Did you recently rush to buy a new vehicle before tariff-related price hikes? A reporter is looking to speak with shoppers who felt pressure to act quickly due to expected cost increases; please reach out to PR@Edmunds.com for more details by 4/24.
We don't know a whole lot about the EN just yet -- not even its name ("EN" is only the internal project name; it's for this reason that I assume there isn't a thread). What we do know for sure:
+Standard 3.8-liter V6. +Standard 6-speed automatic transmission. +Larger and more upscale than Santa Fe -- straddles the line between midsize and full-size SUVs. +Comfortable seating for seven adults. +Built in Korea on a "stretched" version of the new crossover platform (which first debuts on the '07 Santa Fe). +Due in the US late 2006 -- early 2007 if there are unforeseen delays +Styling attractive; along the same lines as Santa Fe and Azera, but beefier, more aggressive.
Considering the popularity of portable music players, I hope Hyundai includes an aux input jack. RAV4 has a very nicely placed one, with an accompanying power socket for charging, hidden in the center console. Very important feature for many people.
The Honda C-RV and the Suzuki Grand Vitara and XL-7 all have right-hinged doors. Never could understand the reasoning behind that -- I can't believe that it's a simple cost-saving move. They know what side of the vehicle is against our curbs over here and that we would find it pretty inconvenient to have to walk around the door to load items into the SUV. A liftgate is easier for us, but can't be done with the spare hanging on the outside. The simple and inexpensive solution is to redesign the "conventional" rear door and latch for our North American market.
I'm not sure about the 3.5, but CR recorded 18 mpg overall in mixed driving with their 2.7 AWD unit. Mine is a 2.4 I4 4-spd (discontinued): EPA fuel economy estimates are 20/27 -- I get an average of 20 mpg (mostly city). Based on this trend, I suggest the following real-world fuel economy estimates:
Of course, driving styles an climates play a major role in determining the actual numbers that a given vehicle will yield. So really, estimates are less useful in making accurate predictions and more useful in comparing models amongst each other. Anyway....
That's the only thing I'm really concerned about with the new '07 Santa Fe -- the fuel mileage. If the overall average is less than 20, then I'm not buying. I'm simply not wealthy enough to handle the (uncertain...volatile...upward-bound???) fuel costs for the 20,000-30,000 miles I'll be driving with the vehicle every year. I'm a university dean and I frequently travel across the state of Michigan, so mileage is definitely a major concern of mine. On the other hand, I have confidence that Hyundai will develop a more fuel-efficient conventional-fuel engine, as well as lighter-weight body and chassis components in a couple of years that will wind up with an average somewhere in the low 20's. At that point, I'll bite.
I'm pretty sure the '07 with the 2.7-liter Mu V6 won't dip below 20 mpg (at least in FWD format), but the 3.3-liter Lambda might by one mpg or two. Last generation, the Sonata and FWD Santa Fe tended to provide similar city mileage (though the SF does get less on the highway).
I'll try my best to get some actual estimates ASAP (i.e., at least more authoritative than the estimates I posted a couple of pages back).
Any info on price yet? I know loaded azura is $30,035.00. figured Santa Fe would be close with maybe upcharge fort the DVD player in back. I've beat the bushes but nothing. also nothing on the mpg city/hwy...
If you have cable tv, do you have On-Demand? Last Saturday on NBC, was a 2 hour long showcase of the Detroit Auto Show. It listed the estimated gas mileage and price range.
Once the improved diesel fuel is available, I can definitely see Hyundai introducing a VGT to the US. It may take a while, but the Santa Fe seems an ideal candidate.
I read somewhere Hyundai is developing a fuel efficient V6 with a CVT transmission with Santa Fe in mind. The engine develops 253 HP and gives 32 MPG on highway and 24 MPG in city when coupled with CVT. We might see it in future models.
I've heard a little something of this too -- though I wouldn't put too much stock in the details, as it seems a bit early in development for them to accurately state power and fuel economy estimates. But, who knows...? Perhaps it's the 3.5-liter Lambda-based V6 that Hyundai's been so hush-hush about.
If Hyundai can get true mileage in this area from a Santa Fe(not EPA estimates which are inflated by 15%) then sign me up. I'll buy the first one they make. Those mileage estimates align more with a Hybrid type Powertrain, especillay with the CVT.
I notice the Santa Fe is being offered with a 5 speed on the 2.7 V6. That's something the Escape and Vue don't offer with their V6s.
Be careful about the stealthy Saturn Vue. I believe its V6 is from Honda (3.5L, 240HP), and transmission is 5-speed Auto from Aisin. This combo will blow the door off any SUV in the same class, new Santa Fe included (may not the new RAV-4 with Avalon 3.5L)

Right. Except it's 250hp. The value of a Vue went up 100% when they plunked that Honda motor in it. I own a 2003 Vue with the old 181hp V6. Dang, a year too soon!
But back to the Santa Fe. The 2.7V6 with a 5sp could be an attractive alternative for those who don't mind shifting. Lower initial cost, good economy and good performance. Much better than the Vue 5sp that is only available with the puny 2.2 four.
I was able to have a look at the 2007 Santa Fe at the Chicago Auto Show today. To my surprise they actually had one open to the public (unlike the Ford Edge or Mazda CX-7). It is definitely a step-up from previous Hyundai's I've seen.
The only negative for me is the plastic wood trim. I didn't think that it looked that good in the pictures, but it looks even worse in person. The faux metal accent that runs above the wood trim is really bad too, in my opinion. Also the interior door handles are plastic "metal". I understand the need to cut costs, but the rest of the interior is so nice, it is a little bit of a shame.
All-in-all, still a nice car especially if it is $3,000 less than a comparable Highlander (which has too much wood too - although better looking wood). If it had navigation, I would be sold.
Another disadvantage when someone tailgating you in a tiny city street parking and when you try to loading and unloading stuffs. Another reason for the hinged door is probably designed for a small person. But what about mini-van? A spare tire can be mounted under the chassis, under the cargo area.
I noticed that you went to teh Chicage Auto Show and have pumpkin in your screen name. I'm a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan. Never got a chance to see them, but I did see Zwan. Oh yeah, thanks for the info on the Sante Fe.
Are we finally going to see a Hyundai with integrated XM satellite radio? I remember hearing how Hyundai was going to exclusively partner with XM after surveying their current customers. Sonata came out, didn't have it yet. Azera came out, didn't have it yet. Does anyone know if the Santa Fe will have it?
Thanks for the link, but I knew roughly that those were the plans. That release, however,is nearly a year old now. I was looking to see if anyone had heard anything recently.
Except one 2007 model, the Accent 3-door, will be out in a few weeks. The 2007 Santa Fe and 2007 Entourage will follow a few weeks after that. So I wonder if that means those cars will get XM mid-stream? I didn't see any mention of XM on the recent announcements for any of those vehicles.
Hi ! I just bought Santa Fe 2007. Greetings from Dubai, UAE. In fact, the new Santa Fe here in Dubai is going to be 2006 model and not 2007 as in the USA. It just came out two days ago. I love the new exterior design. Hyundai made a huge improvement from the old shape Santa Fe. The new model should sell well. I never consider buying Hyundai until I saw this car in the show room by chance. I was impressed with the built quality and the unique appearance. I made up my mind the same day.... The car's interior is not up the standards of Honda or Toyota, but it is noticeably better from the previous models. Then car drives well, handles great, comfort and size is much improved with 7 seats that will attract buyers everywhere. Unfortunately in this country they sell only 2.7 l engine and the standard GL as well as GLS models have only one driver's side air bag. (Obviously, safety standards in the USA are a big concern for Hyundai and not here in the UAE). GL model sells for AED75000 (US$ 20500), GLS model AED 78000 (US$21350). Top of the line model (only 2 airbags!?) sells for AED 89000 (US$ 24400). All inclusive of taxes. The new Santa Fe represents excellent value in comparison with RAV 4, Honda CR-V. The car looks stylish and rather will compete against Toyota Highlinder and Honda Pilot.

Yes,
Delphi is going to supply majority of Hyundai vehicles with XM radio (Santa Fe is one of them). Visteon will do the Sonata. It probably 07 model year since officially car maker can sell 07 vehicle from Jan 01, 2006 thru Dec 31, 2006
Huyndai is doing winter testing in Quebec City. They have many cars including the new Elantra and the new Santa Fe. It looked pretty big, I wonder if I saw the Santa Fe or it's new bigger brother. The car are wrapped but I know they are Hyundai, they use local dealers for maintenance and repair and there was an article about it in a local newspaper.
Im amaze that a new re-engineer car is to be released and the main concern is "sattelite radio"....lol
What about reliability and comfort??
Anyway....Im looking for an SUV and Hyundai is one of the candidates together with Mitsubishi, Saturn, Mazda and Subaru. Im not contemplating goint either Honda or Toyota.

I'm sorry you're "amazed" i asked the question I did. Never did I say it was my "main concern" either. Just a question I was hoping to find the answer to, which is exactly what most of the respondants aimed to help with. Much appreciation to them.
In response to your amazement, if you can tell me how anyone on here could answer the question "Exactly how reliable will the 2007 Santa Fe be?" I would be much more inclined to ask it. Waste of time. Comfort is a matter of personal experience, again a waste of time.
of course as part of Hertz' extensive Hyundai fleet.
Overall, I was very impressed. If the new model makes a significant improvement on the outgoing, I feel Hyundai will be in good shape; the lackluster aspects of the vehicle (coarsish 2.7L vs. weight, questionable plastics, body roll, no standard stability control) will be addressed...
I'm looking at the 2006 Santa Fe and the 2006 Rav4 and like both. The think I like about the 2006 Santa Fe is that they are heavly discouting them to just about $20,000(US) fully loaded. Is the 2007 Santa Fe worth the wait and additional $6,000. Do you have any opnions on the 2006?
Im also considering this......very nice vehicle and competitive price......(see testdrives in all terrains in the japanese site)..so far best SUV sales in Japan in last quarter of 2005 1stQ 2006. warranty: 10 years powertrain and 5 years in all the rest....
I don't know about the 2006 Santa Fe, but we just bought a 2005 with all the great rebates. We saved a ton and we have almost all of the bells and whistles to boot. We have the 3.5L V6 engine, which in my opinion was the only way to go as opposed to the 2.7L. I think personally for the money we saved with all of the little extras, it was a perfect choice. More value for the money. Santa Fe in comparison was the only way to go. It drives and rides very smooth, lots of interior room and in comparison to something like Honda CRV, the body style is much better. If you can locate a 2005 model, check out the rebates I believe they are as much as $3,500 right now - and if you have a Hyundai already, you get another $1,000 on top of that. its Crazy! Bottom line, its a great vehicle and you can't go wrong with the warranty.

just kidding.
Do you know if any suv's have the door hinged on the right side?
Does anyone know the actual mileage of the current Santa Fe.
Both the 2.7 & the 3.5???
We have a 2006 Sonata 3.5L it's runnig right at 20 mpg for semi-rural conditions.
2.7 FWD: 19 mpg overall
2.7 AWD: 18 mpg overall
3.5 FWD: 16-17 mpg overall
3.5 AWD: 16-17 mpg overall

It has a cassette player which will work for a portable player adapter better than wireless FM adapters do.
I've beat the bushes but nothing. also nothing on the mpg city/hwy...
While the 2.7 may be a little weak, the 5speed could help. With mileage, initial cost and performance. Hyundai is no dummy.
