CR-Vagain - Where's the harm in taking a test drive? If you like the old one, you'll probably like the new one. But there are pros and cons to each model. Take a few test drives before you make a decision.

Altoon - "That site" hasn't been updated in a while. They're still showing April's figures. You can get sales numbers from Hondanews.com in the news section.
Got my new C-RV for almost 6 months now and had my first oil change at the dealer today for $16.00 bucks. I only have 2500 miles on the odometer. So far me and my wife love it and no other problems except those normal crunk - grinding sound (which i read in this forum as normal for the new C-RV). Yup i recommend this toy.
Too bad about that site. It was interesting to compare sales numbers across the various makes. I did find the May numbers at Hondanews.com (11,727 if anyone else is interested). Honda should be quite thankful for the new CR-V and the Ody. Apparently passenger car sales are off significantly. Thanks
Do you have more informaation on Honda's sales figures for cars? By what percentage are their car sales down by? I don't know why, but I'm really curious about this.
I have 2002 EX-Auto. Does anyone hear how transmittion switches from reverse to forward. I hear a cliking sound everytime I switch from one position to the other. Is it normall ?
There is a short article at Hondanews.com discussing the increase in light truck sales for the month of May. They don't give specifics on the passenger car sales, but overall vehicle sales are down over 4% for the month of May despite double digit increases in sales for the Ody and V. Click on Headlines to find the article.
One reason for car sales being down may be because people are waiting for the new accord before the buying + the new camry is probably attracting a few honda buyers...
I'm about to buy a new CRV EX automatic. Would really really appreciate any pricing information that current owners have. I'm getting quotes at or slightly lower(~$200) than MSRP ($22,300). How do these compare to what other people have paid?
If you guys want to see very detailed monthly sales figures for ALL vehicles sold in the USA- all you need to do is to pick up a copy of Automotive News, the weekly dealer-oriented publication. They do have a site on-line, but it is very limited so that you will subscribe. Unfortunately, subscriptions are very expensive (it's a weekly) and run about $100 a year. I've been a subscriber for about 15 yrs and have always enjoyed reading it and getting an insight & perspective from the the other side. No, I am not a dealer or work for one, I'm just a fellow car nut.
I'm interested in the data, but for $100 a year...I can spend on better things.
Autosite.com has actually been very prompt in updating its data. I've only noticed that at the beginning of this year that they've taken so much longer to update the sales report. Perhaps they laid off the guy who used to do this on a monthly period?
i've got just under 1K miles on my '02 crv. first tank was 27.4 mpg, the second tank was 27.7. very pleased with this mileage, especially since it's still in break-in mode. probably ~70% highway miles.
...read the last 400 posts and catch up, but I'm finally back on track.
I've got a 2002 EX Auto with about 7200 miles on it and in the meantime;
1. My dealer had no success in fixing the reverse solenoid clicking noise. They told me they opened up the steering column but the problem could only be corrected by disassembling the shifter. Too much of a hassle.
2. I did have the rocking seat fixed thanks to the post with the TBS bulliten 02-017. (muddyduck: the parts you listed are the same as the ones for my fix) The problem is now gone.
3. Had my center tray replaced because the original broke. The swing hinge just stopped working and I couldn't fix it myself. The dealer replaced the whole tray.
4. I am keeping track of my milage since day one and have a range of 18.9 mpg to 24.4 mpg, with an average of around 21.5 mpg. I am very disappointed with these results. I am in philly and i've seen no improvement in milage with the break-in period or the warmer weather.
I aslo want to ask what others think of the deal I got when I purchased it. I traded in my 98 CRV ex auto with 50,000 miles (doors had a few dings and small scratches: i hate parking in philly) otherwise no major problems. I also gave them a check for $11,000 (this included taxes and any other fees associated with the deal)
I'm interested to hear what anyone else thinks about the deal.
Thanks,
PS I loved my '98 but the lack of power finally drove me nuts. The poor thing struggled to get up a hill when I had my hockey equipment in the back.
I am hoping to get your kind of mileage on my new '02 CRV (due late July). I really, REALLY do not want the low 20s reported by samstr and others on this board.
Are you driving a manual or automatic? I ordered a manual in hopes of getting the higher mileage.
Why concern yourself with the deal after the fact? If you were so worried, why didn't you negotiate a cash deal and then ask how much for your car? Maybe next time. Mine is coming in next month and I hope I have better luck than you. VARMINT: Are the recalls all taken care of in new production?
I have trouble understanding why a CR-V owner would be "very disappointed" with mpg in the low-to-mid 20s. It's what I expected, and it's what I got. Highway results in the upper 20s are attainable by driving at higher elevations where the air resistance is lower. I also wouldn't have high hopes of the stick-shift delivering a great advantage. Automatic transmissions have gotten better in recent years, and reports suggest that the CR-V's five-speed seems to be geared for optimal acceleration rather than fuel economy.
I'm very surprised that the standard soft spare tire cover causes the same damage to the CRV EX's spare wheel that bras do to hood paint. I have 3900 miles on my car and decided to check the rear tire pressure. The pressure was maxed out at 44 psi but I notice that the wheel and plastic liner in the tire cover were rubbing causing damage to the rear wheel clear coat. I use polishing compound and removed most of the scratches and also put masking tape on the areas of the wheel that come into contact with the plastic liner. RECOMMEND: everyone check their spare wheels for this problem on 2002 EX's.
would like to hear your reponses on the board thanks rockycow
... so frustrating... Just left the dealer after my second visit with the new CRV... love all but the seats... heck, I was uncomfortable after the 5 min test drive... how would they fare over a 5 hour drive?? There seems to be NO thigh support at all... I'm not sure I've seen any discussion of this topic on the board... anyone besides me have trouble with the seats??
how can you be disappointed with low 20's mpg!? consider how heavy the CRV is and anything in the 20's is great. when i used to have a 98 CRV i only got 18.5 mpg in it so low 20's would make me pretty happy.
The seats are height adjustable...and it adjusts the tilt slightly also. Try playing with the height knob to find a comfortable position. I'm much more comfortable in the driver's seat than the passenger seat because of this adjustment
Just bought an 02 CR-V EX and was wondering if anyone has the factory security system. I am considering getting the alarm system but was wondering if the door locks automatically lock when you start the car and unlock when you turn the car off. I had this feature in an alarm system I had in my old car and loved it.
Just installed Keyless Entry and Factory Security System. NO, it does not have the auto lock/unlock keyed to the ignition. You have to manually lock/unlock the doors. It was not hard to install as the car is prewired for keyless entry and alarm system.
I'm dissapointed with the milage because it advertises as 22 city and 26 highway. I average 21 and I've never gone over 300 miles on a tank with my '02. I worry about running the tank dry.
I went over 300 miles/tank regularly with my '98 EX auto without having the feul light come on. Unfortunately i did not keep track of milage with the '98 but i'm assuming they have the same size tank. That would mean I got better milage with my '98....wouldn't it?

I believe that the 2002 has the same size gas tank as previous model years (15.3 gal.), but the low fuel indicator and its behavior may have changed in the redesign, so I wouldn't be ready to make direct comparisons based on that light.
Even the EPA admits that "the mpg obtained by most drivers will be within a few mpg of the estimates." FWIW I put more faith in those numbers than the financial estimates from Wall Street. And I know which ones will end up having a bigger impact on my bottom line in the end.
also dont forget the advertised numbers of 22 and 26 are based on driving within the speed limit. speed limits vary from state to state/city to city as does driving habits.
Your particular driving style and environment has a lot to do with your mileage.I have about 5 miles of freeway and another 5 of stoplights on my 10 mile trip to work and I get 20 MPG which is what my 96 Outback got.If you don't accelerate hard and drive the speed limit you will do better but not as good as a sleek sportscoupe due to air resistance.AWD adds weight so an LX 2wd will be the best choice if gas mileage is your concern. I had a 98 Explorer that got 15 mpg on this route and the fuel light would come on at 200 miles, so this CRV is a lot better.
Here's another shot of my 'V from our trip to the Withlacoochee State Forest last week. I'm starting to think I need to get the OEM foglights both to help out with night driving and to break up the monotony of the vast black bumper. Can anyone with the 2nd gen fogs tell me if they provide much extra light? They seem kind of small, at least in appearance. The other thing I'd like to eventually do is get the Jaos skid bar which has another set of mounting points for some serious bug zappers.
I've got the fog lights, and like them very much. They add a decent amount of light "underneath" your normal headlight pattern, but the thing I like most is that they add more light towards the sides of the front of the car. so it's a wide low band of light, which helps me pick up details on the sides of wooded back roads, etc.
I'm happy with mine, especially considering how well they integrate with the bumper. If you're looking for a wide beam of light under your headlight pattern, I think they work great. If you're looking for off-road lights or something to just pump out a lot of light in a forward direction, I'd probably look elsewhere.
Yeah, I'd like something to help brighten things up down low and to the edge of the roadway so I guess the OEM fogs would be great for that. The other thing I'd like to add is some off-road or driving lights. I had a cheap set of 100 W bugzappers mounted on a Safari Bar on my old 1st gen which I really liked (see pic below). Great for penetrating into the darkness far down the road in an isolated area so you can see deer, etc. I had them hooked up with the 1st gen OEM foglight wiring harness and switch. So far the only way I can figure out how to mount something like these on a 2nd gen is on the Jaos.
I recently installed the Keyless Remote Entry and the Security System. The security system does NOT automatically lock/unlock the doors via the ignition system.
I ordered the 2nd gen. foglights off one of the discount honda accessory sites and I installed them myself. I think they look really nice on the vehicle and they do provide a lot of light for their size. They are just as bright, if not more brighter then the first gen. OEM lights.
BTW you can adjust the aim of the light with a philips screw driver right through an exisiting hole in the bumper, easy as pie.
Steve... sorry for the solicitation above in my last post.
Hey all, the Euro NCAP crash test results were revealed today and the 2nd gen 'V got 4 stars, not bad considering only 2 vehicles have ever received 5 stars in the entire history of the NCAP tests. See THIS link for details. One weird thing they test over there is pedestrian friendliness, in which the 'V got 3 stars - the highest score of the group.
"I'm dissapointed with the milage because it advertises as 22 city and 26 highway. I average 21 and I've never gone over 300 miles on a tank with my '02. I worry about running the tank dry."
Same here. I believe the fuel gauge was way off. For each fill-up while the indicator pointing CLOSE to empty, 11.5 gallon was the most I've ever put in the gas tank. 4 gallon for reserve? You can travel a hundred miles with that many gas on the interstates. I worry about running the tank dry too, so I usually refeul the CRV after 260-280 miles. My wife's Toyota Camry (4 cyl.) can go 400+ miles with 3/4 tank of gas. Honda's customer service doesn't believe there is a problem with the fuel gauge in general. (Honda's # 1-800-999-1009). The way I see it is that the gas tank is too small ( Big enough for the Civic) and a low-tech gas gauge.
EuroNCAP uses a much tougher scoring system than here in the U.S. Only two vehicles to date have gotten 5-stars in their tests, and one of them only made it because of a (silly, to me) rules change).
Their rating combines the scores from their offset front (similar to IIHS's) and side-impact tests. So the 4-star performance by the CR-V is very good.
They also test pedestrian crash capability. The CR-V got 3 stars out of 4, which is excellent.
"In the group of results released today, it is good to see that the Honda CRV achieved 3 stars for pedestrian protection, the highest score amongst its group. However, the pedestrian rating scores of the other vehicles are still disappointing, and I look forward to more vehicles earning higher scores."

What kind of mileage have you all been getting?
I have been getting low 23's to high 24's.
