Mike - sorry for your loss.

As for moving on, all you have to do is move to The Villages. Google "sex at the villages"....with an MB, the ladies will be all over you.

Yesterday I was out on sales calls and was coming up to a red light in the right lane. A Prius in the next lane decided to pull out. I hit the brakes and dove for the curb. I wound up blowing the tire and damaging the rim on the Explorer. She pulled over and thanked me for going for the curb and not slamming into the passenger side of her car where her 3 YO son was sitting. She offered to pay for the tire and rim repair. We exchanged papers and I now have to run around to get it all fixed.

When she was thanking me she said luckily it's only about $60 for a tire. I replied that the tire is probably closer to $200 and the rim would be close to $500 if it was bent. She was a bit taken aback but we'll see what happens.

My two older brothers both had British sports cars when I was a kid. Oldest had a pair of MGAs at different times (how he wishes he had one now given their current prices!) and my other brother had a non-Bugeye Sprite, the early-'60s version that looked like an early MG Midget.

The "side curtains" I recall were aluminum frames with fore/aft plastic sliding windows. They were held to the top of the door with a large thumbscrew IIRC.

That's when cars didn't have great suspensions, or sound deadening materials, or synchronized gear shift, or great shocks, or good steering....but, that is when...........
cars were cars!

I would take the tarted up version. Electric fuel pump, larger engine, deluxe wood steering wheel, electronic ignition and lifetime air filters, new top, new tonneau, new side curtain, slick pouches for both top and side curtains.

I like having all the comforts.

That guy has the best job in the world....restoring Bugeye Sprites!

Thanks for reminding me ab. That sounds right.....flimsy metal frames with plastic that you slide back, and that you bolt on when you need windows. Not so much fun in the winter.

Seeing those MGs and Sprites reminded me of owning a '69 MGB GT. Only had about 70K miles on it when I bought it in the mid-80s. I think the explanation for the super low mileage was because of the effort and expense you had to expend to keep it on the road.

I was the 3rd owner. Looked great. Surprisingly, no rust. Just a real pain to keep running. It took all of my extra cash and time to have it as a daily driver (which it was, for me).

Never took pictures of it. Wished I had, given it was a beautiful looking car.

My introduction to rudimentary auto mechanics came as lessons taught to me by that car.

Only had it a year, and drove it through a relatively harsh mid-west winter.

Found a note on it at a local mall where I was shopping asking if I was interested in selling to call the number on the note. I couldn't get home soon enough to make that call.

IIRC, I think I sold it for what I paid for it.

My father passed in October and one bit of unfinished business is the restoration of a 1973 karmann ghia convertible. Most of the work is done, but my step mother has a lot of other things on her plate so my wife and I are wrapping it up.

The shop my dad chose is a 1 man operation. Great quality, but very slow. Basically the pan, brakes, suspension, engine and transmission are done. Original pan was more rust than steel. Tom cut all the rust away, fully replaced both the driver and passenger pans and coated it all with a paint that is used for commercial truck chassis. It should never rust again. We have to install a new wiring harness, seats and carpet.

Body is pretty good, top is newer, but does have a leak. Will address that with a specialist once it is driving again.

Looking at a "retrosound" head unit to replace the very old and tired Sony in there now. Next question is adding an oil pressure gauge. I don't want to cut the dash, so trying to find something that fits the stock holes.

Likely keep for a year or so for all us kids to enjoy, then sell it and give proceeds to step mom. Her daily driver is an Xterra that she loathes, so together she can get the sedan she would prefer.

Had to take my E400 into service this morning. Luckily, they have service 7 days a week which makes it very convenient if something needs to be attended to over the weekend.

What happened was I got into my car yesterday morning to do some shopping. As I went over a bump, I noticed a terrible rattle in the right front door or somewhere in the right front of the car. The service writer drove with me and heard the rattling noise but it could be either in the right front dash near the glove box or in the right door panel. It's my guess that it's in the door panel - something must have come loose and is causing the rattle in the door. The rattling sound is like a deep base sounding vibration.

So they took my car and gave me a 2015 GLK 350 loaner. Driver, you are correct - it is a great car for the money. It isn't loaded, just the usual stuff - no NAV, but it has lane tracking and blind spot monitors which relieved me since this is an SUV with limited visibility to the rear. Runs smooth and is "rattle" free.

They said it could be several days until they found the source of the rattle and repaired it. I'm in no hurry - they can keep it as long as they wish so long as they don't wash it through the automatic wash rack where they've damaged my right front and rear wheels due to the low profile tires and the width of the wheel itself. I know the GM is in no mood to replace my wheels again so I asked them to please park it in a safe place and make sure no one washes it unless they do it by hand.

Not even a Mercedes E 400 $72,000 car is trouble free - I am the first to acknowledge the shortcomings of any car, whether it's Cadillac, BMW or Mercedes or any other luxury brand. But the manner in which I was treated makes all the difference. If Cadillac had handled GG's Cadillac in the same manner, he would not be in the tenuous position he is now in.

Well fine then...don't tart up an original Sprite--just buy a Miata, and you get all the comforts plus a car that would slap a little Sprite silly in any category. I don't mind the hidden mechanical improvements, so I'm with you there--but all that foo-foo bolted on, it's just blasphemous.

What's next? Mink upholstery?

Depends on which one you buy. Jaguars? A devil to restore! MGB? Easy as pie--you can get any part you need delivered next day UPS--even an entire new body!

I'd say the MGB, the VW bug and the Model A Ford are the three easiest "classic" cars to restore and maintain, with the early Mustangs a close #4.

I love Karman Ghias and thought about getting one (there's an EV one here that's been for sale for a year).

A Miata would be a better runner and somewhat safer but a VW sure would be fun.

I think an oil temperature gauge would be more useful on a Karmann Ghia. By the time a pressure gauge warned you of anything on a VW engine it would be far too late, but a temp gauge could be monitored for gradual increases in temperature before it hit the danger level. And that's right, never cut the dash. You can also hang gauges under the dash--no harm done.

A rattle is very annoying and my fear is that they are hard to find. The service department being open on Sundays is a nice bonus, and the service guy went for a drive with you to find the problem. No product is infallible, so if they can find the problem and fix it then they are doing all they can possibly do. Not to mention, giving you a GLK as a loaner.....poor GG wasn't even offered a Smart Car.

The fully loaded GLK was about $20k less than the E400, yet it has almost all the same equipment, including the same engine. I really like the GLK, and it is so solid....but, there is something about the E400 that makes it more comfortable.....more room and smoother ride (with really nice handling), and the controls are easier to use.

My wife misses the A4 because it was smaller and more manouevreable.....steering was perfect and it was fun to drive esp with the manual transmission. But, she likes the GLK and feels safer in it.......it is a lot more solid and feels heavier than the A4. So far, we have been pleased.

I said I would consider another Audi, but only an automatic and with a warranty....if there wasn't anything else that she liked.

Exactly right. None are perfect. They all put their wheels on one lug nut at a time.

And it's up to the dealer to make experiences better than they might end up.

actually, at the factory, I think they put all the lug nuts on at the same time. Quicker that way!

I just hope our new VW is a good one. Even though under warranty, I don't want to deal with any problems. For 3 years, and probably 20-25K miles, it is a reasonable bet to have nothing major.

To be fair, according to GG's May 15 post he was given a loaner; not sure what model or brand it was though.

My CC was problem free sans a defective Xenon bulb that was replaced under warranty. I really do think VW has turned a corner...you know...until the warranty is up.

A guy called about the warranty on my Mustang that's about to expire. I said it's a good car and no further warranty is needed...however I have a Silverado with 219,000 miles and I would like to warranty the entire 4WD system which currently works fine. He hung up. Aha. Now I know how to make them stop calling.

Hope it all works out robr2. I hope her 3 yo son was in the back seat and not the front. Either way wheels and tires are replaceable, people aren't. Good for you doing the right thing and good luck getting it all worked out.

We have neighbors that have had VWs...one with 2 Jettas and another with a Jetta Wagon and a Golf GTI and they have had no problems....and there cars are over 100k miles.

Our Audi would have been the perfect car for my wife...if Audi stood behind their warranty.. Like I say, if they made a car that suited me or my wife the best, I would chance another one....but, it would have to be an automatic and I would only keep it while under warranty. So far I am impressed with my treatment from Mercedes, and that really builds confidence in the product.

Off subject for an observation I would like to share with you:

This time of the year, all you see on TV for the most part (broadcast as well as cable/satellite feeds) are reruns of series (sit-coms, dramas, reality, etc.), movies and the like. I mean, come on, how many times can you televise "Battleship", "Pearl Harbor", "Men in Black I, II, and III", "Shooter", "Batman: The Beginning", "Star Troopers I and II", "The Amazing Spider-Man I and II", Spider-Man I, II, and III", "Saving Private Ryan", to name a few. I've seen these enough that I know the exact words the actors are going to say in each scene. That's bad - real bad!

The only "new stuff" on TV is professional sports (baseball, golf, etc.), and a few 10-week episodes of action and drama series on TBS, USA, TNT, and the like.

I wanted to mention news and commentary as being new, but those are also reruns. For example, how many times is ISIS, Hillary Clinton, Republican Presidential Candidates, the Congress, etc., mentioned every night?

Even the commercials and Ads are all reruns. Absolutely nothing new in those either.

Maybe the summer doldrums came early this year. Kind of like "cabin fever" in the winter - it's too darn hot right now to go out. So we habitate indoors in the air conditioned rooms of our abodes - no difference during winter up north - but we call this "Condo Fever!"

Not gibberish at all Mike, I find TV very banal these days. Nothing inspiring on, "reality" tv is such a joke, sports now and then are fine but I tire of TV easily.

We only had 3, maybe 4 channels on a good day, growing up and somehow we survived.

Get Netflix and/or Amazon Prime, Mike. Two first seasons of House of Cards (third was a dud), Orange is the New Black are absolute riot, as lomg as you like this kind of television. The movies, not so much, too ols, newer ones are low end, but their original TV productions are making it worth those 10+ bucks per month or so. I also find some interesting documentary productions, history, social, sports, or nature. I also have Amazon Prime, they got couple of seasons of the HBO productions (Boardwalk Empire) in the subscription price (unfortunately too many are still paid extra). This could straddle you to the new TV seasons. The quality is getting good enough to gather Emmy nominations, I even remenber you complained once that you didn't know any shows from last year ceremony.

BTW, my late condolences to you. From what you wrote, you were a good son. I'm sure he knew, even if he wouldn't say it at times.

I get those all the time in the mail for my wife's PT but never the Eclipse which by all accounts is a better built car. Her Chrysler seems to fall apart bit by bit. For example, the plastic panel holding the driver's seat control decided to just break off the other day. Just a piece of soft plastic with a few clips. Could have glued it back on but went for a new one. $136! For a little piece of plastic! After 6 years it only has 29k miles but I wonder if it will last.

Speaking of your Mustang, I was wondering if you could post a picture showing the striping you put on it? I was looking at a new one in white and I thought that color looked good but needed a little "something".

Don't know what type of TV system you have but there are a number of summer only shows that the wife and I watch:

halt and catch fire on AMC is about the early computer days in the 1980's - decently accurate. Season 1 should be available on demand; season two is airing new episodes now.

Tyrant on FX is about a fictional Middle East country where one of the sons of the ruling family escaped to America for 20 years then returned for a family members wedding and chaos ensues.

Just a a couple of suggestions for you. You may like them, you may not.

My son moved into his new apartment and only wanted internet with a good speed. He does not have cable TV. He had cable TV with lots of channels as part of the cable/internet in his apartment at The Ohio State University where the landlord had all apartments wired and turned on and ready to go when students moved in on Aug 15. But son didn't watch cable much at all.

Now He does have Netflix, which he discontinued but has a trial again now, and some TV access on internet . The younger generation (relative to me at least) has cut the cord (cable). He does have a TV with OTA digital channels on rabbit ears, but I'm not sure he's used it since we added in at move in Apr. 1.

I watch Fox, National Geographic, History Channel, and the two shopping channels when they are pimping technology items. There's nothing else I need out of the 100 or so channels.

My wife and I are similar. We've cut our cable package down to just basic channels and 150 Mbps Internet. The internet speed is primarily for my job which requires heavy bandwidth when I work remotely. We watch Netflix, Hulu and HBO GO.

I only keep the the basic cable package so I can watch the network shows on demand and watch the news on my way out in the morning.

I was was tired of paying Comcast $180 for service we barely used. Now we pay $59.99 plus tax for cable/internet and an additional $20 a month for Netflix and Hulu.

I'm keeping up with True Detective, Baller, and The Brink on HBO and of course John Oliver. As for other channels, nothing is must see in the summer. I'm spend most of my time on Velocity.

Yesterday I was out on sales calls and was coming up to a red light in the right lane. A Prius in the next lane decided to pull out. I hit the brakes and dove for the curb. I wound up blowing the tire and damaging the rim on the Explorer. She pulled over and thanked me for going for the curb and not slamming into the passenger side of her car where her 3 YO son was sitting. She offered to pay for the tire and rim repair. We exchanged papers and I now have to run around to get it all fixed.

When she was thanking me she said luckily it's only about $60 for a tire. I replied that the tire is probably closer to $200 and the rim would be close to $500 if it was bent. She was a bit taken aback but we'll see what happens.
Hope it all works out robr2. I hope her 3 yo son was in the back seat and not the front. Either way wheels and tires are replaceable, people aren't. Good for you doing the right thing and good luck getting it all worked out.

I kid of left series TV years ago. Just lost interest. I watch a load of baseball and football in season and Jeopardy but that's mostly it. I did have Amazon Prime and toy with going back to Netflix which is a different thing than when I left it.

I wonder how I'd be going all Internet. Would have to subscribe to MLB and NFL.

Women's World Cup 2015 final: USA beat Japan 5-2

I don't watch a lot of soccer, but the U.S. Women's team were the underdogs and they played an amazing game. They scored 4 incredible goals in the first 16 minutes of play. Karli Lloyd had 3 goals, and the game was played in Vancouver Canada.

Well done.

A rattle is very annoying and my fear is that they are hard to find. The service department being open on Sundays is a nice bonus, and the service guy went for a drive with you to find the problem. To be fair, according to GG's May 15 post he was given a loaner; not sure what model or brand it was though.

I was offered a loaner. But, if after a couple of days of trying to diagnose the cause of the power steering going out and stalling problems, they would take the loaner back. So, I was going on a business trip. And they weren't willing to offer a loaner for the time it would take to diagnose and fix the problems. They said that's all Cadillac would pay them to do.

Unacceptable to me.

Now, we're knee deep in a lemon law suit. All sorts of failures on Cadillac's and two dealers who were involved.

Thanks for the info Dino. This was only the 3rd or 4th soccer game I have watched but what a great sport. So much skill....and the players go all out to make a play. That 3rd goal was incredible.

Question for the experts (that's all of you): We are going on a road trip in a few weeks, taking the Pilot of course. Oil & Filter change is due (MM says it is at 20% right now), so obviously I'm going to do that along with a tire rotation. I last had the brake fluid, transmission fluid, transfer case fluid done 2 years ago at 37,289 miles, should I have any of that done again before my trip? Right now we have about 64K miles. I'm thinking I should have the coolant changed as well, since I've never had that done (4 years).

Depends on where and how far away is your trip but it seems like you are good to go; still, I would give the tires (at 64k miles) some close scrutiny especially driving on wet hydroplane prone roads.
