From the looks of the reprint I got from GMPD, the 99-01 switch looks like it has a transistor in it that controls the LED orange dot. Yes it needs 12v to run but the way it is wired internally looks like this:
E D F

Sorry about the criptic drawing but the small box under the "D" is the power in to turn on the LED, the "B" goes to ground, and the line from the downside of the switch through "F" to "C" is the trigger voltage to turn the transistor "ON" to allow the power from "D" to go through to light the LED. Think of it as an internal relay.
From my limited knowledge of transistor electronics, you may be able to connect the "D" to a Headlight or Parking light "ON" source, then when the lights are on, and you hit the switch, the "F" and "C" closes and power is used to trigger the transistor and turn on the LED, but there may be enough residual power through the LED circuit to hold the auxillary lamp external relay on. It won't be enough to close the relay, but may be enough to hold it closed.
Guess you may have to play with this one and see how it works. Be careful though where you hook into the wiring as the computers in this vehicle don't like high amperage back feeds.
E-mail me if you want some further clarification, as I don't want to bore the rest of the group, when I go into training instructor mode ,hehehe

Vince,
About the spring squeak...I lubed my shackles with aerosol lithium grease. WD40 works for about a day. The oil is too thin to last. Yes, I spray between the leaves too, but the shackles are where the squeak is. Joelis probably has this right. Get the leaves replaced if dealer will do it for you. It's got me thinking...
Tim has sure turned into a yuppy now.

Just for ^#%^&# and giggles? Why didnt you go for your 2500HD???
its a 1500 isnt it? deep down you really wanted a 1500 now you got it
Ryan
Also can't get a drop in liner either.
Dean
Tim can put a spray in in the back. Seats and floors can be rhino lined haha.
How does his wife go from a mustang to a burb????

mike - me too! (on the LT's vs. P's)
randy - good advice on the spare...gonna go check mine out later today i think. thanks...
pat - yeah, i been messin' 'round in on some fire breaks...
tex - haven't changed the front axle or diff yet. replaced the rear axle with mobil 1 75w90 synthetic around the 7,500 mark based on recommendationn from my chevy service rep. he said the mobil 1 is good up to 100k miles if you don't tow/haul much. depending on how much you do tow or haul he said it's a judgment call. i think the manual recommends every 10k or 25k (can't remember which) under heavy towing conditions. plus, the mobile 1 is way less expensive than the gm goodwrench stuff your dealership will sell you.
oby - actually considered painting the bilsteins before mounting them...decided that was too much effort.
tim - you got a burb? huh? did i miss something...gonna have to scroll back a bit i guess...

I post so that others can learn from my experiences I guess. First of all, if you buy a truck, buy good non factory tires (big factory margin), tires that you want and will last. Secondally, take advantage of all programs, rebates, college grad, low interest, commercial (IE farmer, contractor, used for business can be 500 or so off or at Home Depot). They are nice trucks, they ride well lots of room, but be prepared for possible problems, that is why you have warranty to work the bugs out.
I guess when this one gets about 30k on it a year or so from now, ill try and trade for a 2002 HD 3/4 ton crew cab 6.0L, I just wish that GM would make a big enough gas tank in the sb, and would allow the allison tranny with the 6.0L (after my experience with the gm).
I wish all of you the best of luck!

Do you still like your Westin step bars? Would buy the same again? Been thinking about getting the exact same as you did, just wondering if you have had any second thoughts? Is $359 a best price? If not, what would you get instead? BTW, they look great on your truck.
Any 2500 owners given any thought to installing mud/debris flaps? If so, what kind?
John
what truck would be the best to buy (Topic #2282)
about the evaluation that edmunds did on the 2000 trucks where ford was evaluated as #1. She had posted a response along with this link. I thought it described the people who evaluated the trucks for edmunds to a T.

i have some mudflap pics
the link for them is at http://www.huskyliners.com
They are specially made for the factory flares. I really like them and have saved my truck from alot of debris.
Thanks
Tom
Ryan
Ryan, thanks I'll give it try.
Tom
However, did you like the article which link I had posted?
kalwood
welcome to edmunds.
On your lumbar support, there is no adjustment to raise or lower the support as it clips to the top of the seat frame.
On the rear seat a/c vents, I noticed that there is one duct supplying both vents and can't figure why one would have more output than the other. One reason could be that the cold air supply duct may be misaligned, somehow that doesn't figure. By removing 4 screws in the center console, you should be able to remove the console bin to see under it and check the duct alignment.
Hope this helps.

Pics in a few hours
Tim you cant take a pic of your neighbors new burb and pass it on as your own you know right???
Ryan
"Do you still like your Westin step bars?"
* yep, love 'em.
"Would buy the same again?"
* every day of the week and twice on sundays
"Been thinking about getting the exact same as you did,"
* the real question here is, who hasn't? LOL!!!
"just wondering if you have had any second thoughts?"
* seriously, none. they have held up great. of course, they're only 6 months old though too.
"Is $359 a best price?"
* shy of going home and checking my checkbook, yes, that sounds about right.
"If not, what would you get instead?"
* in looking, i didn't find ANYthing else that interested me. at least not with comparable price, looks and warranty
"BTW, they look great on your truck."
* thanks...

I just wanted to mention that the moon visors have a history of vibration complaints at highway speeds.
careyace
Did you ever experience this? If so, did you resolve it?
John
Your pics are nice, if I didn't look close I'd swear it was my truck minus the flares, tailight guards & 4x4 decal. Because I bought the optional 245 AT tires alot of people think it's a 4x4 without the decal, I put the ole "Heartbeat" logo where the 4x4 decal is normally located. The rhino lining looks like a quality application, here in upstate NY I have just started seeing adds in paper for it, so they are branching out evidentally.
Alright I've rambled enough, back to work for now seeeeeyaaaaa
