....Corvair is such a great looking car, I especially like the now somewhat rare four-door hardtop.

Any idea what kind of Morris this is? I have no idea.

Morris Oxford Estate, a woody from the fifties?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
It doesn't quite look like an Oxford. Those are 50s Ford hubcaps. This seems to be a custom, perhaps? The grill? Very odd. Maybe some kind of Wolseley? And the wheels look way too big for an Oxford.
  • vchengvcheng Member Posts: 1,284
You are right, but something about the size and the hood and roof says Oxford to me. However, it could be a Wolseley variant, but I wouldn't know the name. I am sure somebody will have the answer shortly.

It was actually a Princess 2200 but its the same thing really - just the six cylinder engine.

The car next to it is a Maestro, I think, rather than a Montego - but I can't tell whether it is an Austin or an MG. Given it is at a car show, on balance it is probably anMG, in fairness.

Close enough (and sorry for the delay replying to these -I had to go to Wales...)

It's actually a Vauxhall L-type Velox, although there was a Wyvern which looked virtually identical. This was current from 1948/51, when it was replaced by the E-type Wyvern & Velox, which were the first proper post-war Vauxhalls.

This L-type was actually adevelopment of theimmediately pre-war 10Hp which was the first unitary construction Vauxhall (hence you hardly see any of those around now...)

I've seen a picture of this car before - and I can't remember what it was. Although the badge and the woody bit are Morris based, and the bonnet shape is about right, it is much bigger, and that grille is no Morris I've ever seen. I am going to have to research this a bit (basically look in books) as I am sure this car has been featured in something in the last few years - perhaps "the Automobile" or one of the Classic car monthlys.
I think it is some sort of custom possibly based on a Morris Six, but it might even be based on a conversion of a Morris-Commercial ( Morris built a large range of commercials).

I'd appreciate that, if you could snoop around.

The National Geographic program on Rolls Royce factory was really neat. Saw an episode on the Porsche 911 factory too.

The part on the assembly line where the drivetrain meets the body is called a "marriage". With Porsche it takes 5 minutes to attach it to the car. With Rolls Royce an hour and a half.

Only goes to prove, you don't always need to take a lot of time to build the better car :P
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
I saw the episode which showed the new Camaro going from sheet metal to the car being driven out the door.
Two workers on the assembly line have one minute to put in the wiring. The doors were painted while attached to the body, then removed, then attached again later down the line. Interesting.

That is interesting. If they mess up on the wiring do they just say "screw it" and let it roll on the assembly line unfinished? lol

And speaking of that it reminds me of an old Saturn commercial from the 90s where some assembly line worker said he stopped the assembly line because he found a broken retainer clip. I wonder if it's true and how often it happened (the stopping the assembly line part).

    To remain on topic:

Opel Kapitan or Admiral, ca. 1965.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
Yep, to be exact it's a 1966 Opel Admiral, essentially a German Chevelle with a good old Chevy small-block (283) under the hood.

    Mid 60's Volvo Sport.

Didn't they call that one the P1900 or something? They sold about 3 of them I think. I would put it at earlier than mid 60's, I think that the P1800/1800S was out by then.

The photos I found for that Volvo Sport have it mid '50s (1956 for one).
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
It's a 1957 Volvo P1900 Sport. I have no idea why they called it a P1900 since it was powered by a 1600cc motor. Not many were sold, IIRC the fiberglass body was by Jensen.

The green and white 57 Ford bothers me. It just doesn't look right. It's got the Skyliner top, but the rear end looks like a regular 57 Fairlane (a good thing). The rear end on the Skyliner was more of a vertical slab on the 57, and 58 too, without the rounded trunk.

I was wondering the same thing about the Mopar on the left - the rear window looks too big to me. As I understand it, these are all from his Franklin Mint collection. The other dioramas he's done impressed me with how realistic the cars looked, something I didn't know about the Franklin Mint models. This one, though, makes me wonder about that.

Cool....had one just like that (57 Skyliner) when I was in High School.......had lots of fun in that car. Drew attention every time I put the top down....
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,690
I loved the style of that year. Even a Sunliner had the right flair with the tailfins to be a looker.

Pink & white = 1957 Chrysler New Yorker two-door hardtop. Dark green & white = 1957 Ford Skyliner. Two tone green = 1958 Pontiac Bonneville. All three cars are Danbury Mint models and part of my collection.

Just the other day I saw a nice '67 Camaro SS and I said to myself "no marker lights means it's a '67!"

I actually thought the 57 Sunliner looked better than the Skyliner. Those hardtop convertibles had too big of a booty for me!
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Personally, I thought they really uglied up the 67/68 Plymouth. In general, I think early and mid 60's cars looked better than in the latter 60's. Some exceptions obviously. Of course then came the 70's and 80's with a lot of Yuck.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,130
In general I won't argue, but it's not like a '66 Fury is a 'looker'...
    image
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
Well, you didn't pick a very pretty '66 Fury I. Now if you had a mint '66 Sport Fury in red you might think it was a thing of beauty! I remember the old Fury II 'Silver Special' - all were silver with blue interior and 318 V8 - not bad for a reasonably priced car. Anyone got a picture???
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Basically a bar of soap with some chrome strips. Doesn't look like it took a lot of work to style it.

But your pix is of a 4-door sedan with doggy dish hub caps, so a 2D hardtop would serve the year much better.

Mopar is one of the few cars that actually improved in styling 1965 to 1973 or so, to say nothing of winning the HP race.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,130
Oh, you're right, a sharp 2 door coupe looks way better. I had to look a bit to find a 4 door sedan to compare to that taxi.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Mopars went from High Ugly in the early 60s to pretty spiffy by 1967 or so.

OK, I'll go along with that. Of course, after 61 they had nowhere to go but up, especially the Plymouth. 62 through 64, they improved fairly steadily (or at least didn't backslide). IMHO the 65s took a major step up in spiffiness (spifficity?) and held it at least through 67.
