I could be thinking about the stripper coupe which didn't even have a back seat standard. That was about $9,995. I don't think the sedan was much more. (Just checked, MSRP started at $10,775)

Still, I see a lot of more upscale cars with similar milage for less.

It seems the lieup on Sirius is different than XM. Last year I think they used 17 Love Channel for Christmas. That seems to have faded but I can get softer popular songs on The Bridge (32) and The Blend (16) but, I think my 6 months free on the new E400 came and went at the beginning of October. I am not at home to renew, and I don't think I signed anything when I picked up the car. I wonder if they will find me in Florida. They may not have my Florida information....or my email address. There is no way I would subscribe if I only use it for 7 months of the year while back home. I got about 12 hours of play on a USB stick, and that works out fine, plus Tampa has WDUV the DUV, similar to Mikes mostly music, limited commercials, FM station.

Channel 70 on Sirius is LOVE. LOVE used to be on Channel 17, but they moved it to 70 a while ago.

I'll tell ya what ruined Christmas.

It's all the lights at the Mall.

Used to be, growing up in NYC, December was a grim, dirty, dark, dreary place.

But then, suddenly....LIGHTS! Everywhere! It was magic. The city was transformed.

Now? Everyday is Christmas.

I guess if you are like 2 to 7 years old, it's still pretty exciting.

There tends to be a base price for a car that is clean and runs well....and that would be around the $5000 mark. If that is what you want to spend then that car is probably as good as you can find. In my opinion, we traded in a 2013 Passat with 14000 miles on it and got $11000. If it was me, I would have tried to come up with the extra $6000, because you are getting a better car, a newer car, and a car that would have about 5 years less miles on it........you would be getting a lot more and better car, for $6000 more.

In retrospect I should have scooped that car up from you back then. What was it, 3 years old when you traded it in? The dealer stole it.

Stoves and toasters, yes (anything with heating elements like irons); refrigerators & can openers, not so much. All the electronic charging equipment in the world can be run at once on a dirt-simple cord, well, nearly.

Read the manual or nameplate, toasters can fool you. Unless you have an industrial can opener a light weight cord will do.

It was like new. Similar ones were selling at retail for $14 or $15k. By the time they are discounted and warrantied not a huge profit for the dealer...$1 or $2k possibly $3k. I would have loved to sell it to someone who would have appreciated it. But then, you would have to come to Florida to pick it up....and stay over! On second thought, maybe this worked out for the better..........

I didn't really think about that, but makes sense. Room heater for sure then. We have a nice one that we don't use too often in Florida, but, we have it just in case.

I'd say most people who are buying a $5,000 car are pretty much at their limit. They might be able to eek out another $400 or $500 but no way would they be able to come up with ANOTHER 6 grand. That would make the car more than twice the 5 grand they initially budgeted.

Good point. What I was saying though, was, if there is any way possible to come up with $6000 more, you are getting a better car that has about 5 years more life in it than the $5000 car. 76k miles less 14k miles = 60000 miles. The cost per year for ownership will probably be a lot less with the Passat!

Driver, key point there. It can be cheaper long term to get one good car to have for a long period, instead of going through multiple cheap ones that don't last. Only problem is, you have to be able to ante up to get into the first one.

Stick, that is one of the big lessons I learned in life. Often, it is better to pay more the first time around. You get better quality and it will probably cost less in the long run. Chances are you will like it better and not want to get rid of it as fast. If it is something like shoes, they may even save you from expensive surgery or medical problems.

I understand, you can't pay $11000 for a car if you can only get your hands on $5000, but, if there is a way to do it I think it will all work out for the better.

There is a huge demand for toilets....what with all the hurricanes. Most models are out of stock. As we found out car rental prices have doubled in some places this year. Not sure why there are deals on cars....it ended up being a good year because of the hurricanes and floods. I think any car company with surplus stock wants to make sure they can unload some of their inventory now....get the cash in hand while you can. Also boost your sales so the stock holders are happy....it is coming up to bonus time.

There were a lot of cars and other vehicles with Ontario plates, along with Michigan, traveling south on November 1 along with us in the rain showers and drizzle through Cincinnati and Kentucky on Wednesday. I remembered that a lot of Florida rentals started on November 1 and that's why people migrate in groups. Hoping for lighter traffic when we migrate back north this weekend.

There were a lot of cars along the roadside of I75 with car trouble, more than usual. Maybe the rain?

None had flat tires. That had been mentioned in this topic IIRC.

Only flats I've seen in the last few months were cars with the very low profile tires, some OEM equipment.

The yearly migration has started. It is actually a little quiet in Florida now....expect it to get 25 to 50% busier by mid November. Probably lots of RVs and campers these days. I am glad we flew down, but, I miss the E!

My Lincoln was a success under that formula--40k miles of use for a $2,200 net.

There are many very good cars that are inexpensive. Some Kias, Hyundais, Hondas, Toyotas. These always hold their value very well. P.U. trucks as well.

Can't beat $11k for a new car. Are those Sparks any good? Can't imagine an Edmunds enthusiast would be satisfied with one. For $11,000 I'd probably prefer driver's VW.

Actually, it's not that bad of a car. 98HP, pretty decent infotainment features.

Not something I'd want to drive on a road trip, but for around town use, I think it would be fine.

Peter Thiel isn’t so sure self-driving tech is a good investment

Billionaire investor Peter Thiel doesn’t like investing in trends, he’s fond of saying. It’s a mantra he repeated this week at the Future Investment Initiative, an investment forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he took the stage with journalist Maria Bartiromo.

Asked about where he’s investing, he noted that he’s looking outside of Silicon Valley largely, but he suggested he doesn’t put much stock in “buzzwords” like SaaS software or virtual computing or augmented reality or artificial intelligence. “Even though these trends may or may not happen, as investments, they’re dangerous,” he said. In fact, “when you hear buzzwords, you should run away as fast as you can.” Otherwise, you’re left dealing with “many companies of that kind, and many competitors.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Thiel feels the same way about self-driving technologies — even while his venture firm, Founders Fund, is an investor in the ride-sharing company Lyft, whose future would seem to depend on its ability to become a self-driving company at some point.

Sergio's warning about self-driving cars: Don't believe the fluff

As investors push auto stocks higher believing autonomous drive technology will ultimately deliver a huge payoff, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne is here to throw some cold water on that optimism.

"Don't believe the fluff," Marchionne told analysts when asked about self-driving cars. "I don't want to start chasing rainbows here, because if you chase rainbows you are going to fall off the cliff."

Marchionne's point: It will be a while before we see widespread use of autonomous drive vehicles and it is still too early to know which companies will succeed and which ones will fail with self-driving cars.

Can and Driver said they were the best car you could buy for around $15K. At $11K and change, it has to be a steal.

Add 17 more Benjamins, and you can get this, luxurious by comparison, which doesn’t look too shabby, either....

Edmunds gives the Spark 4 1/2 stars! Not for me, I would rather have my old Passat too, but;

pros
Impressive number of features at an affordable price
can be had with optional high-tech safety features that are typically unavailable in this class
high fuel economy
easy to park in tight spaces.

cons
Acceleration is very slow, both for the class and in general
not much rear legroom and cargo capacity.

oldfarmer...if you could get 110000 miles out of it it will qualify under your $1000 per 10k mile rule.
btw...love that 6 cylinder toilet seat car. That would solve the problem of actually getting out of the car at the drive thru food joint.

There is a case where you get a lot more car for $1700 more. Edmunds only gives the Sonic 2 stars so that might make the Spark the better car. Personally, I'd rather get a one or two year old Cruze than anything that flimsy. I like metal around me, the more and the thicker the gauge the better.

Stick, that is one of the big lessons I learned in life. Often, it is better to pay more the first time around. You get better quality and it will probably cost less in the long run. There are many very good cars that are inexpensive. Some Kias, Hyundais, Hondas, Toyotas. These always hold their value very well. P.U. trucks as well.

Hondas, Toyotas and PU trucks usually command a premium price. That may make economic sense if they give better service than other brands but I have a hard time paying the same for a 150,000 mile Honda as a 50,000 mile Buick.

A work colleague of mine has a 2001 Lincoln Town Car. It has nearly 200K miles on it. He loves these cars and bemoaned their passing when Ford dumped them. Anyway, given he can’t buy a new one, he was forced to replace the bushings, tie rods, shocks, wheel alignment, and get a tune up on his. He said it cost him $1,200, which I thought was pretty cheap for all that work.

At least it sounds cheap to me. Am I off on this assessment?
