SDA....I remember those Accords. Mostly, I remember them being in a rather hideous color of light green. Still see them on the road every now and then. One of those cars (actually most Hondas) that seem to be near indestructible.

My dealer sent me a Birthday card yesterday. He also included a seperate card for my one year (plus) anniversary of the TLX. The sales manager included a hand written note asking me the last time I owned a car more than a year. Got a chuckle out of that, but realized it’s been a few years since I’ve owned a new car that long (actually had the Mustang for over a year).

I tuned into certain shows on Fox where he was going to be appearing to get his take on what is _really_ happening and not what some other groups want it to seem to be. I didn't always agree with his take on some things, but I really liked hearing his critical thinking and explanations.

I am thoroughly amazed by how he has persevered without self pity at times. And now that a fast growing cancer is ravaging him, he has the grace to face impending death publicly through his letter to his supporters and detractors.

May God rest his soul.

The funny thing is the fact that Hagerty didn't ask for an appraisal, photos nor did they even ask me what the odometer reading was. I think they know the cars are going to be garaged and gently driven and that's all that matters. They didn't even ask for my Driver's License number!

Just heard Anthony Bourdain committed suicide. I LOVED his books and his TV shows. There was always a bit of “on tilt” in his personality. 'Twas not a good day in Beanville on Friday. Saw my oncologist for my regular visit for my prostate cancer. I was diagnosed in 3Q14 and had surgery shortly after that. Since then, I've had radiation treatments (which did not work) and hormone deprivation therapy for two years. Things were going fairly well until this year. I had lab work earlier this week, and the results were not good. My PSA (prostate-specific antigen) score had tripled since March. March's test had tripled since December. My PSA is now 13 (over 4 is bad, but after surgery, it should be zero).

So, it's obvious the cancer is back with a vengeance. I'm going to do a PET CT scan and a bone scan as soon as insurance approves them (if they approve them), and then we will go from there. It could be more hormone deprivation therapy with other drugs to suppress testosterone, or it could be chemo if the cancer has spread a lot. Right now, we wait until the scans. I'm trying to absorb all of this, and the wife is trying to keep it together. I'm going to fight this until I'm on the other side of the grass.

One thing that really makes me mad is that I've lost weight, been working out, and all of my other lab work is as good as it's ever been. I feel great, so it's hard to accept that anything is wrong with me. I guess the late, great Tom a Petty was right - the waiting really is the hardest part.

Back in those days if you wanted a new Accord, you paid around 600.00 over MSRP. You picked a color, put down a deposit and you waited six weeks. People were literally following the transport trucks to the dealers only to learn that the cars on the truck were presold. There was no price haggling or "invoice buyers". You paid the price or you bought something else. I was one of those people. The salesguy at Concord Honda was nice but he let me know what the rules were. I walked across the street and bought a new 1979 Celica Liftback that had every option except auto trans and I paid 7400.00 for it. It was the best car I ever owned up until then. I kept it for four years and 100,000 miles and sold it for 4200.00.

The people who ended up buying the Accords quickly forgot what they paid for them and they loved their cars. Also this was back in the Jimmy Carter years of 16% interest IF you had good credit!

Bean - have you also seen an urologist? Oncologists deal with radiation and chemo, but maybe surgery is the answer instead? Too much of the former can impair surgeries. Whatever your personal situation, wish you the best and hope the stuff hasn't spread.

I've heard people went nuts for the Accord 4 door upon introduction for MY 79 or 80, too. Apparently it was marketed as a small luxury car, and no doubt the quality was high - just be sure to live in a mild climate. I'd take 16% interest if I could still buy a house in Bellevue for 3x average income like you could do back then.

Keep up the fight, and think positive, it does a lot. We know you can do it.

A little more than 20 years ago, my dad had prostate cancer, it came back with a vengeance and he had to do chemo, it wasn't exactly fun, but he kept a good attitude and did all he could - he beat it. I think positive thinking has some impact on everything like this.

Guys, thanks very much to all of you for all the kind words, encouragement and good wishes and prayers. It truly means the world to me. @fintail, thanks for that story of your father. Those are the successes I like to hear about. @berri, to answer your question, I do have a urologist on my treatment team and I see him regularly. I had a prostatectomy in 2014, so he's done all he can do right now.

I don't want to forget @ab348 and @abacomike in their health challenges also. Guys, I want to send good thoughts your way. I'm glad ab posted a picture so we can put a face with his posts. I would do that, but I don't want to scare the faint hearted among you.

I'm absolutely going to beat this thing - you ain't getting rid of me.

I'll be posting wiseacre comments for a long time.

I still have the brochure to the first Accord 1976. We had just moved back to the US from France and dad had to quickly buy a car. The dealer was Bill Edwards Olds/Honda in Charlottesville, Va. I was a junior in HS and was quite taken by the Accord. Dad bought a new '76 Olds Cutlass Supreme wagon, his first new car ever! Here are some pics of the brochure. Note the pricing I wrote down.

I guess a new Accord costs 6 or 7 X what it did 40 years ago.
But, it is also a much better car and has way more equipment.

$4400 in 1976, adjusted for inflation, is almost $20k today. The list price of an Accord LX for 2018 is c. $24k—and apparently some people are getting c. $3-4k off of that. Prices for Accords have actually fallen a lot when you take into account the added power, room, equipment, technology, safety, etc., etc.

I can top that, IKEA on a Saturday afternoon! It lead to a bit of drama, but, believe it or not, logic prevailed over emotion! For a brief period of time, of course...

My wife and daughter took the Accord to Asheville, Biltmore house about 150 miles away. Even after almost 5 years I continue to be amazed by the gas mileage. The 28. is my bumper to bumper daily commute, still impressive. The 41 is her drive home from Asheville, and 38 includes some driving before she left for Asheville.

My challenges seem trivial compared to what @thebean is now dealing with. All good wishes and best thoughts to you, my friend.

It's funny looking back at everything the body puts up with. It is very resilient. I was diagnosed with coronary artery disease at 33, managed it for 20 years before finally needing bypass surgery and mitral valve replacement. Post-op complications from that almost killed me and though I survived those I never felt right after. Over the last 2 years the aortic valve went bad and that was this week's excitement.

They told me this morning I was going home, but shortly thereafter my EKG started showing lots of PVCS - problems with the electrical circuits in the heart. So I'm still in hospital. If they don't clear up tomorrow I probably get a pacemaker on Monday.

The joys of getting old. But I guess it beats the alternative.

Have you checked with actual fill up gallons vs miles to verify how accurate the computer estimates are?

Hey, bean. There is no doubt you are going to beat this. Bean counters always beat this - it’s in their nature to “squeeze it out” if you know what I mean. Getting old and coming down with all sorts of maladies is the nature of living. I’m praying for you!

Hang in there and listen to the doctors. It may not be easy but it will work out.

To others, be sure to get your PSA tests even if you are too young for the regular recommended testing age which may be 50. Ask your doctor to include it on your lab and your insurance can refuse to pay it but they will reduce the amount they would have paid to the lab, and you'll pay that reduced amount to the lab. Here, our local lab (related to Quest) has do-it-yourself labs where you pay a fee without involving doctor. You get the report directly. I believe it's only about $50 for PSA paid that way.

If you have a father or uncle (or brother) who has had prostate cancer, you're more likely at risk. I've also read mention of female relatives with certain gynecological cancers indicating a higher risk in males. Early discovery with a thorough doctor involved can lead to a much better outcome. Don't wait until 50 to start regular testing.
