All Tacomas have this. It doesn't stop the chipping that occurs higher up on the fender flares

I took my truck to the dealer (Oxnard, CA). They said all they can do, since there is no Service Bulletin from Toyota for this problem, is check the rear suspension and check if everything is working correctly. Of course, they came back with,
everything looks good. They also shared my concern about bottoming out, however they can not do anything due to no service alerts. They recommended I contact the regional office and file my complaint. As happy I'm with the truck, I'm equally unhappy about the payload of this vehicle. No vehicle should bottom out driving down the freeway with only people in the cab.

Has anybody out there successfully fitted a fifth-wheel hitch on a Tacoma 2005? This question was addressed here six months ago in January 2005 and not answered. Are there any answers to the question today?

I recently bought a Toyota Tacoma 2005 Access Cab. I also have a small Fifth-Wheel Trailer and have a Hijacker SL-16 fifth-wheel hitch.
But my local RV dealers tell me that no RV hitch manufacturer in North America has designed a system for installing a fifth-wheel hitch suitable for the Tacoma 2005. Without the support of a hitch manufacturer the RV dealers in my local area refuse to attempt any sort of fifth-wheel hitch installation for liability reasons.
The problem they say is the design of the bed. The 2005 bed and the structural stiffeners of its underside are made of a composite plastic material. The locations and varying depths of the stiffeners, and the nature of the composite material make it difficult for the frame brackets to be bolted in a structurally sound fashion to the bedrails of the hitch. (see also erniec’s email #1100)

However Toyota continues to advise me that a fifth-wheel hitch can be fitted to the truck. My owner's manual shows a picture of a Tacoma 2005 towing a fifth-wheel trailer. My Toyota salesman told me that the bed of the truck, made of composite material, is stronger than previous steel beds and that anything the steel bed could do, the composite bed can do equally well or better.

Please respond to this email if you know of any installation of a fifth-wheel hitch in a Tacoma 2005. Also please respond if you have wanted to install a fifth-wheel hitch in the Tacoma 2005 but have not been able to do so
    Thanks.

    >a few things I noticed:
the bottom of the doors and bed have rockerguard on them. were the early builds like this as well, or is this a response to pitting? <>

Mine had/has it but most of it has chipped off. Built 10-04. It's up to the attorney now.
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
It could very well be that with it being a VERY recent redesign that the designers of the 5th wheels haven't had time to set up the install directins yet. I might suggest that you contact them directly to see if they have any updates and or ETA's for when they will be available. I can understand the RV dealer's concern due to the wonderful way our legal system works. It's easier to just not do anything at all rather than be innovative and risk lawsuits.

If I hear anything I will post it here.

Hi bjw1,do you have a website/toll free number on this company? Does it fit most of the after market navigation system? I have a Pioneer AVic-N2? Your information will be tremendously helpful,Thanks...
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Ebay is the cheapest place to get one. Yes, it will fit the AVIC-N2, which is a double din radio. This kit will work with all single and double din headunits.

Thanks for all your reply regarding my brief experience driving my new taco w/ the limited rear differential in the locked position. I drove her yesterday to the verizon store in downtown Pasadena. What a sweet but short drive. I'm going to buy the extended warranty from the Greenfield, MA toyota dealer and return what I bought from my local dealer. He gave me so much mis-information such as, if you don't buy it now you'll have to purchase a used vehicle warranty. First asking price was, $1650.00. When I mentioned edmunds.com $875...he changed his story. Now I f ind out you can buy it for $800..lol.

Doesn't it make sense to purchase the extended warranty prior to the expiration of the 3/36?

Now if I can only figure out how to install a kenwood navigation system in my taco while retaining keyless entry and alarm system..

    Enjoy your tacos!

I just received my new DC LB sport #4 SR5 in white after crashing my black 05 DC LB 4X4 SR5. Can anyone tell me what is the tallest tires I can put on these 17" rims without installing a lift or is the factory 265/65 about the biggest that will fit ? I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who knows for sure.

    THANKS

I searched for K972 on ebay and got one for $15.95 + $9 S+H. The color of the kit is black. Does anyone know if there is a silver one to match the rest of the dash?
  • soundman34soundman34 Member Posts: 36
I have the same problem when I have 4 adults in the truck and I either go over a large bump or dip in the road. I got the same line at my dealer. I am going to buy a product call super springs to take care of the problem until they come out with a fix. They do not require any disassemble of the existing supension. Check out their website. www.supersprings.com. I am ordering mine from performance products for 280.00 for the pair. They look pretty simple to put on.

" Does anyone know if there is a silver one to match the rest of the dash?"

Spray painting the panel before installation would be really easy. Spray cans would do a fine job on a panel as small as this.

In fact, a different shade of silver, say, a metallic dark gray, would probably look very nice. Contrasting, complementary colors often look better than trying and failing at an exact match. Sheen could be adjusted with clear coats.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Or if you want to wait a little longer, Metra is coming with a dash kit too. I don't know if theirs will be black or silver. It would nice if it was silver, but almost all dash kits only come in black.

I'm currently looking into modding the stock panel. An aftermarket double din radio is pretty close to covering all the holes in the stock radio panel. I'll let you know if it works.

I have a Tacoma 2005, 4 cyl. manual transm., 2700mi. Does anyone noticed some problems at idle when using air conditionning, the motor becomes noisy, you can ear the valves clicking.
  • rideamtnrideamtn Member Posts: 16
I did the same. After the runaround from the dealer, I also ordered a set. I installed mine last Monday (P/N SSA18). After installation, I heard a clanking noise, come to find out the front shackle was hitting the frame. So, I called Super Springs and talked to the owner, Gerry. He seemed intrigued by this and wondered if I could take pictures and send so he could evaluate. Since I live in Camarillo, I just drove up to Carpinteria. Gerry was very helpful and thought a shorter shackle would alleviate the problem. Gerry also mentioned he worked with Toyota and they said the leafs from 04 to 05 were not changing, even thou the body changed. That's why SuperSprings specifies the same P/N for 96-05's Tacoma Prerunners. He wanted his guys to swap out the shackles at his place but they were in the middle of unloading a truck and I had to get going. He gave me the shorter shackles and I swapped out that night. When I first test drove it seemed to fix the problem. However, driving home from work today with 4 people in the cab and going over a big dip in the freeway, I thought I heard something hit. I checked as soon as I got home and there was a small mark on the frame. I'm going to have a friend bounce the rear up and down while I'm underneath the truck and see how much clearance there is between the shackle and frame. Gerry mentioned that if the shorter shackle is not the fix, they may have to swap with shorter springs. If you have any problems, call Gerry and he'll help you out. Also, just a note, after install of the springs, it lifted my rear end about an 1 1/4".

I have the same truck and have noticed the same thing. I was even thinking about putting some a/c oil in the system because of it. Every once in a while when I turn the a/c on, I will hear a grinding noise for a couple seconds. Along with the noise, the lose of power is very very noticeable as well as a harder shift through the gears.

I'm very uncomfortable with the high idle speed (1900-2100 RPM) when I first start up my std, shift 2005 Tacoma 4cyl in the morning. It sits there for maybe 10-15 seconds, and then slowly works it's way down to 700-800. Sometimes you just want to start-up and go, but with the motor racing like that, it's not comfortable. Anyone else encounter this? Is it normal and do I just have to put up with it? The dealer says it's normal.............
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
You haven't told us what the overall weight of the trailer is. However, being a popup, unless you load it up with bricks, you should be fine. The truck is rated to tow 3,500 lbs. with 350lbs tongue weight. You should be well under that limit. Shouldn't have any trouble at all, and not really straining the engine much either. Remember the payload capacity of the bed is about 1,500 lbs.

  • cgyfiremancgyfireman Member Posts: 12
Yup,piece of cake to tow a pop-up.This is an awesome little engine, peppy, good on gas and 3500 lbs is a lot for a 4 banger.....I'm impressed so far.
  • bjw1bjw1 Member Posts: 152
it is normal, all vehicles do that, now if it goes high rpm and does not come down then you might have a problem, but as far as it starting like that is completely normal, someone else might be able to tell you what for but i know its normal.
  • jojrjojr Member Posts: 8
I also have noticed the same problem , I have about 1200 miles on my truck i think this is normal because they set the fast idle to reduce emissions at idle and to have a faster warm time i have other late models that acted this way and no harm resulted.

I now have my fogs set up to run anytime via dash switch. I am looking to install HID style lights in the fogs. Any hints on accessing the bulbs, with skid plates it seems the only way to get to them is to remove the wheel wells. Or is there a way to remove the assembly from the bumper?

    Hello Everyone,

I would like to know if anyone is having this problem. The problem is that if it rains a couple of times between washings, I have black streaks running down the side of my white access cab tacoma. The streaks form at the bottom of the rear access windows, and run down the side of the cab.

Please reply if you have this problem.

    Thanks,

I installed a set of SuperSprings 3 months ago because I tow a boat and haul a 4 wheeler. I havent noticed any scrapes from the shackles hitting the frame. I bought mine from LoadandTow.
  • rideamtnrideamtn Member Posts: 16
    No problem Soundman.

They are easy to install. It took me about an 1 1/2. I took off the rear wheels, easier access to the leafs. Only thing that is kind of tricky is after attaching the front shackle, the rear shackle can be attchached by using a C-clamp to lower the spring so the bolt holes line up. Other than that, piece of cake.
  • rideamtnrideamtn Member Posts: 16
Interesting why mine is hitting??? Could you take a picture of your install? Mainly I'm interested where the front shackle is positioned on your set-up. When I stopped by SuperSprings,Gerry evaluated my install and said it was text book. I'll be talking to him Monday. It'd be great if I could show him a pic of your install.

I also purchased mine from Land&Tow, Steve was very hands on and provided great customer service.

2005 prerunner, V6, automatic. Need some help. It's already time for me to change out my spark plugs. The drivers side of the engine is tough to get access to. Does any body know what interfierance has to be removed to get the old plugs out and the new ones in. I really have a tough time leaving my truck at the dealer.

I'd like to add a Westin Chrome Bull Bar to my 2005 Silver Tacoma Sport. Any info on what Model number and size of PIAA Lights that might look good? Also how hard is the bar itself to install and are any special tools required?

I want to put studded snow tires on the back two wheels of my new 4WD Tacoma. The owners manual says not to mix different types of tires. Can someone advise or at least help me understand the rational?
If I understand correctly, it has something to do with having all the wheels maintaining the same degree of resistance/traction.
    But I have questions:
    1. Doesn't the weight of the engine cause the front wheels to grip better already. I know when I put studded snow tires on my old 2WD toyota, it helped to keep the rear end from fish tailing when I braked on ice and snow.
    2. If I only plan to switch to 4WD drive on ice and snow where the wheels are experiencing various degrees of slipping, what does it matter?
    3. I don't necessarily want better traction; I want better stopping power on mountain roads with black ice.
    4. The tire man suggests that I put studded tires on all four wheels. But, I once had a front wheel drive car with studded snow tires and because of the weight and turning of the front wheels, the studs wore down in one season. If I do that with my 4WD Tacoma before the end of the season the traction would be different anyway.

I am looking for a iPod adapter to hook up to my 2005 Tacoma DBC. I have the 6 disc JBL and I am hoping to find a adapter that will allow the stock stereo to display the song playing etc. I know the JBL model supports text display. Does anyone know anything like this? I have seen a few but they dont seem to support this feature!

    Thanks

We have the same problem with the Matrix's and Corolla's as they use the
"throttle-by-wire" system. Most, if not all, aftermarket cruise control systems use an actuator on or near the throttle cable. With there being no throttle cable on these vehicles, there isn't anywhere for it to get installed. The only option we've been able to come up with is to get the Cruise control unit that comes in the steering column, where we have to order the new steering column, and steering wheel including the cruise control stalk.

If you do find some other solution, please share it here as it would make life easier for me and other customers as well.

I misplaced my digital camera, (think its at my parents) so i cant take any pics anytime soon. My setup is; long shackle in front, just in front of the c-shaped piece that surrounds the leaf springs. I used the bottom hole. I also remeber turning all the SuperSpring bolts so the nut/extra threads would be toward the outside, mainly because I thought it might hit the gas tank. The top of the front shackle is approx 2 inches from the frame. Hope this helps
