My Sirius renewal comes up on Oct 14th...that's when my new car is supposed to arrive with 6 months free Sirius.
So, this subscription runs out just as my free one starts. The guy on the phone was almost in tears, he tried transfering it to my wife's car, tried having me buy a free standing portable unit, everything.
They probably wish they could take away the free service I will be getting....they kind of lost me for 6 months.
Renewal amount is $175. I only paid $90 when I threatened to cancel. They keep trying, you have to stay one step ahead of them.
Mike, they don't have that weather/traffic feature in Canada yet.

Not any more, driver. A car sold in Florida has the same pollution devices and restrictions as those sold in CA, NY, S.DAK, etc.

not sure if I posted this before, but I finally cut the Sirius cord after many years. I was just finding that, more and more, I was flipping through all my stations and finding nothing on.
Based on experience, I knew cancelling is a huge hassle with them, so when I received a "bill" in the mail, I wrote on there to cancel and mailed it back. About a month later, I get an "overdue bill" from them. So I email them about it. They respond that I have to call to cancel on the phone. I wrote back telling them I am not interested, I already cancelled in writing through snail mail and now through email, and it is their choice if they want to continue providing me free service. The next response was that they would go ahead and cancel me and I would receive a prorated bill for the service I have already used. I wrote one last time and told them what they could do with that bill because I did not renew and I had cancelled by snail mail at an earlier date. They stopped bothering me after that and I never received any more bills.
The new van has free Sirius at the moment. That car is in my wife's name, so she can deal with it if she wants. I'll stick with my iphone now.

Back in '99 when I was shopping for a Lincoln LS I learned that what was offered in Canada was worlds different to what was being offered in the U.S.
For my purposes the Canadian version was more attractive, but the logistics were oppresive. Not impossible, but oppressive. The Canadian car was thousands less, fitted out the way I wanted it.
There were a few weak explanations as to how this was possible, but the fact remained that there were people facilitating buying cars in Canada and transferring them to the U.S. Seems that the primary argument was that warranty service would be difficult, as if someone actually living in Canada who had bought one of these and moved to the U.S. would be put out on the street.
The LS was an odd car that at one time was considered by FMC to be a world car. That lasted about 20 minutes, but it was an interesting time.
US could be different than Canada but when I called one option was to dial a number to stop your subscription. In the case of Sirius it seems better to call them if you want to unsubscribe. I noted the person I talked to and the time in case of a disagreement. Just by luck, I have a different credit card so they can't try anything there either.
It is too bad a company can't operate more transparent. I don't like giving them my credit card and I don't like being charged almost double if I don't play their game...of going around their notice.

I found the same thing. I listened to only one channel - 17 (Love, which is soft rock). I never listen to talk radio or news when I am driving - just music.
I use my iPhone much more - either via Bluetooth or iPod wire connection which charges the phone too. We have great FM HD reception here and there are several great soft rock stations which sound 3 times better than satellite.
The only thing I subscribe to is traffic and weather which is $70 a year including fees. Both show up on my NAV screen.

Q, similar thing years ago when moving from Phoenix. Bank sent me a bill for $5 after closing my account and getting cash then moving to Virginia Beach.
Seems there is a point when closing that you go below the minimum balance and they can assess a fee, I kept mailing the bill back saying, why did your teller give me all my cash? I think you're making this up. After 4 or 5 more such letters I said your postage is costing more than your fake charge. Give it a break, pal. The letters stopped.

Cars do have different options in Canada than US, and often different standard equipment. Heated seats and sometimes steering wheels are often standard here, AWD seems to be standard on higher end cars, All Season Tires, in Ontario we have to have running lights
In 1999 my wife wanted a Mercedes. I was leaning toward a Cadillac Catera....until I looked at the interior. It was also a world car, but, just wasn't up to the same standards as a Mercedes or bmw. I am so glad we didn't buy one! The LS was Fords answer to the world market, the Catera was Cadillacs.

My major problem with Sirius ( and many other companies) is that they subcontract their customer service activities to out-of-country providers that speak English so poorly I usually end up hanging up on them.
They don't understand me and I can't understand them. That is a super major complaint I have with these companies. You spend three to four times more time on the phone with them than with businesses that use home grown contractors.
I am not prejudiced - I'll talk with anyone from any country so long as I understand what they are communicating and they understand me.
Examples of this are customer service at Sirius/XM, Norton/Symantec, Hewlett Packard (sometimes, not all the time), etc.

No driver, that is not the reason I buy new cars - it was getting close to having to get an oil change and I don't do oil changes - haven't had one in 8 years. Getting free Sirius is just a positive by-product of getting a new car!!!!!

I just finished watching a movie on HBO entitled ENDER'S GAME. At first I was going to turn it off because it looked like some kid's movie about teenagers involved in a military academy whose goal was to destroy aliens at their home planet 50 years after the aliens attacked Earth. I'll add here that I am a staunch SciFi fan.
They showed the cast and it included Harrison Ford and Sir Ben Kingsley so I decided to continue watching it because of the all star cast.
It was an outstanding film adapted from a. 1984 book by the same title. It was really about morality. As this teen ENDER states, "...it's not just about winning at war, but rather the "way" we win."
If you get HBO, go to ON DEMAND HBO, movies, and search for ENDER'S GAME. Definitely a nail biter and very worthwhile.

When I worked for a major publishing company Enders Game was one of our biggest scores, and it made Orson Scott Card very popular. I know it gets great reviews and people loved it, but, I don't normally read sci-fi myself. Mostly mysteries and legal thrillers. But, the story line you described makes it sound very good - when I get a chance I will try to watch it.
Where else can you get tips on shaving, know the sunroof count in various parts of the country, learn how to deal with Sirius, get movie reviews, save $1500 buying a car, and have a few jokes along the way?

Funny, my wife just mentioned that our thermometer says 90°F (at 7:35 PM), though the "official" temp is down to 85°. I had to put my long sleeved T on a short while ago - she freezes me out with the AC. Fortunately I can just step outside to warm up or walk down to the hot tub (unlike our last place in the UP, where it's currently 45°).
btw, that F was for @driver100. We're talking 29.6 °C and 7.2 °C.
I found similar characteristics among people in the upper Midwest of the US.
Such a contrast to the brusk nature of most New Yorkers that I never forgot it.
I wonder how Bradd ended up being so nice too.

I was born and raised in NYC. I moved to the Chicago area to get my MA and PhD and lived there for 23 years. I lost my NY accent and developed a Midwestern twang.
The longer I lived in the upper Midwest, the greater my negative attitude about easterners grew. Midwesterners find NY'ers arrogant, self-serving and obnoxious. For the most part I had to agree with that assessment since I was one of them. I slowly toned down my aggressiveness and became a born-again Midwesterner.
Bradd is an exception to be sure - and remember the comments above are generalizations and cannot be applied to all NY 'ers or easterners. But every time I interacted with a New York City inhabitant, that same arrogance and aggressiveness that I found in myself at times when I first arrived there became evident.

While waiting in the parking lot I noticed that it resembled a luxury car dealer. There were multiple BMW 3s, 5s, 7s and every MB series. There was even TWO Maseratis.

I used to frequent Albany frequently when I was in my late teens and early 20's. Had family friends who lived on Colonial Avenue - used to go on skiing outings with them. The family owned a huge record distributorship there (1960's) and they often took me for dinner at their country club, I believe it was Shaker Ridge, near the airport.
I remember we were having dinner at the club and I was scheduled on a flight from Albany to LaGuardia - the service was slow and I was afraid I would miss my flight. The father of that family called Mohawk Airlines and they held the flight for me for 15 minutes so I wouldn't miss the flight. I remember that well because tgere are very few Wheeler Dealers who could pull something like that off. He was very influential in the Albany area - an understatement!!!

@nelsonf We are over in Ballard. Not too far.
@isellhondas One of my coworkers commutes from Issaquah and another from Sammamish - they said the weather differences can be astounding.
I find people in Florida are generally very nice. Frontline retail and food service workers are very friendly and polite. It is a state where the economy does rely on visitors, so that probably helps.
It seems the people who retire or live in Florida for part of the year are pretty nice too. They don't have the dog eat dog attitude anymore. They have the time to talk and play golf. Life is generally, a little more laid back.
Then, there is Key West.................................

I think any time you have a large population packed into a small area you get a dog eat dog mentality. People fight to get in line for groceries, to get on a bus or subway. People don't have time to talk to each other and neighbors don't really know each other. Driving or walking is all a hassle, so people become more insulated.
Of course, there are exceptions, as we well know.
One thing I noticed about New Yorkers though. With all those problems, they don't want to live anywhere else. There is so much excitement about living in such a vibrant place, living somewhere else just wouldn't be living.

For those who don't know the 401 is the busiest highway in Canada and goes across the top of Toronto. Traffic jams and rolled over trucks every day. I used to have to drive on it every day, and I called it "driver roulette" because I knew one day my day would come up....the odds are you will be involved in an accident if you drive it for too long.
Fortunately I got canned from that job before an accident got me. To get to work I had a 2 hour commute, each way (4 hours total) every day. Fortunately I got canned before I had a break down. I was getting ready to quit but getting a pink slip was better, a few $1000 severance and they paid $1400 for one kids orthodontal work.

We've always found NYers in Manhattan to be super nice.
My theory is that's because they don't have to dink around with cars, car maintenance and the inevitable car repairs.

Isn't Yonge (pronounced "young" for those of us south of the border) the longest street in the world?

It is generally considered so, but that would depend upon your definition of "street". The true definition of "street" is a public thoroughfare through a built up area (urban/suburban area). I would think that most of Yonge is in rural areas and therefor not considered a street for the entire length.

Back to cars, we drove crosstown to look at a house and did about a 12 mile loop. I counted two convertibles, tops up and saw around 12 sunroofs, including a panoramic one on a MINI. Three were popped open and two of those were "venting" in parking lots. More normal numbers I guess but the count still seems low.
