@roadburner I say go for it. You already decided it was a worthwhile opportunity to pursue to this point so why not see it through to the very end unless there's other reasons that would hold you back.

Yeh, I get the feeling you will always be sorry if you don't give it a shot.

I used to hate losing but now I don't care. We lose from learning. The tennis player Stan Wawrinca says, as a tennis player you have to get used to losing every week (start out with 60 or a 100 players in a tournament), unless you win the tournament. But, you have to take the positive out of defeat and go back to work. Improve, to fail better.

I really don't consider not getting the appointment to be a loss- I got played. The nice thing about running is if I DO lose it's no big deal- I don't need the job to survive.

I really like the S-Class coupe, very elegant car, and kind of an 8/10ths Bentley for half the money. However now that we have the updated E coupe, it is kind of a 7/10ths S-Class coupe for around half of S-Class money, so the value argument can be made to fit the buyer. Both of them are also true hardtops, which is a cool thing. They won't be bought for practical ergonomics though, somewhat low seating and large doors will not make them easy to live with for everyone. The top of the line MB coupe is a tradition going back generations, I can't imagine it going away.

I get the claustrophobic feeling with slit-like windows too - I like visibility, but I will admit I like the BMW 6 Gran Coupe, probably more than any other BMW model right now.

It certainly doesn't have S-class type rear seat legroom.

I wonder what percentage of S cabrios will ever see rear seat passengers. 10%? Less?

I think that model is about showing off that you can afford it, buying the most expensive thing on the lot. In talking to MB salespeople, there are buyers who shop that way, especially in this market with so much (sketchy) money floating around.

What's the back story on this? How does a Saturn end up with a Honda engine? I've confirmed that GM did this for a few years but why? Would this make a better buy than a similar vintage Honda seeing that Honda had weak transmissions?

    https://sarasota.craigslist.org/cto/d/2006-saturn-vue-very-nice-v6/6377058630.html

We owned one of these. Can't remember the details, but there was an arrangement between GM and Honda for this.

I liked the power train of ours - it was the rest of the vehicle that was substandard.
V-6 Honda engine was used in the VUE 2004 to 2007 only. After that it was a rebadged Opel.
And, we traded in the '05 VUE for an '08 VUE. Much better car all the way around.

I didn't think of it as a loss either........just makes it a challenge. I just wanted to use the quote, and I like the concept of....if you think you want it....go for it.

Plus, like you say, it is nice to be in a situation where if you get it it's a bonus. I say that about life, every year over 40 is a bonus, over 60 is a double bonus....enjoy it.

How about a new 2017 Kia Soul, $11585.

    Kia Soul

    2017 Kia Soul Base
    Stock # S00143, 1.6L 4-Cylinder, Automatic, 13 mi., 25/30 MPG
    VIP Price $11,585
    $18,885 MSRP
    Savings $7,300*

    This is the part of the fine print which is really questionable though;
Price excludes dealer fee of $899, tax, tag, title, and electronic filing fee; as well as, dealer installed options which is the $1,895 Vehicle Protection Plan (includes: Lifetime Window Tint, Lifetime Car Washes, Nitrogen Filled Tires, Custom Pinstriping and Door Edge Guards)

One only at that price! Probably doesn't have A/C and is the worst possible color. If you have a trade in they will offer less than it's worth. Those add ons are expensive and of little value. nothing is ever "free"!

    But, maybe I'm wrong.....
I know the pin striping is worth $20 because that's what I paid for it on my wife's car after the shop offered it for free and I felt guilty.

Don't know much about CL but since the rape and murder of a young woman in a Boston hotel by a Craigslist customer I will never do business on CL.

Nonetheless, my CXS Lacrosse is fully loaded with hyper strut suspension,  19" wheels, 4 brand new Michelin tires and mint condition. I could consider letting it go for $25k USD.

Typing on a cellphone is a chore.

Your listing of options sounds like you have your ad all ready to go.

There have been several notable crimes related to Craigslist including murders. Was the Boston one because of a car ad? I know there have been numerous assaults of people answering CL hookup ads. Meeting a stranger for sex seems just too wierd for me.

One of the best recommendations I've heard is to do the initial meeting at the local police station. No place is really safe. Our sales people all have stories of people getting robbed or murdered on test drives.

For a car in the $25k range I wouldn't use CL. Autotrader maybe.

I once mentioned a fiction book and one guy in the book sold new cars. He always made a big deal about how he would give his customer free pinstriping to close the deal - made it sound like it was a huge bonus....and then he would go to the backroom, pull one out...the kit costs about $5, and one of the car wash kids would apply it to the car.

You probably know your way around politics better than most but the politics of personal destruction is coming into lower and lower levels. In my area we saw both a county executive and a mayor's race wherein 911 calls were leaked to smear one party with domestic abuse allegations.

Are you prepared for that level of slime?

Everything You Need to Know About the Tim Bosma Murder Trial
Bosma, a young father from Ontario, left his house to go on a test drive with two men and never returned.

Today the trial begins in one of the most disturbing murder cases in recent Canadian memory. Almost three years ago, in May 2013, Tim Bosma, a 32-year-old father of one, said goodbye to his wife and went on a test drive with two men interested in buying his pick-up truck.

He never returned. More than a week later, police said he was dead, burned beyond recognition. His wife, Sharlene Bosma, said that his remains were returned to her in a small box, no bigger than a shoe box.

This happened on Kijiji (Canada) which is exactly like CL.

I think I know my county pretty well- and likewise the county knows me pretty well. If anyone tries something like that on me the blowback on them will be much worse.
As an aside, it's remarkable to me how much the appointee is disliked among so many of the local attorneys- not to mention law enforcement. If I don't run I don't think anyone else will, and it's kind of hard to say no and let her win by default.

Last week, my father-in-law took his 2017 Subaru outback 2.5 I limited in for service. There was a recall, and the passenger side seat was not working properly. The tech took his car out for a road test & got t-boned. He didn't get hurt (it is a Subaru after all), but there is $10,000 in damage to my father-in-law's Outback. It's enough damage that it can be repaired properly (I haven't seen pictures yet), but still make an impact on the car's value. It is far from enough damage to total the car. So he's going to trade it in next week for the same car, but a 2018. Same terms. Same payment. He's resetting his payment clock, but will avoid trading a car in a few years from now that's had over $10K in damages.

That seems unfair....the innocent party loses because the car is damaged and is worth less than it would have been. I hope the Suburu dealer is giving him a great deal...like a car at cost for their part in this mess. They aren't to blame but should shoulder some responsibility.

I think I would have done the same.....in fact, once my wife did a fair amount of damage to her Saab, and though it was fixed, we didn't feel good about driving it....traded it in on a Volvo which was a real lemon - should have kept the Saab.

been consulting today with my nephew who is down for Thanksgiving. he has a 90s vintage Passat with a bazillion miles, that I can't believe is still going. Probably not close to safe at this point. But anyway, he finally realizes he needs to do something soon. Budget in theory is low teens, but hoping to not get high miles again. at least he knows enough now that accords, camrys are silly prices with high miles even.

was talking about a newer passat, but my son (his cousin) and I touted up a Jetta instead. And after looking at some options online, really pointing him towards a newer one, even if he needs to take a few year loan. Instead of dealing with other old car issues, can get something practically new, with warranty, for not much more. and make it a keeper.

found a nice one in his town (up by oldfarmer). 2017 Jetta SE, nicely loaded, CPO, 8k miles, $15,500ish. Seemed like a fine deal to me!

Tonight is our last night in our old home. Everything is boxed after the packers were here today. Movers arrive first thing in the morning.

We have only lived in this house for 3.5 years and we knew all along it wasn’t a forever home. Yet, I find myself very sentimental. It’s the house we brought Sam home to, the house where I convalesced this summer after my brush with death.  Seems weird that in a matter of 24 hours will have packed up our lives and moved it somewhere else.

I think I may be losing it.

I don't think you are losing it at all. We all become attached to things especially related to a new baby and health concerns; the things you mentioned. I still, occasionally, fondly remember things that happened in our former house and that was 25 years ago.

It won't be long before you start building memories in the new house.

I can relate 100%!  I’ve been in my home 12 years now, and couldn’t imagine moving.

Started off here as a bachelor who was literally never home (traveled for work) then my wife was here, then a dog, followed by two wonderful children and now my mother.  Wow have things have changed.   When I moved in my basement and attic were virtually empty.  Now not so much...

I remember when we sold my grandfather’s house, that one was tough too.  It was literally the only place that was consistent the entire time I had been alive.

    @bwia
I had the same generation LaCrosse as you have all loaded up.  Wife and I still talk about how we miss that car.   The only knock I had on it was poor visibility, otherwise is was a fantastic ride.  One thing for sure those “hyper struts” make a world of difference.   If you drive a 3.6 without there is significant torque steer, the upgrade suspension completely eliminates it.  303 HP through the front wheels with no TS is impressive.

Went by a local VW shop yesterday and they had a 2015 diesel for only $18,999. Imagine that a de tuned motor with worse milage than when new, what a bargain.

Trading in a 1-yr-old car for same one with same payment sounds like they are giving him a great deal.

Agree...but, only because the dealer stepped in to satisfy the customer. I mean that it is unfair that insurance companies repair your car....and, even though the accident was not your fault, you could lose $1000s when you go to trade in your car. In fact, it seems that if the dealer didn't make this deal, their insurance would have covered the cost to fix the car, but, it could be worth much less, and the owner was completely blameless.

It did not happen on Kijiji. They just found the ad that way. Same as if they found the car driving by and seeing a for sale sign. Same as if they saw the ad in a newspaper. I don't get this fascination with blaming a mode of advertising. These things happened before craigs or kijiji or even before the internet.

Kijiji or CL invites this kind of situation. You are dealing with strangers and bad people take advantage. The murderers thought they were anonymous enough they wouldn't get caught. They were caught mostly because of security cameras that people had installed for their own property. A total stranger coming to your place at night to test drive your truck....it sounds like asking for trouble.

I am in favor of new or very low mileage over high milers. I think the overall cost will be less, and you have good dependable transportation for a number of years.

thanks Q. Cheap on that left over. I did notice by me the supply seems to be gone. And he would need an automatic. He actually lives upstate, close to OldFarmer, so needs to shop there.

and we were giving him the advice that spending a few thousand more now, even if it meant a short loan, to get a car 5 years newer or more with 50K+ fewer miles (over what he was looking at) was a much smarter move. cheaper monthly (repairs, gas, etc.) and could keep it a lot longer.

I have not private sold for a few years, and probably won't do it again any time soon. But never had a scary experience. I did, however, work on gut feeling. If anything did not seem right, I didn't deal with them, or would set up to meet at a public place.

When I sold both my son's cars (both sub $1000) I had them parked in front of the house (never got a response from CL). In both cases people called, arrived by car and bought without a test drive. In one case the guy who arrived was a minister who lived down the street. Bought it for his niece who came by the next day alone to complete the deal. If anyone was in danger it would have been an unaccompanied young woman.

    Guess I looked trustworthy.

I am more than ready to sell the house and move on. I am not sentimental about stuff. It is just clutter when it has been in boxes for years and will never come out. My wife, maybe not so much.

2 years ago after my mom passed my dad decided to sell the house and move to a community. This was the place they had before I was born, so probably about 60 years. Lots of stuff stashed in that place. And of course, he listed it before we cleaned it all out, and got an immediate bidding war and sold fast, and they wanted a pretty quick close. So we had about 6 weeks to empty it out. And I lived 2 hours away. Not fun.

And semtimentality about stuff from our childhood (my sisters was up helping some days) went out the window quick into a flurry of donations, CL sales, and donations. Stuff was flying into the dumpsters (or as we referred to it, "packing in the big red box")

I think my dad mentally checked out at some point and just let us go. Probably still doesn't even know what happened to most of the stuff. Not that he needs it, or has a place for it in a little tiny 1 bedroom apartment.

There is an old adage in real estate. Never fall in love with your house. So, count your blessings and move on to your next home and enjoy!

I always parked any car I was selling at our local Credit Union and met people there and let them take the car for a drive. Never had any problems. I would never list my own address or let strangers meet me at my own home.

Regarding the move — I still feel sentimental about houses we lived in a short time but momentous events like a birth happened there. The new house hasn’t been “lived in” yet. You will soon make it your own.

Well, the Mrs. and I traveled west to the Seattle area yesterday. We went and got my sister and took her to Dick's Drive-In at the foot of Queen Anne hill near the Space Needle for a hamburger. Oh man, I think I made my sister's year by coming over to "the coast" as a lot of people in eastern Washington call the Puget Sound area.

That Dick's Drive-In downtown has a real presence of homeless people. After my wife had her hamburger she took the car keys and went out to feed the dogs. She pulled their packets of wet food out and Cotey the Pomeranian could barely wait until the food hit the paper plate and he devoured it down like not one Piranha but a small pack of Piranha's!

When we got my sister back to Bothell her husband greeted us at the door, because it's an assisted living facility that requires someone to click us in after a certain time. He told me to drive carefully and that he was worried about my sister. He loves my sister so much - I'm so glad she found him!

I saw one iA during our journey yesterday. I don't know whether it was a Scion iA or a Toyota Yaris iA because it was dark out when I saw it. The car has a small presence out on the road - it is a pretty small rig. I thought about my quest for an iA and I am slowly getting used to the idea that I need to wait until I work one more month and pass my probationary period. The 2011 Kia Soul drove like a trooper. I'd like to write down my odometer mileage the next time I get ghastly. Then write down the mileage again when I get ghastly again and figure out my ghastly mileage. My avg. ghastly mileage meter on my display is telling me I'm getting 35.4mpg on average right now, but, I notice the ghastly gauge drop sort of fast. I'm not sure I'm getting that kind of mileage, although a lot of my miles, especially over here in eastern Washington, are highway miles. So I spose I could be getting mileage that good.

In the story....two guys drove up to the house in their own truck. One guy went for the test drive, the other followed in their own truck. That is how they caught them, security cameras could catch the two trucks traveling together.

7 guys coming to look at a car would be enough to scare me. I don't like selling a car privately because I don't like the idea of strangers coming at all hours and wanting to drive the car. And, what if they do get into an accident?

But, I suppose selling on CL or Auto trader or a newspaper isn't much different. I have done it in the earlier days, I hope not to have to do it again...been there, done it, don't want to do it anymore.

Another good point, what if you sell from your home to somebody who saw the ad on CL....and the car turns out to be a real lemon? Then they know where you live and they may come by and set your house on fire or something :s
