    Subaru Legacy Wagon ... I'd say a '91 LS.

Father in law had one ... we inherited it when he passed a couple of years ago.

Drove it out to California last summer to give to my son as a HS graduation present.

140K and it never missed a beat on the 1100 mile trip from Colorado ... 30 MPG @ 75 MPH.

Since he's owned it, he's put on new tires and new brakes. The family chipped in and got him a new stereo (head unit and speakers) for Christmas.

    Here's a picture:

It's an early 90s Legacy Wagon. IIRC most were FWD.

I forgot about the Tempest's transmission in the rear - did it have some kind of independent rear suspension?

The Tempest was related to the Chevrolet Corvair.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120

Yeah, that was a time where Subaru was a bit schizophrenic about what they wanted to be.

I know that "Barney" was AWD, however. The few times I drove it in the snow I was pleasantly surprised at how stable it was.

Recent postings got me thinking about this car...

Yep, their sales bottomed out in 1994. They tried to be Toyota and failed.

In 1995 they went AWD only and every year for the next decade sales grew.

By the way, that Legacy has aged well, hasn't it? Still has clean lines 18 years later.

I've always thought that generation of Legacys were exceptionally handsome: smooth, clean, and unpretentious. The only strangeness in their styling was the little jog at the base of the side window, just above the rear wheel. Happily that was omitted from the wagon version. :)

The Tempest was related to the Chevrolet Corvair.

How so? The Corvair had a pancake aluminum six in back while the Tempest used an I-4 under the front hood (Iron block IIRC). They may have shared some transaxle and suspension components but that would make them distant cousins at best.

    I'm going to guess that is Ford's straight 6, 3.3l I believe, circa 1980.
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
Looks like a Chevy I6, and the badge on the air filter cover looks like it reads '194', so I'll guess it's the base I6 in a mid-60s Chevy II.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,668
Sorry Juice, Bumpy nailed it. The Stovebolt 6 resides in a '63 Chevy II.

The same platform. They're closer than distance cousins even though one has a front engine and the other is rear engined...and the engines aren't related.

This Tempest/Corvair talk makes me think General Motors once used to hire real mechanical engineers to actually develop products....

What year did they fire them all, to replace them with marketing men?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,668
The 1960 generation of Compact cars from GM had arguably the most avant garde engineering of any similar grouping from the Big Three. The contemporaneous compacts from Ford, Chrysler and AMC were doggedly conservative in comparison.

Aside from the revolutionary Corvair and Tempest, the 1960 Buick Special featured the aluminum block V8 that eventually found useful employment in a generation of Rover, Range Rover, Morgans and other British Favorites. The first Olds F-85 Cutlass could be ordered with the first ever Turbo-supercharged engines in a street car over a decade prior to Porsche and Saab. The Turbocharged Corvair Monza Spyders followed soon after.

Apparently the engineers were replaced by accountants and marketers sometime between '62 and '64, by 1964 all of the GM Compacts had been replaced by thoroughly conventional intermediates except the Corvair which soldiered on until it was dropped in 1970.

The Micholetti-bodied Hino Contessa from the mid-1960s.

Nobody wants to make a guess about the car pictured in post #15043?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,668
    Yep, it's a Hino Contessa 1300.

#15043 is an early 90's Legacy, the sedan version of the Legacy Wagon I posted.

Lostwrench and Magnette are both right. Mid 60s Buicks were handsome cars IMO.

The markings kinda give it away, 1978 Plymouth Fire Arrow. I believe it was an Arrow with a larger Mitsubishi engine.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
Yeah, I think it had a 2.6L 4 banger that made 120HP ... huge power for the day.

I had a similar engine in my '88 Isuzu Trooper .. didn't perform as well with over 2 tons of mass to lug around.

The hill in front of the school where the Buick is parked is pretty steep for it to have its wheels turned away from the curb. Let's hope the driver set the brake. :surprise:

    Is 15043 a Subaru Leone c. 1991/2 ?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It sure looks like a Legacy, but those headlights are different.

Thinking back, Subaru had a deal with Suzuki to swap cars, so I will guess that was a Suzuki clone of some sort.

    So Suzuki Legaclone. :shades:

    Sneaky, sneaky... a Subazuki!

This must have been the trade-off for the Suzuki Swift-based Justy sold in Europe.

That's gotta be the new Twingo (with whatever "sporty" suffix Renault uses now) .

Shame..... the original was a revolutionary, simple car in the early 90's when it was introduced.

Now it just looks like every other micro euro car.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,668

Yes. I don't recall Suzuki ever selling any Subaru product. Suzuki did supply Subaru with the Swift and Ignis, both sold as the Justy in Europe.

    1980ish AMC.

From the size and the nose, I think it is a Concord. I think it is too big to be a spirit.

Same door handles that I had on my '74 Hornet too, but not surprising, since it is basically the same car!

It's not an early LR, those would be late 40s early 50s. It is a SWB (88") 1964
    Land Rover Series 2A.

One of my college profs owned one like it, it was probably the only interesting car in the entire faculty car pool, (in those days most of 'em couldn't afford Volvos and drove
    stripper American sedans.).

Looks like some variant of the 4WD AMC Eagle to me. Tidester had an Eagle at one time and he really liked it.

The car looks to be a 1955-60 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. I was about to say the setting was Old City in Philadelphia, but it looks too hilly. Is it Beacon Hill in Boston? The cars way in the back, I can just about make out a 1959 Oldsmobile behind the Rolls-Royce and what looks like a 1959 Mercury across the street. Don't know the movie.
