Richard, I can't believe you have withheld this gem of a story all this time! What a nightmare of a car. :lemon:

we discovered that the right rear passenger door would not open. It was repaired three times but never worked properly after the repairs.

I think my stepdad had the same problem (same door) with his 01(?) Deville.

Why not shop OTD because we ALL pay this.

Now I recall Seinfeld episode, when Jerry was buying a 5-series from Elaine's boyfriend, what's his name (actor Patrick Warburton). Elaine just split up so he grabs this paper-tape calculator and aloud lists charges (undercoating, rustproofing, surcharge, overcharge). It's been 10 years and it still feels just the same :D

Remember. Those six things happened over a period of three years. I have always believed that the car fell off the delivery truck and was repaired. I just think that the dealer never told it. BTW, the dealership went out of business in '05. I wasn't the least bit surprised. The unusual thing is that I never had a problem with the engine. The car actually ran fine.

I had a neighbor once who bought a Buick Skylark that had that many problems. His car stayed in the shop more than it did at his house. He also bought new.

Richard - don't let lemko see that story. He could have heart failure....

I'm almost sorry I mentioned the Solara but now someone has found where that story starts so lots of folks can be up to date. When you first came in with that I thought this new guy had lost his mind. Now it's better - I think this veteran of the boards has lost his mind but has really excellent grammar. ;)

My absolute worse repair experience was the first car I ever owned, a 1995 Chrysler Sebring. This was the first year of the car and introduced only as a hard top.

My warranty work during the first 12-18 months:

    1. Repair door cladding that separated from the body.
    2. Repair ABS
    3. Repair ABS
    4. Completely remove ABS and all wiring and replace ABS.
    5. Fix steering wheel which started feeling really loose.
    6. One other thing that completely escapes me, but I remember getting an awesome Ford Pickup as a rental since they were out of courtesy cars.

Now after this debacle, I kept the car for 65 months and 102K miles and never paid for anything other than maintenance, tires, battery and brakes. So, it worked out.

Thank you golic...that really helped. Well, that was quite an experience going back in time. Many of the same faces here today which is nice to see. Also, some interesting threads, picked up on doc fees about 2 years ago. Some really good sales stories from Mac and British Rover too. One day I'll have to start at the beginning and read through all 40,000 posts.

Richard, once again that was quite a story. I don't know for sure but I guess you never actually got the Solara. Funny how life works...although the Solara would have cost more my guess is (since Toyotas seem to have few problems of the magnitude you have experienced in 2 D3 cars) that your wife would still be driving around in her little Solara today, and you wouldn't have had to trade - and you could still be looking for a GM!

Richard I have to ask you this, you had a previous generation Sebring ragtop. I stopped next to one yesterday and it appeared to be much smaller. Is that right or was it just my perspective?

It's funny that you mentioned the size of the old one as compared to the size of the new one. My wife and I discussed the same thing. The new one seems wider. I noticed it when I drove into the garage and parked it next to the Explorer. It seems like there is a few less inches between the parked cars. Something else that we definitely have noticed is that the new one sits up higher. It's much easier to get in and out of with my leg problem. I guess we could do some measurement research to make sure.

"I think this veteran of the boards has lost his mind..."

You are correct. Years ago when I taught school, my students thought that I was crazy. I had excellent classroom discipline. They were scared to death of me. :P

I decided to go back and look myself. No, I never got the Solara. I hope that you saw posts 17486 and 18059 because they both showed that the dealer never kept his word about wanting to help me get another car. It was just a scam to unwind the deal and get rid of me.

Looking back, I should have driven up to Virginia Beach and purchased one from Mack. He and I were discussing that just the other day. As you say, it is strange how things work out at times. I always believe that there is a reason for things, and that things usually work out for the best. I'm really just as happy with the new convertible.

BTW, Mack's cancer is on the move again. He's feeling pretty good though. He is on a trip to Panama to see family. When he returns, he's going to a reunion in Texas with old musical buddies. He loves his new car. He's making the best of his time---enjoying his family and friends. He sends his best to all of you.

    Richard,
I would normally let this pass, but since you have been anointed as the One True Keeper of the Flame (of proper use of the language), I just had to give you a hard time about this:

You said, "It seems like there is a few less inches between the parked cars."

Didn't you mean to say, "It seems like there are fewer inches between the parked cars"? ;)
  • jmonroejmonroe Member Posts: 8,989
I already have stored a hat in the car for when I have the top down as the good Lord has found it necessary to remove any natural protection on the top of my head.

Funny that it was never "necessary" for that to be done to me !!! You and Richard musta done something bad at least once. :surprise:

My favorite one, happenned to a co-worker, "Escrow waiver fee".

When we refinanced a few years ago I ran into that but I had to have them explain to me what the fee was because it wasn’t written on the closing documents as “Escrow Waiver Fee”, which is what it was, but it was disguised as something else. When the fee was explained to me I said, “remove it”, the closing attorney said, “that fee is always charged for that service, it’s standard practice”. I explained it to him again, “remove it (no I didn’t say please) or I’m not going to refinance”. Everyone in the room looked at me like, WHAT , including Mrs. jmonroe. They excused themselves from the room to confer. Mrs. jmonroe said, “what are you doing”? I told her there is no way I’m going to pay that fee (I think it was around $300) for that garbage. I added that it’s bad enough I’m paying other fees for the right to re-buy my own house so I’m not going to allow them to add insult to injury with that s&*#.

Guess what, the fee was removed. After all the papers were signed because I didn’t ask how they went about not charging me that fee even though it was still shown on the form, the attorney said, “that fee had to be paid by someone, aren’t you curious who paid it”? I said, “No, I don’t really care as long as it wasn’t me”. I guess that bother him because he said, “in case you’re interested, your mortgage broker, the bank and my firm split the fee”.

I guess curiosity bothers some people more than it does others. :confuse:

Oh, you have to be careful with those verb pills. They don't build up an immunity to faulty noun verb agreement...

Say hi to Mack. I'm happy to hear he seems to be going about things the way he wants to. Best to him.

I wonder about those Solaras. I remember when the convertibles first came out. The reviews weren't up to what I expected. They sure as heck hold their value. Every time I browse the used ones the prices are up there.

"...Guess what, the fee was removed..."

You should have waited a few more years. By that time they were making loans where they waived the fees, the interest and the need to pay the principle. I bet you got one of those "have to pay it back" loans. Sucker! :P

You're right, I did. But now you have me thinking about that, so what do you think of this?

I'll destroy my credit like a lot of home buyers over the last few years by letting Mrs. jmonroe buy her dream house. Then I'll buy my Genny, cry foul, and have suckers like you pick up the tab. One more dead beat shouldn't hurt the masses. That will be the best bail-out of all. :P

On future closing statements, there will probably be a fee called "Federal Mortgage Assistance Fee---$500". After all, we want to help those who confused a $500,000 house with a $200,000 house.

One thing Winston Churchill did say, that is very appropriate today goes something like this.

"The problem with capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings.... and the good thing about socialism is the equal sharing of misery".

I do agree that any fees and costs should be disclosed prior to entering the business office.

As for your million dollar dealer fee,......you are a silly billy, arent you? That would be excessive and just a fluff charge. ;)

Years ago (around 1977 or 78) I needed a used car. I went to a local car dealership that sold strictly used cars. Not that it matters, but this particular dealership is still in business and very big in selling used corvettes and corvette parts nationwide, still owned by the same family. The car I test drove was a 71-74 mercury comet and when we got back to the dealership the engine was smoking a little bit. Smoke wasn't billowing out, it looked like someone was dropping oil a drop at a time on a hot engine. The owner said the car just came in and said they would take care of it. They even offered to give me the name of the previous owner and said I could call him up, to ask about the car. When I called the guy he said, avoid the car like the plague. He than proceeded to tell me about it's troubled past. Fast forward to June 2007 when my daughter was trading in her 2003 rav-4 (which was great little suv) on a 2008 tsx. I told Randy our salesman, that if he has a serious qualified buyer who wants to talk to me about the rav to just give me a call. I said maybe I can help push them over the edge. I felt hearing it from me about what a great car the rav was would carry more weight since I didn't have a horse in the race. Randy is a good guy and I wanted to help if I could. I know today things are different w/ HIPPA and other rules. My question is, would you ever ask certain good/repeat customers (not all customers) if they would mind if you contacted them concerning the car they just traded in. Is this a common practice? Do any of you in the business do this. Randy never called, and I was the one who suggested this, not him.

gp....worst is now behind you, my man!

Old favorite hangover remedy......drink tons of water. Sneak in some White Castle burgers (might want some take out 'cause you don't want to be in public after eating those). Lastly, one (and only one) shot of vodka with a healthy dose of tabasco added.

    You'll be good to go.

I'm not in the biz, but this topic has been debated before, and no one in their right mind will give out the name of the previous owner, too many ax murderers out there.

I wouldn't do it for many reasons.

Privacy laws prohibit us giving away previuous owner's info.

The previous owner's opinions of the car might be detrimental to the sale, even if there was nothing wrong with the car.

It opens up a can of worms if the previous and prospective owner start discussing what it was traded for, and what it's being sold for, without an in depth understanding of reconditioning costs, markup and pricing. It might end on a sour note.

We're (the dealer) the ones doing the selling and not the previous owner, so they shouldn't be subjected to phone calls from prospective buyers, especially if they have no monetary interest in the vehicle anymore.

If the previous owner wanted to be hassled about his previous car he would have sold it privately, not traded it in. Most people trade it in because they don't want to be bothered with countless phone calls and don't need the hassle.

Even if the previous owner would encourage me to give any prospective buyers their number, I wouldn't do it for privacy reasons.

  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    All good reasons.

No good can come from a phone call to the previous owner. The buyers will try to pry every last detail of the sale out of the seller and often the seller has no idea that we had to spend 1500.00 to bring it into top condition.

MAny times the person trading a car proudly hnds us a thick folder jammed with every service receipt the car has ever had.

" I'm sure the new owner will want to see these"

Yes, I'm sure he/she would but Privacy Laws prevent this from happening.
