First of all enjoy your trip!!
As for the Impala, I've had several as rentals. There is nothing that bad about the car (except the curiously small backseat despite the size of the car) but it certainly isn't anything special.
I've had fairly base model examples up to fully loaded LTZs and they are all just solid transportation. If I didn't care about cars I would say a one or two year old model would be a heck of deal.
The model you are driving is a GM "W" body and the last of it's kind. It was the platform for the Grand Prix, Cutlass Supreme, 1st Gen LaCrosse, Regal, Lumina, and a few others I've probably missed. It has roots back to 1988. The new Impala coming will be light years ahead and based off the Epsilon platform.

It does everything OK, and it is fairly big and strong, but it isn't what I would call a fun car, or particularly enjoyable to drive. Appliance is the word that comes to mind.
Last summer I went to visit my Delray Beach brother with my other brother who lives in the adjoining burg to me. He found an unbelievable weekly rate on an Impala; a little less than $80 all in. The trunk of that thing is a cave as I’m sure you have found out. It can hold more than my Genny which I thought was a pretty good size trunk in its own right. I’d be willing to bet the Impala trunk is bigger than your 5er. Here I am sounding like my father and uncles when they bought cars back in the 50’s always compared trunks.
The sad part of this tale is he liked that grocery getter well enough that he bought an ’11 demo from a local dealer a few months ago and from what he told me he got a great deal. That is, if there is such a thing with an Impala.
Not my kind of car but it’s got a big trunk, though.
Have a nice vacation with the kids and grandkids.

So, it looks like a little more coughing and a little more being short of breath, bu hopefully I will improve shortly.
Mike, I hope you’re feeling better soon but I have also heard, like when my Delray Beach brother had legionnaire’s disease (which is a form of pneumonia), pneumonia takes a while to get over.
What you’re going though reminds me of how I felt the first time I had the wind knocked out of me when I played football as a kid ’at first you’re afraid you’re going to die, then you’re afraid you won’t'.
Hang in there.

I'm hanging, to be sure! Unfortunately, mostly around the house! Thanks *jmonroe!
You do remember that I live about 10 minutes south of Delray. My brother lived in the Meizner Country Club off Lyons and just south of Atlantic Avenue. He lives up near St. Augustine now, I think it's called Ponte Verde Beach, south of Jacksonville. But he paid 2 million for his Delray home and sold it for 1.5 million. That's just an example of how much value has been lost in real estate.
We bought our condo for $140,000 back in 1992 and we'd be lucky to get $50,000 today for it. What can I say!

Yes, I seem to remember you saying that.
My brother like so many retirees down your way in southern Florida, lives in one of those over 55 gated joints. It’s off of Hagan Ranch Road, nice place alright, not sure what he paid for it (none of my biz but it was north of $500K about 6 years ago). I’m sure if he sold it tomorrow you guys would be taking a bath in the same lake.

I know the area - north of Atlantic Avenue. Yes, that is what my Dad and I live in - a gated retirement community but 20 years older. Most of the people's ages here is "deceased" if you know what I mean. I've tried to get him to move a little further north, but he is obstinate. He is 90 years old and still going strong, but he suffers from the start of dimensia. His memory is ver, very bad, but we've ruled out Alzheimer's Disease. I do all the cooking and shopping and with my being sick, it's put quite a burden on me. So, as long as he is alive, I'm stuck here. Just don't like the area, but we are adjacent to the turnpike which makes travel very easy.

The Cutlass Supreme was on the A-body and then G-body from 81-88. The Impala and Gran Prix were W-body vehicles. I didn't research the Lumina.

My store closes for vacation starting Saturday Noon. I can't wait. Sunday we're driving from our home here in Stamford, CT to family's house in Leesburg, VA. After spending a few days there, we'll be driving down to Charlotte, NC to visit family. From Charlotte, we are going to drive back up to Hershey Park & Dutch Wonderland in PA. We're very excited!
NYC.....how cool was that to share with your sons.
Sounds like a good time for vacation. I used to work in Leesburg, VA right after college for Xerox. They had a huge training facility there, and I was one of the trainers. Loved living there in the country, knowing Georgetown was a hop, skip and jump away.
I love Charlotte, too. Hershey can be fun, if your family has never been there.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
The BIL bought his condo near St. Pete's around 2004 for $80k and at the height of the market it was worth $120k. Just this week I was looking at area real estate listings and found a condo just like his in the same development for $39k.
We've been planning a move there as soon as we can unload our place but the market stinks in NY too. I wish I had enough cash to pick something up and sit on it until I can retire. Seems only Canadians are rich enough to do that. :P

BTW, at our house we've been dancing around the subject of getting a new vehicle due my wife deciding our college age kid can take a car to school next semester.
My first thought was, wife buys new vehicle, passes her 09 Escape to oldest kid, oldest kid passes 04 Escape to college kid and sell 10 year old Explorer.
Wife's original idea, give college kid 10 year old Explorer.
I don't like that because it a seven passenger vehicle and would be more comfortable with something that held less passengers.
I don't want it becoming the dorm and field hockey road trip bus.
Wife's latest idea, pass the cars down and she drives the 10 year old Explorer.
I like it because she will be motivated to buy a new car with no pressure to get something done, before school starts next month.
Also, I went to the game Saturday. 3rd game at the new stadium and I finally saw a win.
I have to admit, it has a giant trunk and it did come in handy carrying our luggage and a few boxes of groceries to this remote place.
The Impala does everything it should do, fairly competently too, but not a car that will thrill you. I rented one for a long trip about 15 years ago and I think they have improved everything slightly since then, but just enough to make it acceptable. There are big hills with gravel on the logging road and it is pretty lazy at going up hills, and the brakes aren't great coming down. The Impala is probably a good value if you just want strong, solid transportation to get you from A to B....with lots of room, but it certainly doesn't rate high on the enjoyment scale.
One other thing, if you ever rent a car like this don't tell them you are going on a logging road. They almost didn't rent me the car when they asked where I was going. He said the engine, door jams and trunk will be full of dust and he will charge me $150 when we return the car to have it cleaned up!
There are guys who come to this remote place every year....costs about $500 a day for lodging, meals and guided fishing boats. These guys were so smashed one fell out of his chair on to the patio. I thought he had a heart attack, but all the others were killing themselves laughing as they helped him up. Not my idea of a good time but it was amusing watching them.

Was it the Empress Hotel?
That is one beautiful hotel, and they serve tea in the afternoon just like in England. Victoria is a very beautiful city, on the ocean, and with lots of flowers. Never snows there, temperature is moderate too, because of the Pacific Ocean.
We are in a small town on the West Coast Trail. I am going crazy missing civilization, but the kids and grandchildren love this kind of life. I like to buy my fish at the grocery store, not have to catch it and look at it while I gut it.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
I agree, it is competent but lackluster. You would think with a design going back to 1988 they would have paid for the R&D costs 10X over, and could knock these off for about $15000. I think that is as much as i would pay for a new one. I feel like i would be driving a fairly decent car....if this was 1978!

No, *driver, it was a few miles (kilometers) from there. I do remember the Empress Hotel, though, as we ate dinner there a few times. The place I was talking about was made up of several large cottages and manor houses with the restaurant in their main hotel. You had to walk from one manor house to another. The rooms were suites with old English furniture and dressing rooms. I just remember the Inn was spread out among several buildings. Another thing I remember is that it was very, very expensive - over $3000 for a week, which back then was a lot of money.
I wonder if they are still in business.

While shocking the salesman was so blunt in informing me about how to fill out the survey, can't say I blame him. I thought I gave really good scores to the saleslady when I purchased my new 2004 MPV, only to find out later she "failed" because I put in a couple "9's instead of "10"s. I don't want the salesperson to suffer because the system sucks. The guy probably doesn't deserve all 10"s, but I told him I would give it to him as he stayed over about 2 hours after closing. Actually heard him on cellphone catching "heck" from his wife on being late. i.e" I'm still with a customer honey, I'll be home as soon as I can." Sheesh... can you say "whupped"? :P
While not trying to blackmail anybody , I am planning on trying to get dealership to rotate my tires at no cost. At 6,000 miles, they are due to be rotated. I think I'm justified in asking for that, as when you buy a "new" car, you expect not have to pay for an oil change or tire rotation a week after buying the car. The dealership did change my oil for free two days after my buy. :shades:
Victoria is almost like being in England. There are actually lots of very expensive hotels and cottage type places to stay in on the island.
It is a beautiful area, lots of plants, large trees, and birds etc and great fishing if you are into that.
They showed on the news further north of here people were picking up junk from the Tsunami in Japan. This guy was picking up junk just for the fun of it and his practically new big Dodge deisel pick up got stuck in the mud. Some people tried to pull him out but it wouldn't budge. Then the tide started to come in and the guy was pretty upset as he watched his $50k truck get swallowed up by the water. Not sure if the insurance would cover it.

I don't consider "blackmail" your attemp to get them to rotate your tires. That should have been done before you took delivery. What's right is right!
The system they have in place in all new car dealerships to attempt measuring consumer satisfaction with their new car and the degree they felt good about the sales process and experiences is horrendous and in no way actually measures customer satisfaction. All it measures is how well the dealership coached the customer on how to fill out the survey.
If manufacturers really want to measure CSI, they should "randomly" call a sample of new car customers on the phone - perhaps a 5% sample would be accurate enough. This way, it would be impossible for a dealership to coach a customer effectively if the questions being asked are unknown to the dealership and who would be sampled is another unknown.
But to survey every customer using the same survey form just breeds the slimy salespeople who improperly coach. When I bought my Mercedes E350's in Delray, no one even mentioned the survey - even after 5 new car purchases. Bit my BMW dealer in West Broward coaxed me after each sale and after each service. So did my Lexus dealership where I just bought my GS350.
So, in summary, if they really want to know the truth, they should do a simple random sample and ask open-ended questions, not multiple choice or, "...on a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your experience...". Those surveys tell them nothing at all!

I think it means home values didn't go down here and people didn't lose as much money in the banking fiasco......so our net worth didn't get hammered in the same way. I suppose there is something positive about having the govenment regulate banking and house buying...just to keep those industries a little more honest!

Yes, *driver, Victoria is truly a wonderful place to vacation if you want to just "kick back" and leisurely enjoy a respite for a week. It is like leaving the real world for a while because the whole eastern end of the island is devoted to relaxation.
I always returned from Victoria feeling refreshed and invigorated. Unfortunately, it is no longer a 2 hour flight and a 2 hour leisurely ferry ride. It would be a 5 - 1/2 hour flight to get to Seattle from Miami. A trip up to northern Minnesota would be a lot closer in order to get the cooling breezes (off Lake Superior) like in Victoria with Pueget Sound.
Even Seattle is a nice place for a cool vacation, but nothing like Victoria!

There are people who will never be satisfied and they are chronic complainers who will always find fault and will never give a good score.
Then there are people like me who wouldn't want to see someone lose their bonus or their job because of a complaint I might make. I would do it, but they would have to be really bad...and if they were that bad i don't know if I would have bought a car from them.
So, I think you are right...the survey is completely meaningless. Unless, you see constantly bad comments or a pattern of the same complaints, but that should be used as a teaching tool, not as a way to reward sales people.

I just remembered an experience I had when I was selling cars at my first dealership around 2004.
We had a greeter who took the customer's name and then introduced the customer to the next salesperson in the computer queue. I was introduced to a young married couple who were looking for a full-size luxury sedan. I would always ask specific questions of each customer to best determine their needs, preferences, vehicle use, to name a few. I determined from the answers they gave that the vehicle was used quite a bit on the highway as he was a sales rep for a pharmaceutical company and covered the state of Floida from Tampa/Orlando south to Key West. He needed something that had lots of power and provided a very smooth, comfortable ride.
I walked them over to our flagship sedan which was loaded with NAV, up-graded audio system, ventilated seats, etc. I demonstrated all the features and benefits of the luxury sedan and then pulled up a demo. I drove them both off the lot and stopped about 2 blocks away so he could drive the car. I sat in the back while his wife sat in the front passenger's seat. he wanted to go on the turnpike to test the ride at highway speeds, which was not an unusual request.
He entered the turnpike and immediately floored the accellerator as the car approached 90 miles per hour. I cautioned him about his speed, but paid no attention to my "pleas" as I sat in the back and thought I would "excrete" a brick. He exited the turnpike and started making fast lefts and rights which threw me against each rear door - I had not buckled my seat belt. He then began to accellerator and then abruptly brake, accellerate and brake, until I hit my head on the right rear door and severely injured my right shoulder. I screamed at this guy to pull over, but he paid no attention to my screams. I literally began to cry I was in such pain - my head was bruised and my right shoulder was killing me,
The wife told her husband that enough was enough, so he pulled over and stopped. I was in such pain, I could not get out of the car. He asked if I was OK, and I told him to drive back to the dealership - that I thought I had broken my shoulder.
When we arrived back at the dealership, I could not get out of the car. I called the manager on my cell phone and he came running out. I told him I needed to go to the emergency room. He questioned the driver about what had happened and his wife explained that her husband had put the car through its paces to make sure it was safe and responsive.
To make a long story even longer, I ended up in surgery the next morning with a torn rotator cuff of my right shoulder. The couple bought the car for almost MSRP but I had to split the deal since I was taken to the hospital and couldn't finish the deal.
Of course the we're apologetic, and in conclusion, I made $1300 in a split commission and was out of work for 2 months in a shoulder cast. I had to collect workerman's compensation.
This experience taught me and the dealership a good lesson - never trust a customer behind the wheel of any demo - it can cost you more than you can imagine. I never again let a customer drive on the highway again without first acquiring authorization from a manager and without first laying down the ground rules for the test drive.
When I became a sales manager at another dealer, I set a policy that required manager approval to allow a demo drive on a highway. This world is made up of very "crazy" people - but you can't predetermine who they are until it's too late!

When I sit in the front seat, always, but I was sitting in the back at the time. What I did learn was not to sit in the back again because those seatbelts were difficult to locate and click. I never heard from that couple again and since the survey is sent to the first salesperson on the deal, I did not get evaluated by them.
If I had done that to a salesperson, I would be too embarrassed to show my face in the dealership again.
I still get pain in my shoulder every so often from that injury! It was definitely not one of the high spots of my automotive career!

To be perfectly blunt about this, a car at a new car dealership that has 6K miles on it should be sitting there with a recent oil change and with the tires already rotated. The car should have been ready to take off the lot when the papers were signed without having to take it in for maintenance work right away regardless of who was paying for it. My experience with Mrs. j’s XG350 is an exception to the rule with a Hyundai I’m sure and I wish you a long uneventful life with your Veracruz but your Hyundai dealer doesn’t sound too much different than the one I had my problem with.
This is the difference between a questionable dealership and the ones that Mike worked for that I mentioned before. I doubt that any demo at Mike’s place would have needed the customer to think about maintenance of any kind until it got to the mileage specified in the owner’s manual.
Again, I’m confident that you won’t have the same problem with your car that Mrs. j had with hers and I wish you luck with it but I don’t think too highly of your dealer from what you have said so far.

Well, all they really need to do is change the way they score the test. Score it the way you would a high school or college test. A "7" would be average, "8" very good, "9" excellent, and a "10" perfect. Since most reasonable people think anything "8" and over is good, that should be considered a "passing" grade, making salesman and gm eligible for incentive pay. Make any score below a "7" an automatic fail. That way a salesman would be less tempted to "coach" knowing he didn't have to be perfect, which few if any really are.
I am cautiously optimistic reguarding this dealership. Unfortunately this dealership group has cornered the local market on Hyundai dealerships... two. I really didn't want to buy out of state, or make a 45 minute drive to next closest dealership. So they were the only reasonable choice.
Hopefully they will be overjoyed to rotate my tires. At a meager $24, it shouldn't be too painful to them. I often see tire rotations offered for free, so shouldnt be a big deal. Going in to buy a bottle of touch up paint today (Got first chip in paint
so, from a performance standpoint, a 3 would mean you get your basic reward. Only a 2 or 1 would require remediation. 4 or 5 could get you a little extra maybe?
and you do need to take an average. That way, you smooth out the effects of one disgruntled character, or someone that grades really tough!
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
All maintenence must be done at the Hyundai dealership. All maintence must be performed using the "severe" driving maintenance schedule. i.e oil changes every 3,750 miles (normal is every 7,500 or one year), transmission fluid changes every 30,000 miles (normal is no need to change, it is a closed unit), rotate tires every 7,500 miles, fuel injection service everry 30k miles, filters, wiper blades etc etc etc.
I could proably live with the above. But under conditions of warranty it states,"Customer agrees to follow all regularly scheduled maintenance recommendations." So, if they recommend a brake flush, new brakes or any else, I have to comply or risk voiding the warranty. All inspections repairs have to be done withing 250 miles of applicable mileage recommendation, customer must keep all maintenance receipts from date of purchase... failure to present receipts or this certificate will result in denial of any claim... and the big one, dealer reserves the right to make all decisions regarding the qualifications in this program. Meaning I miss a wiper blade change... they can deny my warranty.
I guess this dealership could really ring up the necessary "recommendations" to makeeven more money on this. Can't really see keeping this car past, maybe 10 years (150,000 miles) anyway... kids will be out of school... hopefully.
Couldn't help thinking of jmonroe when I first read this. I could spend a lot of money, that I proably wouldn't normally spend, keeping vehicle eligible. Then dealership could pull the warranty over the smallest detail.
I'm at about 80% in not doing it at this point. We do not drive in severe conditions, about 80% of mileage will probably be interstate.
Did look into Hyundai's extended warranty. About $1,500 for gold package 10 yr/100k mile bumper to bumper. I have up until 10,000 miles until price changes, so will think about it.
The short answer is, forget it!
they have so many rules and stipulations in that warranty that you are going to forget to do something, and they will catch you on it. And, the warranty is going to cost you about $3000 or more by the time you do all this extra work on the car.
I don't like to accuse the dealer of actually scamming, but I think this is a warranty for the naive, and possibly people who just worry too much.
It would make sense if the warranty cost $X and you just followed the normal maintenance routine. It sounds to me like they have this all figured out so it will never work to your advantage.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
Probably ends up being cheaper pocketing all those charges, doing them elsewhere as needed, and buying your won tires (besides, you would get whatever tires they feel like putting one, and I doubt they will be top of the line Michelin.

Quite an experience, but it must be hard to judge who is going to be responsible and who isn't? I mean this guy is looking at expensive cars, he has a good job, his wife is with him, so you would think he would be a pretty safe bet.
I am not sure how you could really protect yourself and still let responsible potential customers take the car for a spin. The best sales experiences I have had are when the saleperson lets me (and usually my wife) take the car out on our own. That way we can discuss the car while we are driving it...it usually ends up in the favor of the salesman. Driving 2 Audis sealed the deal on that purchase.
I think the guy you had to deal with is just an unfortunate hazard of the job. Unless they could give you a remote control that would turn the car off when you wanted.

I’ve already told you what I think of your dealer. As for an extended warranty based on the discretion of the dealer ("dealer reserves the right to make all decisions regarding the qualifications in this program."), I’d be out. No more consideration being given to it. This warranty has more loop holes than you could keep track of.
As I said before, the 100K mile warranty that came with Mrs. j’s XG350 wasn’t worth a sh** so why would I think that the upcharge to get more of it would be any better, especially at your dealership.
That’s the way I look at it.
jmonroe

Right on stick! A warranty isn't a warranty when there are so many rules, regulations and restrictions you couldn't possibly do them all. And, as you said, the cost is going to be way greater than any potential savings for repairs.
If the car starts costing too much it would be better to use the $2000 or $3000 this warranty will cost, and use that money to get a new car.
What would they do if you were say, on a vacation trip and needed one of their 3000 mile oil changes? Do you still have to bring it back to them?
Should you get another extra oil change before you leave on your trip so you won't have to get one on your vacation?
It's just nonesense. In fact, it sounds kind of shady, first they tell you they will sell you a warranty, and then after you buy the car they tell you what's involved.
I am not saying that changes the value of the car - the car is fine, and probably won't need an extended warranty - I just think it makes the dealership kind of questionable.

Most surveys "are" a 5 option response. What I was trying to eliminate was the survey itself! So long as salespeople and dealerships know everyone is getting the same survey, and that a perfect score is required for bonus, etc., the evaluation of a dealer's performance in the sales process will never, ever accurately measure the truth! Salespeople and dealerships will pressure customers until the end of time do long as their incomes are determined by responses on surveys.
If you go the route of a simple random sample (statistically a sound method of gauging attitudes and opinions of the total population +/- 4 points) by sampling 5% of new car customers (which Neilson and other samplers use all the time) and ask open ended questions to measure this process:
*Hat did you like most about your experiences?
- please be specific
*What did you dislike about this process? Please be specific
*What could the dealership and salesperson do to make this process easier and moe enjoyable?
*How was the length of tmie it took to complete your transaction? How could this have been improved?
These are just examples of what a "live human" representative (as opposed to a recorded question/answer process) should pose during a phone interview, which could be recorded with the customer's permission.
And, even better, remove the "incentive" bonus from this process so dealers and salespeople are not motivated to coach.

Are you kidding me? I'd be 200% against getting a scam warranty like that! It seem written specifically to give them an excuse to deny your claim while milking you to death.
Service the car on the regular schedule and start a rainy day fund with the difference over severe service and if something ever happens you'll probably have enough to by a new car.

Good luck,
