do with the ignition lock on the steering column. I brought mine into the dealer last week and they fixed it in about 10 minutes. I found out about the recall when I had called customer care for a different reason and the person their informed me of the recall when she input my VIN number into the computor. She also told me that I should not drive the car and that I should have it towed in.
I dont want to scare anyone, but she told me that the ignition component could fall out and cause the steering wheel to lock while driving. If it means anything, I drove mine to the dealership because I work only a few miles away. I would give Infiniti customer care a call to make sure this is what they are calling you about.
Good luck.
Thanks for confirming it.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 00V410000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:OTHER PART
Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC
Mfg. Campaign #: 00V410000
Year: 2001
Make: INFINITI
Model: QX4
Potential Number of Units Affected: 9200
Manufactured From: OCT 1999 To: MAR 2000
Year of Recall: '00
Type of Report: Vehicle
Summary:
Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. These vehicles may have an ignition lock assembly with improperly seated key cylinder cap connector pins. Vibration can cause the connecting pins to loosen and/or fall out allowing the key cylinder cap to disengage from the key cylinder.
If this occurs, the steering wheel lock rod can move, which could lock the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will inspect the ignition lock assembly and assemblies with loose or missing end cap connector pins will be replaced. A ring clip will be installed on all others to prevent loosening of the pins. Owner notification is expected to begin during December 2000. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261. Also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
Still the best SUV on the road today!!!!!!
Thanks for the information!!!!!
Jimmy
It is just between rain and heavy snow conditions, could you leave the car in awd?
Has anyone here read the Edmunds review?
TC
Hope this helps, Happy New Year,
Jimmy
The one thing that still bothers me about this vehicle is that for a luxury SUV, it's still missing some obvious features, like a trip/systems computer.
And we already own a '97 Pathy, so I have no problem with the styling. But it's just that it's nothing more than a PF with some extra panels on the side.
As to the quality, where are the QX4s assembled? Is it a different plant than the PFs? I don't doubt the quality because the PFs are pretty damn reliable. Just curious.
peddle movment during braking?
Both vehicles are assembled in the same assembly line at a factory in Kyushu, Japan. So, quality-wise, they are the same. I almost bought a QX4 but opted for the PF LE because I could not justify the added premium. You will always get differing opinions about which one is better, given the price/features. It is up to the individual who is buying the vehicle if the added premium of the QX4 is worth paying for. In my case, it was not. To all the other QX4 owners, it was. Either way, both are excellent vehicles and should serve their purpose well.
BTW, the QX4 has a softer-tuned suspension to achieve the luxury ride.
Seems to me that for about $4500 more you get:
60 versus 36k warranty
48 months as 36
side air bags
17 inch tires if you choose the premium package
Rust 84 as 60 months
Passenger power seat
Loner cars
Different cadging
I see nothing about better insulation but the comment about the added weight may make this so.
Am I missing anything that anyone knows about?
Thanks
Michael
Sorry
Cliff
1.Poor resale, by far the worst of the group
2. rear drum brakes
3. it's a pathfinder with more sound insulation and better interior materials.
4. no dead pedal
5. compared to the Lexus terrible gas mileage
6. worst sound system
7. truck like ride
The german cars were too pricey and I think the Accura deserves consideration, but I can't understand wwhy anyone would wait 3 mos or more for a car and pay MSRP+. I got a 5k discount off msrp from lexus.
I don't want to denigrate the qx I just want to give fair and accurate info to friends who are in the market now that Infiniti is substantially discounting this vehicle.
Can some of you QX enthusiasts explain your attraction to the car in todays market?
Would that be the same worst stereo system as in the PF that most auto magazines (including Edmund's review) are raving about?
Would that be the same truck-like ride that allows this vehicle to confidently go offroad (no, don't try and take your minivan...er...car offroad, plain bad idea).
As for resale value, let's see what the new engine does for that (oh right, this truck out-accelerates your car also).
As for 3, 4 and 5....so??
I noticed you conveniently forgot to mention that your car has been universally condemned for its ugly exterior, cheap looking wood trim (looks more fake than the QX4's plastic wood trim) and miserable display screen. Troll elsewhere.
Happy New Year,
Jimmy

And before you think I'm a QX4 basher, I lease a '97 Pathfinder, so these results affect me too.
The results are pitiful and I was shocked. What's even worse, look at the bumper damage $$$ results. Ouch.
http://www.highwaysafety.org/vehicle_ratings/low_speed_midsuv.htm
We were all ready to buy a '01 PF LE. Not any more. A QX4 is just a more expensive PF.
Don't get me wrong, the reliabilty of the PFs/QX4s is without question. I've never had a single problem. And you can search the governments site, no technical service bulletins or recalls whatsoever.
But the Lexus RX300 is designed for saftey. From the VSC (vehicle skid control), TRACS (traction control), to mechcanical features (engine is designed to drop down in case of high impact collision, rather than push into passenger compartment), the Lexus simply blows away the QX4.
THis is an objective presentation of the facts, rather than the rationalization "I bought the vehicle, so it must be good."
If you need some off-road capabilty or better towing, then yes, definitley get the QX4 over the RX300.
The VSC and TRACS on the Lexus are excellent features, I wish more vehicles had them. I also know the QX4/PF has a modified anti-lock braking system designed to stop better on loose surfaces (where this truck is supposed to spend part of its life).
As for the $$ involved for 5 mph bumper test, they are very high, but that's why I have insurance. Whether it's $500 or $5000, I'm still going to have to pay my full deductible. I also note they only refer to a 1997 PF/QX4. Extrapolating to a 2001 model would not be objective (at least the IIHS felt they shouldn't).
the price difference is $4500.
the difference between the Pathy LE and QX4 here in canada, looking at the listed prices on the nissan and infini websites of canada is much less.
the difference between the two models in canada is $3700, and thats canadian dollars.
dealers have more room to negotiate on the QX4 on we got a QX4'01 in november for about $1000 more than the Pathy LE. not taking into account that the pathy price could have been negotiated as well. but even if the difference was 3000 canadaian dollars. it is well worth the diffence for the following reasons:
- main warranty is 4years/100,000km along with
the road side assistance (never used it).
- feels expensive (had a pathy LE for 3 years).
- amazing looking Xenon lights ($800 option on other cars)
- Looks much nicer....opinions vary offcourse.
- few more gadgets.....
the difference seems worth it here in canada...i do realize that the price difference b/w canada and the states is not the same using exchange rates.
If you don't care about the longer warranty and looks......then buy the pathfinder......after all
the QX4 is a pathfinder mechanically
NOTE: THE LE PATHY IN CANADA ALREADY HAS THE AUTO-MODE 4WD THAT THE QX4 COMES WITH. I DON'T KNOW..MAY BE THAT JUSTIFIES THE PRICE DIFFERENCE...
thanks
Currently QX4'01
prev. Pathfinder LE '98
Just wondering, are there any QX4 owners that use 87 octane?
as for any specific vehicle, it is best to check with the owner's manual. most vehicles require only 87. many newer high-tech engine require higher octane, as well as older engines in need of an overhaul.

Since we've been talking prices and Canadian models I suppose it's time for me to recap from the previous forum for new readers about buying your QX4 in Canada and bringing it home to the US.
So why to do this? To save money. The exchange rate has been great for the US recently. Last time I checked, a loaded QX4 AWD (includes what we call Sport pkg, Sunroof, and Premium pkg) would go for under $32,000 (including duty at the border). US dealer invoice for the same vehicle is $34,899 and list is $38,525.
If on the other hand you prefer the Pathfinder LE, with leather it goes for just over $28,000.
Here's the answers to the most asked questions:
- Yes, it's perfectly legal as a US resident to buy a new car in Canada.
- QX4 and Pathfinder meet all US safety and emissions requirements (California too).
- You will have to pay some Canadian sales taxes, but they send you a refund after you take the vehicle out of the country.
- The warranty is honored in the US.
- It's identical to the US QX4, but in Canada they come better equipped with options.
- No two-wheel drive available in Canada.
- Speedo is in km and miles; odo is in km, but can be changed if you prefer.
- I have found some dealers willing to sell over the phone at close to invoice, far below list price.
- Get your financing at home first.
Quick summary of the process:
1. Call dealer and make a deal. Get VIN number.
2. Call Nissan and get US emissions and safety compliance letter (will fax if in a hurry).
3. Go to Canada, pay, drive away.
4. Stop at Canadian customs. Get form stamped.
5. Stop at US Customs. Show compliance letter. Pay 2.5% duty.
6. Register vehicle and pay your state's sales tax when home just like normal.
7. Get Canadian sales tax refund check in the mail.
I bought my Pathfinder in Canada in September and I know of about twenty more since then who have done it or are in the process. It's not difficult at all. Sure, there's a little paperwork to do. And many people are surprised how close to Canada they really are. Anyone from Chicago to D.C. is easily within a one days drive of Toronto. And much of the west coast is close to Vancouver.
There is a lot more in the way of personal notes and savings in the Pathfinder forums. I'm glad to help anyone out with questions or good contacts. I have lots more information available. Just email me.

It's been a while since I've posted about my problems, but it's also been some time since anything new has happened with my case. In mid-December, I was assured by the Consumer Affairs rep that Infiniti's arbitration rep was looking at my case to try and come to a possible deal for me, and it wouldn't be too long before I heard what their "position" was. That was a month ago.
Exasperated, I had no choice but to start filing lemon papers. Sent them a final repair notice re: the whining roof rack and a clanking noise associated with the transmission. They quickly sent me back a letter stating they would not do anything about the roof rack because they don't know how to fix it yet. They then said that since a technician didn't hear a noise while driving my vehicle on a day that I was in possession of my QX4- they didn't have it that day- that I have no noise and therefore there is no repair necessary. Ridiculous.
Ever since the last repair, my dash has been making noises because it wasn't put back in correctly. Sounds like rice crispies on a bumpy road. Now noises have once again begun to eminate from the welded area, so I sent them a final repair attempt letter on that, along with a repurchase request since they waived final attempt on the others.
I have not heard back from Consumer Affairs as was promised. Looks like I will be heading into arbitration with a documented admission that they can't/won't fix my problems.
I was advised to send a letter to the dealership re: damages due to faulty repair, etc., because they didn't install the dash back right and put scratches/gouges on the inside and out. They recieved this letter near the first of the year, and only today did I receive a message from the service manager at the dealership. I
addressed my letter to the general manager....
Don't know how things will work out, but I am very unhappy. Infiniti hasn't treated me with any respect, and hasn't lived up to any of their pledges to me. Their follow-through is abyssmal. I can't believe I am going through this with a so-called luxury auto. You'd think they'd do the right thing, but I think they are only committed to doing what they have to do. I haven't seen the great customer service that they advertise. What good is a free carwash when you have a defective car???

Love my QX4,
JImmy
Well, got no response from Infiniti on my second final repair notice (which means they don't want to try to fix it) or the repurchase request, so I called them up and asked them what their reply was. The rep I spoke to quickly replied that Infiniti has 30 days to respond. I told her that I didn't want to wait that long before initiating arbitration and she told me she'd "check into it" and get back to me.
Based on how they've treated me so far, all I can say is "yeah, right."
Since Infiniti doesn't seem to want to take care of my problems, I have decided to initiate an "informational" campaign to help speed things up a little. This will include a website covering my saga, and perhaps some picketing in front of the local dealerships. In this season of slumping car sales, I figure I can give prospective buyers another reason to think before buying from Infiniti.
Would you buy a vehicle if you knew someone who owned one that:
• spent 39 days in for warranty repair in the first 6 months, before the first oil change
• had problems that the manufacturer refuses to try to repair
• was damaged while under manufacturer-ordered repairs
• has numerous fit/finish and mechanical defects
• the service manager commented "I shouldn't tell you this, but I'm hearing all kinds of other noise"
• the service manager expressed that in the future he would conceal the repair for a major defect
I am really saddened to see that Infiniti doesn't seem to care that I ended up with their dud. You would think that they could live up to their much-vaunted claims of great customer service. They have not.
Once I post the website I will put the url in this board, and encourage everyone here to pass it on.
You may like your infiniti, but what would happen if you had my problems? Wouldn't you want to see a company take repsonsibility for a defective product?
that's it for now....
Thanks
Gene
my experience was a really good one, and contributed to my decision to get the qx4.

could not have been any happier with my choice.
VERY reliable.
i leased a pathfinder for 3 years (98 model) which basically is the same as the infiniti interms of structure and mechanics.
i NEVER had a problem with my pathfinder. i don't even recall using the warranty.
i also have a 1995 maxima GXE.....i got it brand new and now with 110Kmiles......i have been extremely pleased with the car.
my next car will most likely be a Nissan/Infiniti
i personally hate my dealership service....but to solve the problem i can just go to a different dealer. problem solved.
We also have a '96 accord in the house. Very reliable. A higher resale....otherwise all the cars have been RELIABLE and live up to their reputation of QUALITY.
Jimmy
power and torque of that engine.....the new 01'+ QX4/Pathfinders have a different engine type with significantly more output.....
i believe the 97 had 168HP and the new one has 240HP. test drive the 97.
with it. However, I would like to find out the
fluid capacities for the automatic transmission,
the limited slip differential, the all wheel
drive (AWD) transfer case, and the brakes.
But my owners manual does not have the
information (it only tells you the fluid capacity
for the engine oil), and noone at my dealership
seems to know the answers. Can anyone assist?
Thanks!!
Just my opinion.
