I just experienced the instrument cluster problem ( speedometer) and took my 05 burb to the local Chevrolet dealership. Not only were they not up to date on the current policy from Chevrolet but almost defiant in fixing the problem.
The (service) lol manager said the warranty only covered to 70000 miles or 5 years. Didn't want to hear my story or investigate the warranty so I called another dealership and the part time service person knew more than the bozos at this dealership. I had to call the GM customer service # and explain that the dealership said I wasn't covered and that I was getting 2 stories from 2 different places.
The current policy covers also from 70001 to 79999 miles and you have to pay labor. I called two dealerships and the labor charge was $100 at 1 dealer and $150 at the other.
Obviously the 2nd dealer is trying to make up for not getting a markup on the part with higher labor charges which I will also call GM customer service about.
The service manager put me on hold and asked their (Warranty Specialist, lol again) about the coverage and, SURPRISE, the specialist had no clue either.
If you live in the OBX area of NC think twice about using Victory Chevrolet for a purchase or service work. ARROGANT, DEFIANT and just a plain terrible dealership.
On the other hand, Elliot Chevrolet in Staunton, VA will provide the CORRECT info for you.
That's bull. No way you should have to pay for labor. Especially $100. If they go that way with me I'll tell them to order the part and I'll fit it myself. It's not that difficult. 10 minute job max.
If anyone is curious, I purchased 05 Silverado new. Speedo went out with 130,000 miles. I knew it wouldn't get covered under warranty so I had it fixed through online company. I removed it myself, mailed it to company and they replaced all guages with non-defective parts. the same day they received it for $129.00 I paid $24.00 shipping and got it back in 4 days. I would not get new one from dealership for two reasons, 1. The price was $480.00 and 2. the one they sell you has same defective parts, so it too will go out. If anyone is interested who rebuilt mine just let me know.
Sorry, but it seems no dealership will fix problem . You have to have the right vin # to qualify. Elliot is no more informed than the rest of the gm dealers.
Frank at customer service at GM is a big A--hole so if you talk to him just be ready for the run around.
One thing for sure, I will never buy a GM product again and if you do---GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I am interested in where you got the speedometer fixed. ICan you post a link? 'm having the same problem as everyone else with my 2003 Trailblazer, and I want to just fix it myself.
Folks, I feel your pain! I have an 04 Envoy that the speedometer started acting up on at around 70K. Some times it gets stuck at a "pegged" speed or something in between. I noticed that when you start the vehicle, all the gauges pulse toward the "zero" position, so i thought "what if I could turn the key on in succession - would it reset the speedometer?" Well, you can't do it with the vehicle in PARK , because it starts the vehicle, BUT, you can reset the speedometer in this way: 1) While in PARK, turn the key toward the "START" position, but stop short of starting the vehicle 2) With the key in this position, put the shift lever into "R" or REVERSE 3) Now RAPIDLY turn the key toward the START position and momentarily, hold it there and you'll see the speedometer will pulse about 5-10 MPH toward the "zero" speed position. Before the needle pulses back in a positive direction, repeat the key turning sequence in rapid succession and you can slowly reset the speedometer back to zero. It takes a little practice, but eventually, you can reset it in about a minute. I now have 148K on my Envoy and it's worked so far...
My 2003 Z71 is crap. The oil pressure and fuel quantity indicator went around 55k, Dealer would not cover it and I was able to work around the issue. I change the oil every 3500miles and I had digital miles to use for the fuel issue. Now my wife is leaving for Chicago and the speedo is parked at 120+. My heated seats just quit! the sticker on the car is $48,657.00. This stuff just quits working. I do have 125k on the vehicle (soccer/baseball mom)but this is BS. I spoke with GM service and they tell me they are NOT aware of these issues! You got to be KIDDING! They I come across this forum, unbelievable the people having the same problems. Everyone should call and light up GM Costumer Service. I am calling my attorney general's office in NJ. I WILL never but a GM vehicle again!!!!! And think the taxpayers bailed out this unaccountable company. ITS ARROGANCE!
I have a question about my 2008 Suburban. Bought it used with 32000 miles on it. Anytime I gently presss the brake pedal I get a squeking noise, but as I press the pedal harder to actually stop the truck the squeak goes away. Called dealeship and they said it was just brake just and to go wash the discs off at a carwash. Didn't quite solve the problem. Thoughts. Anyone had this issue. Brakes work fine in terms fo slowing down truck and no wobbling in the steering wheel when brakes are applied.
Hello ,could you please give me some info on where you sent your cluster too ? I have had this problem with my 03 since Jan 09. All in one day my oil pressure gauge , then the charging system then the speedo. It was really cold that day around 0 or minus. The weird thing is once in awhile the speedo works. Thank You :shades:
I would like to thank everyone for posting either similar or exactly the same problem i'm having. Around 85K, my fuel gauge stopped showing full. The fuel pump went around 80K, so the dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty fuel sensor causing the gauge to not function. which comes attached to the Fuel pump. Just over 12k and less then one year, the problem started again. From the dealer prospective, there work is only guaranteed for a year/12k miles. I complained, there's no way ...now that the truck is out of warranty, I'm going to start paying every year to have the Fuel pumped replaced. That's a major job and very expensive. From the post on this site, the problem appears to be within the Instrument Panel and the dealer should have replaced the panel. Again, the dealer or should I say, the "Parts Swappers", have failed to fix another problem.
Hello to All.. Check Ebay.. There Are A few People That Actually repair The Cluster. Price Ranges From $30 To $140 Or Higher.. You Would Have To Remove The Cluster Yourself And Mail It To The Person. Beware Of And Read Very Carefully The Fine Print Of The Service Being Rendered.. Some Of The Auctions Are Only For The Repair Of One Gauge and Others For The Entire Cluster.
The Issue Is Caused By Burnt out "Bumper" motors.. The Needles On The Gauges Actually Plug Into These Motors And Cause Them To move. I Was Able To Dig In and Get As Far As The Motors On My Cluster (Which I Replaced In New Mexico With A Used One Just So I Could Get Home With A Speedometer) I Was Going To Switch The Motors Myself But They Are On a Circuit Board That I Just Didn't Have The Guts To Tamper With. With "GOVERNMENT MOTORS" Disregarding Their "Loyals" It Would Be Wise To Take Advantage Of The People On Ebay That Offer The Repair Service Which Includes Replacing The Old Motors With The Next Generation Motors That GM Started Using after The Crap They Sold Us Gave Out..
These Guys Also Calibrate The Cluster Before Sending It Back.. Again, The Pricing Is The Key.. Read The Whole "Buy It Now" Auction Details Before Making The Purchase. One Of The Guys In In Minnesota Another In Oklahoma.. The Other i Do Not Remember.
They Should Come Up. Turn around Time According To The Auctions Is One Working Day After The Cluster Is Received By the Repairman. Also You Will Have To Pay The Shipping..
I just took it to my local Chevy service dept and they checked to see if the VIN was covered by the warranty. It was. So they didn't charge me anything.
I am sorry but I just want to make sure I am understanding. Was that under your regular warranty or the cluster panel warranty? I just ask because I don't have a warranty on my 2004 Trailblazer anymore but if it is a different type then I can check that. Also did you mention it to your dealership about the warranty or did they already know information from what GM has put out about the cluster panels?
Thank you so much for your feedback. I am just trying to get mine fixed free of charge. ;-)
I would like to join the class action suit...GM definitely knows they had a problem with the bump motors that drive the guages for years...02-03-04-05-06 and no telling how much farther...instead of just replacimng the motors for a nominal charge (sublet it out) they just told us owners to take a hike. 02-04 were known to be bad and GM was doing a warranty and replacing the entire cluster...i bought the 05 unaware a problem existed and they used the sam,r part that was bad in all other years and makes...but knowing this, they still refused to replace under warranty...Why do they wonder why the public has such a negative responce tlo them when they treat their loyal customers in such a manner...i will never buy another GM product again!!!!!!
They are covering certain year models under certain mileage for this problem. Someone posted the actual letter that went out that lists what year models and mileage you have to meet to get the warranty coverage. I think it's within the first 7 years and under 70K miles. I knew that our truck fell within the parameters listed and I mentioned it to the dealer and he had to go and check the VIN number and I was given the OK for warranty. Took about 5 working days to get the part.
I have a 03 Duramax and the clusters went out at about 110 k the dealer told me it was past the mileage so chevy would not do ANYTHING about it.they wanted just under $500 to fix it I told them to kiss my #@#@ well never mind.Someone needs to make them fix there mistake
Wow. Thanks for the help. My 2004 Tahoe's speedometer started to malfunction about a week ago on a long road trip. I'm just over the 70,000 miles. (perfect timing) I will call that CS number and see how that goes. I never got a letter from GM about the problem, but now I have some ammo to take to the dealership. How deep is that lawsuit right now?
I am in Indiana and I have been having the same problem with my '04 Suburban that many have posted similar comment on. I see words that there may be a class action lawsuit, in Indiana, to get GM to pay for a replacement speedometer or cluster panel. Can anyone please provide direction or comments on this to help the rest of us remedy this problem.
I was coming home from Christmas with my family and my speedometer was acting up. It concerned me at first because I was traveling on snow covered roads and thought my tires were spinning but my tach was not indicating it. The more I slowed down whether from braking or momentum, the speedometer kept going up. I have an 03 Silverado 1500 with 140,000 miles on it. I have not received a speedometer letter either. I would like to be added to any lawsuit to get this fixed. Obviously this is an issue that GM needs to make good on, the sooner the better. Any assistance someone can give me would be appreciated. If there is a law suit in Indiana, I would like to be added to it. Please feel free to contact me at marcbuc@gmail.com.
How is this any different, than a headlight burning out, a windshield wiper motor burning out, and alternator diode failing, etc?
You have a vehicle that is out of the contracted warranty period by 3 times. Why is it, that you feel GM should fix this?
Now luckily I haven't had any of my gauges act up, and if I did I would feel extremely grateful if GM paid to fix them. However if they didn't, I can't see what legal premise I would have to try to get them to cover the cost. It's outside the well documented warranty period, and I didn't pay/buy an extended warranty period (even though being clearly offered it I declined it).
Mine is acting up and I only have slightly more than 16k miles on it. Speedometer indicated I was doing 90 when I was parked in a parking space. Drove it home with the needle pegged past 120 MPH. Using previous knowledge and tach reading I knew I was only doing about 60. The following day the needle indicated I was doing 70 when I started the truck in my driveway. I found the trick about trying to start the truck while in gear and the needle went back down to zero after about 8 on-off cycles. I will be calling dealer and mentioning the Bulletin 07187 to see if I am covered.
I have a 2004 Trailblazer with 76,000 and my speedometer just quit. I called the CS number and my VIN/model is not covered and they said to talk with the dealership. May see them on Saturday but I don't think the odds are too good. What did you end up doing?
How do I find this online. I have an 04 Tahoe w/100k and an 04 GM Sierra 2500 and the speedometers on both vehicles have gone out. What part do I need to look up and how hard is it to replace? Thanks, Harold :confuse:
Read back thru this Edmunds forum, as I recall it's been discussed within the last year or so.
There is a company that repairs your cluster. You take your cluster out, overnight it to them, they repair the gauges that are bad, and overnight it back to you. Very reasonably priced and they give you the instructions how to do it. I don't remember the company, but their website link has been posted in the forum.
I think I also printed it and saved a copy in one of my Suburban manuals, but I don't have access to them right now.
There are 3 popular locations to get your instrument cluster repaired, fairly economically. Here is one of them:
Speedometer Repair Center Robert Villegas www.speedometergaugerepair.com mail@speedometergaugerepair.com
The Cluster is pretty simple to remove. The sites that repair these can also help you, but here are the basic instructions:
*******Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent any accidental short circuit***** 1. Apply the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from moving. 2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, move the shift lever all the way down to last gear (this will allow you room to remove the bezel). 3. Tilt the steering wheel to the full down position. 4. Pull gently rearward on the corners of the bezel from the instrument panel (IP) assembly. There are no screws holding in place. 5. Remove the bezel. 6. Remove the (7mm hex head) screws that retain the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) 7. Remove the IPC from the vehicle by tilting the bottom of the cluster outward. 8. Disconnect the IPC harness from the IPC by squeezing in it's clamp tab and pulling moderately.
I've already had my panel replaced once at 65k for the speedo failing. Now at 80k the fuel gage is messing up. Showing full when it's only half full. The internal metering system is working as my fuel computer is working and showing me correct gallons used.
Any thoughts as to if the fuel gage can also go bad in the same way the speedo can.
Spedometer on my 2004 Tahoe Z71 with 85000 miles started sticking and acting eratic today. I did some searching and found a post on another site that listed a "silent recall" from Chev from back in 2007. It should be a crime that Chev was not required by law to publish this info to all owners of these vehicles back in 2007. Anyway, I have copied it below. You might use this to help working with a dealer to fix the problem. Since my Z71 has over 70K miles, it won't help me. Good Luck.
PS - The VIN Breakpoints that is mentioned would be the last 8 digits of your VIN.
Re: 2003 Tahoe speedometer problem A special policy came out for 03-04 trucks and suvs with less then 70,000 miles, and less then 7 years old. It technically isnt a recall, as only the ones that actually have the problem will be fixed. Dont worry though, if you were going to have the problem you most likely would have already. If your vehicle is involved you willbe notified, but they wont make any repairs unless yours actually has the problem. See below:
Subject: Special Coverage Adjustment - Instrument Panel Cluster Gauge Needle Function #07187 - (09/28/2007) Models: 2003-2004 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, ESCALADE EXT 2003-2004 CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE 2003-2004 GMC SIERRA, YUKON, YUKON XL --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - DUE TO PART AVAILABILITY, THIS SPECIAL COVERAGE IS BEING ADMINISTERED IN PHASES. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED AS EACH ADDITIONAL PHASE IS RELEASED. CUSTOMERS ARE BEING INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP TO ARRANGE AN APPOINTMENT IF THEY BELIEVE THEIR VEHICLE HAS THIS CONDITION. THE CUSTOMER IS BEING ASKED TO PROVIDE THE VIN SO THE IPC CAN BE ORDERED IN ADVANCE OF THE SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT. THIS WILL ELIMINATE THE NEED TO KEEP THE VEHICLE OVERNIGHT. DEALERS ARE TO OBTAIN THE VEHICLE MILEAGE WHEN SCHEDULING A SERVICE APPOINTMENT. THE VEHICLE MILEAGE WILL BE REQUIRED WHEN PLACING AN ORDER FOR THE IPC.
Condition Some customers of 2003-2004 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles have reported that one or more of the instrument panel (IP) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and fuel gauge. Special Coverage Adjustment This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership. Dealers are to replace the instrument panel cluster after the condition has been verified. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer. Returned IP clusters will be inspected upon return and replacement of IP clusters that do not exhibit the condition will not be covered. For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after September 28, 2007 are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to September 28, 2007, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.
Vehicles Involved are all 2003-2004 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints:
We would like to be added also to any class action suit. Today our speedometer just went crazy. It showed us going 45 mph when we were stopped. I filed for a free evaluation with a lemom law lawyer. Dealer estimate was $375.00 and he claimed there was not a recall or law suit.
I JUST had the problem occur to me 2 weeks ago, and I am unfortunately over the 7yr/70 k miles, just got off the phone with a service advisor and the cost is around 550.00 here.
Does anyone know what the exact problem is? I have heard speedo cable, instrument custer..
Same problem, Dec. 29, 2009. GMC VIN is within the list. But I am 5 3/4 out with 92,000. Cost me $529.85. Mine all of a sudden read 40 miles too low. We were entering the freeway at what we thought was 60. In fact, we were going 20. GMC denied me helping with 1/2 the part.
The problem is with the step motors that drive the guages behind the display cluster. The step motor receives an electrical signal from the different vehicle systems (speed, rpm, gas gauge, etc) and the step motor moves the needle in proportion. The step motor design was apparently faulty in these later model vehicles and randomly fail. GM had a silent recall in 2007 for vehicle less than 7yr/70K miles for specific production VIN's. Now only option is to pay high priced dealer($300-$600), find a local shop ($$??) or go to the online repair web site and send your instrument cluster to them for repair (~$100-$250). I will probably try http://www.instrumentclusters.com. Quote I got for my 2004 Z71 was $235 if I removed it and sent it to them. They have a guarentee with their work.
Thanks for the heads up on Auto & Truck Electronics Rogersville, TN. I did some checking and they sound like they have a pretty good deal. I also found them on EBAY offering the service at even better price but you have to pay shipping one way. They ship back free via UPS ground. I guess you would have to pay for faster shipping. http://stores.ebay.com/ABS-ECU-ECM-EBCM-COMPUTER-REBUILD. Was your $149 quote including shipping BOTH ways and was it 1 or 2 day shipping?
Once I take my cluster out, my tahoe is dead until I get the cluster back.
Beware sending your unit to Auto & Truck Electronics in Rogersville, TN. I sent them my unit and they damaged the information center under the speedometer. I sent the unit back and they could not fix it and refused a refund. Basically I got screwed out of $100 and 4 weeks of use of my vehicle and had to buy a new cluster in the end anyway.
I took my SSR to Lauderdale Speedometer in Ft. Lauderdale on Monday and they replaced all the stepper motors. Saved me $600 over the dealer price. So far everything works great. All they do is work with gauges. I found them in a post on the SSR Fanantic site.
I am currently trying to get my 2004 Chevy Suburban fixed. The speedometer sporadically acted up for about a year...worse in the winter and on long trips...But now is all over the place, but never where it belongs. Sometimes the speedometer says I am going 120+mph, sometimes under 10mph. It is fairly unnerving, not knowing your speed!! So.... Now my gas gauge is apparently acting up, too. I ran out of gas last week, and the gauge was not even in the red area near empty!! (my low fuel light has never worked) When I filled the tank, the needle went way beyond full, to the far bottom of the gauge. The local Chevy dealer quoted us $658 for the repair. I remember receiving a recall notice regarding the dash gauges about 3 years ago, soon after we bought the car, but of course there were no problems with the gauges at the time. Now that I have the problem, the recall is apparently no longer effective. Any suggestions for a mom from Indiana?????
The GM recall is good for up to 7yr or 80,000 miles. So if you are less than these trigger points the dealer should fix your 2004. Mine was at 83000 and they would not fix it. I still have not fixed it and using my GPS for speed indicator.
If not under recall, some local repair shops can fix them. Just call around to some reputable shops. They typically will take the instrument panel cluster out and send it out for repair. Cost is typically about 60% of the dealer. Or you can take the cluster out yourself and send it to one of the shops that have ads on the internet and mentioned in several of the previous posts. Cost is about 40-50% of the dealer by the time you pay shipping back and forth. Do some research on the business first and only choose a site with a good BBB reputation. Always call them before you do business with them and look them up on Google Map Street view to get an idea of the type of operation they run.
No matter what process you take, have the repair center replace all of the cluster step motors on the cluster panel (speed, tachometer, gas, temperature, etc). Apparently this chronic GM Problem is on all of the indicator gauges on these cluster panels.
Now that Government Motors Corp belongs to all of us tax payers, aren't you proud? :lemon:
My '03 Avalanche has just started acting up. First the dials stuck at zero about a week ago. Eventually they started working again, but now when I drive, my truck will shut off right in the middle of the road. Since I then don't have any brakes or steering, I have to drift to the side of the road. Once I turn the ignition off, it will start right back up again. Has anyone experienced this?

DUE TO PART AVAILABILITY, THIS SPECIAL COVERAGE IS BEING ADMINISTERED IN PHASES. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED AS EACH ADDITIONAL PHASE IS RELEASED. CUSTOMERS ARE BEING INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP TO ARRANGE AN APPOINTMENT IF THEY BELIEVE THEIR VEHICLE HAS THIS CONDITION. THE CUSTOMER IS BEING ASKED TO PROVIDE THE VIN SO THE IPC CAN BE ORDERED IN ADVANCE OF THE
SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT.
Condition
Some customers of 2003-2004 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles have reported that one or more of the instrument panel (IP) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative.

Does anyone know what the exact problem is? I have heard speedo cable, instrument custer..
Good Luck
Once I take my cluster out, my tahoe is dead until I get the cluster back.
I call GM customer Service and was told that yes there are other recalls but the SSR is not included and I will have to pay $1028 to have it repaired.
Is is possible for SSR to be included in the law suit? If so how can this be done.
Thanks.
:lemon:
