I don't think it would be good for getting from Toronto to Tampa, 1500 miles. I'd have to stop every 200 miles to leave enough power to get to a charging station...if they are available. A two and a half day trip would become an 8 day trip!

My other problem is new technology anxiety. I'd rather wait and the technology will get better and the price will come down. I'll get stuck with a Betamax model, when new products are developed.

Sure, I could keep a gas/diesel car for long trips, but, if I have two cars I like them to be pretty much interchangeable....just in case....................

I came up with this "magic formula" for a successful EV: It's called "the 3-3-3 rule". What do you think?

It must cost $30,000 or less

It must have an actual range of 300 miles under any conditions

It must recharge in 3 hours or less

If people do their homework, they can get a better price. Sadly the people on this forum, we're not representative of the general public. For them, the Costco price is a great option.

Not if you live in super heat when the a/c is working hard plus using all the car's electronics, and what if you're in a traffic jam on the turnpike for an hour or more. For around town, probably fine, but I don't need to spend $130k to run errands. Nope, not for me.

Well, not everyone's time is worth that much. Plenty of people spend hours per day plopped on couch watching TV, so making $100 and getting some exercise is a big improvement!

@driver100 - I think you are the perfect candidate for a TESLA. You've been in the $60K - $70K (CDN) range the last 2 vehicles (535i & E400). You get rid of your vehicles once the manufacturer's warranty is up. I think TESLAs have an 8 year unlimited mile warranty. You can charge 80% of your battery in 30 - 40 minutes (depending on the weather as @Mr_Shiftright pointed out) & 100% of your battery in 75 minutes (according to TESLA's website. Every 3 hours or so you stop for a half hour, charge your TESLA up and get going. You and your wife aren't on any type of schedule. You travel along a MAJOR interstate that has lots of superchargers. It won't cost you a cent in gas the entire 1500 mile trip to Tampa. Once you are in FL, you don't do THAT much traveling (except to hang out with Mike). I'll bet by the time you are ready to dump your E400, the range will be greater. I'm not sure what the tax breaks are for you guys north of the border, but it might be worth looking into.

We had a 9-hour traffic stoppage on I70 at 4 am Sunday morning due to a possibly speeding trucker killing a highway construction worker. Saturday was a 2-3 hour stoppage and slowdown in the opposite directionfrom Sunday's for changing traffic from old lanes to new lanes adjacent to them.

If you're caught near the front of the stoppage, there's no escape to an exit or a center illegal crossover turnaround.

Come to think of it, if Chevy ever comes out with a "performance" Bolt/Volt (whatever they're calling it), I'd be interested in it. No more range anxiety.

Just saw a report today, this one from no less than BP, stating that supply of oil far outstrips demand worldwide. And, that demand isn't going to rebound, at least nowhere in any future they can see. That should give some impetus for a performance Volt/Bolt type vehicle, given the oil glut.

Which once again brings up another point....why in the world have oil prices risen 25% in the last several weeks?

Not sure how you define "successful". The company hasn't made a dime, has it? I was under the impression that it's still burning the IPO money and/or living off federal and state government largesse. Nevada just handed them a pile.

I don't follow Tesla discussions anywhere so I really know very little about them or the ownership experience. I look back on the discussions here and most of the time there is relatively little about powertrain issues - sometimes gripes about transmissions, sometimes about fuel economy, but really very little about that. Most of the time the things one hears about in places like this are things about comfort, room, NVH, infotainment, computer controls, component failure, and the dealer experience.

Given that Tesla has not really had much time to learn all about these sort of things I wonder how owners would respond to those kind of questions?

Range anxiety in a BEV is an archaic way of thinking. With a range of 250 miles a Tesla is unlikely to run out of juice. It is no different from using a smartphone. The phone is charged nightly while one is asleep.

If one uses the car for commuting to work, the car can be charged at work; if a charger is available, or overnight at home. For the occasional long distance trip, Boston to New York for example, the 200 mile distance is easily achieved on one charge. For longer distances, where the driver would be taking a break anyway, the car can be charged in as little as 45 minutes with a supercharger.

Only yesterday I was reading that by 2050 everything will be electrified. And the good part about this scenario is the power source will come from renewable energy such as solar, wind and hydro; and to meet peak demands, geothermal and hydrogen. Pie in the sky? not really--the savings from exploration, extracting, refining and distribution of oil and gas can be invested in building electric power plants.

The problem is who wants a 45 minutes charge versus a 5 minute 15 gallon fill-up? Why waste 40 additional minutes?

If you run out of power completely I wonder if there is enough juice to keep your electronics going and info saved?

I don't have the pioneering spirit...I don't want to be a leader of new devices at this time in my life...I'll go with the tried and true.

Hi all. Dad is in rehab now. He fell two days ago trying to get out of bed in the hospital. He broke 3 ribs. I guess when you think things are as bad as they can get, it gets worse.

I'm serious. Your Mercedes is going to be worth what, $40K when you are ready to trad it in? I'm not sure how these things are optioned, but you don't need the $130K P85D that my friend bought last Saturday. Say you option a Model S up to $100K. Your trade is worth $40K, so that's $60K you've got to come up with. You keep the car for 8 years instead of 3 or 4. There's nowhere near the maintenance, no gas to pay for. By the time you are ready to part ways with your Mercedes, the technology won't be new.

Mike, keep plugging. On the positive side, he is now in a place where they are equipped to deal with all his current issues. May end up being the segue into a care facility, because after all this, going back home with you trying to manage all the care may not even be an option.

It's worth considering in about 3 years....we'll see where the technology is by then. We have all seen technology turn on a dime......Tesla's could be like Betamax in 3 years, and gas engines could be dinosaurs.

NYC, we just had a chain of camera stores across Canada close, they had been in business since the 1930s - once had over 200 stores. They only had 59 stores left, and they could continue selling digital cameras for a few years, but, then people started taking photos with their phones. Telus bought the chain in 2009 so shows how astute they were.

All this is to say I'll wait and see, I don't want to be on the leading edge....of the wrong technology. Besides, I was born and bread on gasoline powered cars, it won't be easy for me to change.

We'll see where the world is at in 3 years.........

Mike...I reiterate what the others have stated. It's better for you, and certainly better for your Father if he stays in an elderly care facility/ Tough decision....one that we all have to make, and my son will have to make for me at some point. But, you're not trained to take care of him.

Sad to say this, but his health seems to be heading in the direction that the ONLY option is either assisted living or (as it sounds to me) a full time elderly care facility.

Been there before. Sounds all too familiar. This doesn't mean you love them less. It means you love them so much you realize you aren't the best care option for them.

Just going by money? Well, I'm not a business guy, but for 2014, they reported $3.2B income on which they made $880M gross profit. The bottom line was a loss of $294M. That doesn't sound too bad for me for such a young car company, especially one that just keeps changing and growing.

When I mentioned success, I was thinking more of sales. They just keep increasing. I believe the total number for last year was 30k Model S and they sold more than 10k in just the first quarter this year. Seems pretty strong for a full-size luxo car, regardless of drivetrain. Once the Model X and Model E come to fruition, I gotta think that bottom line is going to skyrocket.

Well nothing wrong with being an optimist but Tesla as made a profit only in one 3-month period since 2003. It not only lost $294 million in 2014 but another $217 million of its gross was money from selling ZEV credits, not from selling cars.

Tesla has almost 40 percent the capitalization of Ford through stock sales, but makes 200 times fewer cars. Almost 30 percent of Tesla shares have been sold short. Tesla's CEO promises a profit no sooner than 2020.

Success? Not hardly, unless you judge it by how well it pitches its stock.

What's that old joke? "How can you sell your product at a loss and make money?" Answer: "Volume!"

I mean, I wish them well and I love the car, but I wouldn't put a dime on it.

Here's one - curious if anyone has an opinion on this.

Leased an Infiniti QX60 a few weeks ago. Live in NY, went to a dealer in NJ to take advantage of Multiple Security Deposits (MSD's). Everything went perfectly, dealer even brought the car to my house. I gave a check for the MSD, and paid for the inceptions (1st month, dmv, doc) via credit card.

Anyways, the dealer called me this week and told me that Infiniti won't "buy" the lease, since they won't allow NY residents to put down MSD's. They're telling me they're willing to give me the MSD $ back, but I'll need to pay the full boat on the monthly payment.

From a legal perspective, I think I have a signed contract, with both the dealer and Infiniti/Infiniti Financial. A lawyer told me this is a business issue between Infiniti and the dealer. I told the dealer that I may not have purchased the same car from them if not for the MSD's, let alone purchased it from them, and that i wasn't inclined to just pick up the monthly payment. I can't imagine they really want the truck back with a few hundred miles on it.

Any thoughts here?

Pretty much nothing is set in stone until the bank accepts the contract. Since the car is titled in New York and the state does not allow MSD's, Infiniti won't sign the contract. Looks like the dealer will have to unwind the deal.

But from what I can gather via some of the other Edmunds messageboards, BMW and others allow this, even for NY residents. I'd think NY's max security deposit would apply to cars SOLD in NY State, right? If an NJ Dealer can collect it, should NY's rule matter, even if the car is registered/titled here?

Interesting post. I always thought you could do MSD in CT or NJ if you are a NY resident because the NY dealer can't take MSD for some reason. What is the difference between the effective monthly payment and the "new" monthly payment that they want you to make now that the bank will not accept your MSD.

The deal was based on you getting the QX60 for that payment including the MSD. They should just take your car back and unwind the deal. Make sure you get every single dime you paid them back, including their ridiculous "doc fee" which is capped at $75 in New York. Good luck & tell us what happens.

Yes, NY State has a limit of $750 on security deposits. From other forums, it seems that BMW and Mercedes drivers go to NJ and CT in droves to do this.

Infiniti's program is more lucrative than the others. Each MSD lowers the money factor by .0001, and they payment dropped from $599 to $514. So it's $85/month, which is fairly material. Infiniti tells dealers it won't "buy" the lease if it has a security deposit > $749 and is originated in NY or has a NY lessee. Since BMW/Mercedes allow it, I'm thinking it's their own limitation, as opposed to a legality thing. Pretty sure it has nothing to do with the savings amount.

I did incur a painful $300 doc fee in NJ plus a higher DMV, since they gave me temporary NJ plates. But it was worth it to save $85/month for 39 months.

I told the dealer to come back with something other than me just getting my security deposit back and adding $85 to my monthly payment. Would the dealer really want this car back, with me having driven it for a few hundred miles? How's that in anyone's best interests?

g8, I can't help you at all, being a Canadian, but it is all very interesting. It seems to me Infinity Corp sets the rules, the dealer broke the rule, you should be covered...it is up to the dealer to fix it with Corporate. Of course they will try to get their money back, make you feel guilty, but just keep driving until they haul you in......

I once leased a 1964 Camaro. Near the end of the lease the manager called me in for a meeting. Apparently a new girl calculated the leases incorrectly and they wanted me to pay an additional $2000, because I was a nice honest person, and they had made an error. I thought if the error was in their favor I wouldn't have been called in to give me a refund, so I said "Sorry, I'd rather not pay the additional $2000".

Mike, something was going to happen at some point...you couldn't go on the way you were forever. You may have to reassess the situation and come up with a new plan. Hope you come up with the best possible plan possible. Few people would choose a nursing home or extra care facility, but, sometimes it is the only solution.

Sorry Mike.

Last summer after several falls it became apparant that we had to move my MIL into Assisted Living.

This really took a toll on us especially my wife. Getting her house ready to put on the market, selling and moving a 65 year collection of "stuff" including a packed garage etc.

She seems to have settled in now and she has made some new friends. Still, she sometimes fails to use her walker and she stuffs her medic alert into her purse instead of around her neck and she is very forgetful.

We just cringe now when the phone rings.

Sad to watch the decline of someone do dear to you.

We are here for you, Mike!

I read some reviews of the 2015 Mitsu Outlander (that reminds me, where's oldfarmer?), and the reviews are pretty solid. It's nice looking and has all the extra's, and seems to come in at a reasonable price.

They even offer an 10 year 100k mile warranty. Edmunds gives it 4 1/2 stars out of 5. If I was looking for an SUV in that price range I would give it a test drive. My only real drawbacks are whether I could find a dealer if I needed service, and what the depreciation would be.

interesting thing happened today. my daughter's friend left his car out front when they went to the beach (ratty old Camry that needed to be jumped at the end of the day). I mentioned he should buy the Volvo instead (just kidding!), and turns out that he was getting a new (or at least newer) car tomorrow. A Mitsu Lancer.

Now that is a coincidence...out of all the cars to buy - a Mitsu.

I had no idea Volvo sales had sunk to that level, though I knew they were down. Any idea what their sales volume was in their prime?
