the TRD packages come with a skid plate (and tank protector). That is the black cover that most of you see. The OPTIONAL skid plate is a different thing. It is silver aluminum and is an accessory by itself that can be added to any Taco, it is not a package option. The accessory (silver) plate is the one that has the vibration issue. I'll post a picture of it (and the crack mine developed) later today.
Hope that tid bit helps!
I just wish they offered the off road package with the hood scoop (fashion never function), I think I'll hold out till next years model and see what they offer - and hope they fix the problems that seem to be consistently listed here on this forum.
Do you have the picture of the skid plate on the silver truck? I bought a silver with TRD sport package and wanted to install one. Read about wind noice and vibration on the earlier forum and wanted to know if this is the Toyota skid plate they are referring to. Any advice is welcome.
By the way So. California has been raining for the past week, no leak problem yet. Production is 2/05.
Bacolod
I will take mine through a car wash soon but wanted to know if I am wasting my time with the garden hose technique. I am in the mountains of Colorado so it does not rain here until May/June.
If I knew for sure that they have solved the problem of the leak and knocks and could get the gas milage that I hope to get I would order it.
Maybe I should throw caution into the wind?
But at 30,000 + that is a big risk.
Still love everything about the truck but do not want a thorn in my side.
Nope, I don't have the silver one. I guess, that the silver one is an "accessory," and does not come with any package, from what we've read here. It doesn't bother me that much, as I don't plan to do too much off-roading, hence the TRD Sport, instead of the Off-Road.
[Leaks]
It's interesting that you mention the hood scoop leak. I raised the hood the other day to show some people the engine compartment, and noticed that there were dry dirt spots on the top cover of the engine. While it didn't look like a lot of water got in, you could tell that it had to come from the top of the hood to get where it was. I'm not sure this is really an issue, because the spark plugs are on the side of the engine, unlike my Honda 4 banger, where the plugs are on the top, where a water leak would be a serious issue.
I went back to check the window sticker that came with my Taco. The skidplate was added (I mistakenly thought it was part of a package). Skidplate is option "SO". I bought the truck off the lot and would not have ordered the skidplate for an additional $199. My truck came with the "PT" package (TRD Sport Package #2).

If your service guy gets your fob to chirp, please let us on the forum know how he did it. I thought you had to buy the optional more expensive security system to get that feature.

The upgraded silver skid plate is option "SO". Check the window sticker that came with your truck. It is an extra and is not part of a package.
As I understand it, the LSD operates automatically with the Sport Package.

Front skid plate... standard on the Regular Cab, Access Cab and Double Cab for the PreRunner/4x4...
now the difference...
Engine Skid plate...Standard on Regular Cab PreRunner/4x4 and available only as a package on the Access Cab and Double Cab.
Mystery Solved.
Griff
2) LSD only comes on the TRD Offroad units, which are not offered on the 4x4 double cabs in California. Yours (TRD Sport) has the Limited Slip as long as it is either PY, PM, or PK (the only ones offered AFAIK). They are also known as TRD Sport #1, #3, and #4 respectively. The differences are: #1 does not have auto dimming mirror or tow package, #3 doesn't inlcude tow package but has auto dim mirror, and #4 has all the goodies.

I got most of the data by correlating information from various sources including toyota's web site, Intellichoice, and Fightingchance.com It really helps. If anyone has comments or personal experience that conflicts with any of the information, let me know and I can update the spreadsheet and repost it to the web
My dealer (who has been very helpful actually) initially replaced the lower control arm which did absolutely nothing-noise was still there. I gave them the info from this forum regarding the cab mounts, but they said they didn't think it was that-that it was a suspension issue (they heard the pop/rattle as well). Then last week, I took it back in and they replaced the following parts of the suspension:
Link (part # 48810-04010)
Link (part # 48820-04020)
Bushing x 2 (part # 48815-AD030)
Brackett (part #48829-04010)
Brackett (part #48824-04020)
And now I am happy to report that I hear absolutely NO rattle whatsover). It is absolutely silent over any and all bumps at all speeds. We have actually had a cold/dry spell here in Atlanta and it is still quiet. I hope this helps those of you with this same issue.
Also, I have 2800 miles, have NO other problems (leaks, etc.) and have found that my gas mileage has actually gone up about 1-2mpg...maybe the engine is getting worn it?
In regards to the 6 speed, has anyone powershifted in one yet? Toyota claimed sub 7 second 0-60 times in the X-Runner, so speed shifting had to be happening. I am very confident that I can hit about the 7 second mark myself. Also, I am curious if 2nd gear will go to 60 mph. I am going to find this stuff out soon if noone else does...time to have some fun.
Also, it would be nice if someone has one of those g-force(?) devices that determines quarter mile, 0-60, horsepower, etc and could post any info on the forum.
I hope you don't have a problem. However, the clean water/dirty water theory sounds like pure BS to me. Matter of fact I'd bet on it. Good luck and please post an update.
Nope, you're good - locker does NOT come on the Sportpackages. Check that spreadsheet I posted the link to, it will explain everything.

Here is a picture of the hood protector, It is the Wade brand. The pic does it no justice, it does look really nice. Got it off ebay from greatpartsguy I think.
Here is a pic of the accessory (aluminum) skid plate:
Lastly here is a pic of the crack that developed in my skidplate. The crack is actually horizontal despite the angle of the pic.
Not sure. I believe though, that it is not part of a package. I think you have to order it as option "SO". Unless you do some serious off-roading, I'm not sure it's worth the extra weight (decreased gas mileage) and money ($199)that it costs.

Did you hit something with the skid plate? I find it hard to believe a piece of 1/4" aluminum is cracking like that on it's own?
This guy installed, 3" Revteck Suspension lift with 285/70R17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain Tires, 2/10" less than 33" tires!
Nice looking truck. Lots of mods. Has a dash kit installed, althought I'm not sure where he got it.

I was hoping there would be a common repair before I take mine in.I guess I will have to take my chances, but I sure dont like to have parts changed if it doesn't fix the problem. Thanks for keeping us informed.
how is the truck running on regular grade? Have you tried it on any hills?
Boy, I'm sure glad my 05 Tacoma is in the driveway.
Bacolod
I live in a hilly area. Maybe that's why I'm recording worse than normal MPG. My wife has been driving it mostly, and she uses the brakes a lot.
You'll have to ask the owner of that truck about the antenna install. It's not mine...it's nice though.
[Cracked Skid Plate]
You know, I thought about that later, and went back and looked at the picture, and thought, well, there doesn't seem to be any other damage on it though...
I think you are probably right. Cast aluminum would be a little more brittle than just plain old aluminum. If it wasn't cast, it would probably be way too soft to be a skid plate.
[Broken Heater]
I'd be seriously seeing what you could do about getting a new vehicle. If I walked into the service area, and saw my brand new Taco in pieces like that, I'd demand it, and if that didn't work, I'd go to Toyota about it, and if that didn't work, I'd consider getting a lawyer.
I'm sorry, but on a vehicle that new, you can't expect that everything will get put back together correctly...I really wonder if they even use a torque wrench on all the bolts, screws, and nuts that they are about to have to reinstall. It may be okay right when you get it back, but in a while, you may have something start making noise or something come loose...
I'm not sure I understand why they have all the gauges out and what not. I could understand if they had to take the entire dash out, but to disassemble the entire dash itself?
At least they have been paying for a rental. I'd tell them you want an '05 Taco though, since that's what you bought. Heck, tell them to trade yours for a new one, and when they get the other truck fixed, they can use it as a rental!
I'm sorry to hear that. Keep us posted on how things are going.
As for myself, if you may remember I am the one whom emailed 62 dealers in the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto corridor looking for a red-dcab-6speed to no avail. Dealers are still emailing me back, they're trying to accomodate me; they're trying to get me in to order one, but the bottom line is still: nobody has one. Even if I do order one, those dealers I pressed for a definitive delivery date could make no promises.
So I will most probably wait for the '06. It will be a long and painful wait, but probably worth while in the long run.
Cheers & best of luck everyone.
Ian
Anybody else notice the same thing?
Sometimes this can be induced by vacuum leaks, an excessively high idle speed (in automatics), or improperly adjusted brakes.
Just out of curiosity, do all of you experiencing this problem have automatics? Has anyone had this problem with a manual? Does it happen when the truck has warmed up and the idle speed dropped to normal?
