twr - i'll echo what tim said. 99% of folks come here to do two things. 1) complain about problems they have to see if they're systemic (other people have the same problems) and if so, what people are doing to fix them. 2) to exchange information about accessories, and do-it-yourself kinda stuff (oil/filter changes, lube jobs, etc). i have a 2000 LS 1500, Z71, 5.3L and have not a complaint. truck's been great to me and i wouldn't trade it for the world. oh, some people come here just to heckle ryan too...forgot that one.
don't get ryan started on the tundra. he really wanted one but the dealers in his area said he they don't come indigo blue with black flares, and he'd have to install the nerf bars himself. so...he settled for his second choice - the silverado. but we still love him (kinda) anyways. ain't that right fellas?
Whats this about a lack of positive comments??? I hear the bad and good i have heard alot of i love my truck or my truck is great. I have a 2000 Z71 ext cab 4 door 1500 LS sb 5.3 V-8 and its great no complaints.
Dont start with the toyota thing im not in the mood.
Does anybody know who has the best deal on the Edelbrock IAS shocks, and what's this royal purple oil that people have been talking about.Just for the record 00 Silverado Z71 1500 LT ext cab 1900 miles and flawless,I think a Tundra would be a big mistake if your looking for a full size truck, tundra's almost full size.
Considering how many times people in this area have mentioned how much they like their trucks, and the fact that so few have mentioned problems, I can't understand your question. I have seen many, many more problems mentioned on the Tundra board. Heck, the last 100 posts here reflected zerk fittings.
When I started reading these post again several weeks ago it was because the wifey had the truck and I wanted to see how others were fairing. Now that I have the truck back I have found a few "MINOR" issues that I would not consider to be any reason not to but this vehicle. However, I do see this topic and others as a Databank for everyone to use for problems/fixes, upgrades and enhancements. I am also glad to see that owners such as Ryan, Red, Mike and Kyle to mention a few are willing to lend their information with a touch of humor at times. Ryan, about your dent, have you checked on having a paintless dent removal done? We had a door ding removed from our 2001 PF right on the lot and you can't tell it was even there. If it didn't look that good we would have not bought it.
No the dent went along with a very nice scratch that took all the paint off. All that was left was the metal color. Had it fixed 2 wks ago by a local chevy bodyshop looks great cant even tell needs some buffing out and thatll be tough because its in the rear close to the ext cab side by the flare. I have told people the area that got fixed to see if they noticed and no one has yet been able to exactly pin point it not even me.
I got the Service Manuals from Helm. They are a set of four, each as large as a phone book. That's four times the size of the shop manual I got for my Dakota. However, the manuals Tahoe and Suburban and their GMC counterparts as well.
I haven't had any use for them yet, but I've paged through them and found some interesting things. I figure if it saves me one trip to the shop it will have saved me the purchase price. Also, even if I have the shop do work I can be an educated consumer.
I believe it was vince that put the Hellwig rear anti-sway bar on his 3/4 ton truck. How much did it cost and where did you get it? I called ZMotive today (Ad in Truckin' magazine) and they said $119 for a 1/2 ton 2wd plus the roughly $20 bucks to ship it. Were the adjustable pivot end links standard with the kit or were they extra? Did it require drilling any holes? Sorry for the fifth degree, but just wondering how much of a pain it will be to install. Cool pics!
To the people buying the Helms service manuals, how much are they? Are they the same as are offered in the back of the GM owners manual?
Has anyone else out there installed rear anti-sway bars on their trucks? If so, what brand and would you recommend it?
The dealers that I have been to here in southern california guarentee their work and the paint with a lifetime guarantee. I had to have my '94 and '97 repaired and painted and they both turned out great. BTW both vehicles were damaged while almost new, both while parked! The '97 was in for maintainence at the dealer, and the mechanic did it. At least he owned up to it. I'm almost afraid to take the 2000 out of the driveway except that I love driving my new Silverado! No problems here. Smooth, quiet and powerful.
The reason you want a stabilizer bar is to prevent body lean. The middle of the bar is connected to the axle and the ends are connected to the frame. When the vehicle leans to the side, the axle gets closer to the frame on one end and farther away on the other. This causes the bar to twist, which it doesn't want to do. For bumps that raise both wheels the same amount, the bar just rotates on the axle and doesn't resist at all. On cars these are used to improve handling with little loss of ride comfort. On trucks it's mainly to handle heavy loads with more stability. I added one because I carry a full size cabover camper which is a very top heavy load. The bar reduces the lean and rocking.
It took way longer to install because I had to make up for Hellwig's weaknesses. It should take about 2 hours. No drilling is required.
I bought the bar at http://www.heckethorn.com/ for about $135. They sell them at JC Whitney as well. That $119 price is good. The end links are part of the kit, all bar mounts must have some means of moving front-rear a little. Cars usually have rubber bushings on each end of a shaft.
By the way gmc sierra, the service manual is from www.helminc.com and is the same factory manual GM sells. It costs $120.
I have read that GM will offer an option of four-wheel steering on 2002 full size pickups. Yes, that is 2002. Will cut 8 feet off the turning diameter at construction sites, etc. Reduces "turnaround time". Interesting spy report!!! Bob
back it in...I currently have a Silverado rental while mine is in the shop. The first time I had it, truck had 400 miles and cherry condition...three weeks later, truck has 1100 miles and a smashed passenger rear door from a lady who thought she was driving a Toyota and turned too quickly right into a pillar. Smash goes from bottom of window to bottom of door and about three inches deep and 11 inches wide...can actually see the impression, color, and texture of the pillar.
Good Morning everyone. I've been reading your post for the past couple of weeks and I must say you guys really know your stuff. I've been a motor head for the past 25 years (I started young)and I've owned all kinds of cars but I never owned a truck. Well now that times of changed and I can't seem to fit a sheet of plywood or haul bags of fertilizer etc.. in a sports car, I figured its time to turn to a full size truck as my daily driver and weekend work horse. The problem is I want the biggest and badest engine available at the moment (this goes back to my motor head days...its a sickness). I am looking at the Silverado 1500 LT 4x4 with the off road package(yes I want all the candy because I'll probably keep this truck for the next 10-15 years). The biggest engine I can get is a 5.3L at 285Hp. Is this going to change for 2001? I understand that the 2500 HD 6.0 is going to go to 325Hp for 2001 so I was wondering if Chevy is going to upgrade across the board. I tried contacting Chevy but they were no help. They did sent me some info regarding their new Avalanch but that truck looks like its better suited for Yuppies who want to look like they're rugged outdoors men and who have the extra money to burn than for a guy like me who needs to haul lumber and cement and just about everything else.
DMR3 post 525 - It was me who said that. BUT, after I received my bugshield, I reposted stating NOT to get the 18064. - The idiot sales rep sold me the wrong one (it was ordered over the phone from a company that will remain nameless - else my post will be deleted by MereDEATH). 18063 is for the Silverado. You gotta read all the posts!
BOB332 post 585 - Don't know if it'll ever see pavement, but the concept 'GMC Terradyne' sported 4-wheel-steering at the auto-show, along with built-in front whinch, 6 foot box the extends to 8 feet, rear-view Camera in the tailgate, a neat way of SLIDING the doors open, and even used the area between the inside and outside box walls for storage.
WW posted:I reposted stating NOT to get the 18064., You gotta read all the posts! -------------------- Can't..no time..too busy enjoying life. The repost must have been a little bit later, and I prob glanced and figured, shucks I have that info written down. No problem..I spent the extra and got it locally, so they reordered and the new one will be in today. For the person concerned that we don't love our trucks..we have the 2000 2WD, 6.0, 4.10, SB,4 door with trailer package (pulls like a dream..ya gotta be careful, you forget that 30 footer is back there!)and electric seats and have had nada a problem. Only things we added were running boards, ARE Cap and duraliner..it has no shutters, shakes or rolls so far!! Doris
Dont worry you didnt get me started. They are messing with me im used to it by now. They actually think i was gonna buy a toyota. Yea right for a yr and a half i was "talking" about ordering and buying a truck. im sure some still dont believe me even though i had pics taken not totally up to date yet because of accessories.
Hey wheres BLUE been lately you know my "internet dad"???
Was ur sis younger or older than you??? My dad and uncle tortured my aunt they made her be the hockey goalie when they played they tied pillows to her for padding. You did the same didnt you hahaha. Oh the stories you hear as you grow up funny as hell.
Thanks for the link obyone. It sure looks pretty but I'd be afraid to get it dirty. Its probably going to cost a pretty penny too. Any word on the 5.3L??? By the way, I was looking at some old postings and the topic of Zerks has me wondering.....GM doesn't provide grease fittings for its trucks? Can someone fill me in briefly on this subject as well.
production, the Terradyne will probably cost as much as a HumVee...
Ryan
kinda curious. What is it about zerks that you don't understand? and regardless whether you understand or not, it is kinda important... having zerks that is...
Yes i dont dispute they are important. Never said they werent. I just didnt pay much attention to the talk about em sorry. I know it has something to do with greasing something under the truck. Oh yea i got under my truck yesterday. Heres the story:
Went to dairy queen. Came out this girl was out there and she was like nice truck i was like thanks (see its a chick magnet) we got to talking about a half hr. Well she noticed a puddle under my passneger side tire and asked me what it was. Well i check and i hit a puddle of water and it was leaking from the whole underneath of the truck. But i was like wow i didnt even notice it even though it was no big deal. Thats the story sorry to babble oh wait thats my name haha
up to 56K. Been on cable for about 18 months. works well when selecting "see all responses" on Edmunds.

IAS shocks. I got mine at shockwarehouse.com, $69.00 ea. With the 25% coupons, carparts.com has the best deal right now. Just that they can't deliver. Forgot who...may about 40-50 responses back said they were waiting about a month for delivery. Apparently, they got two and are waiting for the other two. Guess it's either price or service...
asking about Royal Purple. Two mechanic friends wee recommending the oil. Apparently, Porche owners swear by this oil, also popular in industrial applications. Found it at Napa for $6.99 a quart/ $5.99 ea case price. Bought a case. Have yet to try it though as I don't have my truck...
If you don't have anything heavy (like a house trailer) to tow, the 1500 should suit you fine. The 5.3 litre is pretty stout for only being 325 cubic inches, I suggest you drive one first before you take the plunge. Also, try driving the 3/4 ton with the 6.0 litre for S&G's if anything else. Yes, the bigger engine has more power and torque, but you take a hit on gas mileage. You gotta pay to play. Also the 3/4 ton weighs an additional 500 to 600 lbs more, so if you're into off the line performance (empty), I'd say the 1/2 ton's got it beat.
According to the 3/4 ton owners on this site, since it's heaver, it has a better ride.
Yes they are releasing a 325 horsepower 6.0 litre in the new GMC C - Series, (aluminum heads and a hotter cam), but in my opinion it's one of those car/truck hybrids. From the pictures I've seen, it has street tires and a new all wheel drive system, which probably doesn't have a low range.
If the 1500 5.3 litre doesn't have enough chutzpah for you (remember, it's not a car), there's always forced induction. If you want to shell out an additional 4k, Whipple makes a nice supercharger kit, featured in many trucking magazines.
I just bought my 2000 LS z71 and it was out of alignment, is that normal for a new truck? mechanic told me that chevy was sending a lot of them out, with alignment problems. other than that my truck is great! love the power from the 5.3 ltr. I traded in my 97 tacoma for it. the tundra did not seem as nice as the chevy. so I bought the chevy.
is a big jump..like going from a four banger to a V8...or like a tacoma to a vette...
jstockham If that was the only thing "wrong" with your truck...consider yourself lucky...I didn't consider the Tundra either...looked too much like a FORD.
I expect GM will continue to make the same engines, etc., available in both GMC and Chevrolet. If available for one, then also available for the other one. Bob
I agree though it might not be in the coming year as with the C series. Like the way they delayed the upgrading of the Denali and Escalade one year. Then again...Chevy doesn't have an equivalent to the Denali...
