I've been getting 26mpg on average with my '99 auto. Must be how I drive it.
• varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
Good point. How you drive it is a big factor, but most of the posts I've seen reporting mpg show that the average for the automatic is pretty much the same as the EPA estimates. However, those of us with 5 speeds consistently post EPA numbers or better. I have yet to read about anyone driving a stick and getting lower than the EPA numbers.

This is, of course, based on my observations and nothing scientific. But I've been around long enough to read plenty of data. =)

I've seen a few people post that they are seeing 02 CR-V prices for $X amount over invoice...so, what is the invoice pricing? I haven't heard that anyone here knows the invoice pricing yet. I would love to know if anyone has it...
• thelthel Member Posts: 767
I've got a good salesman and we show mutual respect. When I bought my 2002 Accord EX in August they had been out for about 3 days. I just asked him what the invoice price was (I only had 2001 numbers), and paid $1000 over (a fair amount considering the trade-in). When Edmund's finally published the invoice price, it was the same figure my salesman quoted.

If you have a dealer you trust, just ask them what the invoice price is. Right now the invoice price is pretty irrelevent though seeing as how demand is quite high for the CRV and most dealers can command MSRP for a while anyway.
• scnamescname Member Posts: 296
Invoice price is $21039.52 or $21040 including $440 shipping, for an EX auto depending which dealer you go to.

I still havn't got my car, salesman called, I can wait another 5 to 10 days for new shipment or I can take the demo with 64 miles today. I choose to wait. My price is $500 over invoice.

Demand for the new V is lukewarm at this point while Honda has 11000 new Vs heading this way every month. I think smart shoppers can tell the saleman to call when he has the car at $200 over invoice. I think he will call in a week.

Has anyone seen most of the colors of the new
CR-V. Which ones look best?
• scnamescname Member Posts: 296
I've seeing them all, the blue, green and red are all too dark to my liking. White is OK but plain. The mohavi is pretty but I have a thing for silver. Its all personal.

Saw a new V with grill trim today. Ugliest thing I ever saw on a Honda. the new V already has a pointed facia. the grill trim makes it really really long.

We have sold evcery one of our CR-V's at MSRP. We also have 50% of our next load that is pre-sold at MSRP.

The people that buy them are certainly not buying them because of the 'buzz' they are buying them because they like Honda and the CR-V.

I've stayed quiet for a while now reading all of the people that cant wait to say how bad Honda is doing...by the way, Honda sold 12,000 MORE cars in October 01 than they did in Oct00...hmmmmm...so Honda is hurting? If that is so, WHY do we sell cars? and at a profit?

• scnamescname Member Posts: 296
When do you expect your next load ?

Do your dealership receive the CRVs a few per week or in one lump sum per month when the ship comes in ? I've seeing the CRV count at dealer I go to grow by 25 cars in one week.

I'm waiting for my car, the salesman promised early this week, now he says 5 to 10 more days. I have no idea when he will deliver.

"This griping about how outrageous it is for dealers to demand full MSRP made me grin."

Until you can point out who was doing the griping, I think you owe us all an apology.

Anyone owns one of those remote control wiring kit for auxilary lights ?

That should make installation easy, compared to Honda fog lamp kit.

I have seen the colors. I think they all are nice. None are obnoxious. HOWEVER..the tan interior ....the hue of it just makes the entire interior look cheap. I wanted the chianti..a nice color between red and burgandy...but the only option is the tan interior. I just won't do it. So I am limited to black, blue or silver exteriors. All other colors have the new tan interior. The charcoal grey, although dark, looks much better.

I know I am not in the minority on this interior color. It's mentioned repeatedly in this board as well as others. Its hard to believe this made it through production with out them realising its a bad color.

Gee, diploid. You're gettin' a little testy on us.
The posts that I was referring to are 3824 and 3826 from yesterday afternoon.
• diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
Post 3824 was griping, but 3826, IMHO, is just crunching out numbers.

And sorry if I sound testy, but you made it seem as if the dealers are angels while we the customers are trying to rob them.

I have been thinking about buying a CRV for almost 2 years...I kept talking about it and then my parents went out and bought one this week! They picked it up today...paid about $400 under MSRP. I've talked to a few dealers in the Sacramento area who seem to be firm on MSRP but there are probably 7 honda dealers in a 50 mile radius of here so maybe the competition will drop prices soon. Has anyone else here bought in the greater Sacramento area?

I went to a dealer last night who said they still hadn't gotten an OK from Honda to start selling the new CRVs even though they already fixed the seatbelt problem and had 3 in stock. They had no idea when they would start selling them. Another dealer around here said they are selling them fast. Kind of bizarre.

I really liked what I saw -- the same things I liked about the 1st generation but with better safety features and more interior room. The one thing that really disappointed me was the small amount of adjustment in the front seats...my fiancee is 6'4" and he had enough headroom and room under the steering wheel but had to keep his knees bent because the seat barely goes back at all. I don't understand why they couldn't have put in a longer track. My Saturn has less headroom and steering wheel room but a ton more seat track!!

hey rebecca,
which dealer did you go to? here in the south end of town, only elk grove honda had any of the '02's. mel rapton only had 2 as well. i'm thinking of heading to davis or vacaville, but was wondering if you knew where i may have some better luck. i'm thinking roseville and folsom will be pricey.

thanks, jeff

I, too purchased a 2002 CR-V EX. We bought it on the 12th of November. We took it in on the 14th (with only 85 miles) to get front mud flaps installed and a slight rattle in headliner fixed. They provided my wife with a loaner and said the car had been recalled and it might not be fixed for 1-2 weeks as they did not have the seatbelt part. We have bought two hondas from this dealership in the past and have found them fair and honest.

They were uncomfortable and obviously did not know what to do or say.

It is now the 20th and we have heard nothing from the dealer or Honda. I registered on the ownerlink and it says that there are no safety recalls on the 2002 CR-V (?). I checked with other dealers and they, also cannot deliver them nor test drive them.

Are they delivering them in some areas? We expected honda or the dealership to contact us.
I feel Honda should contact the few owners who actually drove one home before the recall with some explanation (and an offer of something). I paid cash for a car that I now do not have (after two days) and am paying insurance on. As well, it is not good adverstisement when my friends ask me about our new honda and we say--they took it back?

The Honda owners link on the honda site says "There are no safety recalls on 2002 CR-V's".

We liked it for the 85 miles we had it!

I just had a wonderful experience purchasing my 2002 CR-V EX for $440 under sticker, a total after the $440 destination and handling of $22,300. After visiting three or four dealers in the Los Angeles area and being told that this car will be sold at OVER MSRP, I finally found an internet manager who was willing to go under. The buying experience was quick, fun, and they even got me financing substantially below the pre-approved loan I came in with!

I fully agree with many of the contributors to this forum who feel it is outrageous that dealers are artificially and prematurely inflating a vehicle's price BEFORE the marketplace has had a chance to determine supply and demand. May those dealers see many lost sales to dealerships who understand that customer satisfaction is still the key to good business.

And by the way...my wife and I think our new CR-V is an amazing vehicle--roomy interior, fast and responsive on the road, powerful on hills, tight handling, great visibility. I believe this will prove to be one of Honda's benchmark vehicles. But please...we all must take a stand against greed. Don't pay more than MSRP! Do your research, shop around, and together we can keep the price where it should be.

Dealers are angels? Hardly! They are businessmen in a capitalist system. If a product has high demand and limited supply, they get full price (or bump it up some if they want to risk the bad PR).

I have major problems with dealers who clumsily disguise their bump-up in the form of grossly overpriced and unwanted "options", such as rustproofing or paint protection. If they just say "$x dealer add-on", take it or leave it, at least they're being straightforward capitalists. I don't have to like it (hey; I'm probably going to buy a CR-V too!), but at least I can understand it. Would I ever pay more than MSRP? Probably not, but some people obviously want the vehicle enough to pay it... otherwise the dealers wouldn't charge it.

Like I said, if the model doesn't sell, they take a price hit. That's just the way these things go.

I can sum up the colors on the new CRV in one word: Boring. Honda should at least offer something fun like a yellow or a nice blue color like the one on the Acura RSX. I have a black 2001 CRV and a gold 2002 Accord but I wish Honda would offer a better color selection.
• jmurman42jmurman42 Member Posts: 675
Your Honda dealer now has the parts to complete the repairs on your CR-V. So, you should have yours very soon. We completed ours yesterday, but the cars that are in port or in transit will take a bit longer due to the retro fit.

Otago - Technically that may be true. Only the NHTSA can issue a recall. What is happening to the '02 CR-V is a "stop sale". This is initiated by the manufacturer before the NHTSA needs to get involved. The difference is purely technical as far as a customer's perspective, but that may exaplain why there are no "recalls".

This is truly a superb vehicle. I'm quite impressed by it...smooth silky feeling...nice pick-up, whisper-quiet...I'm so happy I decided to trade the '98 V in, although I felt kinda sad when I left her alone at the dealer's parking lot and waved good bye.

The '02 is better in every aspect...the only thing that would take a little time to get used to is the radio controls...they feel kind of far from reach (I'm 5 8"), but I guess I'm still used to my old car.

Hope you too start enjoying this outstanding vehicle.

Anyone put bigger wheels on their CRV? I wish Honda would offer at least a 16" option. The main thing I don't like about the look of the car are those puny wheels! If anyone has done this or even has pictures I'd love to see them. Thanks

Well, after waiting for what seemed like forever, I got my new 2002 CRV back last night. The seatbelt fix took longer than they expected as it was more than just a simple 'replacement'. The service manager showed me the diagram that came with the replacement parts - yikes, it looked like greek to me. The extra delay in my case was: the engineers wanted to do a 'walk thru' of the repairs and testing with the service manager and technicians to make sure it was done properly and functions as it was supposed to in the first place.

I'm still sending my letter to Honda - they owe us something (those of us who bought cars and had them taken away), an explanation and apology at the very least. But the car is soooo cool - I am happy to be driving it again. My roof rack is on, my lo-jack is installed, my mud flaps are on...I;m ready to go!

By the way - I picked the green color - definitely a good fit for me. Kind of darker than I thought I would get (my last 2 cars were Saturns and both were champagne color, GREAT color for hiding dirt and dust) - but I am very happy with it.

Happy CRVing, everyone! I'm going to visit this site frequently to keep up to date on the latest. Thanks to everyone who responded to me.

Is this a dealer addon/scam or a worthwhile expenditure of $500. Let me know. thanks
• varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
Personally, I don't mind the beige interior. I like the EX seats. The darker color used for the top of the dash and the steering wheel isn't anything special, but it didn't offend me. I haven't seen the grey interior up close.

I suspect that Honda isn't selling any bright "youthful" colors because they don't sell well enough. The Electron Blue color offered in 2000 didn't last long. Up here in NE I hardly ever see one.

Honda knows that they are going to sell every one of these for the first year without offering anything other than the basics. Later in the design's life, they will probably bring back an SE model and possibly more exciting colors.

For what it's worth, I just bought a new red LX last night. When they first came out, I went to all the area dealer and they all said they would only sell at MSRP. The dealer closest to me added $900 in the form of sealant, pinstrip and fabric protector. I called a dealer 70 miles away and negotiated $150 off MSRP and free keyless entry. The only bad thing was they only had the green and I wanted red, but I put down a $100 deposit anyway. Right before I was leaving to go pick it up, the dealer close to me called. I told him I decided to buy elsewhere because I was so disgusted with the $900 add on. He offered to not charge me for any of that. I said, "Thanks, but this other dealer took off $150 from MSRP and I put a $100 deposit down already." He then offered to match the price, including the deposit (price, $18,990 plus ttl). Once at the dealer it all went smootly, the finance guy was hedging on 5.9% until I said "How about this, give me 5.9% so when Honda calls me with the phone survey, I can tell them I was completely satisfied..." Last ngiht My two year old woke up at 4am, I didn't mind putting him in the CRV and driving around until he fell asleep....

This looks like a repeat of '97 with the first generation. Back then the choices were dark blue, dark red, dark green, black and silver. Virtually every color change since then was to add something brighter. The funny thing is that if you look at Edmunds' page for the '97 CR-V, they show it in a wild yellow with painted bumpers. Where are those cars?

• varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
That yellow CR-V is a custom job. Note that the roof rack is different as well. I believe that pic was first brought out when they began publishing information about what they were calling the "smartscape" paint scheme. I think that Honda does offer brighter colors in other markets, but they sell better over there.

scname - thanks for the info on the remote light switch. It looks neat but just wondering anybody has used it.
Based on the installation instruction for the factory fog light, the fuse box is somewhere behind (and a little lower) between the steering and the center control (a/c, etc)). To get to the fuse box, it looks like you still have to take everything out (center control dash, etc). Is there another fuse box that are easier to get to? Can anybody who currently has the new CR-V check on that?
• canadatwocanadatwo Member Posts: 198
Going to a 16" rim would not solve the problem of the tires looking short in the new CRV.

You would have to keep the diameter (height) of the tire about the same as they are now.

Many people confuse the wheel size being directly proportional to tire height. This is incorrect.

You can get 35" high tires that will fit on 15" rims. (of course not for the CRV). You can also get 24" high tires that will fit on a 16" rim.

Honda probably decided to go with a smaller tire to maintain efficiency and "peppyness" at the cost of a "sporty" & "tougher" appearance.

What brand/model roof rack did you put on your 02 CRV??? I want to add one to my future purchase as well. On the Honda.com site, a roof rack isn't a customization choice...

Thanks.
• scnamescname Member Posts: 296
Last time (20years ago)I installed a fog light, I tag a wire on the battary directly with a inline fuse holder for protection. Most aftermarket wiring kit should contain a fuse box, if not ,the relays works just like circuit breakers. I like keeping the add ons on a complete seperate circuit from the car's so if car breaks down, Honda cannot blame the add on.

This from the Liberty board, roll over. And here I was wondering if I should gotten a Liberty. Felt more substantial and heavy duty on my test drive.

Well, this is the situation in Canada. I went last night to a CRV unveiling event in Richmond, BC. They had three new CRV's there, an LX, EX, and EX w/ leather. In Canada, the EX doesn't have the moonroof, and you have to go to the leather upgrade to get it. Crappy...

We weren't able to test drive b/c of the "stop sell" issued by Honda. However, got a good chance to look at the vehicle. My wife thought it looked so much bigger than the old CRV and was surprised to learn the actual increases in dimension were very modest. They've really managed to fill out the space a lot better IMHO, which gives it the bigger feel/look.

The sticker prices on the vehicles were about $1000 over the MSRP prices released by Honda Canada. For example, the sticker on the floor model EX was 30,550. Canadian driver posted that Honda Canada had announced MSRP at 29,550. Looks like a bit of price gouging on the part of the dealership. Hmmmm...

We're leaning towards getting the LX, and just adding keyless entry. The brochure says that this is an option on the LX, so that pretty much confirms it's like the previous model and just requires the new remotes to be programmed for the vehicle.

Delivery doesn't take place here until Dec. 1st. Yes, Canada sucks at times ;) Apparently, all the vehicles are at the docks just collecting the cold Vancouver rain...
What about rustproofing, paint and interior protection? Is this a dealer addon/scam or a worthwhile expenditure of $500
Heh, heh... my trusted honda dealer even agreed that this was a scam. If you're worried, do what most people do: after your purchase, go buy a couple of cans of scotchguard fabric protector from the hardware store. Bring the cans home, and go crazy. Voila!!! Interior protection done the value way!
• scnamescname Member Posts: 296
Anyone got experience installing a trailer hitch on 02 or 01? Can't find instructions anywhere. Honda brochure only says it is simple to install.
• thelthel Member Posts: 767
Around my neck of the woods, there are yellow Ford Escapes all over the place (more than about any other color). Yellow Mazda Pro5's are the most sought after color. I don't see why a yellow CRV couldn't sell. Nissan makes a yellow Xterra that sells well around here as well.

The point is, I don't see yellow cars on the lots, they're sold quickly, so I only see them on the streets.

I also attended a CRV unveiling in Victoria last night. The prices that you were quoted are probably including Freight and pdi.The prices in Victoria were lx auto CAD28814 and the ex auto CAD30614 all including "frt pdi floor mats and mud flaps".

On colours, I notice that we do not get either the white or green, but instead something called zircon blue metallic which is a light/medium blue.I haven't seen one of those yet but it comes with the black interior so I may be interested.

Likes...solid feeling,ABS standard on low end model, good cargo room, exterior colours!

Dislikes...no VARIABLE intermittent windshield wipers...almost a necessity on the wet coast.cannot fold down front pass seat to accommodate very long items, beige interior, fuel economy(yes I know its almost best in class but I still feel it should be a bit better).

To Jlee7:

I went to Mel Rapton where they had 3 2002 CRVs and they said they would be selling at MSRP. I called Autowest Honda in the Roseville automall and they said they were selling fast (and online are priced like $5K over MSRP!!!?) My stepdad talked to Vacaville and they also said they wouldn't go under MSRP. I haven't checked Carmichael Honda or Auburn Honda yet (I live in Antelope so those are closer to me)

Have you talked to Elk Grove Honda yet? I don't know if the ones who claim they won't go under MSRP will change their minds when you walk out with your check :)

In the money grubbing capitalist society we all live in, you're gonna pay for the newest and latest popular model. Why shouldn't you? I have nothing against the dealers for charging and paying MSRP for a popular vehicle. Remember, everything's negotiable, even though there may be extra markup tagged on, chances are the dealer will come down.

To me, nothing's worse than feeling like you paid too much for a vehicle. I'd much rather have a salesman say "Hey, it's a popular vehicle, this is the price, no negotiating" than feeling like I got taken and paid too much.

I paid MSRP for the Odyssey in Nov. 99 when they first came out and it was a bargain compared to what they were going for a few weeks later.
• marky777marky777 Member Posts: 24
I think you may be wrong on the variable intermittent wipers. They're standard on all the US models. I'll have to verify on my Cdn brochure though when I get home.

I can't imagine any vehicle worth more than a Tercel/Civic HB not having variable...
• motormindmotormind Member Posts: 6
The "intermittent" wipers are probably like the previous generation CR-V's wipers. They operate at a speed one step slower than "slow", but that speed cannot be adjusted or varied. There have been many times I've wished for true variable intermittent wipers in my '97 V.
• robertsmxrobertsmx Member Posts: 5,525
Just overheard a news broadcast that Jeep Liberty rolled over (completely) in one of safety tests, supposedly a first ever. Not sure at this moment what the test was about.

And ofcourse, as expected, DCX spokesperson comes out in defense blaming it on aggressive driving.
• scnamescname Member Posts: 296
here's the story. You want ground clearance you get that. Should help CRV sales.

• marky777marky777 Member Posts: 24
well, sorry... i stand corrected ;)

who would think that a car that costs more than $25K cdn wouldn't have true variable intermittent wipers.

wow, any other major shortcomings??
• varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
There are a number of trailer hitch stories over at the CR-V IX.

Intermittent wipers are standard on the US models. I think what you are looking for are variable speed intermittent wipers. FWIW, the rear wiper also has an intermittent function. It swipes across several times, then settles into a pattern with a single swipe every 7-10 seconds.

If the Liberty rolled in a test, it would be the side impact test. I don't understand how DCX could blame it on aggressive driving, though. The car is stationary until the sled hits it. FWIW, the 1st gen CR-V flopped on its side during the side impact. It did not roll on its roof which is why they may be calling the Liberty's rollover a "first".

• canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
I think if you get broadsided hard enough to knock the vehicle over, a rollover may be the least of your worries!
• varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
I'd have to check, but I think the NHTSA side impact test is conducted at 18mph. Not %100 sure. Whatever it was, it was enough to launch the CR-V about 4-6 feet and make it bounce on it's passenger side wheels. When the suspension rebounded, the vehicle tipped over onto it's side. I saw a video of the test. The impact was scary, but, IMHO, the tipping on its side part was pretty benign.
• SpyponderSpyponder Member Posts: 128
According to Autoweek, the Liberty rolled (twice) during a slalom handling test, not a side-impact test.
