you have just ordered you truck. I thought you had overlooked floor mats because you have never talked about them. Sorry.

Glad to hear you're enjoying your new truck. The one I have on order is also Indigo Blue.

I'm getting excited. Ordered the Weathertech visors from MacNeil Automotive ( www.macneilauto.com ) and the Lund Interceptor from www.wrenchead.com tonight. Best prices I've been able to find on both. Free shipping from wrenchead if you order by tomorrow. Thanks to all for the tips and advice.

My truck had a TPW of 3/27. Hope it got built. I'm going to call CS tomorrow to get the VIN.

This is directly copied from the Hypertech website, all I did was copy and paste. This should answer all the questions why anyone would want to use one.

    Low-Temperature Thermostats
Increases Mass Flow Rate of Intake Air
Allows Engine to Cool Down to Lower Temperature than Factory Thermostats
    Reduces Engine's Tendency to Detonate
Reduce Temperature of Both the Incoming Air/Fuel Mixture and Combustion Chamber Surface
A Hypertech PowerStat low-temp thermostat improves performance in two ways: first by increasing the mass flow rate of intake air and second by reducing the engine's tendency to detonate.

From the laws of physics, cooler air is denser than warmer air. Since horsepower increases as the amount of air and fuel burned increases, cooler air (with more air molecules per cubic inch) makes more power. The PowerStat allows the engine to cool down to a lower temperature than the factory thermostat to make more power. At the drags, water can be sprayed on the radiator between races to drop the temperature and improve performance, but the PowerStat ensures that you leave the line at the same temperature each run to give consistent maximum performance for bracket racing.

Detonation, usually producing audible pinging or even knocking sounds, refers to the spontaneous explosion of the unburned air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Detonation abruptly and violently ends the normal combustion process, reduces power, and can severely damage the engine. A PowerStat reduces the temperature of both the incoming air/fuel mixture and the surfaces of the combustion chamber, greatly reducing the tendency to detonate, and allows the engine to safely develop more horsepower.

PowerStats should always be used in an engine controlled by a computer to insure consistent performance. Hypertech ThermoMaster Power Chips have been designed to operate with Hypertech PowerStats.

...But why waste all this energy maxing out a Truck....when a stock Camaro/Trans Am/Mustang will blow the S*@T out of it?

Trucks just are not for racing..

I know...shut up and let you be.....so be it.

What I always wonder about the quick fix add-on products is, if it's so easy then why didn't the manufacturer do it? An extra 15hp translates to millions of dollars I would think. And all they have to do is put in a K&N air filter. Gosh I guess GM hasn't figured that out yet.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
I have the 5000lb Air Lift bags with an on-board compressor. They also make a 2500lb version which is probably better for a 1/2 ton truck. By the way, the "5000lb" capacity bag manual says the bags lift 400lbs per 10psi and have a maximum pressure rating of 100psi. Interesting math these marketing people use. And the Firestone bags are exactly the same way. I don't know if the 2500lb bags follow the same nonsense but it is likely.

Someone on the Camper topic turned me on to www.jegs.com. They by far have the lowest price on Air Lift I've seen ($199 for 5000lb version). If you do buy them, come on over to the Camper topic #1637 for some installation advise. A quick tip, install the valves in the license plate recess of the bumper. That way you can fill both sides while standing in one place, and be able to see the side-to-side level (Mike L idea).

are trying to come up with a better Idea than an Oil slopped sponge technology from the 60's?

The hell with 5 here and 10 there....Drop in some NOS for 125HP extra right now!

Just for grins...when who ever has there truck all modded out...and kicking [non-permissible content removed] as they see it....get me a 1/4 mile time...with all the mods..

Your truck will be coming soon I'll bet. Just park it in the sun and stand back, dang but that is a beautiful blue.

That's good advice Vince. I think the 2500 lb bags have more "extension," ie don't require lash straps to keep from over-extending if you off road much. But the basic reason for the 2500 lb bags on Mark's 1/2 ton is that either bag won't increase GVWR, just allows you to level out up to your max rated GVWR.

As for the physics, I note mine are a little over 4 inches diameter, also 100 psi max. 100psi(PI*R^2) for two bags does equal to the 2500 pound rating, or 250 lbs per 10 psi.

The proper way to measure the stock ride height is from the inside of the fender to the center of the wheel hub. This negates any influence of tire pressure on the measurement. Thereafter, adjust the air pressure to maintain the stock ride height.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
I've never doubted their ability to increase flow rate and hp.

What I have doubted is their ability to filter air properly. I had one K&N that had sealing leaks. Looked small to the eye, but the Grand Canyon to a speck of dirt. Also noted accumulation of grime inside the intake manifold on my old Mustang. Some say I over oiled it...but I feel safer using stock paper element in my truck.
  • gnippergnipper Member Posts: 120
OK Ryan - you know anything more about it? Don't lead us on. Someone else posted over the last couple of weeks that it now said "Off Road" on it. Well I know for a fact it used to say that in years past, then it was updated for 99 and 00 and they removed the Off Road from it. Have they already started using the new one - or is it for '01? You source know any of this? I really liked the current one, there is a really sharp hitch plug out that matches it as well, but I did find and have bought my "Sooners" plug so guess I won't need that one.

Thanks for any info you have.

Much of what is in post 163 is accurate;however, I have to agree with quadrunner500. Unless the cooler thermostat has a larger port to the radiator, at least half of the year it won't help because the amount of water going to be cooled is limited to the size of that port once the thermostat is fully open.

I had an '85 S10 and tried a cooler thermostat but to no avail. Only when I pulled the thermostat out completely did I see any drop in temperature.

Yes it changed for a fact. My salesman told me last night. He has a few trucks on the lot with the new sticker. Im going in 2 hrs to the local dealer to see for myself. He said its more of a block type ( i think he said red still) with the word offroad under it kinda like the old version. I am kinda upset i really like the origional sticker and i did get the hitch plug already. Anyone wanna buy a brand new Z71 hitch plug??? WHY 3/4 of the way through a production year do they want to change the Z71 sticker what was wrong with the old one????? Why not wait till the 2001 trucks. I dont know about gm but they are really starting to piss me off.

Tim i agree with you on the chips all it is a waste of money and why would u want to modify a truck to be so fast??? Wait for the silverado SS and buy that then. OR buy a sportscar if you want speed.

Sorry if i start to seem like im in a really bad mood but gm changing stuff on me is really bugging me i pray the sticker looks half way decent. Ill let you all know what it looks like if i find a truck with one.

    Have a nice weekend everyone

About mods...haven't done any in the last 5 vehicles I've owned...don't know what it is with the Silverado that makes me want to add more and more mods even if it's a waste of money.

Didnt get a bug guard im gonna wait till i know for sure the hood design doesnt change before it comes in. Ill probably get the lund interceptor. Ok i have a question is the hood predrilled. I still havent found a lund interceptor no drill every where i go they think im nuts. Im just wondering if the hood is predrilled

THERE ARE 5 SQUARE HOLES ON THE UNDER-SIDE OF THE HOOD WHERE YOU CAN INSERT THE FIVE NYLON PLUGS THAT COME WITH THE BUG-DEFLECTOR. THE HOLES LOOK LIKE THIS (NOTE, NOT ACTUAL SIZE):

THE OTHER FIFTY PEOPLE ON HERE WHO HAVE STATED THEY HAVE INSTALLED THEIR BUG-GUARDS USING THE EXISTING PRE-DRILLED HOLES ARE NOT LYING TO YOU. WE DID NOT DRILL. WE DID NOT GLUE. WE DID NOT WELD OUR BUG GUARDS ON. WE ATTACHED THEM TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HOOD USING THE

There is in fact a new sticker. The letters are more of a solid block type. They don't have that "line" running through the letters like the current ones. They still have a orange/red Z followed by a gray 71. "Off Road" is in black letters below the 71. Hope that all made sense.

Jeeze Ryan, I'd cancel my order if I were you! While the 2000 has more horsepower, the art is not as good.

As your passion is obviously art, and not thermodynamics, you should get the artsy 1999 model!

BTW, thanks for all the info on airbags. I too am a president's club Camping World goofball. Gonna go get my coworker redneck musclecar buddy's Jeg's catalogue right now.

Sorry, Ryan. You take yourself too seriously at times as do most of you youngsters!

Anybody out there ride dirtbikes besides Quad? At the ripe old age of 21 I figured out that I would never be able to afford automotive racing. Bought my firt dirtbike then, and have never regretted it.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
yep it changed went and took a look. It looks pretty cool and i think my hitch plug hasnt gone to waste. the Z is still red no line running through the 7 and directly under the 71 is the word offroad in small white block letters outlined in black kinda small if u ask me though. I seen it on a red truck dont know how itll look on a blue truck though oh well. The destination did go up to $690 too. Just wanted to confirm these things

THANKS KYLE for the hood info. I appreciate it very much.

Mark im going to change my major to art today i might even go to the art gallery before work today too

  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
LOL! Ya know, I bet the women chasing is much better at the art gallery than the hardware or motorcycle stores, maybe I've been hanging out at the wrong place all this time. How would one actually find an art gallery?

When I received my Lund Interceptor, the box contained 1- interceptor 6-square white plugs
and 6- screws. I guess the extra plug and screw is for backup in case you drop one and can't find it. As Kyle states, the screws are inserted through the lund into the white plastic squares that were previously inserted into the stamped squares in the underside of the hood. No drilling required..although I used my cordless Makita to insert the screws. Took about 5 minutes which included reading instructions so actually about 4 minutes. Sorry...hope I'm not beating a dead horse. In case you're (your) wondering, I am joking although the story is factual. ;)

so Ryan understands about the square holes?
Did you wish you could get a four banger, seeing as how you are so concerned that your truck LOOKS good but dont want to waste $$ on performance? I am sure if you ever got a girl beside you in your new ride it wont impress her when you get blown off by some ratty looking F**D with a piss on Chevy sticker in the back! Oh well, at least you LOOKED good! LOL!

BTW...got me an older yz250. Its plenty fast, and it dont look too good anymore either!

Oh ya gonna start dual sporting more. Bought one of those big water cooled XR's

About the chains...Just remove the bags when you need to run chains! Takes only 1 minute for each side. Don't even have to remove wheel. You'll see how when you get 'em.

Tongue weight subtracts from your GAWR, GVWR, GCWR, etc. I'm sure you've already figured out you are probably close, or over on one or more of those when you consider two bikes, gas, tools, passengers,...and a travel trailer. Tongue weight rating on your truck is 1000#.

It would be a good idea to get the weight reading for the rear axle when a scale is handy. Also load your stuff towards the rear of the travel trailer..(duh).

Hey Ryan - thanks for taking the heat over the Z71 sticker - I'm the one that asked for more details. I have to agree, leave it alone during the model year - and yes it is all about looks - believe me I wouldn't have ordered a Black truck (and paid extra for a few little Z71 details) if I wasn't into the looks as much. Those that own the Black and Indigo Blue know why you have that color - the darker colors just seem to really stand out and are a little sharper (my opinion) when they are clean. It takes lots of work to keep it clean and looking good though. If you're not into devoting a part of every week to making sure your truck is clean then you go with one of the more neutral colors - that's what I did back in '96.

My truck still isn't here, but I've had my Zaino for over 3 weeks - and yes I've asked the dealer to not touch the truck when it arrives - I don't want them to wash it or wax it when it comes in.

Everybody has their own opinion - and yes my friends think I'm nuts too - I'm becoming obsessed with this truck.

  • gnippergnipper Member Posts: 120
OK - I'll try to get some other thoughts going here as well -
What are the little changes you'd like to see GM make to the truck? You know after all it is the little things in life that make some of us tick.

Personally #1) I see no reason why there isn't a 5 or 6 disc CD changer in that hole where they keep insisting on putting a cassette deck and #2) why isn't there a power outlet inside the console on trucks with bucket seats? - makes good sense - leave the phone out of site and still able to plug it in (OK - I'll admit that may be part of the cell phone wiring harness, but since not one person anywhere at the dealer or GM could tell me what that option consisted of - I didn't buy it). But look inside the console to the right of the change holder - there appears to be what would be a knock out for a power outlet - I may try adding that one myself.

What do others want to see as little changes to make you life easier?
  • werkingwerking Member Posts: 431
i agree on the cd changer thing. a girl my wife works with just got the lexus suv, and it has a 6 cd changer mounted so you can access it through the glove box. easy access, and unless the box is open, you can't tell it's in there. and yes, the cassette player would be the perfect thing to replace. i didn't get the cassette player in mine, so i just have an extra little cubby there for my wallet, etc. as for the outlet in the console, i was looking at that knock-out myself this weekend and thinking...what is that for? that would be a great place for one. if you put an outlet in there, be sure to post how you did it and how much hassle it was.
the only other thing i can think of is knocking out the blank above the inside rear view mirror and make it a cubby. that'd be a great place for a radar detector, sunglasses, etc. other than that...i think this truck is put together perfectly...still no complaints. 3300 miles and counting...

Trailer tongue is around 4 to 6 hundred lbs. Truck is rated for payload of 2035lbs (chevy adv) or 1300 lbs (sticker in glove box) depending on what you believe.

Couple bikes and junk goes around 800 lbs or so. couple of guys 400 lbs. Dog 80.

Rear axle rated 3800 I think. Figure empty truck puts about 1800 lbs on axle.

I think the stock leaf springs are too low a spring rate.

    Whadda yawl think?

Called CS to get a status on my Silverado. Waited on hold about 15 minutes and almost hung up. Glad I didn't. The truck is built and waiting on the ramp. Got my VIN. The rep said my truck should be at the dealer no later than Monday. That's 4/3. Do I dare believe it? Tomorrow is April Fools day.

Your weight ratings sound very similar to mine.

    Silverado 1500 4x4 reg cab longbed 4.8L 5spd

The 2035 is the max payload. The 1300 is the slide-in camper rating. Much lower to allow for passengers, fuel, water, supplies, etc in the camper.

My camper weighs 1200lbs, my wife and I almost 350 together, and we exceed 6400 GVWR when ready to go. It doesn't bother me to be 100lbs over, but it bothers my wife, so we have a 2500 on order.

    Greg,
You may want to reconsider the no wash part. Most of the trucks I've seen come in with rail dust all over them. Some of it is actually stuck to the paint and reuires a clay bar or acid bath to remove it. Look very carefully at the paint when the truck arrives. If it has (very) small black specks all over the paint (and you can actually feel it), let the dealer remove it. That way they are responsible if they screw it up. GM has a special acid bath that removes it all very well without harming the paint. It does, however, remove the shine. I couldn't get the dealer to agree to use thge clay bar, which I preferred. Your dealer may be different. I watched them do the acid bath and you can actually see the small specs of metal disolving. If you try to put the Zaino Bros polish on before the rail dust is removed, you will embed it into the paint.

    Tim,

I'll accept your congrats when the truck gets here. Right now, I have only an order number to keep me warm, not even a 'born on date'.

My dealer orders once a week, on Tuesday's. I don't know if that is normal or not. But, my order went in on the last day for them to order this year. Last day to order this year is April 3, and that is a Monday. Wheels website still lists 8-14 weeks for these trucks. That puts me into May - June.

A couple more months to save for my down payment.

    2500 LS 4x4 6.0L 5spd Reg Cab Long Bed
    Dark Carmine Red w/black flares
    PYO Aluminum Wheels
MSRP $27768 My GMS Price $24188

Its really weird - I took my truck and went to Kelly Blue Book. If it were a used 99 with 10,000 miles, it would be worth (retail) $27,000, or nearly the MSRP, and more than I'm paying. Not complaining, just mystified.

    Mike L
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
will hold it better as they are harder to find..due to less being made. When a guy is looking for a used one..he has few choices and may have to pay whatever the seller wants...period. Like when I sell!

As I mentioned...a 99 with 36K miles..LS..sold here for $29,000.....friggin'nuts man. I paid $30,006 out the door for my 2000 2500 LT with GM discount...

    I ain't complaining either!

Carmine is a nice color...I wish it came with Gold on the bottom for an LT...but we have already had this talk before...

    Good Luck

Kelly Blue Book on the web is a front for dealers. The "trade in" price is lower than low book (even they admit that in the fine print) and I would guess the high is above high book. They set up those prices to lower your expectations when you go to get gouged at the used car dealer. My 18 year old car with 180k came out above $3000 for the high side, give me a break. I go to the library and look at the real paper book when I want realistic numbers.
  • gnippergnipper Member Posts: 120
Thanks for the wash info. An acid wash huh? That scares me a little I guess too. I actually already have the clay bar from Zaino, I planned on using that first thing. Of course if the dealer can actually do more good than harm, I don't have a problem with that, but I've only heard just the opposite. My dealer did tell me they didn't wax them like some, but I preferred that they didn't touch it at all. I may reconsider.

Hopefully good news, my salesman left me a message today, he was gone when I called back, I'm hoping he is calling to tell me the truck is in, but won't know til tomorrow. If it is, that is 2 days under 6 weeks from time of order. It was built two weeks ago. But I'm not in a huge hurry, my old one didn't sell and I'm out of town all week next week anyway, plan on picking it up next weekend after the financing is squared away.
  • bluebeastbluebeast Member Posts: 258
Remove the sticker, its just gonna peel off later anyway and then you'll have an faded into the paint "Z71". Come to think of it, remove the "Chevrolet" and the "1500" emblems while your at it, cheap plastic and a pain in the *** to wax around. Best thing I ever did.

I'll say it again, a few performance mods are great, not because I want a sports car or that I want a 1/4 mile time of 15 sec. I like to know IF I need to get the jump on a Tundra, Ford or Dodge theres a few extra "balls" available to do so. Like to have a few more truck lenghts from the competition.

Babbler, why don't you start a Silverado website? Like the F150online or tundrasolutions? Lets put that young energetic college degree brain to work!!
