>I've been told by my dealer that if I use an oil filter other than toyota, it will void my warranty. However I'm not certain if this is true. also don.t use wix filters, they really suck<>
That's illegal unless they will provide the filter. Only if they could prove that an aftermarket filter was the direct cause of a problem, then they could refuse to pay for that repair.
Has anyone used the the adjustable bed tie-downs to hold a motorcycle? I'm a little nervous about doing it and would rather use hooks like the ones in the back of the bed. Has anyone installed any aftermarket tie downs to the bed? Thanks!
>I hope that you're right!! The reason that I ask is because Motor Trend's "Truck Trend" March/April issue (page 40) states that ".... those without the offroad package offer a system that uses the ABS to simulate a limited-slip differential..."<>
That's the "Auto LSD" only available on some models.
Blackmamba is right about aftermarket speakers. You really need an amp (or aftermarket head unit) for them to sound well. The factory (non-JBL) system only pumps out less than 20 watts per channel. Most aftermarket speakers need much more than this.
He is also right in that anything larger than an 8" (or a MAYBE a small fitting 10") will require some fabrication unless they were just sitting on the floor behing the front seats, but that would defeat the purpose. Get a high quality 8" and an amp and you should be pleased with the sound. Even more pleased if you decide to change to an aftermarket head unit once the dash kits come out.
blackmamba - Would love to see some pics of your setup, especially the sub. This is on my list of mods to do after the exhaust, grille, tires, running boards...etc. You get the point. What an expensive hobby buying this truck is! :-)
Car makers don't make their own oil filters, so sticking to "oem only" just means they charge you more for a purolator (or similar brand). If they make a Motorcraft filter for your vehicle, look at the inside. The one for my Ranger is a Pure One ($6) with Motorcraft on the outside that I get for $3. It's a steal.
My Ranger (95) also has the thick, orange peel paint along the bottom. I thought this was standard on most trucks; it's certainly not a defect or anything that I would worry about.
Has anyone got any info on resale value and having your oil changed at the dealer? I hate to invest about $30 for each oil change when I can do it at home with full synthetic for about the same or less...considering I buy a lower priced synthetic(like supertech). I stay clear of the quick lube places, they don't care about our trucks and use low quality filters.
By the way, I still have not found a leak on my truck, even driving in heavy rain(still watching though)...it's possible that the dealers detail shop soaked the floorboard from a quick steam clean right before I bought it. A rubber mat may have kept it wet as a result.
I have really enjoyed my PreRunner. It satisfies my desire for off road ruggedness with nearly sports car acceleration.
I have a 2001 tacoma with off road package and I'm looking at a 2005 with the off road. I keep hearing about the paint chipping. This is not a new issue on the 05 model trucks, my 01 had the same problem until I fixed it. I bet no one is having this problem behind the rear wheels... just the front. The way I fixed mine was to extend the front flaps out and down. If you will take a 8 or 10 foot piece of rope and lay it down the same direction of the truck and pull your truck onto the end of the rope so it is just under the outside of one of your front tires, get out of the truck and grab the other end of the rope and hold it up (this will show you the path that any rocks or dirt that you run over will take) if you modify you flaps so that the rope will not come up to the body panels without touching the mud flap there will be no more chips. It may be a little different for the 05 model but the principle will be the same. On my 01 the front flaps kind of lay back at highway speeds so you have to allow for this.. I hope this makes sense...I know what I'm talking about but its hard to put into words LOL Try this and see if you can stop the chipped paint.
That line that the dealer told you is b.s. all you have to to do is change the oil and filter at the 3-5k mile intervals and a recipet with the vin#, miles and date and you are still covered with the warranty, that is just a ploy to get you to go to the dealer instead of like walmart who in most cases is much less.
I hear it also on my V6 access cab occassionally. Most of the time no noise unless it is over an especially rough area. Don't hear it when my wife is in the passenger seat. Sounds like a cup rattling in a cup holder.
I've checked the seatbelts, the storage door and areas. I've shaken the cab. Only thing I can find is the top of the rail (plastic part) is a little loose. Could that be it?
The article is quite informative. However, lest we think the author is utterly incapable of any bias on any topic, this quote is from the article...
"Since "Big Oil" is in bed with the un-elected president in the U.S., don't expect any action of lower sulphur fuel for a while in the United States. If Al Gore is re-elected in 2004, and the Supremes don't simply ignore the election results again, then there is a chance for lower sulphur fuel in the U.S. beginning in 2005."
Not trying to start a political flame war, merely saying that we should all do our own homework. Welcome advice like this, yes, but we shouldn't automatically believe everything we come across on the Net is correct, even when stated authoritatively.
If you look in the 05 Tacoma brochure (the red booklet) you will see the various wheels. I have the wheel labeled "E" and described as "Available 16-in. alloy wheel (standard with TRD Off-Road Package)" I suspect this is what you are referring to as the brushed rims. I personally don't think they look at all cheap, but that is simply a matter of taste I suppose.
I have bought many filters for the T100 and even at the dealer they were under $5. Fram makes about 4 price levels of oil filters and I have used them all. I feel better getting Toyota parts if they are better, but if the aftermarket parts are better...get them. I would never buy anything but Bilstein shocks/struts. I have been buying them for all of my vehicels since 1980.
I have changed my own oil for one heck of a long time (decades). It has no bearing on the resale value unless you wait until it looks like pine tar or ignore the manufacturer's requirements. Besides, the dealers hire kids to do the work and pay them a few bucks an hour just like Valvoline or Mr. Oil. The difference is in what you are willing to pay to have it done.
What a bummer to see the 4 tie-downs launched into space and you look in your rear view mirror to see 2 miles of nuts and bolts that used to be your motorcycle!
I Installed a K&N filter in my truck. The truck seems to be a little more peppy than before. Engine noise picked up a bit. also, I bought a cheap mod on ebay that places a resistor in place of the IAT sensor. Whats everyones opinion on this. has anyone ever used this before. Looks like i wont be installing this unless someone out there has had sucess out of this. 2005 toyota tacoma 4.0
vmiman: Yes, it has 2 locks in the rear, on both corners. (Which also prevent the unlockable tailgate from being opened.)
They used the existing railing to mount the 2 gas struts and for the plate where the locks lock into but they did have to put a couple screws in both to secure it. I uploaded some new photos of the mounts on my webpage: (http://www.cardomain.com/id/engineerboo)
I got it from A&A Toppers in Littleton...they have a nice shop and installation was free.
Finally got my truck back today after 56 days at the dealership. [non-permissible content removed] on blend door was broken. Took Toyota 3 months to provide the part to dealer. Today is first time since I purchased truck on 12/10/04 that heater put out heat.I was beginning to think that heat WAS an option.
Has anyone figured out an easy way to install an aftermarket radio on the 2005 Tacoma? Does anyone know of a bracket made to hold a standard sony or JVC aftermarket radio/cd player ?
Reading all of the postings, there is not bracket made to install an aftermarket radio at the moment but here is a great sight that will probably have it as soon as it comes out.http://www.river-oaks-car-stereo.com/wires/ Going back to the installation of subwoofers, I think that it is possible to install a pair of 12 inch subs in the 2005 DC Tacoma. What I am planning on doing is removing the rear compartments from behind the seats of my DC Prerunner and making a custom box for two 12s. I will probably go with the mini CDTs which are great for small enclosures and are suppost to be some of the best subs according to the reviews.
Here are my pictures of my 2005 Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed with TRD Sport Package and the Toyota/DeeZee Tube Steps installed. (Pics were taken just after I installed the Steps.)
The installation was a snap. I did it by myself. I used a furniture dolly (4-wheel) with some 2x4 pieces of wood to prop up the Step and bolted them on following the instructions. 30 minutes tops - done.
BTW, the truck was "Zaino'd" about 2 weeks prior to the pictures being taken. Picture were taken on a overcast day. Just 1 coat of Z-2 with a Z-6 wipe down. (Of course it was prep'd first, Turtle Wax wash to remove all the grime from the California rain and road grime, then "Dawn" wash, thed Z-7 wash, then the Z-2 Polish for fine scratches and swirl marks, buffed, and finished off with a Z-6 gloss enhancer. I can't wait to put more coats on!!!!!)
WOW. First pictures I've seen of a red one. I didn't think the DeeZee steps would go good with many other colors, but you've proved that wrong. Very sharp looking truck.
Nice wax job too. I've got my deluxe kit of Zaino waiting to be applied. I've just been waiting for a good weekend to do it. (I need about 4 hours, because I need to wash, clay, wash, dry, wax, and maybe the Z-6.) I never used clay before about 2 months ago when using the kit on my wife's car. I was surprised how much junk it takes off. I think her's will look better, since hers is more of a charcoal color, versus my silver. I was going to go with black, but when they had a silver (my second color choice) coming in, I went with it.
[Oil Discussion] Well, I guess I agree with some of what that guy said in his article, however, his filter suggestions seemed like they weren't based on much. I think if someone is taking them apart and/or testing them, they will know which is a better filter. I still think there is an advantage to using Synthetic motor oil, even if, it doesn't extend the time between changes. I wasn't planning on extending it anyway. 5,000 miles is standard for me. I'm a little ticked, since I found out that the "coupon" book that I bought with my truck, turns out, that you MUST use the 3000 mile oil change coupon at 3000 miles, or you can't use it. What a rip. I should have just told them to keep their coupons. Oh, well, guess I can use some of them, such as the tire rotation ones...
Does anyone know anything about getting a tube that threads onto the bottom of the oil filter "cup" that is just below the filter? I was told by a salesman (as if that means much?), that Toyota would sell a tube that would allow you to connect to that cup, so that you could bring the tube down to where your oil pan would be.
Some people have told me that they punch through the oil filter with a screw driver while draining the oil, so it releases the oil in the filter. Wouldn't this possibly let the junk that the filter filtered out, back into the engine, or at least, the oil pan? I wouldn't think this is a great idea.
I have been debating about buying a set and last night when I was washing my DCab, I noticed lots of the little stone/sandblasting {they shy ed from using salt on our slippery winter roads} chips at the rear door bottom back edge and the lower part of the bed fender in front of the rear wheels. This just from driving for 2 months on the winter roads and I thought that perhaps the Tube Steps could help to reduce the wear, as the flaps aren't low enough in front.
Looking at the picture it seems that it might help a bit but one might have to apply a coat of plastic film to the bottom of the steps, plus they look great.
Thanks for the reply on that link, I saw that quote as well. Kind of caught me by surprise. If you can find any other links that are as informative then please post them.
It wouldn't surprise me. It's funny how when you start driving a new car, how much more you notice that particular brand of cars on the road. It surprises me, that 9 times out of 10, you'll find at least one, if not 3-4 more Toyota's at a light, that and Honda.
[Chipping] Well, since I've had the running boards installed, I have yet to hear a single rock fly up and hit the doors or rocker panels while driving. It usually happened at least once a day without them...
I am just curious on where you recieved this quote ie province & dealer location, since I am searching around for the best price! Walking home with the 38K price tag is about what I had in mind. I assume you were pricing V6 access cab 4x4 offroad package.
Sorry to butt in, but don't you wish they were as cheap as our friends are getting theirs, down in the states...
In Nova Scotia the 3 dealers I spoke to were all using the Toyota Access Pricing model so the price was all the same as on the Toy website. {I had no trade}
Then you have to add the Shipping fee of $1,200. the tire tax, the Air Cond Tax, the window anti theft security etching, {seems to me there was something else} all non negotiable...
My Double Cab TRD cost me almost $48K with a few extras, {negotiably priced} hitch/harness, rear tonneau, hood deflector, window deflectors, racing pedals, bed liner, 2 extra bed side tie downs, rust protection, and ext warranty.
My one week old Tacoma Double Cab had an annoying rattle which sounded as if it was coming from the passenger side of the vehicle. Upon investigation I figured out that is was the cover to the jack storage area that was rattling against it's base. This can be found under the right rear passenger seat in the double cab model. I confirmed that the cover latches securely but it still rattles against the base. I had a passenger put weight on the cover while I did a test drive and the rattle was gone. This should be a simple fix by using some foam self-stick door insulation available at most hardware stores to take up some of the slop. I will give it a try this weekend.
The other issue I have is a wind whistle around the upper part of the driver's window. I'm guessing the dealer may need to do a slight door adjustment or something. Any ideas?
Other than these couple of minor issues the truck appears to be flawless (build 2/05 in California)
I am looking for a roll bar type piece of nice looking metal to put behind the rear window in the cab or on the rim to mount antennas from. Rather than drilling holes in the cab roof for my amateur radio (ham) antennas, I would mount them on a plate that is connected to the top of the "roll bar". Anyone know of a place to get something similar?
DOes anyone know how to remove the covers for the air conditioning/heating and radio from the 2005 Tacoma? I have the JBL radio and want to mount a XM radio unit below the heater controls and above the cigarette lighter. I was hoping to remove the cover(s) to grab a screw head to put a mounting bracket without drilling visible holes.
Anybody added a satellite radio tuner to their factory AM/FM/CD radio yet? Was looking at the Delphi and other tuners to see which ones might work best in my DC Taco, and noticed that at the Crutchfield web site, they have a "helper tool" where you specify make and model, and they advise which tuners will work in your vehicle. Entering the info on the Taco, it said that there are underdash tuners (starting at about $50)that will enable you to use the factory head unit to tune into XM satellite service so long as you also buy a digital adapter (another $50). But the only adapters they carry are for Sony, Alpine, etc. Has anyone done this? If so, which adapter will work with the factory radio? Anybody know which audio mftr. makes the Toyota radio (not the JBL unit, which would be obvious)?
It would be very cool to add satellite service without having to "bulk up" the dash with an aftermarket receiver!
I have been making the rounds at Best Buy, Circuit City, and other locals to see what they recommend in adding a XM receiver to my 2005 Taco JBL radio. Easiest is either transmit a small FM band signal to the radio from the XM unit and catch it on one of your presets or have it wired directly to the antennna jack with a TEE connector so it is always there into the radio. I am looking at how I can mount the small Delphi receiver below the heater controls. Best of luck, you and me!
vmiman, I did get the noise fixed.....my problem was not a cab mount or loose seatbelt, etc., rather it was in fact a problem with the suspension. (the dealer heard the noise and strongly felt that it was in the suspension-it did take them 3 tries to finally fix this. The parts that finally fixed the problem are as follows: Part # Description 48810-04010 Link 48820-04020 Link 48815-AD030 Bushing x2 48829-04010 Brackett 48824-04020 Brackett
Once these parts were replaced, no more noise (for about 750 miles since the fix) Note that on my original posts I only heard the noise on the passenger side, then at roughly 2500miles, I began to hear it on the driver's side as well so they replaced the above parts for both sides. My dealer here in Atlanta was actually very helpful. Hope this helps.
I haven't done it yet, but I was thinking about sacrificing one of the tie-down cleats. I don't konw how big the mounting bracket for your ham radio is, but I have a cb antenna I was thinking about mounting that way. The tie-down cleat should be big enough to mount an antenna to without having to drill into the bed or the cab or somewhere else on the body.

Did they have to take off part of the rail system to mount it? Does it lock?
Who did you get to do it for you (I'm in Colo too).

Toyota is the #2 automaker globally.
Now with GM sales down combined with negative cash flow, many are assuming Toyota may take the #1 spot. GM is about 15% right now and Toyota is 10%.
