There is no difference in apperance between the 4.8 and the 5.3. They are EXACTLY the same engine, except for a stroke difference (a few internal parts), and computer programming.

I have mine installed on the trim panel just below the gearshift lever when it is in drive. I have towed 40,000+ miles and you really need it close at hand because it's much safer that way. I know on my last truck I had it mounted in a somewhat less accessible place, and my wife could never seem to find it when needed to "trim" any sway. The somewhat less sanitary placement in my mind makes it much easier to use, and it really doesn't look that bad. I considered the placement a previous poster had used inside the disc storage area, but did not want the extra hassle to change the air conditioner filter which requires removal of this storage box, along with the rewire each time. I live in a hot area, and will change my filter often to keep maximum flow..
Placement is very important, make sure your installation works for you and is easily accessible in an emergency. My 2 cents

I mounted my controller under the dash, to the right of the parking brake. There is a magnesium support brace that runs the width of the cab that is located there. This is where I mounted it to. The controller was very small (techonsha) so it does not get in the way and can be adjusted if necessary when driving using your left hand.

How are we signing of on these posts? Oh yea, Good luck on this one now. LOL

I'll have to pass...the stereo installer advised me to keep my stock unit so that they could reinstall it when I bring the Kenwood in for annual cleaning and checkup.

Didn't get the towing package with my '99 as not avail in 1/2 ton 5 speed.

Ordered the harness from GM, but Tekosha sells 'em cheaper and has a very good description of how to tie the controllers in on the new Silverados....

Very happy with my Tekosha Sentinal, plus made and owned in USA.

Are the instructions for install on the website or do they come with the product?

    Thanks,

  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
I know for a fact, not sure about the website.

Pretty easy install, down below the parking brake is something GM calls the "high commander center" or something silly like that, you pull the little cover off, press the special 4 to 6 pin plug in the recepticle that says brake, then run your wires and mount the controller.

Thanks, guys, for the replies. Just wondering if this c-series is going to turn out to be a "heavy half" 1/2 ton. I guess it's just wait and see.

I'm not in complete agreement that the c-series is going to be a yuppie truck. The Avalanche is a different story. In my mind, a truck is a complete truck. It does not require some assembly or reconfiguration of the truck bed in the name of versatility or utility. But to each, his own. The one thing I do like about the Avalanche is the four real (super-crew) doors. I wish they made the current 2500 series (3/4 ton) that way. Ditto for the c-series. I'm not a Ford fan, but the 4-door supercrew with short bed looks really nice. I've got three kids and we will ocassionally pull a fifth-wheel camper or my boat. That's why I prefer 3/4 ton. Once again, wait and see. Wait for Chevy/GMC to catch up with other truck makers and get with a real 4-dr design, with handles on the outside, etc. Don't want any "weak links" either. Probably won't be ready to purchase until early 2001, so I'm in no hurry. Just keeping my eyes and ears open.

Thanks everybody. Have a good weekend.

    LUND Interceptor

  • werkingwerking Member Posts: 431
    jarvus -
gotta go with ryan on this one. haven't heard anyone complain about the interceptor. i have the bugflector too (purchased at Pep Boys for like, $40) but it does create a slight noise at high speeds (greater than 70 mph). if i had it all to do again, i'd get the lund. but...if you listen to the radio at anywhere above a BARELY audible level while you're driving, it won't bother you that much.

don't ask me how it slipped thru, but for some reason I didn't get a trailer package on my '00 2W. I'm not talking about towing big trailer rigs, just a small trailer for moving lawn tractors, etc. What would be my best options now if I wanted to get the trailering eauipment(hitch, etc): dealer, aftermarket, specialty shops? And what would I be looking at in price? I'm finding more and more uses for a little cart-type hauler.
I had a ARE lid put on and I'm sure liking it. Not sure about better MPG because of the lid being on. I haven't been on the open road to much yet, but getting around 16 around town.

The pictures that were mentioned are of my truck and brake controller. They are at www.picturetrail.com/dayle1 This installation did require some effort. This provides a clean setup that is also very accessible. I can give you more details if you are interested.

You mentioned pulling a 5th wheel and also the Ford Supercrew with short bed. By short bed did you mean 6.5ft bed or the very short bed? The F150 Supercrew only has 29 inches between the back of the cab and the rear axle, which is totally unacceptable for 5th wheel use. By comparison, the Silverado extended cab with 6.5ft bed is about 43 inches.

Yes I would really like the info on this install.

    Thanks alot,
    Jarvus

    Ryan and Kyle,

Got the bugdeflector already on order because they could color match the truck. BTW carmine red and I'm 24. (But I act alot older than that I guess)

I will be buying a 2001 Silverado (first truck)
when they hit the lots. I am thinking of getting a
non-fiberglass tonneau cover for reasons of (hoped
for) improved gas mileage. Plan on mostly highway
    miles.

    Feedback?

I will definately stick w/ my 1500 Silverado; ugly, very ugly.

I think your installer has a good idea. If you know of anyone that does want to sell one, keep me in mind.
    thanks
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Ok i take back the carmine old thing sorry.

I think my engine is finally broke in past 3 fill ups i havent got below 15 mpg and 75%-90% has been city. $2.03 a gallon will soon add up

Install on bug guard is easy. Screw it in to existing screws VERY SIMPLE..

    Ryan
  • werkingwerking Member Posts: 431
yes noises. reread my post. i said that you have the interceptor and that i have NOT heard anyone complain about it. but i have the BUGFLECTOR and HAVE heard some noise above 70 mph.

oh yeah, as far as simple goes on the install...the step bars weren't that hard either (granted, not as easy as the bug guard)...but still not that hard. but i guess that's another topic, altogether, eh mr. goodwrench???

just kidding ryan, just kidding...go have a nice weekend and pickup some more chicks with the puddle of condensate under your truck... :)

I didnt install my nerf bars so whats wrong with me having them installed. I didnt have to wait a few wks to get free time to put them on i had them already put on.

Actually i had lunch with the girl from dairy queen today. Might not have to pick up anymore chicks now.

Gotta work on the boat now.

  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I thought all the Dairy Queens closed down and was replaced by Baskin and Robbins...

Someone on another topic was talking about Chevy being the leader in new design and how they had desinged their trucks "rounder" before Dodge and Ford. I guess the SSR just proves him right again as this truck is really "ROUND". Now if it only came with an extended cab...just trying to imagine what that would look like...Don't think trucksrme would be interested in this one..it doesn't look like a "worker"...more on the yuppy side...

in Autoweek May 29 edition - good thru 6/30/00 and HotRod July 2000 edition - good thru 7/31/00 -both for 1/3 off.
I got mine for about $221 delivered with 1/3 off coupon. It took about 2 weeks to get them, but mine were for a 2WD. The price quoted seemed to change depending on when and who you asked, but seemed to settle down to the price cited above - salesman said IAS shocks price went up about a month ago.
Note: I beleive the 1/3 off coupon is not good with any other offers.

    Good luck.

Thanks. You must be right in that the outward appearance of the 4.8 and 5.3 are exactly the same. I thought there might be something that would distinguish between the two, but apparently not. Thanks, Bob. I still think GM should have at least put the 5.3 in big numbers on top of the engine along with Vortec since the 5.3 was an additional cost (list) of $800 more than the 4.8. Oh well no big deal, just me. Bob.
  • bob332bob332 Member Posts: 137
Glad to see you get on board about the carmine red color. It is very attractive, especially with another color for a two tone.

We will be at Indiana Beach next weekend. Family and friends are gathering there to surprise a couple who spent the first night of their honeymoon there on their way to Niagara Falls 45 years ago. How far it that from were you live?

Gas jumped again here today, now $1.759 per gallon. I am expecting to see $2.00 next week when we are in the Chicago area. Crazy!!! Bob
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
First off i never said i disliked the carmine color damn i can be misinterpted. I just said i had a theory and that was older people only get that color. SOrry i apologize

Indiana beach is about an hr and a half away. What expressway are you taking to get there??? You might drive by my area. Im from hammond more up north.

Gas here is $2.03 at shell. The cheapest is amoco which is $1.99 but will jump.

    Have a safe trip there.

You mentioned buying the harness from another company and installing it. Did yours come with the "Maxi Fuse" or at least instructions that you needed to possibly install one. The GM factory pig tail has a fuse taped to it with instructions on where to plug it in. I don't know which circuit it powers, but you might check. It is a 40 amp fuse and is almost an inch wide. The very cryptic instructions say "Plug-in 40A B+ Trailering Maxi-Fuse in Stud #1 location of UH Electrical Center".

I would think without that fuse completing the circuit one of the wires doesn't have the proper power, but I don't have a clue which one. I hope you've got it covered, but just noticed you only mentioned a wiring harness - not the fuse. It isn't installed from the factory.

Dairy Queen advertises in Texas that that DQ is the "Texas Stop Sign".

And literally they used to be on every corner - most all small towns still have at least one.

Ill have to choose edmunds. This keeps me very entertained. She will have to deal with it.

Ok on a serious note now how do you guys keep you windows clean??? I just washed my truck (its gonna rain tomorrow 100% chance) and the windows are still kinda dirty i hate it. I have this glass cleaner but i cant seem to get em clean i mean streaks and stuff stays on and also water spots. Any suggestions???

Also my truck is a damn bug catcher (zapper) i have so many dead bugs on the front.

Also i am now thinking of getting a lid and grill guard for my truck just to make it look more rugged. Kyle u think those people in the SUV post were scared before just wait have some super bright offroad lights shining at em now haha

I've heard dilute vinegar does wonders on windows
like 1 part vinegar to 9 parts water. Never tried it on car windows but works well on exterior house windows. Just an idea.

Thanks for the clarification. I mentioned getting the short bed, but I meant to say short box (6.5 ft). Long box makes an extended cab or crew cab truck way too long for me. By the way, I didn't know it was possible to get a short bed/box that's shorter than 6.5 ft.

A couple of people have posted with enthusiasm over their upcomming 2001 Silverado purchase. What's so special about the 2001's vs. 2000's? other than all the new motors are getting a few more horsepower?

Anyone have experience with shocks? Specifically, is it worth upgrading from stock 3/4 ton suspension and shocks to the new Edelbrock IAS's for less body roll better load capacity? Any difference?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
if you have to give edmunds up...try to negotiate to access, at minimum, being able to checkout this topic...Chevy Silverado...you could ask us what's going on on the other topics and we'll try to keep you updated... ;)

Just for information. My bug shield was causing the vertical window trim to flutter. At first the dealer refused to fix it. Said the bug shield was causing it to flutter and it wasn't GM installed. I talked to the salesman and told him that wasn't acceptable. I told him to talk to the service dept. Long story short - they had a glass company put urethane adhesive on the trim and the problem is gone. Red, you were right on the money! Thanks!

For the person asking about the cell phone option. I had it installed but I haven't used a cell phone with it yet. They wired a plug under the dash where the headlight switch is. I'm not sure what it's for but it's there. If anyone else knows I'd love to hear it.

I still think you got on board with Carmine Red, regardless of age attraction.

We will travel I 55N to Chicago, spend a few days there, then I 65S to Indiana Beach. Yes, we will be going very close to Hammond. I'll stop at the DQ and fill her in on that guy who goes to school and works at Menards and drives a 00 LT 4WD ext cab sb rails mud flaps budshield, indigo blue. Does anyone have anything for me to pass on to her on Ryan's behalf. Bob

Treyduhon, I can't speak to the Edelbrock IAS,
but I upgraded my 3/4ton Silverado 4x4 from the stock suspension to Bilstein shocks. The stock shocks were a strange combination of somewhat jarring over bumps and yet floaty in a sort of sea-sick kind of way. Even on the street, a bump would occasionally made the seat belt lock-up holding me down! I put in Bilsteins and the ride is far more controlled -- less jarring, yet it feels more taught and less floaty. The truck now handles more confidently and is more comfortable. I consider the money ($230) well spent. I've heard good things about the Edelbrock IAS, but don't know how they compare to the Bilsteins.
