had a text from my SIL tonight. Nephew (17) passed his driver's test on the 3rd try. Up on long Island. I don't even want to drive around in Nassau county it is so terrible.

so she was asking what we did about putting kids on insurance. Been a while, but we just did the normal. Gag on the price, shop around, and do it. though somehow, we managed to work it out to not cost very much.

seems though that her semi-ex (still married) isn't interested in putting him on. so it will be interesting to see how that works out, because I can't believe they are willing to fly blind to save a few bucks.

of course, even worse because I don't think you want to be anywhere near him driving at this point!

@oldfarmer50, the forcing emotorcon has been reported, no eta.

@thebean - we used to have an active discussion about waxing that specifically said "no Zaino posts". Interesting that they now have a one shot product instead of the 5 bottles that you used over two days (or whatever it was).

Zaino All-in-One.  Easy and good shine.  Thumbs up from me.

I've used Zaino a long time. So has JMonroe. Always wanted to try Collinite. Maybe time to do that as Zaino is time comsuming.

@snakeweasel - can you take a ride over to this place and check out the car? I'd greatly appreciated.

Was talking with my mom yesterday and she told me about a recent phone call she got.

Apparently, she had won $5M in some sort of lottery, but it would take $1000 for her to collect the winnings.

My mom, who turned 78 last month, hung up on the caller.

Collinite has been on my list for a long time. Guess it's kind of seen its day though.

You're probably right. I've been using Collinite 845 for years and have been very satisfied with it. Can you imagine what the new stuff could do for one of 'farmers' hoopties? He might never get rid of it. B)

Maybe you might want to go halfzees with me on the new stuff. :o

    jmonroe

I almost bought into the snob appeal of that first product until they went on about how the case it came it was craft by hand from a virgin aluminum billet. My hoopties would die of shame

The only car I regularly wash is the Ford and I just use Turtle Wash & Wax. Probably doesn't last long but it shines like the best wax I ever used.

Oh the system is glitching again. Forcing emotorcon into the text. Can't get rid of them.
Over the years I have used many wax products and I'm sure everyone in here has also.

So of course I used Turtle wax and my last wax before going to Collinite 845 was Meguiar's. Both of those probably shined pretty close to what I get from Collinite but they didn't last nearly as long. With Collinite, the car still beads water even after going through a winter. Don't get me wrong the beading isn't as good as what it was after a few months but it definitely still beads which the other products didn't do.

I'm sure there are better products out there but I can't spend the time trying to find them and the price of Collinite is just a tad more, and in some cases a little less, than the well known products so I'm staying with it.

The way I look at it is if I'm going to spend the time to wax my cars, I want it to last and I'm not going through multiple steps to do it nor am I going to spend big bucks for the product either.

The last time I bought the Collinite, I walked up to the wax aisle at the auto parts store and quickly grabbed a bottle of Collinite and started to walk away. There was a guy there perusing all of the products and he said, "damn, that didn't take you long to find what you wanted. I guess you've used that stuff before, huh"? I told him that I thought that a lot of the other products seem to invest more in the packaging than what is in the box. Collinite is in a plain brown wrapper so to speak and is, therefore, probably past over by many shoppers. When I left, this guy was still perusing and seemed to be just as confused as he was when I first saw him.:worried::

It kind of depends on whether you even bother (mostly I don't) or whether you treat it like a hobby and love the shine. And on how big your car is. ;)

Claying can be kind of fun too.

The only wax I've actually never liked is Meguirs "Tech Wax". Instructions say to do whole car and then buff off. It's takes forever to haze up.

I used an Armor All product "butter wax" or something to touch up the hood and trunk of the 04 and it had no hazing time. Worked pretty good, I have a few bottles from those Christmas gift sets.

I usually use Gold Class or Mothers Carnuba.

Very nice! I also like the fact that you have a side entry garage which looks better than having it up front. Our house almost qualifies as a snout house. With it being a fairly large ranch style house, the garage is maybe a 1/4 width of the front of the house, but it does protrude out.

A snout house is a house with a protruding garage that takes up most of the street frontage. This layout is worked into many styles of houses, including single-family houses, duplexes and other multifamily structures.

On car wax, I definitely am against any wax that sells for more than I paid for a car at any point. That would put a lid at $600. I reality my ceiling is way lower than that!

The $600 car is a cute story. Bought a 56 Buick Special in maybe 1975 for $600 just as a toy to play around with. Served me well and I took it on more than one pretty distant trip. Not a bit of trouble. When I decided it was time to seel my brother bought it for $600. When he went back to law school my dad bought it from him for $600. Dad sold it to some guy once he wasn't having fun with it. $600.

If I could find it I'd gladly pay $600 t get it back....

My first car was a 1970 Dodge Coronet that I bought in late 1978 for around $700. The winter of 79 saw it parked in a snow drift for a few weeks (the car was parked and the snow drifted on it burying it), was a heck of a time digging that beast out. Had it when I went into the service and it saw many a trip between just east of Cleveland, OH to just northwest of Chicago, IL.

The only bad reviews were on glassdoor, a site for employees who don't like their workplace....sounds like it isn't a great place to work, unless you are a family member. If you have a Sears random orbit buffer or anything similar to it you just buy terry cloth pads or micro fiber pads and use them over the foam pad that is on the buffer. I use one pad to apply the wax/cleaner and several to remove it. When the removal pad starts to load up, it's time to change it. I have at least a dozen pads so I know I'll never run out doing a car. When you're done, just put them in the washing machine using hot water. I've been doing this for years and have worn out many pads but they are fairly cheap so get a multi-pack if you can.

After you use the buffer a few times you'll get the technique down and you'll never go back to using your arms again.

FWIW, I bought both of my sons the Harbor Freight version of what I have and it does the job just as well.

@nelsonf - as with anything you can either build up your collection over time or go completely hog wild and easily drop $1K and make your garage the satellite office for Griot's;)

The boar's hair brush & wheel cleaner work fantastic. Spray on, let it sit for a minute, clean with the brush, rinse off. It is easy to use and gets the wheels very clean and shiny.

The heavy duty wheel cleaner works a bit different. Let's say you own a German Automobile (I did a few times) and the wheels are so dirty that they look like they are powder coated black. Spray the wheel with water, Spray HD Wheel Cleaner, let it sit for 1 minute or so, scrub with boars hair brush, rinse, admire sparkling wheels.

Machine Polish 3 does a fantastic job at filling in fine scratches in your clear coat. If someone scrapes your car lightly, Machine polish 3 will take them out.

Best in show Wax goes on smooth, comes off easily, and makes your paint shine deeply.

Speed Shine is a quick detailer. Works well inbetween washes.

Spray on wax keeps the car shining in between waxings. Spray it on after you way the car, wipe off as you are drying.

I have the 6" random orbital. It gets astonishing results. Saves you time. I've poilshed and waxed a Black Chevy Tahoe in under 2 hours.

Any other questions, let me know.

So far, I have Griot's rubber cleaner, interior cleaner, clay bar and car wash. I'm still finishing up some maguire's wax, then I'll try the Best in Show.

I have a Porter-Cable 7424 buffer. Keeps me from getting trouble.

Thanks for the info, coincidentally, the new Griot's mailer came today. Fun to look through.

@Mr_Shiftright - thank-you for your help. My friend decided to go in a different direction.

@snakeweasel - Thank-you for offering to go look at that car for me. It will not be necessary.

I just smear on a little Nu-Finish and wipe it off. Takes 15 minutes. Looks great.

My 1973 Bavaria is still going strong. The current owner tipped me off that it is the lead picture in the Petrolicious article on The Vintage.

I love that car.....wish they made them look like that today. Timeless....perfect!

As for waxing....I took the car to dealership for a free wash....anytime any day.
    They did a nice job.
An hour later I drove through a construction zone...lots of wet muddy dirt on the road.
I drove extra slow so it wouldn't splash too much (but it did along the bottom)
But, at the end of the muddy patch there was a cop with a radar gun.
I think the muddy road saved me about a $200 fine!

About a week before we moved to Europe, mom had friend that had a silver with black interior '73 Bavaria automatic with a/c. I had just gotten my driver's license in New Orleans at age 15 about two weeks prior (5/74) and mom's friend offered to let me drive it. I politely declined so instead she took mom and me out for a quick, spirited drive. I loved how the car sounded, so different from the '72 Cutlass Supreme mom drove. It felt so much tighter and alive! We had these cars in France, a '71 Audi 100 LS and dad had a '75 Renault 16 TL and a '75 Renault 30 with the PRV-V6. The Renaults were company cars. I think I've shared this picture before of the Audi. They didn't even come close to measuring up to the Bavaria.

fintail--don't you think the profile of the Audi mimics that of the same period MB? Coincidence?? ;)

I forgot to mention an important tool when you are waxing the sides of your car. As I've gotten older I've gotten even lazier than before.

I wouldn't even think of doing a wax job without this:

I got one of these about 3 years ago and I'm still patting myself on the back for buying it. :D

I'll have to look at that. My wife stole my nice hydraulic seat for her own workbench, so I made a quick and dirty stool to replace it. But I love casters and pneumatics. Heading out to HF with a friend this afternoon in fact, but I left all my 20% off coupons in the van. Guess I can print some off - yep, got one. $20.

Do they make it in 4 wheel drive? I have a gravel driveway.

I always carry a few 20% off coupons in my wallet just so I don't have the problem that you are now facing and I have at least 4 or 5 in each car.

The only down side of this seat is due to my laziness...as I scoot around the car, if I'm not careful, the extension cord gets in the way of the casters and if I'm scooting too fast I almost fall off when the thing comes to a sudden halt.

I guess you can say I have too much horsepower for this thing. :o

I would say that having to go to the ER room after falling off a 15" stool would be quite embarrassing.

I could use one of those. Much comfier looking than my little plastic step stool.
