the rear hatch as well, ES 4X4....took me a while to figure it out, but then I RTFM and gave it a try and low and behold it opens all the doors and the hatch on the second click.
  • bclambbclamb Member Posts: 10
Thanks to all of you that pointed out I have a defective hatch release, since my remote doesn't unlock it and I trusted the salesman who told me it wasn't supposed to. (gee, trusting a car salesman, kinda foolish wasn't it?) I will be taking the Trib to the dealer to get this repaired, and I do appreciate the info from all of you. The salesman explained the quote from the manual by saying the rear hatch wasn't a door, and I bought his logic. Oh well, I will keep the Trib but won't have to keep the salesman!

I had test driven a Tribute in late October and I sent in the dealer signed and completed Gift Certificate request form. I had it postmarked by November 1, as directed, waited 8 weeks for my certificate and heard nothing. I was one of MAZDA'S biggest fans, having driven a Miata for 11 years and 230,000 trouble free miles. I was so impressed by MAZDA and their product that I was all geared up to buy a Tribute. I finally gave up after not being able to get any accurate information from various dealers as to the delays on the Tribute. It is frustrating when the consumer is passing on product information to the sales person! I still think that MAZDA might have a winner here, and I'm glad to see that so many people are happy with their product. But, between Mazda's poor communication skills and the feeling that I would be buying more of a FORD than a MAZDA, I gave up. I think that MAZDA could really benefit from monitoring these forums and listening to their customers and potential customers comments.

Regarding my certificate, I called MAZDA at the following number, 1-800-236-2871, and was told that instead of the stated 4-6 week delivery time for the certificates, it would be 14-16 weeks. If you're waiting and thinking that MAZDA forgot about you, well it may still be on its way. Anyway, you might want to hold on to the above phone number if you don't hear anything.

Happy zooooming to all of you Tribute owners.

My wife and I are now proud owners of a Mystic Black 4x4 ES purchased from Quality Mazda in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at a great deal of just over $500 below MSRP, plus additional negotiated "throw-ins" that got us at over $800 below MSRP. Our salesman was very knowledgeable and says they are having no problems receiving their allotment of Tributes. I recommend anyone in the Southeastern market to give David Wedgeworth at call at 800-663-4240. And please tell him the Brady's recommended him.

I finally received my tribute in time for Christmas it was ordered first week of Sept, but worth the wait I love it so far. It's at the dealers being checked as to why the rear defroster will not shut off automatically after 10 minutes as the manual states and once you turn the engine off and then back on it comes back on by itself again. As anyone else had this problem. The salesman try telling me this was normal and it's a rare car that shuts off automatically actually this is first car I ever had (had plenty over the years and different models) that did not shut off auto. then he tried telling me that mazda is recalling some manuals "SAY WHAT?" ginp

for fultant I saw a white tribute at NUcar in Wilmington DE but did not take notice as to which model it was and what packages it had ginp

Ginny, some of the original manuals had omitted some information about the anchor points for child car seats. I got a new manual in the mail from Mazda, which I thought was nice considering they could have mailed one or two pages and just said to insert them in your current manual. Congratulations on your new Tribute, I've got over 6K miles on mine in just 10 weeks. This zoom-zooming is fantastic!

I have one ES V6 4X4 left. It is Desert Metallic and it has the Luxury Package, Towing Package, and ABSw/Side Air Bags. If you want to reserve this one, please let me know. This is the last one that I will have until at least May.

after reading the discussions about mazda and ford suv's i must be the only one in the country that is getting horrendous gas mileage from my 2001 mazda tribute. i have 500 miles on the car now, with 3 tankfulls of gas the best mileage i have gotten is 13 miles to the gallon. i have the 200horse v6 mazda tribute lx model. mazda technicians are telling me about more gas used in winter, road friction, and it needs to be broken in, with no idea of how many miles that will take. any ideas out there would be greatly appreciated-thanks carl@velocity.net other than this enormous problem, i am very pleased with the suv from mazda/ford.

The Yahoo Tribute Owners Club has covered most aspects of this problem... Visit http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/mazdatributeownersclub for the best and most responses... I'll try to summarize what I've seem so far though...

Be assured you're not the only one... I guess some of the engines act differently than others... I myself with 3 tankfuls am averaging about 18.75 mpg. I've heard of lots of people getting around what you're getting.

Some things I've learned about the Tribute since it's been released is that the best results have come from following the suggested octane to be used for the tribute which is 87. For the second tank I actually used 89 octane and got significantly less gas mileage.

The manual says that "there is no typical way to break in the engine and just to vary speeds during the first 1000 miles." I've also been told be several people that the only thing about breaking in is that you shouldn't work he transmission too much. You can go fast but no constant cycle of accelerating or decelerating... Consider the overall break in period the first 5000 miles though (or when your manual says you should perform the first oil change)...

I've also heard several reports of owners who were going through the same problem as you are for the first couple of thousand miles or so. Then suddenly, those people were getting twice the mileage that they were getting prior. They assumed that they had broken the engine in due to their recent results...

Otherwise than what's stated above, the only thing I can think of that may be hindering the engines performance is the way you may be driving the truck. Maybe too hard, too soft. I've been doing about 75 on the highway and am getting good results with that... No cold starts and remember to put as low stress on the transmission as possible...

    That's all I can offer...

    HTH

Ginp - Mine does the same - I was going to ask when I'm in for my first oil change next month. Keep us posted on what you find out. Thanks.

When I first got my Trib last October, I drove to a friends place about 1.5 hours away, all highway driving, and it took almost a full tank round trip (ouch!). At Christmas, went again to same place, and round trip took about half a tank. Not sure what this works out to for MPG, but definite improvement. At Christmas was at about 3k miles. Don't know if this helps, but I've heard MPG rates increase up to 5k miles (or 3k depending on who you talk to), and my experience seems to be consistent. Good luck.

our trib's rear defroster does NOT go off by itself.......someone posted earlier that their's
does indeed auto-off after 10 or so minutes. as stated before, its kind of a pain as the infamous shifter sits right in front of the defroster button light......maybe mazda service can fix it without breaking something else:):)

I have spoken to my dealer and they inform me that the defroster does not automatically shut off that is the way it is. It will only shut off if it needs to to cool down but will come right back on. The only way is to shut it off manually leaving it on will have no illeffect. For those with the fuel smell Mazda now states they have a fix. they have made new gaskets and will replace them on the manifold and torque them down to a new spec.call your service re for an apt mine stated they have the gaskets just need the truck for overnight.

The NHTSA crash test results for the 2001 Mazda Tribute are due to be released in Feb. 2001. You will find the results at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cap/cars/1704.html

If you'd like to see the results of other 2001 SUVs already tested, you can find that at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cap/cars/2001SUVs.html
  • ginpginp Member Posts: 3
The dealer checked defroster out and states that's how it works will have to manually turn it off. they also copied their manual page where it states you have to manually turn it off. our only question now is we've been using defroster every morning since we got the car in Dec. why did we only noticed it staying on this week is it us or the car????? Guess I can learn how to turn it off, if that's my only complaint so far.
  • windowphobe6windowphobe6 Member Posts: 765
On the 626, the defroster runs 15 minutes, cycles off for 3 minutes, cycles on for 2 minutes, and continues until the switch is turned off or the ignition is switched off. The indicator light remains on even during the off cycle.

Just wondering if anyone owns a DX 5-speed, 4x4. If so how is the gas mileage and are you happy with the Tribute?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The only thing I did not like about the Tribute LX 4x4 V6 I checked out at the car show last night (complete with moonroof and ABS too) was the cheap feeling of the door handles on the inside. Also, I cannot get over the whole initial recall thing, and the fact that the engine is a Ford one. How is everyone's Tribute holding up as of yet? I know it hasn't been long term yet, but I hope asking will give me some idea of how reliable this vehicle is. Also, does the Tribute handle as good as Mazda wants you believe? Thanks.
  • jmlagascajmlagasca Member Posts: 37
I agree with you about the feeling of the door handles... no biggie to me though as I don't even notice them unless I really think about it. I love my Trib so far (Mystic Black ES 4wd) and wouldn't give it up for anything.

The recalls are a bit disheartening about the car but they're in the past and have been taken care of so far with no casualties. Who knows if there will be any recalls in the future but assuming that there are, I'm sure Mazda and Ford will address them as quickly as possible (as they've been doing so far). Just to mention, the past recalls have only affected a small percentage of the actual units built (except for the windshied wipers). Also, news is brewing that there will be another recall to fix the problem of the fuel smell some people are experiencing.

As far as the handling is concerned. I greatly enjoy driving it. At first, I have to admit that I was scared to push it into corners and such but once I did, I was really surprised!!! It handles better than any SUV out there and the handling is comparable to a family sedan (it's not a sports car though)...

Just recently got my tribute sunfire red...and still loving it. I get confused sometimes between the shift lever and the window wiper, but I guess I'll get used to it. Anyway, has anyone used the zaino product for car wax? Need some feedback or maybe someone can direct me to a site that talks about car wax.

I work for a company that is a supplier for Mazda. How much money do you actually save by purchasing a Mazda through the S-Plan Price. Supposely the S-Plan price is on the invoice that the dealer gets. The price is suppose to be equal to the invoice price.

I am thinking about buying a Tribute using this S-Plan.

    Has anybody used this plan??
  • rutegerruteger Member Posts: 60
I used the S-plan to purchase my 4wd LX. The S-plan price is actually invoice price, less 1.22% of the total invoice price. The destination charge is not included in any computation and must be added in its entirety. My dealer also tacked on around a $100 in the usual 'miscellaneous fees' but I didn't see them until after I looked the contract over more closely when I got home. I missed them the first time because they had included them in with the state sales tax. Pretty sneaky.

Be advised that Mazda has given dealers discretion on allowing S-plan purchases of LX/ES Tributes due to the current popularity of those models right now. In other words, they don't have to honor your S-plan eligibility on an LX/ES Tribute if they don't want to. My dealer did, so I guess I got a pretty sweet deal: $22,322 (4wd LX, Tow, ABS, Moonroof, Mats). The MSRP on the window sticker was $24,540. They gave me $13k for my '99 Miata, so, after tax, title and license and with my trade, the difference to me ended up being around $9.9k.

I didn't really care about or want the ABS or Moonroof but after reading the forums and discovering how many people want these things and how hard it is to get them on a Tribute right now, I'm now glad mine has them for future resale value.

    Good luck.

I've had by Tribute ES up here in the frozen north since October and it handles great in all weather. No problems with it at all. Love it and no regrets.

For the recalls, if you check out the NHTSA site, the recalls were really more line stopages, with only a few hundred cars recalled for each (except for the wipers, which were a bit more I think). The recalls, although a little troubling, were NOT massive recalls that affected many people.

For the cheap interior parts, as well as the stupid shift lever, got to agree. You get used it to though, and keep in mind this is an entry level SUV, not a luxury one. You want nice parts, fork out another $10k and you got it. For the money though, the Trib can not be beat - not even close.

I may be interested in buying a Tribute. I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not Ford's A plan could apply to a Tribute purchase since the 2 companies are connected?

    Thanks
  • djomahadjomaha Member Posts: 2
I just got a call from my dealer telling me the fix they did on my windshield wipers was temporary and that the factory sent them parts that will allow them to fix them properly. This isn't a big deal to me but I wanted to let others know. I'm not sure if it applies to everyone or not either, but you might want to check. I know when my wipers stopped working on the interstate when it was snowing, it wasn't a good situation. :)

Purchased a green 4WD ES with all extras, including sunroof and ABS, and waited 3 months for it. It was worth the wait, and my wife and I both consider it to be a superb vehicle. The handling is A+ (our other car is a 5 series BMW), and for a 25K SUV the quality is also superb. Everything works, and none of the reported recall problems have been encountered. We live on top of a hill, and in snow and ice it seems to be glued to the road. Only two minor things: mileage as others have noted is around 18 combined, and never received the "gift" from Mazda for our long wait. The car is one of the best we have ever owned, so far! It may well be that those without problems are not really taking the time to write, or that Mazda had gotten their act together by this point, and the produced units are now really the best!
  • alotawattsalotawatts Member Posts: 44
The Mazda gift if you do not know is a yellow backpack with the Mazda logo. After a three month wait on our Tribute order we gave up and I am very glad we did . A month or so later this 'Gift' appeared in the mail.
It's bright yellow ..... I'm going to use it as a poop bag for my dog when I take him in my new Toyota 4Runner to the park for a walk. Maybe I should post it on Ebay....some idiot wll probably bid $50.00 .

My wife and are tall. Our concerns have to do with head room and leg room in the Tribute. Specifically, if we accomodate backseat passengers by moving the front seats forward a bit, will we be miserable? Thanks! Sam
  • rick_lrick_l Member Posts: 8
    Samboh;

I am 6'3" ( my wife is only 5'4"). When I was buying my Tribute I was happy with the leg room in the drivers seat. It has as much leg room as any other vehicle I can think of. I was worried that with the roof being lowered to accommodate the moon roof, that perhaps I should order a Tribute without the moon roof.

Well I liked the moon roof so much I took a chance and ordered it anyway. I am happy to report that there is enough headroom with about 2" to spare. Without the moon roof there is probably about 5" of clearance.

With regards to back seat space, the leg room behind the drivers seat ( which I must keep all the way back in order to drive) is fine for a child or an adult on shorter trips. My wife can move the passenger seat forward and this allows plenty of room for an average sized adult behind her. The problem in the back seat is that the lowered roof is definitely a problem. The width is suitable for 3 children. I drove for an hour once with 3 adults in the back and they were rubbing hips all the way.

Cargo space isn't the greatest even with the rear seats folded, but it is suitable for our needs. Mazda claims you can carry an 8'x4' sheet of plywood and that is true. However 3' will stick out the window, and I don't believe your wood can stack more than 1" thick because the window opening begins to narrow from the base to the top.

I got a Tribute under the S-plan, came out to $280 below invoice. The hard part is to find a dealer willing to accept a S-plan for purchase since they do not have to (same as Ford X-plan). The Dealers have to accept an E-plan purchase request, Mazda's version of the A-plan.

If you are eligible for the A-plan, you are eligible for Mazda's equivalent E-plan. On Mazda's Invoice, both the E-plan and S-plan are printed, on Ford's only the A-plan is printed and X-plan is calculated at 4% above that price. E-plan is about 5% below invoice.
  • rutegerruteger Member Posts: 60
    > The hard part is to find a dealer willing to accept a S-plan for purchase since they do not have to (same as Ford X-plan). <

That's not entirely true. My understanding is that the dealers have to accept requests for Mazda S-plan and Ford X-plan purchases, but only on DX Tributes and (I'm guessing) XLS Escapes.

It's currently at dealer discretion whether to accept S or X plan purchases on LX/ES Tributes or XLT Escapes because of the present hot seller's market for those models. Once supply catches up with demand, I'm sure the restriction will be lifted.

I know I didn't have much difficulty buying my LX at the S-plan price. One dealer said he would be happy to sell me any Tribute I wanted at the S-plan price, in stock or otherwise. Unfortunately, he only had DXs in stock at the time and I didn't feel like waiting. I got lucky and found one remaining LX close enough to what I wanted at another dealer who sold it to me at the S-plan price.

Having read about the tight supply of Tributes in Charlotte, NC, and after having dealers laugh at any attempt to negotiate on price, I found an answer in Columbia, SC at Pulliam-Wray. They had every color and was willing to take $1000 over invoice. The person to contact is Tom Ketchem at 1-800-424-0183. The customer service was excellent. The deal was made over the telephone and we picked up the tribute today. No hassles period. See for yourself.

I am planning to buy a mid size SUV that can accommodate a Class II Hitch. I was pleased with the price tag on the Mazda Tribute but the question over the Ford engine and its reliability. I know that everyone is entitled to an opinion and some of them scare me away from the Tribute. One of the comments was that it was a Ford through and through and the cranny it not a reliable one. I was talking to some friends and they commented that Ford stood for "Fix or Repair Daily". I own a Nissan Altima. now and need a SUV for my outdoor activities as I am getting married and there are two kids plus mom and dad. I want to hook on a Yakima Terry something 4 bike rack that accommodates a class II hitch. My husband has a CR it lack power and I believe that it was not worth the price he paid for it. I want a good vehicle at a reasonable price. I like the Jeep but with it being discontinued will the parts be available for the duration of the warranty or as long as I plan to own the car. Any suggestions??? I appreciate all those with knowledge that I do not possess to rescue me for my analytical insanity.

    Thanks in New York

I've been trying to buy a Tribute AS fully equipped including AS/side air bags since the first of December. The sales person has put me off saying that Mazda wasn't taking any orders for that model and now says that they will not take any order with AS until March. They quoted me what appears to a good price, does anyone know if this is true or are they just trying to discourage the sale?

Has anyone across or seen how to rewire the fog lights to work alone and with high beam? I would love to wire my lights to work with my oark lights and have them work in high beam. I have searched the web with no luck. If anyone has seen this info. can you please post it here. I must say that I love my Silver Tribute. It just keeps zooming and zooming. For all of you out there waiting the wait is worth it and also you may look around. I got everything that I wanted on a lot except for Sunroof and ABS. Not a bad trade off since how I just walked onto the lot without a wait and got it $500.00 below invoice.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I don't know where you are or anything, but I had fog lamps put into my Mazda Protege at a store called Best Buy in the audio department. They weren't original equipment though. But they wired the fog lights to work with the parking lights and headlamps and high beams too. But truly, fog lamps are illegal to turn on without parking lamps, and are not much good when used with the high beams in fog because the high beams "bounce" off the fog. Check for a Best Buy location anyway if you can.

I'm still waiting for the Mazda LX-V6 with ABS that I ordered since the beginning of November. Just recently I was told that my SUV was awaiting the ABS brakes and that is why it is not in the production line yet. I live in PA which is relatively snowy in the winter. When I called my sales rep to fond out when and if I get my Mazda, he told me that I could probably take delivery of a Tribute without ABS quicker than I would with. Anyone have any feedback on the ABS and if I really need it? I'm thinking of getting one without--so I could have it sooner. Just getting tired of waiting!
  • looboolooboo Member Posts: 7
We have ABS on our Outback, also living in Pennsylvania. All I can say is that I would never buy another vehicle without them. Definitely a plus in slippery weather- go for it.
  • troyy2ktroyy2k Member Posts: 91
I test drove the 2 vehicles, and the 220 hp Highlander seems slower and less agile, less fun to drive, and has poorer handling than the Tribute.

Does anybody get a similar impression??
  • rick_lrick_l Member Posts: 8
I had rear wheel ABS on the Mazda MPV van which I just traded in on my Tribute with all wheel ABS.

I hated ABS on the van. On rainy days, or when driving on loose gravel, I had to be very careful that I never applied the brakes hard enough to activate the ABS. Once a rear wheel locked up, it seemed that brake pressure was released to the rear wheels and suddenly the front wheels did the breaking for the entire vehicle. I could actually feel my vehicle accelerate ( defined as a decrease in de-acceleration) when the ABS activated.

Needless to say I was not to keen on getting ABS again, but since I wanted the moon-roof and premium sound system I also got ABS.

I am very happy to report that the ABS in the Tribute is vastly improved over the MPV. I live in Ontario and I have experimented with braking distances in the snow. I beleive I can still stop quicker at threshhold braking (i.e. maximum brake pressure just prior to wheel lockup) than I can by stomping hard on the pedal.

In other words there is nothing wrong with having the new ABS, and others could argue that there is some losses involved by having it. The argument about having steering control during panic stops is a good one, but at higher speeds we all know that we can't make sudden steering changes without applying the brakes, so ABS can't change the laws of physics .

It is at the dealers discretion to accept these plans on ANY tributes and of course it all comes down to supply.
  • john1726john1726 Member Posts: 37
The dealer can order any Tributes they want. It does not mean the order will be picked up. I suspect that either they do not want to honor the pricing that the quoted you or they do not want to order a vehicle that they are not sure they will ever get.

I too am waiting for a LX 4wd as, moon roof, towing, side air bags, etc . Ordered Halloween, Oct 31. Today marks 12 weeks. Living in Western NY and would like to use this suv in the snow. Looks like it will be Spring before delivery, if that.
Some time ago I read about Mazda giving some type of gift to those waiting a long time. Anyone know anything about this (what is a long time?)?
Hope good things happen to those who wait.

Has anyone leased a ES or LX Tribute who might care to share lease terms? My wife is enchanted with this SUV & I am jittery due to new vehicle status & recall rumblings - I thought a 3 year lease might be a clever way to get her what she wants without undue risk. On-line calculators tell me $3k cap reduction should get me a monthly lease charge of about $300 -does anyone have a real-world experience I could compare to the computer math? Many thanks... BTW - does anyone else out there suspect that the introduction of Toyota's (IMHO overpriced) "Highlander" plus a slowing economy may ease the Tribute supply crunch I keep reading about here?
  • john1726john1726 Member Posts: 37
The highlander is not going to ease the Tribute supply crunch too much, Toyota is not going to be producung too many highlanders this model year.
