Hey, I drove a duster with bald bias ply snows through an upstate NY winter. Then a gremlin. I earned my fishtail chops. My wife, well, I don't think she will be up for that.

But looks like mid December will be forking out for tires too! Ouch, with Xmas, and the DP on the new car showing up on the CC bill! Not to mention payments starting.

@abacomike - that's so amazing for your grandson. My 14 year-old is in pretty competitive baseball, though he's not at the same level as your grandson. Congrats! It should be a fun journey!

Craig....I remember being at the Ohio State Fair standing with my Father watching a “miracle carburetor” demonstration claiming that, once installed, would return 100 MPG. The deal was the oil companies and car manufacturers had consorted to keep it out of the hands of the general public.

I’ll assume moving to fuel injection was the death blow to that product!

Farmer, one day I will get there. Even better, a few months ago I got to tour Jim Taylors private collection in Gloversville. Very impressive.

Toga still might happen. I've shopped houses and can make that part work. The wife is all for it. Already has sister and brother in Amsterdam, and recently her 2nd brother bought a house in toga (part time use now, will retire from long island in a few years). Plus her 3rd brother is about to retire and is talking about moving up from the D.C. Area. Plus our son in Albany. Would just be leaving the princess off on her own in Delaware, but she will make do.

Will give me an excuse to buy a 4WD truck too!

Cleveland is an interesting topography for the Midwest. The east side rises more than you seem to notice in elevation the further east you go. So you tend to get more snow east and less in the western suburbs. Oh, and throw in Lake Erie being rather shallow for a great lake.

Aba, I think the auto stop seems to work pretty well and I'd throw in blind side monitoring with today's obstructed greenhouses. However, lane drft warning may need a little more work.

yeah, yeah, yeah @stickguy. You also had to walk 6 miles to school every day, uphill both ways, in the snow...

I’m having big problems trying to pull up this forum site or any Edmunds site. I can’t pull it up on my desk top at all. Only on my phone - but it takes forever to load. I checked my speed and both the phone and desk top are running at 70+ mbs downloads.

Anyone else having problems?

If I were you, since you have family in Amsterdam, I'd buy one of those big textile baron mansions on Guy Park Ave. from Amsterdam's glory days. You could get 5,000 sq ft. For a few hundrered thousand and live like a king amongst the struggling poor.

Past few weeks when posting it takes so long for the words to appear that spell check gets confused and makes up different words. Makes me look like more of an idiot than I really am.

Pages have loaded slowly since they changed to the new system. I always assumed it was my old IPad or cable system. Right now I'm having no problems but sometimes I have to type letters in individually very slowly.

What it was/is (I think) was an ad server problem. And it seemed to depend on what path anyone's particular location took to what servers. 7 miles away, my wife had zero issues at work (I ran her as a remote test

) yet here at home, ANY site that had ads from a certain ad seller would either grind very slowly or not open at all. Facebook wouldn't even try to load here, although it seems to be back now. But it wasn't a Comcast/ISP issue as I was just fine on any site that wasn't using those ads.

But it IS nice to know it wasn't just ME

I was having issues earlier, but just with the forums. Took forever to load, if finally did. Other sites were normal. So who knows. Seems fine now.

Crazy - I very rarely have problems with my connectivity - iPhone or Desktop. But everything was a bit screwy there for awhile. But now, all seems to have resolved itself.

I thought about it. But don't want to live there. And if I did, it would be up on the hill. Down by guy park, it gets scary! But you are right, houses go cheap. But would rather spend more for Saratoga or ballston spa.

Spoke with my grandson at length last night about his college prospects. It seems that he has applied to 10 colleges and universities thus far and has heard back from 2 so far - both accepted him and both are interested in him for baseball scholarships.

He has an extremely mature head on his shoulders. He said he does not want to think about going into the major leagues until he is finishing his junior year in college. That's when he will consider baseball as a career - but not before. He likes the idea of teaching and/or coaching - but "grandpa" made several suggestions to him - like computer science/technology, business administration, to name a few. If things were different, I would have suggested accounting, but with major changes in tax law and simplification of the tax code, that might not be the best direction to pursue. Many of his cousins are currently attorneys or are in law school, but it takes a certain type of individual to go into law and I don't think he is the type.

He still wants to visit the college in Nebraska because they have an excellent sports program in baseball. He has many months to consider his future and I suspect he will be getting many offers from colleges and universities in the form of scholarships.

We shall see.

By the way, you disbelievers out there. My BMW 740 just turned 11,000 miles and is 11 months old (new?). Every time I look at some of the cars out there, the more I know I will be staying with the 740i. I don't feel like taking the big depreciation hit like I am used to taking - and for what it's worth - there really isn't anything out there that is "better than" what I now have. It still rides like a new car and handles like a new car. It has all the creature comforts one would want in a car and its safety features are top-notch.

I'm driving up to my brother's for Thanksgiving and my BMW is a great road car. I don't think I've owned a car with 11,000+ miles on it for over 20 years. It's already had one oil and filter change and will be due for another in 6500 miles. My Michelin tires still have lots of tread on them, so tires won't be a problem for quite some time.

Yep, this one's a keeper!

I was passed by a 750 Li ? today on the way to lunch. Heavy riding wide car.
How does it compare to 740L?

When was the last time you owned a car and had two oil changes on it, not including the second change if
it was at a store when you traded it in...

@suydam has it right. If you have car you love driving, no need to look elsewhere.

I remember that! Weren't those "Pogue" carburetors or something like that? I also remember "Cow Magnets" that if duct taped to the fuel lines were claimed to boost fuel mileage by a lot. Out of curiosity, I googled Frantz Oil Filters and they are still in business! Pretty nice website and they are looking for dealers too! Anyone?

Edmunds site seems to be a bit funky....more often than not. Not sure if it's because I use a popup blocker (I do). But, it seems to freeze randomly....almost like there's a code issue.

Make sure you family vets those schools he is interested in.
One of my nephews just graduated from a well known sports academy in FL.
Yes, that one.
He signed to go to a junior college. Coach told them no more than 30 recruits, turns out they had 60 instead.
My opinion is coach got a kickback for every recruit he could keep there until the kids had paid for the first semester, then cut a bunch of them.

Actually, the only real difference is the engine. Mine is an inline 6 with dual turbo - 320 hp and 335 ft lb of torque. The 750i is a V8. Bodies are identical in length, wheelbase and width. For 2016, 2017 and 2018, they only sell the “L” (long wheelbase) in the US but dropped the “L” designation since they don’t sell the short wheelbase model. If the 750i you saw had the L designation, it was not a newer model - could have been a 2015.

I have not owned a car that had 2 oil changes for over 20 years.

The schools he applied to are all 4-year schools and all are offering 60%-80% athletic scholarships. Also, remember he gets an additional scholarship for academics from his mother’s work. So st most it will cost him room and board.

All the schools are highly rated for baseball programs.

Should he focus on college teams with a good baseball program, or strong academic college in a big sports league (SEC, Big 10, PAC 12, etc.) ??? Pro sports are competitive, injuries can happen in college sports - sounds like a smart kid too, so he needs a good Plan B as well.

Off the top of my head, Toyota Tacomas and Jeep Wrangler 4-doors have the highest residuals.

I thought most of you could relate:

A wife was curious when she found an old negative in a drawer, and had it made into a print.

She was pleasantly surprised to see that it was of her at a much younger, slimmer time.

It was taken many years ago on one of her first dates with her husband.

When she showed him the photo, his face lit up.

"Wow, look at that!", he said with appreciation,

"THAT’S MY OLD 1949 FORD 4 DOOR
and Ed’s 38 Plymouth, behind it !”

Narrow that down to car type and we can help. There are an awful lot of opinions just waiting to be expressed here.

Sports cars like Corvettes or Mazda MX 5 come to mind. As Michaell said Jeep Wrangler. Also most anything from Honda or Toyota.

Look at lease calculators as they usually have that data.

If I need to know what year something happened in....first I try to remember what car I was driving at the time!

The short quick answer is:
6 vehicles with high resale value. ...
2017 Honda Fit (subcompact) ...
2017 Subaru Legacy (midsize car) ...
2017 Jeep Wrangler (compact SUV/crossover) ...
2017 Toyota Sienna (minivan) ...
2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD (full-size pickup) ...
2017 Lexus RC (entry-level luxury car)

But, do you really want to choose a car, SUV or truck just based on that? I think unless one of these cars is a close fit, you will get tired of it quickly and trading early may cost more in the long run.

Honda CRV
Honda Civic Si
Honda Civic Type R

what are you looking to do? Buy & Hold for 5 years? Buy and sell after a year or 2? Lease?

Some cars with high residual values don't lease particularly well, while others do. Some manufacturers inflate their lease residuals as a way to subsidize the lease.
