a long and painful wait, but probably worth while in the long run.

Cheers & best of luck everyone.

I've got a new topic for you guys. I've noticed that at extended periods of time stopped in the truck (long lights, traffic jambs, etc.) that at some point I'll find the brakes start to cut loose and the truck inching forward. If I push down harder on the pedal I stop again, but it got me wondering... Not sure if it's a truck or driver problem, but I can't imagine my foot habits are any different in the Taco than any other car I've driven.

Anybody else notice the same thing?
  • hobohobo Member Posts: 27
I was about to post about the brake issue too. It doesn't happen all the time, but every once in a while, it will seem that the brakes let go when I'm at a stop. I thought it was me not having my foot down on the brake solidly, but now there's evidence of it being a bigger problem?
  • bjw1bjw1 Member Posts: 152
I too had that problem, not all the time but noticed that when i was fooling around with my cd while at a light, at first i thought it was me but after reading your post regarding this issue makes me wounder, thats why i put in park when ever i am going to do something, wouder if that has to do with brakes over heating or something, well i hope nothinggoes wrong with anybodys taco, with this
  • sbsyncrosbsyncro Member Posts: 66
That sounds like a classic example of a leaky brake hydraulic system. Somewhere the pressure is leaking out of the brake system and allowing the braking mechanisms to "relax" their hold on the brake surface.

Sometimes this can be induced by vacuum leaks, an excessively high idle speed (in automatics), or improperly adjusted brakes.

Just out of curiosity, do all of you experiencing this problem have automatics? Has anyone had this problem with a manual? Does it happen when the truck has warmed up and the idle speed dropped to normal?
  • bjw1bjw1 Member Posts: 152
yes, i do have a auto trans, its nothing extremely important,(not safety hazard as of right now), so when i go in for first oil change i will mentioned it to the service manager, or do you think i should go in now as for further damage to something? you imput is welcome.
